Recreate iTunes Library Database

Here's my situation (any thoughts would be greatly appreciated):
I recently moved my library to a new internal drive to save some space on my boot drive. First I changed my iTunes media folder location to my new internal then I consolidated my media to the new drive. Like a fool, I then deleted everything in my iTunes folder from my boot drive thinking that I had all that stuff copied to my new internal. Of course when I opened iTunes it was empty. So now I'm sitting here with a nicely organized iTunes media folder with tons of music, etc. in it on my new drive but no library database to tell iTunes where all that music is.
I realize all my album artwork, playlists, genius mixes, etc. are probably lost for good. But is there any way to get iTunes to recreate the library database without having to do something funky like drag my newly moved media folder back into iTunes?
Thoughts?

I think that either you click and drag to wait for it to build... Or you can use the file and import options to recreate it.
DO NOTE: that it may create a folder with small files in it (which are pointers to the music on your alternate drive).
Just make sure that you don't delete that folder agian.
Sorry to hear, and don't those stupid tricks you do just irritate you after you realized it.

  • Can i search and replace in the itunes library database file?

    Hi --
I need to update the file location in the itunes database for a few thousand songs. These songs are just part of my full collection. A few hundred of these songs are referenced in playlists. Rebuilding the libarary, consolidating the library, adding the new folder to library -- none of these suggested solutions to similar problems will work for me. (My collection is too large for one drive and is spread over several drives, and I have many playlists with hundreds of songs, and the playlists would be ruined with any of these approaches.)
I thought I had an easy solution by doing a search and replace in "itunes library.xml," replacing the old file path with the new one. But then I learned (as you probably already know) that the real information is stored in "itunes library," and the xml file is just a downstream copy of that information. All my edits were overwritten as soon as I opened itunes.
The solution to my problem is completely straight-forward if I can just do a search and replace in "itunes libray." Is it possible to edit that file directly? The only database program I have is MS Access, on windows, and it couldn't open the file.
    Thanks very much

  • Best approach to recreating iTunes library

    Hello all,
I'm looking for some feedback on needing to recreate my iTunes library.
I had a crash a couple of weeks ago, and was able to use the Recovery Disk function to get my laptop up and running, but since then there have been some oddities that refuse to go away despite repeated Disk Utility runs. One of the symptoms is iTunes losing track of deleted items. I delete something, select "Move to Trash" from the dialog, and the track listing (music, book, movie, etc) is gone. BUT I check the actual location on disk and it remains.
I've resolved myself to needing to reinstall the system and I believe it would be a good time to get the library cleaned up in the process.
The core of my question is: I've got imported CDs, movies, iTunes purchases, Amazon purchases.... I've added artwork as well as lyrics to many files. If I backup the whole iTunes library and do the reinstall and IMPORT everything fresh will I lose my lyrics, edited start times, and artwork and such? I don't mind (much) losing the playcounts and other play data, but I don't want to have to redo all the track stuff.
Can anyone suggest a reasonable way to approach this? I've looked, and the only real links that seem to partially apply are http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451 and https://discussions.apple.com/message/1499771#1499771
    Thanks,
    Markie

    Chris,
I did the reinstall via Recovery, and have to admit it was pretty sweet that everything just came back.
Unfortunately, there have been intermittent probs.
I believe you may be suggesting a reinstall from scratch though, which is my intent at this point. Haven't done it yet. I do maintain a backup, yes.
I thought simply re-copying the iTunes folder might bring any crud along with it, but I don't suppose it would hurt to try. Then I can avoid the stuff I'm hoping to.
    Thanks,
    Markie

  • ITunes Library Databases

I moved iTunes files and folders off my C drive to an external drive. And, I changed the "iTunes folder location" to my external drive. But first question is how long do I make the path, i.e., which folder or file do I end the location with? ("My Music?" "iTunes?" "iTunes Music?"-but then what about podcasts folder? ) Second question, My iTunes library shows all the song titles, podcasts, etc., but there is an exclamation mark beside most of the songs/podcasts and it can't find the files when I try to play them or try to transfer them to playlists. I do not know what specifically to search for--a general folder or a file name. I have iTunes library.xml and iTunes Library.itl. Also, my new library doesn't have all of my old songs, so does that mean I look in a previous iTunes library? If so, inside that folder, there are various icons and folders to click on, and I don't know which one to click on and what to do with it. Please help.

