Recreating My Previous Set-up After Performing Erase and Install

Hi!
After long consideration, I want to perform an Erase and Install due to all sorts of system software issues. I have backed up my HD with Carbon Copy Cloner and Time Machine. I also have a .Mac account. Once the erase and install is complete, I want to reimport important files from the backups.
A few questions:
1) Does anyone have any tips on reimporting? Is there a preferred chronological order for re-install ing software or documents?
2) Of special concern is an applications like iCal where the program will be installed but the data may be buried someplace in the library. Will Time Machine help with this?
3) My previous system had three users. Will I need to create these same three users before I use Time Machine? Or will Time Machine create the users for me?
4) I have seen references to using Time Machine via the Leopard install disk. How does this work -- and why?
5) I figure it is fairly easy to copy simple documents from one hard drive to another and they will work the same as they always did. But are there some programs or files that need more extensive attention (like the aforementioned iCal)? When is it okay to simply copy a program to another HD and when is it necessary to actually reinstall it from scratch?
These are my first concerns. I would appreciate any assistance.
Thank you!

Time Machine isn't really meant to "restore settings." It's meant for one of two operations:
1) Recover a single file that you accidentally delete. (Or a single folder, etc).
2) Restore your entire hard disk in case of a catastrophic failure.
This means, for example, that you can't do a fresh install of Leopard (to fix any problems you're having) and then use Time Machine to restore all of your system preferences to the way you had them. You'll need to do that manually.
As for doing the install on your external drive and then cloning: No. I don't recommend that. Instead, back up everything and wipe your internal hard disk. Install Leopard fresh. Install all your applications fresh (Not from the Time Machine backup.) After that's done, then plug in your external hard disk and use the Finder to drag your Photos, Music, Videos, Documents and Calendars, Address Book Data, and Bookmarks to your freshly-redone internal drive.
That's the correct way to go about it. While your idea may work, it's not a good approach to wipe your backup drive. Then, if something goes wrong, you have no second copy of your data.

  • Restore files from last Time Machine backup after HD erase and install

I just had to do an "erase and install" ... trying to restore files from my last Time Machine backup but after completing the Airport Utility setup / configure steps, it says "waiting to restart" for a few minutes and then says it cannot find TIme Capsule after restart (though TC never restarted). I'm pretty desperate to get my files back as it's Sunday night and my business needs to be up and running by morning. Any help would be greatly appreciated ... even if it's saying I need to take TC into a Mac store to have them retrieve my files.

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

Use the +Migration Assistant+ utility, either directly from the Erase & Install process, or in your Applications/Utilities folder.
Why did you do Erase and Install, rather than just +Restore from Time Machine Backup?+

  • Problems after an "erase and install"

    Hi,
I recently had problems with my mac and i needed to do an "erase and install" with the original Mac OS cd. Perhaps, before loosing all of my data, i saved it on an other macbook.
When i re-install my Mac Os software and all of my data (pictures included) i've just realize that i've lost the software iphoto 8 that came originaly with my computer.
When i bought the computer about a year ago, there was no cd of iLife or the iPhoto software with it.
How can I have iPhoto back?
    Thanks
    Fred

It's on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Opt to install "Bundled Applications Only".

  • ITunes: Recreating my Purchased folder after an erase and install

Every few months or so I wipe my HD clean and reinstall WinXP to keep everything fresh.
Doing this blows out my purchased folder on iTunes.
Is there any soft of designation within iTunes that would alert me to purchased music after my library has been rebuilt ?

Your purchased playlist in iTunes can be rebuilt using a Smart playlist.
Click File > New Smart Playlist
    Match the following Rule:
    Kind contains Protected
    Kind contains Purchased
Select 'live updating' and leave the other 2 unchecked
    Click OK
This creates a dark purple smart playlist in the playlist section of your source pane (left-hand column). If you wish to have these appear with the green purchased icon under store, make a purchase from iTunes after rebuilding your library, and then drag the purple smart playlist to the newly created green playlist.
    Hope this is helpful

  • After an erase and fresh SL install...

Everything so far seems like a success. All my data has been restored from my Time Capsule. I have no issues, but my question is: I read somewhere once (obivously cant remember where) that after an erase and install you need to delete the copy of the backup so Im not wasting hard drive space...
So where is is "copy" or extra files that I need to delete after a successfull erase and install. Is this true? Are there files I need to delete, if so where can i find them to delete them?
thanks a bunch, this forum is a life saver!

