Recreate a User Account
I have a user account which I believe is corrupt. Is there a way of recreating this account so I do not lose any existing mail? The mail is served from an XServe and is IMAPed.

Can you describe what you mean when you say the account is corrupt? What are the issues, what other services does the server provide, what services does the user use, and what have you tried?

How to recreate the com.apple.calendarserver user account?
Hi everybody!
I migrated my Snow Leopard server to Lion and discovered (to my annoyance) that it doesn't run an Open Directory server by default. This is bad since we have several Macs that rely on this feature. As you all know, Apple ***** badly as far as the documentation or support for Mac OS Server is concerned.
Anyway, with a lot of research I got my OD up and running again, including all the user accounts. There is just one victim: the com.apple.calendarserver user account. It is not in OD anymore, and it is not in the local user database. Consequently, email invitations in iCal don't work, which again ***** badly.
Can any of you guys tell me a way to recreate this user account without blowing the rest of the server out of the water?

I finally hit the right spot, I think. Having a look at the server settings via
# sudo serveradmin settings calendar::Scheduling
revealed that they were all wrong. I looked up my System key chain and voila, there is an entry for icalserver.invitations. I retrieved the password and checked if it worked by entering
# sudo doveadm auth com.apple.calendarserver <password from key chain>
It worked! So I fixed the server settings via
# sudo serveradmin stop calendar
# sudo serveradmin settings calendar::Scheduling:iMIP:Sending:Password="<password from key chain>"
# sudo serveradmin settings calendar::Scheduling:iMIP:Receiving:Password="<password from key chain"
# sudo serveradmin start calendar
Everthing seems to be running happy dandy right now, I'll test some more and report back to you guys if I run into more glitches.

User Account Setup & Config Tips for Two Macs
Greetings,
Can someone please explain the importance of lowercase vs. uppercase letters and the use of spaces in the Mac OS when setting up user accounts? I'm sure there must be some UNIX, LDAP, or X.500 directory explanation out there given OS X's UNIX underpinnings.
The reason I ask, is that I have recently switched to the Mac OS from Windows, and there seems to be an emphasis on using lowercase letters and spaces in the Full Name, Account Name, and Home Directory Name when setting up your OS X user account. I have tried Googling this and I can find all kinds of articles on how to change these settings post OS install and the importance of keeping your account name and home directory name the same but nothing that explains why you should only use lowercase letters.
For example, in real life, I go by my middle name. So in the "Full Name" field in System Preferences -> Accounts I have entered my Middle and Last name with a single capital letter for each name a space in between the two.
Full Name looks like this: "Middle Last"
For the "Account Name", I have entered a nickname I have had for years that does not match or have anything to do with my legal name that I entered for the "Full Name". While the Mac OS prohibits you from entering spaces in this field, it does allow you to enter uppercase letters. The name I entered here is a two part name, and I have capitalized the first and second parts for easier reading.
Account Name looks like this: "NickName"
My Home Directory matches my Account Name above and looks like this in the Finder: "NickName"
I've also linked my MobileMe user name to this account and it looks like: "middle.last"
Question: Should I recreate my user account and get rid of the uppercase letters in the full name, account name, and home directory name?
Another question I have, would it be advisable to set up identical user accounts given that I have a iMac i7 in my office and a Mac Mini in my living room? I would be the only user for both machines.
I would like to set up my Mac Mini to be a central repository for all my music, iPhoto projects, and iMovie projects. I would like to share my iTunes music on the Mac Mini using the Home Sharing feature of iTunes. Eventually I want to set up MythTV on the MacMini and use it as a DVR.
I want my iMac i7 to store all my documents and pictures. I want to create and edit iPhoto & iMovie projects on my iMac, but store what I create on the Mac Mini. That way when people come over to visit, we can sit on the couch rather than gather around my desk in my 2nd bedroom.
Eventually I want to set up an external hard drive on the Mac Mini and use Time Machine on both computers to backup to the Mac Mini's external hard drive since I will leave the Mac Mini on 24x7.