Moving the database file will not help.
If you want to make another drive (direct or portable) on your PC the main music location for iTunes, move all song files there, as well as any future imported music from CDs, here is one method (see the links below):
You will maintain your playlists, ratings, comments, etc. This will
    i only
    move your music folders location,
    i NOT
your iTunes program files. It is my opinion that programs (i.e. – iTunes) work better when installed on your main hard drive. At the very least, it makes it easier to manage all your programs if they are centrally located on one hard drive (the Windows default standard).
See these links for step-by-step info:

MacMuse, "iTfW: Move iTunes music/Library to new drive", 11:34am Oct 12, 2004 CDT

If you are moving the music to an external hard drive, after the transfer and to work correctly, the ExHD must be running prior to your opening iTunes. If not, iTunes may reset the location of your music to the default.

  • Recovering iTunes library database .itl via time machine

In short, when I go back beyond a week in time machine I cannot find any .itl or even any of the .itdb or .xml files on my mac that I can restore with time machine.  The only version that is there is for the current library which is missing 99.9% of the content.
    The context:
    1. I had itunes folder on my hard drive and an external with all of the content. Over the years the external must have been disconnected or what not as a sizeable media folder had also developed on the hard drive.
    2. In order to free up space on the hard drive I consolidated the media and moved the library to a second external that had much more free space.
    3. I ended up deleting the iTunes library on the hard disc on or around 6 april 2015. I believe I deleted the whole folder.
no dramas - everything worked for weeks
    4. Today I noticed that the iTunes library was pretty much empty but for purchased music. All the podcasts, playlists and basically anything not purchased was gone.
    5. I look into the iTunes folder on the hard disc and I noticed that there is a music folder with two songs that my kid likes to play. It leo has all of the usual library xml files and the .itdb / .itl files (which to be honest I have never noticed before, I had only remembered ever seeing the .XML files).
    6. The "new" .itl file was created on Sunday 26 april at 5.30 pm.  The whole iTunes folder it sat in on my hard drive also did not exist before this time.
    7. If I use time machine and scroll back further in time than sunday there is no iTunes folder on my hard drive.
    8. I thought I would just need to find the .itl file that predated this new library that was created on Sunday. Trouble is I can't find one. On any disc, hard disc, the first external or the second external.  The only iTunes folder I can find with any of the database files needed is the one created on Sunday that is empty.
    9. I have all of the media organised on the second hard disc however I don't want to reimport and lose all the metadata that I have built up since 2001 at least.
    THE QUESTIONS
A - where should I be looking for the old iTunes database files using time machine if I used the advanced features of iTunes to move the database to the new disc
B - Can I perform some sort of system wide restore that would take me back in time to a point before last Sunday to get my old iTunes database back?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance
    Len

    Eeeek!
    Thank you for your reply.
I did a bit more digging back through time machine and I found an iTunes library with the required files from as far back as 10 April.
If I did delete the iTunes folder on 10 April - I really wonder how it continued to work for 16 days straight without a hitch (whilst I was rebooting throughout). Very odd.
OK so if I have to use the old one from 10 April the only problem I can think of is that the database will probably be looking for the media on the old location (mainly external no 1 and a bit on the internal hard disc) as opposed to external no 2 where they all sit consolidated.
That might not be a huge problem as the media still sits on external no 1 (too scared to delete it!).
    Couple of questions:
    1. If I restore the 10 April library  and the database was pointing to the old location on External no 1 plus a few pointers to now-non existant files on the hard drive - is there a way of redirecting the library to External no 2 where ALL the files would currently be?
    2. If I trashed the iTunes folder on 10 April - might it still be somewhere in the backup?
    Cheers
    Len

  • Recreating itunes library from your ipod

recently my hard drive died, i did not have a backup of my itunes library.....got a new computer was wondering if i can recreate my itunes library on my new computer from the music on my ipod
    hp   Other OS

Connect your iPod and if you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    TuneJack Windows Only
    CopyPod Windows Only
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Moving the iTunes Library database

I hae the iTunes media file on an external hard disk.
I  need to move to a new windows 7 laptop and want to leave my media file on the external harddisk.
I plan to install a new iTunes on the new laptop. Can I copy the iTunes library data base from the old laptop to the new one, hook up the external hard drive to  the new laptop and iTunes working.
Thanks for your thoughts and ideas.

Provided the external drive has the same drive letter on the new system then yes, that should work.

  • How to recreate itunes library?

Long story short: All my songs got deleted on my iPod and on my computer. I had 1,200 songs which will probably impossible to get all those back unless I knew the name of all the songs. Is it possible to get the list of all the songs I had on my iPod? All I need is the list of songs! I tried to go on iTunes and load the ituneslibrary.itl  but it only loads like 4 songs out of the 1000...I always connected my iPod to iTunes regularly, surely there must be a file that has the list of songs.
    Any help will be appreciated!

  • Recreating itunes library when itunes 10 won't open?