Thanks for the info it was very helpful. Just so we are clear...
I stuck in the SL disc.
    Restarted my MBP
Held down C at the startup sound,
    SL disc started up,
went into Disk Utilities, erased my MBP HD
after it was erased I exited disk utilities and installed a fresh copy of SL
after about 45min, I was up and running. My MBP started up as a brand new machine running SL.
I restored from my time capsule to get all my apps and data back on the machine.
    Then updated to SL 10.6.1
that's where I'm at now... Sorry for the step by step but I just want to be sure there is no extra/unneccessary files on my MBP.
From what you said if I have no "previous system" folder then I have no files I need to delete.
I'm not near my MBP right now, and I'm a fairly new Mac user.
To get to the "root" of my MBP hard drive (to see if a prev systems folder is there) I just need to click on my MBP HD in the finder and I should see the folder if there is one there?
Thanks in advance. Sorry for the basic questions but just looking for some clarification/peace of mind.

  • Restore after Erase and Install

Depending on the answer I get to another question, I might have to erase and reinstall system 10.3 on my ancient Yosemite.
I have already backed up my entire HD to an external drive using third-party backup software. Presumably the backup softare itself has been backed up.
How do I restore my user settings, Entourage email files, other files, etc. after the erase and install?
I have run into trouble in the past with reinstalls and don't want to go thru that again.

These are personal choices only you can make.
You say you have two places from which to get a working copy of your 10.3 software:
Choice #1) Erase and install 10.3 from scratch using Apple tools:
This will give you a positively excellent version of your 10.3 software. But will return you to a completely "factory fresh" version with NONE of your personal files at all.
Choice #2) Use the Restore function in your Backup software:
This will return all the files on your Mac to the moment of your Backup, and re-install all personal files along with anything troublesome that had already happened by the time you made your Backup.
Provided that it works as intended, which is not guaranteed.
    Choice #3) Combined approach:
    1) Erase and Install the System Files with Apple Tools;
    2) then recreate your Users (and their passwords) in System Preferences > Accounts;
    3) use your Backup software to restore the "Users" directory structure, which contains all Users files including email and preferences (except the Account specification and password itself).
Provided that it works as intended, which is not guaranteed.
It is possible that despite your best intentions, certain files have not been backed up. Files that come to mind are Address Books, on which the system tends to restrict permissions so that they are difficult to hack and difficult to copy. Keychains may similarly be difficult to backup and restore.

  • After erase and install, is the old data still recoverable?

    Hello,
I'm doing an erase and install on a mini that I want to sell. Can I be sure that the old files are gone? After an erase and install can someone use a disk recovery program to get old files? Do I have to use Disk Utility to zero the drive?
    Thanks
    Bob

Here's a series of steps to prepare the computer for sale:
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
    First, back up the data:
    1) Shut down all Virtual PCs. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
    2) Clone to an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner.
Next, prepare the machine for the new buyer:
    3) Deauthorize the computer in iTunes! Deauthorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
    4) Remove Open Firmware passwords
    5) Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
    Install a fresh OS:
    6) Insert the OS X install CD/DVD.
    7) Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
    8) Run Disk Utility from the file menu and erase the internal hard drive (optionally zero all data).
    9) Install OS X.
    10) Reboot the computer.
    11) From the welcome screen, you can skip the registration step by typing command-Q.
    12) When prompted, create an account (it will be an admin account).
    13) From your new admin account, configure networking.
    14) Then use Software Update to bring your system and all of it's applications up to date.
    15) From Disk Utility, repair permissions on the new volume.
Now delete the account you just created:
    16) Boot from a different volume (e.g. a firewire drive, if available)
    17) Clean up the image using the following terminal commands:
    prompt> rm /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/BootCache.playlist
    prompt> rm /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/volinfo.database
    prompt> rm -r /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/vm/swap*
    18) Now you can get rid of the admin account you used to set up the machine Use the terminal:
    prompt> nicl -raw /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb -delete /users/<admin>
    prompt> rm -r /Volumes/<imagevol>/Users/<admin>
    prompt> rm /Volumes/<imagevol>/var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    19) Shut down and ship it to your buyer. When they get it, it will boot to the Welcome screen just like a factory Mac, except that it's better because it's completely up to date.