DerrickSimply put there is nothing wrong with your name or account configuration. Although it is customary in Unix systems to use all lowercase for an account name, what you have setup is certainly acceptable. Passwords also can be a mix of lower and uppercase but should be limited to alphanumerics only.
As for the two machines you will find it much more convenient to have everything configured identically on both machines to avoid issues with file permissions. -
Sorry - but still cannot see my primary user account

I have tried everything in this post, some of them more than once.
There are three user accounts on my shiny new iMac, and all are Admin users. After the Upgrade, the computer rebooted into my main user account. However, when I tried to install the update, the system would not accept my password.
No problem, just use the Leopard install disk to change the password. Restarted under the install disk, opened the change password utility, re-typed the passwords to the two user accounts, and rebooted.
So now I see only one of the user accounts (not the primary one). And so the journey begins.
I have reinstalled 10.5, using 'Archive and Install'. No luck. I have logged in as root (that worked at least) and did manage to copy the primary user folder to another disk. But when I tried to recreate the user account, using the same name and short name, the system told me I couldn't use the names because they were already being used.
So everything is still there, but it's not getting into the Accounts setup pane. Which is a pain. (bad pun -- sorry!)
I have installed 10.5.1, and still no luck.
Even logged in as a single user, and got the 'Socket is not connected' message.
Any more ideas?I'm in the same boat. The fixes detailed have not solved my problem. The account is visible when booting from the install DVD and I can change the password, but when rebooting from the HD the account does not show up on the list. If I change the mode so that I enter the account name and password they do not work. If I go in using single-user mode and try changing the password I get the error message that the account is disabled. If I go in as root I can get to everything, so it is all still there, but it is locked up otherwise.
I don't want to gork my wife's info or settings. Help will be muchly appreciated thank you most intensively in advance. -
User Account deleted, but Home folder still visible
Deleted a user account within the System Preferences > Accounts and restarted the computer, but the "deleted" account is still visible under Finder > Users.
It failed to delete the account when I tried to 1st option of saving to .DMG - so I chose the 3rd option i.e.: to remove the Home folder. this seemed to work OK as the User Account is no longer presented as available to Login.

ThanksApple offers the option saving the user file as a disk image or delete the account, but keep the files in the account, or get rid of it entirely. The first two options make it possible to recreate the user account. You must move the file out of the User directory to rename (remove (deleted)) from the name. Place the folder back into the User directory and create another login using the same name as the file and the system will ask you if you want to use the above mentioned folder as the home folder. Click yes and the user is back as if it never left.
Why would I want to bother? You might find that there was something left in the user folder that you want to retrieve. Another reason, I consider even more significant is if I am having problems with a user account and it is isolated to that account, I will use this method to hopefully clear up any corruption within the account. -
How to recreate a deleted user account w/ same email address
Hi,
I have a MacMini running Maverics 10.9.1 and Server 3.0.1. In the server, I also have the Open Directory running, but there are no Local Network Users configured at the moment.
I deleted one of my Local Users from the server and would now like to recreate the account with the same email address as the old one had.
When I try to do this, I get an error message from the Server>Users>New User scree saying "The email address [email protected] is already in use".
Apparently the user deletion from the Server>Users screen did not compeltely delete the Local User from the server. How can I get the user including the old mailbox completely deleted?

After the Local User account deletion now, apparently the [email protected] still works but all mail is piped to [email protected]
So, how do I disable/fix this [email protected]>[email protected] pipe and then how do I remove the old [email protected] mail box out of the server completely?

Recreate user account in Workgroup Manager, empty mailbox
We have OS X 10.3.8 Server version. Postfix mail server.
We have a user/account with email problems and a huge mailbox. He (user: gordon) had over 16000 emails in his mailbox (/var/spool/imap/user/gordon). All other mail users on this server work fine, including newly created user accounts.
Our solutions was to try and delete all mail from his mailbox via Terminal. This did not seem to decrease the size of his mailbox. Our next idea was to delete this user in Workgroup Manager and then re-created this user. Hoping to created an new mail setup and empty mailbox. This idea failed aswell.
How does one basically purge an old account/user in Workgroup Manager, and then, recreate that same user name and effectively recreate the user with a new account, including a new/empty mailbox?

