Recovery to "out-of-the-box"

I need to do a recovery on my L300-EZ1502. I followed the instructions in the manual but the Recovery Wizard screen did not come up. If things don't happen like they are supposed to according to the instruction manual, I'm lost. Help!

You held down '0' (zero) while turning on the laptop and kept holding it, right?

  • Malware on New Helix (out of the box) / Need Help Accessing Recovery Partition

    Hi,
I'm working on a problem for my folks.  My dad got my mom a brand spanking new Helix (not exactly a cheap laptop).
It came with two pieces of malware:
    1.  Windows 8
    2.  AstroMenda
Since I can't do anything about #1 and #2 is a serious PITA and the machine is new out of the box (really), I thought I'd just restore the machine from the recovery partition.
However, I cannot seem to get the machine to boot to recovery mode.
Enter doesn't seem to do anything (that is the only keystroke suggested by the splash screen).
F12 gets me a boot menu but I don't see any recovery options.  Selecting the Windows Boot Manager or the Hard Drive itself results in Windows 8 booting.
F1 gets me the BIOS.  Though I imagine I might be able to set the recovery partition (which #?) to the #1 boot option, I absolutely should not have to do that.
Shift doesn't do anything (suggested elsewhere on these forums).
    F2 doesn't do anything.
    F11 doesn't do anything.
    Esc doesn't do anything.
My older lenovo T61p had the ThinkVantage.  I always thought that was pretty goofy but now I'm wishing I had a ThinkVantage.
BTW, Lenovo Support was USELESS.  They told me to return the machine and transferred me to returns but since my folks were on vacation when it arrived, we are outside the 30 day window, returns wouldn't do an exchange.  They opened a case with Customer Advocacy (never heard of that) but told me I wouldn't hear anything for 3-5 business days and there is no number, website, or email you can call to check your "Customer Advocacy" claim.  That sounds a lot like GFY.

    Hello.
Open up the Charms Bar - Settings - Click the Power Icon - Hold either Shift button down and press Restart. This will open up the Advanced Startup menu.
    Cheers!

  • Factory Recovery (Out of The Box Recovery) not working properly

I've got a Satellite L505D-G6000, 4 months out of warranty, go figure right, running windows 7 home pro.  I've had an issue that I needed to get it back to "Out of the box" condition again.  I ran the Recovery as laid out in the instructions "Press the "0" key while starting the computer" and get through the majority of the recovery, then it reboots and goes into System configuration.  Now it hangs on the configuration part and if it's interupted it disables the "Admin" login and will not recognize any USB devices OR the built in buttons on the laptop.
    Any suggestions?

    Torloc,
When you say it disabled the Admin login, you mean that the administrative account in Windows is disabled? Have you tried doing the recovery a second time? Maybe it just had a problem the time.
    doug5769 and mmack012000,
You both say you have the same problem. Can you be a little more specific? Are you using the same laptop model? Where exactly do you run into the problem when doing the recovery?
I'd just like to try to find out what exactly is happening.
If you can't solve your issue and no one in the community can help, you can try contacting support to speak with a tech support agent at (800) 457-7777.

  • How do I start over and bring my MacBook Pro to a brand new out of the box state?

I have a MacBook Pro with Retinal Display purchased in June 2012.  I have backed up once using Time Machine. How do I put it back to the brand new just purchased out of the box state? Any ideas?  I have done this with windows computers, but never a Mac.

To restore your MacBook to factory settings, you have to use Internet Recovery. Follow the steps:
    1. Press Command, Option and R keys while your Mac is starting, and open Disk Utility.
    2. Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    3. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X. This can take hours because your computer has to download OS X from the App Store.
After restoring the computer to factory settings, open App Store > Purchases to download iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand

  • IPod Touch 1st Generation doesn't work directly out of the box?

I just bought a first generation iPod touch and first things first I plug it into my PC. Nothing happens on the iPod and on iTunes I immediately get a message saying "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore it before it is usable with iTunes." So I hit OK and click yes to the message about restoring it to its factory settings, considering that's how it should be anyway since I had literally just taken it out of the box. I finally get a reaction from the iPod, and it's a solid white screen followed by the apple logo, and then for about 5 minutes iTunes says it's "prepaying the iPod for restore..." followed by the error message "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored, an unknown error occured. (1604)" Then the iPod disconnects from iTunes and proceeds to be frozen at the Apple logo screen. I have looked at all the troubleshooting walkthroughs and none of them work because I have never seen a screen on the iPod other than the Apple logo, it seems as though the only way to fix this is if I just take it back and get a replacement

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.

