Recreate Photos library after geotagging in iPhoto?

By now I am well aware of the inability to add geotags in Photos.  I did not know this when I first loaded Photos and it imported my library from the iPhotos data file, which has a lot of untagged pictures.  Can I delete my current Photos data file, finish geotagging in iPhoto, and then later load up Photos again and recreate the library?  I would prefer this because the untagged photos are spread throughout my library, and tagging in iPhoto and then importing into Photos on a piecemeal basis would be very hard.
I am mainly just nervous about deleting the Photos data file

Yes, you can delete the Photos library and start again with your previous iPhoto Library.
And when you are finished you can upgrade the library again.
Any edits you already made in Photos will be lost, however.

can't open my photo library after upgrading to iphoto 11.  Is it possible to download iphoto 9.0.1 after installing '11.  Have followed all the other instructions and am in a loop which doesn't allow me to access iphoto or my photos.

when iphoto wouldnt open we read the trouble shooting info and it said that we may have needed to download 9.0.1 if we had an older version.  We obviously didn't download it before the upgrade and wondered if it would cause problems or indeed solve the problem if we downloaded it now!
When we try to open iphoto is says:
To open your library with this version of iphoto it first needs to be prepared
To prepare the library use the iphoto library upgrader available from Apple.
We have downloaded this twice now and it still sends us this message when we try to open iphoto.

  • HT204655 How to have a unified Photos Library after migrated from iPhoto and Aperture?

The "HT204655: Get started with Photos for OS X" do not help. If you have previously used iPhoto and Aperture, when you "migrate" the iPhoto, then follow the steps to "migrate" the Aperture library, you end up with 5 files in your Pictures folder: Photos Library (from iPhoto), Photos Library 2(from Aperture), iPhoto Library (Not sure if can be deleted or not - of course no), Aperture Library (for some reason blank), Aperture Library 2 (Created by Photos?).
So, looks like a mess and no easy way to make a clean migration.
I've a hope that exists a solution to have a single Photos Library with the merged iPhoto and Aperture contents, like a real migration.
If I export everything (From iPhoto and Aperture) then import in the Photos in a single Library should work, but will lose all the organization, faces, etc...

You could merge libraries with iPhoto Library Manager, but I never tried this for merging Aperture 3 libraries with iPhoto 8.
Are you planning to keep all your photos in iCloud? Then consider to merge them in iCloud, but it will take a long time.
Are you using iCloud Photo Library (Beta) and have enough iCloud storage for the merged library?
Wait, till your current Photos Library has been completely uploaded to iCloud.
Then quit Photos, and launch it again, while holding down the alt/options key. Select the old iPhoto lIbrary.
When the upgrade of the old library has been finished, make this library the System Photos library (in the Photos Preferences > General).
Enable again iCloud Photo Library (Beta) in the Photos > iCloud preferences.
Now Photos will upload the new library to iCloud as well and create a merged library in iCloud. After this merged library synced with your Mac, you will have a merged Photos library.

  • How do I get iphoto to upgrade photo library after upgrading os from snowleopard to yosemite?

How do I get iphoto to upgrade photo library after upgrading os from snowleopard to yosemite?

    To add to OT's advice:
You may need to delete your current iPhoto from the Applications folder, if it is a version of iPhoto '11, before the App Store will allow you to download it from the main page.
To locate iPhoto at the AppStore, open the "Featured" tab and enter "iPhoto" into the search field.

  • Can't access photo library after last update

I have a Macbook Air 13 and am running the most current Maverick (10.9.5) before Yosemite was released.
I take all updates as they arrive and are listed by AppStore.
After the last iPhoto update that came about the time Yosemite arrived I can no longer access my photo Library.
When opening iPhoto it give me a choice to upgrade my library or quit. So I tried to upgrade and after about 30 seconds iPhoto simply goes away.
I am traveling and can not do the large Yosemite upgrade, in case that is the issue, but need access to my photos.
When I plug in and sync my iPhone5S  (which is running the latest updates as well) it seems to sync but I have no way to import the photos.
I am guessing this is related to the last update but have no idea what to do in order to recover.
iPhoto 9.6 now show incompatible but I don't recall seeing this earlier.
I am running iTunes 12.0.1 and it can not access the photo settings. It just sits with the busy spinner.

iPhoto 9.6 only runs on Yosemite.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto prompt  "Which photo library do you want iPhoto to use? "

When I start iPhoto, a small window opens with the prompt, "Which photo library do you want iPhoto to use? " I have previously used iPhoto and am wondering if I should remove and reinstall iPhoto. Please help.

Thank you for the help. I deleted a couple apps that I had recently added, but the problem remained. Then, in other postings, I read that the problem was not uncommon and could be corrected by deleting the plist file; described as Mac 101. According to the postings, the plist file tracks specifics such as file location, and is replaced once the app is restarted. Have a great day !!!

  • Gone library "which photo library do you want iPhoto to use"

my photo library is gone!! and this message appear when trying to open iPhoto " which photo library do you want iPhoto to use" i have triend holding the option key and command key but leads me to the same message, Can anyone help please? i'm desperate

Does the file "iPhoto Library" simply no longer exist in your Pictures folder? You may have somehow erased it or put it in another location. Use Spotlight to search for "iPhoto Library" and see if you can find the file - the file will contain your "Masters" or "Originals" directory.
    Good luck,

  • Am I able to delete the "migrated photo library" after I convert from iPhoto to Photos?