Having said that, your issue can be resolved differently. You deleted all mail manually in the file system (not a good idea, but what is done is done). So the mail is actually gone. What you are seing is Cyrus' index. Since you deleted manually the index didn't get updated. To get rid of the problem either reconstruct that users mailbox throgh Server Admin - > Mail or alternatively run:
sudo -u cyrus reconstruct -r user/gordon (assuming that's the user's name)

Recreate iTunes in new user account
Can anyone point me to directions for moving my iTunes playlists, etc. to a new user account? When I search, everything is about moving to a new computer, which is not really working. I think I may be missing a key step in the process.
Is it an authorization error or a permissions error?
A computer is authorized for an iTunes account and all accounts on that computer are authorized. You do not need to do them separately.
Make sure the user account you moved it to has full Read/Write permissions for the iTunes folder.
In the Finder, *Get Info* on the iTunes folder.
Make sure you have Read/Write permissions and click the gear and select *Apply to enclosed items*. -
Slow going from Login to full loading of desktop in main user account
Lately my beloved Macbook Pro has developed a problem in the main user account. It is taking too long to load the desktop & menu bar after Login. If the alternate user account isn't an admin account, create a new admin account. While logged into the appropriate admin account, backup the main account's folder, delete the main account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the main account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated main account. If it boots normally, then the problem's solved, open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving conflicts or identifying corrupt plist files is a laborious process. Good luck.

Redwood User Account error on Job
Hi All,
We currently had all our BWP jobs fail with the following error:
JCS-00503: OS account SYSJCS does not exist or is disabled on BRSAPPRDBWPV2
JCS-00315: job must run under OS equivalent of Oracle account SYSJCS
We run our oracle database on a Windows 2003 environment and also our Redwood/SAP servers are on a Windows 2003 server.
The job itself users "USER" account.
The only way we could get the jobs to start was by restarting the BWP Redwood services, and this worked fine.
Also want to state the we had the following issue at the sametime which was flagged up to us in "messages":
resubmit.update_job:
ORA-04061: existing state of package body "SYSJCS.CHAIN" has been invalidated
ORA-04065: not executed, altered or dropped package body "SYSJCS.CHAIN"
ORA-06508: PL/SQL: could not find program unit being called: "SYSJCS.CHAIN"
All our BWP process chains are executed via the RUN BW CHAIN script, which is copied and renamed for the process chain.
We have tried to replicate the error in our dev environment but it worked fine. RFC points nothing at all.. Any help would be much appreciated. OSS note has been raised...

The SYSJCS.CHAIN package is not used for BI Process Chains, only for CPS Chains. So the invalidation must have come from another source.
When this error occurs, as long as there are sessions started before the package has been re-validated (state reinitialized), you can continue to run into this error until all sessions have been restarted. The extend of the error depends on the package being reinitialized (how often it is used and the dependencies it has) and the session that needs to call it.
I think the error may already have been there before you did the chain import and just happened to surface shortly after the import.
Regarding your other questions:
1. RSI_IMPORT_BW_CHAINS or RSI_IMPORT_BW_CHAIN_DEFINITIONS:
the second one is only needed if you want to display the process chain definitions in the web interface before the chain is even running in CPS (in the job monitor you only see the processes that have started); if you do not use that, RSI_IMPORT_BW_CHAINS is enough
2. How would you go about maintaining BW process chains in Redwood (CPS)?
This is a question that every customer runs into at some point. First, you currently can not change a process chain definition in the BI system from CPS. Then there are cases where you probably want to leave the process chain structure intact (typically on the deepest level: drop index, do some work, recreate indexes). And there are other cases where it can be useful to bring some logic to CPS (typically on all levels where you have process chain within process chain in BI, ie. on all but the deepest levels).
For this last case, which is of course the most interesting for CPS, it can be very valuable to recreate the BI "meta-chain" structure in a CPS job chain.
So here you replace the BI "meta-chain" calling several BI process chains by a Cronacle job chain still calling some of the BI process chains (the ones on the deepest levels).
Now you can add all the CPS extras for error handling, retries, cross system dependencies, (external) events, alerting, etc. etc. on each and every point in the CPS job chain, so you get a lot more information, intervention and recovery points on your BI process than you would when running the entire thing in one big BI Process Chain (triggered from CPS or not does not matter).
Typically the customer's decision here mainly depends on the advantages that can be achieved, especially if there are service levels to be met on the reports that need to be delivered from BI and these deadlines tend to get tighter by the month.
By reducing the total runtime of the process or reducing the number of errors that occur or if they occur, the amount of work to fix it, you can save a lot of time, and thus money.