So when clicking the iTunes 10 icon in the dock the icon bounces once then quits before the application will open. I've re-downloaded itunes 10, reinstalled OSX (I'm having an iPhoto problem too which seemed to justify this), removed a 3rd party visualizer and the "volume-logic" equalizer and trashed them along with the prefs and finally followed the Apple support article on re-creating the library in hopes of getting my iTunes back. This pIugin is installed with the Flip4Mac Windows Media Components. I solved the problem by uninstalling the WM Components via the uninstaller at /Applications/Flip4Mac/Flip4Mac WMV Uninstaller.pkg, after which iTunes opens successfully.

  • Managing sole iTunes library with multiple machines on-the-go with database&media on external drive?

Hi fellows. Trying to organize & revamp my iTunes library & wish to achieve a configuration but lack the expertise to achieve it. My objectives are:
    Objectives
+1. for my multimedia content to be stored/accessed from an external hard disk+
+2. to keep the entire iTunes multimedia & all necessary operating files as self-contained as possible,+
+3. Allow multiple machines to manage import of new content into library, i.e. download new episodes of podcasts, rip new music & movies into the library, sync-ing of iPod even when said machine is nowhere near my external hard disk (this is the tricky one)+
    _Justification for my objectives_
For objective #3, it's not that I'm trying to be funny. My use case is I've 1 laptop (main machine & always at home) & 1 netbook (brought to school daily). Most of my iTunes usage will be via the stay-at-home laptop; but I may wish to add/manage new content onto my iTunes library/iPod while I'm outside (hence, decoupled from my external hard disk at home).
I'm not trying to be funny for objective #1 either. I wish to have a streamlined process of retaining & re-instating my iTunes library meta-data across system re-format, i.e. where the iTunes library db files' location may be changed (most obvious being the new "My Music" folder path in Win7 from WinXP)
    _What I'm well aware of_
I understand that storing/re-locating multimedia on external hard disk is no-kick to iTunes veteran. I also understand that after a new installation of iTunes, I can move the fresh copy of "iTunes_library.itl" & "iTunes_library.xml" files to my external volume & point iTunes to their new address from the 2nd launch onwards. I also understand any new machines I introduce into my environment can be directed to that exact copy of iTunes library database files when I install iTunes & pressing "Shift" key upon their launch. Lastly, I also understand that I will have no access to my multimedia files (for playback) while I'm outside, but I can still add new content, & download new podcasts & remove old content from my library/iPod
    _The question_
However, what I have difficulty achieving, is launching iTunes on my on-the-go machine(s), without a local copy of the iTunes library database files. I doubt iTunes will be able to launch at all, & if I create a new library (just to launch iTunes), it will not possess content from my main media collection & likely to wipe out my iPod.
_My novice attempt & its inadequacies_
My 1st instinct, is to have the iTunes library database files stored in the cloud. More specifically, I can store them files in my DropBox folder/account, & have every machine update to a single latest version of iTunes library database files upon Internet connection. However, this method depends on:
+* the DropBox application to exist forever,+
+* assumed the installation path of DropBox (or any applications for that matter) to persist/remain unchanged across future versions of operating systems,+
+* Will corrupt any un-sync-ed version of my iTunes library database files when I launched iTunes without 1st updating the local cached copy of them database files (suppose I manage my iPod playlists via iTunes on a plane)+
    _Open for recommendations_
So here I'm, all ears to any fine recommendations you iTunes veterans have to offer. Thanx in advance.

In case anyone is interested in these sorta thing:
UPDATE #4: Unfortunately, if you discover you tagged something wrong after importing the songs, even when you correct the tags, iTunes will not re-organize the folder hierarchy, as long as “Keep iTunes Music folder organized“ is UNchecked, even if the songs were imported via the “Automatically add to iTunes folder” channel.
Example: I imported a folder of Andy Lau songs into my library, unbeknownst to me, some of the songs had their “Artist” tagged as “Andy Lau“, while some had theirs tagged as “Liu De Hua“. Naturally, the 1st time round I imported them, 2 separate folders were instantiated as to iTunes, those were names of 2 distinct artists (this is expected, & acceptable behaviour). The downside is, even if I re-tagged all those songs with “Andy Lau” as the artist, iTunes will no longer re-organize & consolidate all them songs into a single “Andy Lau” artist folder (because I’d “Keep iTunes Music folder organized” UNchecked remember?)
Well, you may suggest that I check that option when managing my future library & uncheck it right before launching/using my main, current library. The thing is, iTunes preferences persist across libraries, & one day I will forget to uncheck that option, launch my main library & lose all my current music folder structure to iTunes’ re-organization (which I don;t want, as of yet). Which brings me to another update:
UPDATE #5: My future iTunes library has “I:/iTunes_Media” as iTunes’s “Home” folder. This setting persists even when I switch back to my main, current library. Which means, if I’d my external volume connected while launching/using my main, current library, all new content will end up in that folder on the external volume! Which messes up the whole scheme of things! Arghz!
UPDATE #6: Here’re some updates with regards to ID3 tags:
    * the “Album Artist” in Windows (7) Explorer = the “Album Artist” field in iTunes 9
    * Modifying a ID3 tag field using Windows (7) Explorer will update BOTH the v1 & v2.3 version of the ID3 tags on the song (if the song has both versions of tags embedded & if the field exists in both tag versions). If you update the tags via iTunes, only the v2.3 tags get updated. This is surprising.
    * the “Contributing Artist” field in Windows (7) Explorer = the “Artist” field in iTunes 9 & the “Artist” field in ID3v1 tags (changes in tany of the 3 fields will affect the other 2 respectively)
o However, iTunes Media folder organization will only adhere to the value saved in the “Album Artist” field [if you change the value of "Contributing Artist" in Windows (7) Explorer, the "Artist" field in iTunes or the "Artist" field in a song's ID3v1 tags, no folder re-organization will occur]
UPDATE #7: Some updates with regards to workflow:
Decided to retain all non-music content within a sub-folder named “non-music” beneath the main album folder (& take strict precautions to import songs only). The exception is “m3u” playlist files. Have read elsewhere if you import a folder of songs & there’s an “m3u” playlist inside, your library may have duplicates and/or the tags of those songs you just imported could be screwed, etc.