  • Leopard 10.5.7 refuses to launch applications after "erase and install"

I have an older iMac G5 (1.6Mhz PPC, 2 Gb RAM) born with Panther OS. I wanted to update some applications so I could have a secure browser and other apps. I upgraded the RAM to 2 Gb as a first step. The additional RAM really perked up the old iMac so the next step was to update the OS to 10.5.6 using a DVD that was printed in Jan '09 and sold as part of a bundle pack with the new iLife 09 and iWork 09.
I thought I could get away with an overwrite installation and I knew there were risks in doing that. The result was a really bugey computer with frequent terminal views, kernel panics and even hard shut downs. Apple issued the 10.5.7 update and that helped stabilize the system somewhat.
I still had problems with instablility of the OS and with Safari 3.2.3, Firefox 3 and other applications. I decided to reinstall Leopard using the archive and install procedure. The 2nd install stabilized the OS but I still had problems with browsers and Open Office refusing to launch.
I did lots of troubleshooting using Onyx, MemTest OSX, repair permissions in the Disk Utility, etc. I created a new user account and the problems persisted. I decided to try a third install of the OS using the Erase and Install procedure.
The system now has Safari 4.0.1 but after a few page views Safari crashed and now it crashes as soon as you launch it. A freshly downloaded Camino browser does the same thing. iTunes, System Profiler and a fresh download of Onyx also refuse to launch. All of them crash while launching.
I can launch an ancient version of IE and Firefox 3 from the desktop.
After the last OS X install, I noticed the system did not accept the first attempts at downloading the Leopard updates and the Safari update. A second attempt was successful for both. I am reluctanct to proceed with installing anymore applications until I can fix what I believe is a problem with the OS. The OS worked well after the archive and install procedure and I am thinking it should be able to work at least as well after the erase and install.
I live in a rural area and the nearest Apple "genius" counter is about a 5 hour round trip. Is there anyone out there that has encountered this problem?

The Internet Explorer came with the iMac and I never used it. I had it on a disk so I put it on the desktop to get a download of Camino after Safari failed. It's so old that most websites can't render for it unless they have some html default page.
Here is what the Crash Reporter log had. The iTunes was on the OS X install disk. The Camino browser was downloaded from Caminobrowser.org.

  • Reinstalling docs and pics after "erase and install"

What is the easiest way to load my documents and pictures back to my imac from an external drive after an erase and install procedure?
    OSX 10.5.8
    Thanks.

In the sidebar of a Finder window, select the icon representing your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) At the top level of the volume are folders with these names, among others:
    Applications
    Library
    System
Enter Time Machine and select the most recent snapshot, which is behind the frontmost window. Are those folders present in the snapshot?

  • .Mac Sync and Erase and Install

I have .Mac set to sync my keychain items, calendars, contacts, bookmarks, mail accounts and rules, and Yojimbo notes. If I perform an Erase and Install of Leopard, and add my .Mac account information and sync the same items, will those items be restored on my computer, or wiped out on .Mac since they would all be empty after an Erase and Install?

    Hey there,
As long as you have authorized your computer and erased and synced with your new library, then you should be ok. Just be 100% sure that all your original music and files that were on your iPod are in your new iTunes library. Then, go ahead and "Erase and Sync." Hope this helps.

  • MBP Freezes (have erased and installed, ran disk utility, and inc fan speed

Hi Guys, Any advice on this issue would be very much appreciated please.
Have had an original mbp for about 2 and a half years. Last few weeks it's been freezing between 1 and 5 times a day. By freezing I mean that the screen freezes and there's no cursor or keyboard fuctionality. Sound stops too. This happens using World of Warcraft, Pages, Office for Mac, and Safari, sometimes also the finder. Main culprit though is Safari and WoW. For comedy value, I'm a priest in WoW and it froze during a raid which resulted in the whole group wiping out! Great timing! lol
    So far I have:
Ran disk utility, repaired permissions and verified disk.
Did a complete erase and install.
Downloaded Fan Control and set to 3400 base speed, left fan @ 3503 RPM and Right fan @ 3508 RPM - temp reads 46.9 oC (118 oF)
I'm guessing that since my erase and install, that it is very much a hardware issue as the problem has happened again.
Since I've done the fan thing, nothing has frozen so far but I only did it about an hour ago.
If anyone could offer any other suggestions in case it does freeze again I'd be very grateful indeed :0)
Oh - one thing I don't get is that only about 4 hours after my erase and install I did the disk utility once more (Repair permissions and verify) and it came up with the below list - which is huge given it was a fresh install. Not sure if the below info will help (not really sure what it's for tbh - but there it is.
    Many thanks,
    Vizzy

According to Mactracker, your Mac could recognize 3 GB of RAM:
    http://www.mactracker.ca/
One thing to check is your RAM usage while playing WOW. I am not a gamer, so I don't know if you can play with your Dock visible, but if you can, here is an easy way to keep track of your RAM usage.
Go to Activity Monitor (in your Utilities folder in your Applications folder) and put it in the Dock. Then while in Activity Monitor, go to View (in the menu bar)>Dock Icon and select "Show Memory Usage".
You want to see a lot of green in the pie chart. If you don't, you are running out of RAM and then the computer turns to your hard drive to fulfill the functions of RAM. This process is much slower, and I could see it resulting in freezes. If you find that the green virtually disappears while gaming, you could well benefit from upping the RAM by another 1 GB to 3 GB total.
    Good luck!