Problem with second user account sharing one iTunes library
I have an iTunes library that is outside my Home folder that I am sharing between two users. One account functions flawlessly. All the songs are there. Everything is organized into folders by iTunes. iTunes Match is working as it should and all files have been downloaded from the cloud.
I have tried everything to get the second account to work as the other. I have used Apple's instructions to reimport the xml file. I have even recreated that users iTunes account from scratch. But when I go to preferences and point that account to the shared iTunes library the new account wants to copy the files or re-download the music and in both cases making duplicates in the library.
Looking for help.
Message was edited by: bitmanSo I have both accounts now working... sort of. The problem is that the common iTunes Media folder they share does not contain the iTunes Library files (.itl and .xml). Those files are still in each account's Home folder iTunes Media folder. I can see this will be a problem keeping the shared iTunes Media folder happy.
I'm not sure how I got things to this point but I do want to correct it.
Can can I copy one of the account's iTunes Library files to the shared iTunes Media folder? -
How do i move my user account to a new account
I have had so many problems with main main account on my G5. I want to create a new admin account and migrate my key chains and network settings and so forth, but without using the archive install. I do have a paid .mac account and do sync my key chains and such to it. Unfortunately, i have a lot of music files and such too.
what is the procedure to move these items without causing permission issues. any ideas?If you want to retain the same username/password combo, then, after creating and logging into the new admin user account, delete the original, saving its data (placed into /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image. Recreate the original, log into it, mount the saved data disk image, and transfer the stuff to the recreated account. Do note that if there were conflicts in the original, you just might be duplicating the problem.

On one user account: finder blinks and icons missing
I have 2 user accounts on our iMac G5. One account works fine and the other is messed up (Finder blinks repeatedly at startup, and many icons are missing)... Disk Utility found a couple things to repair, but no improvement.
Aside from deleting and recreating the account, any other steps? What else should I look for or be aware of?Just make sure that whatever you put on the account is not corrupted, check to make sure it works on your main account before transferring.

Multiple websites on multiple user accounts. Want all websites in one user
I have multiple websites in multiple user accounts. At the time I started this way iWeb 08' didn't allow more then one website per user.
I now have three limited user accounts with three iweb sites. One in each account. I'd like to move two of them to the main user account and have all three available to me in the user account I call mine. Is this possible with iWeb 09'? i can, by hand, recreate them in the main account, but I'd like an easier solution.
I am hoping it is possible to combine the files from each "Domain.sites" and make one magical come together with each site in place.
Thanks EveryoneMove all of the Domain.sites2 files to one user account and rename them to represent the site inside, i.e. Myfirstsite.sites2, Mysecondsite.sites2, etc. Put them all in your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.
Using the application suggested by Wyodor merge the sites into a new domain file. You can only merge 2 sites at a time so you'll have to do 2, then select that new one and merge with a 3rd file, etc.

New domain files are created by the merge process so your original domain files will be untouched.
OR, you can leave the domain files as they are, named individually, and use iWebSites to choose and open the site you want to work on and publish. I manage multiple sites with iWebSites:
This way the domain files loads more quickly and if there's a problem only one site is affected.

Make sure you are signed into iMessage and FaceTime with your current ID. If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID. Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change. (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.) Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iDevice and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID). Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll (unless using iCloud Photo Library). When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out (or Delete Account if you are not running iOS 8) and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was. Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign back in with your current iCloud ID and password (your data will download back to your device).