  • Help storing itunes library on an external hard drive

    Hi,
I have put all my music on an external hard drive (Lacie) and deleted it from my Mac Book Pro. I have gone into preferences - Advanced in the itunes menu and changed the location of my itunes music folder to my external hard drive. Then when I go to click on a song in itunes it comes up with a message saying "the song ... Could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?".
The file is definitely on my eternal drive because I have checked many times, and its in the folder that I have specified when I go into the itunes - preferences - advanced pane.
Do you know why this would be happening? I have deleted all the music from my computer and it is only on my hard drive now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have spent hours trying to figure this out!

Well that will certainly teach you not to delete your original before you CHECK your new location copy, right?
So, here is the deal. Set the location back to the way it was before you made the move. Close iTunes. Now copy all your stuff back from the external back to the internal the way it was before. Now before you do anything else, open iTunes and CHECK (!!!!!!) that they now play ok back in their original place. Do they?
If they do, now close iTunes and copy the entire "iTunes" folder (not just the iTunes Music folder found inside it) to the external hard drive. Now use these instructions to open the library from this new location...

Actually now that I think about it, you might be able to get away with just moving the database file to the external then using the above instructions. In other words, say you copied the "iTunes Music" over originally. On the external create an "iTunes" folder. Drag and drop the "iTunes Music" into that folder. From your internal drive, in the iTunes folder, drag and drop any other files that are not yet on the external drive like the two database files ("iTunes Library" (database file), iTunes Music Library.xml, Album Artwork folder, etc.). Once all over on the external so you have basically recreated your internal folder on the external, NOW try the instructions above to open the library from that location.

  • Storing iTunes Library on an external hard drive

I have been considering moving my iTunes Library (and iPhoto Library) to an external hard drive. I think that would make it easier for me if I decided to start downloading TV shows and movies. Right now they are too big for my powerbook's 80gb hd to store many. I think I have that part down, but I do not know what to do when I do want to temporarily put a playlist of songs or a couple videos on my laptop and play them in iTunes (or the same for iPhoto). Does anyone have any advice for me? Also, can anyone recommend a good FW800 external HD for the purpose I've described.

  • After moving files out of the iTunes library they still show in the iTunes list

I am archiving movies out of my iTunes library.  I have moved the files from the iTunes media folder and into another folder but the movies still show up in the iTunes movie list in the main iTunes window.  I am sure there is some kind of link to the file but do I need to break that somehow or can I refresh the iTunes list so it will see that the files are no longer in the media folder?

An easier way is to simply drag movies/songs from the iTunes window to where you want.
    Then delete it in iTunes.

When you add files to iTunes, it adds them to the iTunes library database file and this is what is displayed in iTunes.
I f you remove the file from its location, iTunes will not know until you try to access it in iTunes. It will then show an exclamation mark if it cannot find that file.

this may happen on external drives if:
The external drive was hotpluged (removed) without going the correct "eject" way
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
    First Aid for external drive
    Close iTunes
Unmount (eject) external drive the right way.
    Mount drive again
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up" This will force the filesystem to rescan the file structure of the drive and rebuilding the file system table and journaling file.
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive) restart iTunes
If your iTunes library is on your internal drive, this may happen
The system was not shoot down correct, e.g. "pulled the plug"
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
First Aid for internal hard drive
    Close iTunes
    Reboot system
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up"
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive)
    Reboot system, restart iTunes
If none of the above fixes your problem, post here.