  • Clean Install VS Time Machine for "out of the box" performance

    Hi all ^^
Just under a year a go I made the leap of PC to Mac and have never looked back, im super happy with my Mac however I have been experiancing a decrease in performance since Ive been using it, back when I was using a PC I clean installed the OS once a year and then proceeded to add my files back, thus restoring my PC to full performance.
Ive been reading around these forums looking at Time Machine backups, hoping to see 'how much' gets restored when you perform a recovery from time machine, and from what I have read is that everything gets restored. So my question is purely for some advice and clarification
"If I want to restore my Macbook to its "out of the box" performance, Is it viable for me to use a Time Machine back up?"
    if not
"If Time Machine Back ups wont help restoring performance, Would it be possible to Clean Install and then extract purely the Files from my TM Back up?" I read another user had issues, the Mac recognised the files belonged to another mac and he couldent use them.
So I wont waffle on any furthur, but im looking for the easist way to clean install or restore performance to my Mac, a long term solution I can use each year
    Please and Thank you
    Em

    Thankyou for your answer
Im quite a clean freak when it comes to my PC, I keep my desktop bare, things I dont use remain unloaded.etc
I think as I am without a Defrag or Disk Clean up tool I feel abit helpless to maintain optimal standards. I not very experianced with the in's and out's of computers but all I really want on my Mac are my Files, Applications and the OS, nothing more.
I appreciate your time and experiance, so ild ask instead: In your experiance is it worth performing a clean install? I have hadly any junk on my Mac, and from the tone of your post you beleive a program such as MacKeeper would be sufficent?
Futhurmore a clean install once a year isnt worth it? I depend alot on what people have told me, so I may have fallen victim to a rumour :S

I have messed my MacBook Pro attempting to customize it. I am far from savvy with technology and I would like to erase and reset it to out of the box brand new and start over

    Polly,
usually there are multiple models of MacBook Pro per model number, but in the case of your model number (A1502), there’s currently only one model for that model number: 13-inch Late 2013.
To reset your MacBook Pro, you’ll need to boot into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as you start it up. When the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk (most likely the top item of the list). On the right-hand side, select the Erase tab. For the Format dropdown, select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”. For the Name input box, “Macintosh HD” has traditionally been the default name — I don’t know if that’s still the case for the Late 2013 models. After that, press the Erase… button, and erase its entire internal disk. When it’s finished with the erasure, exit Disk Utility, and select Shut Down from the Apple menu. When you start it up again, OS X Internet Recovery will redownload Mavericks from Apple’s servers and reïnstall it on your internal disk. Once it has reïnstalled, run Software Update to get it up to date, and adjust the System Preferences to your taste.

  • G580 can't backup right out of the box. Not enough space

I recently aquired a G580 with the i5 processer, 500gb hard drive and  Win8. I see the lenovo center is telling me to do a backup and since I just set it all up the way I wanted I figured it's a good idea anyway. I follow the instructions and it automatically makes a path to the D drive. I click backup and it say's there isn't enough space?
Seems my hard drive was partitioned from the factory with only a 25gb (24.9 to be exact) D drive. Now the only thing on the D drive is an applications folder with nortons and a driver folder with what looks to be backups of the OEM drivers. All this takes up 2gb of space. The backup is saying it needs 25.2 gb. So even without those files on the D drive I still wouldn't be able to make a backup.
I am reading the partitioning thread but I'm lost really. Plus I don't really want to be messing with partitions on a brand new machine out of the box. It seems I might have too though. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,
Let me suggest a few things. I guess that will clarify few of the doubts.
    1. The factory default image is saved on the OEM partition (hidden). This can be used through One Key recovery for loading factory defaults.
    2. Refer to this link on creating a back up of factory default image. This can be used to get Windows back in case of hard drive failure or replacement. Applies to Ideapads also. Link
    3. The option of creating Backup using the One Key Recovery software is for the current system image and not the factory default image. Hence the size will vary from user to user and I guess the D drive will not be sufficient for this. Anyhow, as you mentioned, creating the backup on external drive makes more sense.
Hope I was able to clarify few things.