I've recently converted to the new Photos app in OSX and have noticed there is a large library with the iPhotos library logo (52.1Gb). I'm wondering if I can safely delete this without losing any pictures from my Photos library. or if not, what is its purpose and why is it so large?
Here are some screenshots of an OmniDiskSweeper sweep of my home drive and of finder:
Any help is greatly appreciated as I have very limited disk space!

I have! And it seems that iPod cache is quite large. I think I'll go ahead and delete that and see if it reduces in size if I resync my device (I have reduced the amount of pictures I sync)
I have also deleted some files and events since trasferring to Photos (in an attempt to clear disk space). Would those changes reflect in the iPhoto library or is that a snapshot of my iPhoto library at the time of trasfer? I'm satisfied with my Photos library, so I may go ahead and delete the iPhoto one since its larger (I also have a backup on a drive of the full library before deleting)
Here is the memory distribution in both libraries:

  • I can't view my photo library after upgrading to version 9.1.3.. How do I fix?

I recently updated my iphoto to verson 9.1.3. Now when I open up the application, it says "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade." It then gives me a option to click upgrade. Once I click it, It says I cant view my current photo library using this version of iphoto. It also says, You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto. Then it makes me quit the app even though I have and am using the latest version of Iphoto. How do I fix this please?

That's an indication of a damage library.  Try the following: make a temporary, duplicate copy of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file,, Cache.db, that is located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • ICloud Photo Library: How to sync iPhoto/Aperture albums?

After installing iOS 8 and trying to access Photos, users are presented with a notification titled, "iCloud Photo Library (Beta)." A subsequent message warns, "Photos synced from iTunes will be removed. Syncing photos via iTunes is not supported when iCloud Photo Library is turned on. (#) photos will be removed."
What is this supposed to mean?
Mac users may currently organize photos into events and albums using iPhoto or Aperture. Until now, they could also select specific albums and events to sync to specific iOS devices via iTunes. According to this message, if the user turns on iCloud Photo Library then these synced photos will be deleted from the iOS devices and they will no longer be able to sync them with iTunes. However there is no explanation of whether, when, or how this functionality will be replaced.
My hope and expectation is that the upcoming Photos app for OS X will allow users to import their iPhoto or Aperture library with all events, albums, and meta data intact, provide the option to upload their collection to iCloud Photo Library, and then allow specific photos, albums, and/or events to be viewed and/or downloaded on to specific OS X and iOS devices.
Assuming this assumption is correct, though, we'll have to wait until next year's release of Photos for OS X to regain this functionality.  If that's the case, this advisory should explicitly say so.

Because IMO Apple has never cracked photo management, I organise all my photos on my MacBook and sync the photo's folder to my iPad and iPhone via iTunes. This gives me the organisation I require, but it means I cannot do much at all with the synced folder except view the photos on my iPad and iPhone.
I just enabled the iCloud Photo Library on my iPhone, this deleted all the iTunes synced folders from my device, I expected it to upload all those photos to the cloud and then delete them from the device, but it actually just deleted them all and uploaded a few odd's and sods I had in my camera roll.
I am currently unsure how to get my main photo library into the cloud as the Photos app is not yet available for Mac!
So do not enable it if you manage your photos like me and you want your back catalogue!!
I am very hopeful that Apple is about to crack photos management in an MASSIVE way, but until the Mac Photos's app come out continuity between iOS and Mac OS is still very broken.

  • I can't upload photos to facebook from the photo library after upgrading to iOS 8

AFter updating ios8 i can't upload photos from photo library to fcebook..even i can't upload photos with safari browser...what can i do now??

It is peculiar, that Chrome, Safari, and Skype can access FB, but not the iPhoto uploader.
Do you see any error messages/ diagnostics in the Console Window, when you try to connect to Facebook?
Launch a Console window from Applications > Utilities and clear the Console Window. Then try to upload. Are there any new messages?
And also launch a Terminal and have a look, if "facebook.com" is properly resolved:
    Type
    ping facebook.com
into the window. Do you see any transmissions? What is the IP address used?

  • Duplicates appearing in my main Photos library after sharing an album

I shared a couple of albums since "upgrading" to Photos, and now almost all shared pictures are duplicated in my main Photos menu. The get info menu shows two diferences. The size of the file and .JPEG (all caps) versus .jpg (small caps). Anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions? I started erasing the duplicates and now all seems OK, but I fear the problem might appear again when I share my next album.
I haven't yet enabled iCloud Photo Library, but I have Photo streaming and iCloud Photo sharing enabled.

    I'm not a 100% sure.
I had som many duplicates after my import to Photo (from iPhoto), and while some were zombie files, and others because I had screwed a little with my iPhoto package. But when I imported I did have several albums shared, and they were all duplicated.
I unshared all my albums, and I'm currently working on cleaning up my library before sharing again (so I have a good base to start from).
Here is what I think might be happening (or at least hope, otherwise it's a big bug): When you share an album... as far as iCloud is concerned, they are probably treated as separate items in the cloud. Which means Photos is creating a copy. I have the feeling that if you delete the original in your library, the copy you have shared will remain.
But the thing that probably shouldn't happen, is that Years/Collections/Moments is displaying both the master version you had originally, and the version that is shared.
Remember... these are only my thoughts, since I'm not at the point of testing this yet.