  • Restore iMac to "out of the box"

I have replaced my iMac desktop. New one is up and running.
I would now like to restore my old one to "out of the box" condition to give to my aunt.
I tried Command R on start up and after the system was reinstalled, have found that my information is still on there.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you

    Follow these instructions:
What to do before selling or giving away your Mac
    In addition to the above:
If you enabled FileVault, disable it in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
"Deauthorize" your iTunes account. Same for Audible if you have one.
System Preferences > iCloud > de-select "Back to My Mac" and "Find my Mac".
Sign out of iCloud. Select "Delete from Mac" when it appears.
    Then:
Start your Mac with its original System Installation DVD (if your Mac shipped with one) or OS X Recovery (if it didn’t).
Remove any Open Firmware password if you created one: select Firmware Password Utility from the Utilities menu and remove it.
Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Remove any partitions you may have created.
Select the Mac's hard disk icon, then select the "Erase" tab.
Select the "Security Options" button and erase the disk.
The more "securely" you erase the disk, the longer it will take. The fastest method is sufficient since all but the most expensive techniques and equipment will be able to recover securely erased data.
When it finishes, quit Disk Utility.
Select Install Mac OS X from the Utilities menu. Do not create any user accounts.
When it finishes, shut down the computer.
If you want to install the bundled apps that were included with your Mac, restart by using your Applications DVD and install the bundled apps.
Applicable to selling outside your family or others close to you: Don't forget to include any DVDs that came with your iMac, your AppleCare certificate if you bought it, printed documentation, even the box if you still have it.
Execute a bill of sale showing the Mac's serial number.
Once no longer in your possesion, remove the Mac from your devices in My Support Profile.

  • Cisco lms - backup out of the box

when using cisco lms 4.2.5 linux version, what would be the best way to backup the config files out of the box?
what i'm lookin for is a way to take the shadow folder to another box for disaster recovery.

Hi, i found this solution to work very well for exporting files out of the box:
    As user root:
    1) on cisco-lms install sshfs, which lets you mount a folder on a remote box through sftp:
    install in the following order:
    rpm -ivh fuse-libs-2.7.4-8.el5.x86_64.rpm
    rpm -ivh fuse-2.7.4-8.el5.x86_64.rpm
    rpm -ivh fuse-sshfs-2.5-1.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm
    2) mount
    mkdir /mnt/backup
    sshfs root@<remote-linux-box-ip>:<remote-folder> /mnt/backup -o allow_other
    3) rsync with cron
    00 1 * * * rsync -r -v /var/adm/CSCOpx/files/rme/dcma/shadow/* /mnt/backup/ >> /root/rsync.log 2>&1

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This will install the version of OS X that originally came with your model if you have a model that supports Internet Recovery - 2010 models and later: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery.

Open current iTunes on your computer. Connect iPhone to the computer with the Lightning USB Cable. Hold both the Home and Power buttons for about 20 seconds until iTunes recognizes the iPhone in Recovery Mode. Click the Restore button of iTunes. If still problem, make Genius reservation or set up Sevice and take or send to Apple for resolution under Warranty.

  • S430 - touchpad not working at all out of the box

    Hi all
I know there's a few people who have problems with the touchpad on their thinkpads, I've got another, different problem!
I got mine out of the box yesterday and neither the touchpad nor the red joystick controller in the keyboard work.  The buttons on the touchpad also don't work.
Luckily I had a USB mouse at home and I've been able to the laptop up and running, but no luck trying to get the touchpad working.  I've gone through the user guide, the help guide, the lenovo website etc, but not finding anything.
When I go into the "control panel", then "hardware and sound" and select "device manager",  the only "mice and other pointing devices" that I have is my HID-compliant mouse which seems to be the USB mouse.  The touchpad doesn't feature at all.
If I go into "control panel" and select "mouse"  I don't actually have a tab for "UltraNav".  Since all the help out there tells me to go to that tab, I don't really know what to do!
If I go through the Lenovo Solution Center, it tells me that the "ThinkPad UltraNav Pointing Device" is disabled and to fix it I need to go to the Device Manager.
But, as already said, in the device manager there's nothing I can do!
Any help would be much appreciated.
    cheers
    Harry

    Hi
This notebook seems to belong to the PSAF5E series.
I wonder where you have found the drivers for this series ?:|
However, I have checked the Toshiba European page and didnt find the Vista touchpad driver especially for this series.
BUT the page provides some touchpad drivers (two drivers) for the Equium A200 PSAEE.
I would recommend installing the Alps Electric Touch Pad driver v7.0.301.4 and the Synaptics Touch Pad driver v. 9.1.14.0.
By the way; its always recommended to reinstall the OS with the Toshiba recovery CD. If you dont have such CD you could order it from the ASP which is responsible for you country.

  • Is the latest update to the 6th gen nano a software download or does it come with the new watch faces and larger icons out of the box

Apple shows the new 6th gen nano with the new selection of watch faces and lager icons etc as per new update, but stores still have the 6th gen nano with just 3 watch faces and smaller icons etc. Is the newer spec just a software update that i do after purchase or does it come updated out of the box?
    Thx

It should come out of the box with the new 1.2 update, but if it doesn't you can simply connect it to iTunes, download, and install the update from there.