  • Authorizing songs in iTunes after performing an erase and install

    Hi
This one should be a simple one for someone to solve.
I'm running Panther 10.3.9 - I've had to perform a 'erase and install', and now all the tunes I'ved purchased from iTunes are not authorised to play.
I understand this is because my iTunes account thinks my reformatted machine is 'new' but how can I get around this as I dont want to add another 'authorized machine' to my list on my iTunes account.
    Anyone got any ideas?!
    Jenny

If you have authorized five machines(the maximum) to play purchased music, you will be given the chance to deauthorize all the computers from your Account Information screen; otherwise, use this form to send a message to the people who can deauthorize your old system.

  • Can't access Time Machine backups after erase and install

Had iMac checked by Apple Authorized Service Provider after experiencing multiple problems I couldn't fix. No hardware problem. He did an erase and install of 10.5.8. The machine accesses my Time Machine backup, but in Time Machine/ iMacHome/ Sharing & Permissions says, "You can only read." If I access a folder in Home, like Desktop or Documents, it says,"You have no access." Permissions are locked and grayed out.
I spent over two hours on the phone with tech support last evening, and he finally said he'd have to turn it over to Apple engineers, which would take a few days.
Migration assistant only allows "all or nothing" migration, and I need to select just certain folders; I do not want to restore anything that might be corrupted.
Is it possible I could have an undetected hardware problem? Has anyone else done an erase and install and been able to use Time Machine backups to pick and choose what they wanted to restore?

Thank you for your reply. The apple support tech should have known this, but he didn't. However, in the course of our two hour discussion he said "Maybe it's because the computer name is different." I hadn't reached the new-set-up stage where I had changed the name of the computer from Apple's default, so I did that. My short name home folder I had already named the same as before, iMacHome.
But changing the computer name didn't help. After reading your reply, I unlocked the preferences (which were locked and grayed out in TM) to my home folder in the finder and assigned read and write to all folders within for everyone. Back in TM, preferences were no longer grayed out, but changing privileges was. I added iMacHome to the names in addition to staff read & write and everyone read and write. But ImacHome(Me) allows read only, options gray, and even though everyone is read and write, it says "You can only read" and I still cannot access Desktop, Documents, etc...
Fortunately I have a SuperDuper user file backup that I am restoring from, so all is not lost. But it seems to me TM backups should be readily available, and I want to solve this problem. I may still want to go back to a previous month to recover something. But mostly I'd just like to know that TM is a functional backup. It certainly isn't in my case right now.
Don't want to migrate the entire home folder. Too risky. Risky enough to bring over Mail and selected Application Support folders and keychains.
Thanks again. I think your answer is right on, but there must still be something else. I know I have those names correct because I see the old computer name on the sparse bundle, and the old home name in the TM backups. (Haven't read the tips yet. Will do so.)

  • Software Update simply not updating after erase and install.

Help. I have an intel imac that was recently reinstalled of the OSX after I decided to custom install. Previously, it was running on 10.5.5. I did the erase and install with the option of of selecting the MAC OS Extended (Journaled). As for the custom installation, all I did was to select only the HP printer driver, while the rest I have unchecked.
Currently, the version is 10.5.2 and I have tried to run the software updating. There is a MacOSUpdate combo 10.5.5. I have downloaded it and during installation, halfway of updating the OS, the bar just seem to hang for a long time. Now is this normal? I have waited for an hour or so and there seem no respond or any sign of the OS is being updated.
What did I do wrong? I am posting from Malaysia. Could it be an asia server problem?

did you attempt the update using  - Software Update or did you download the 10.5.5 Combo Updater?
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/
    or
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_5_ComboUpdate
By the way, that site is not working for me this morning so there may be server issues, I don't know if there are problems with the Apple servers or if my local ISP is having problems, again.
I have internet issues because I live in the country so internet service is not good. I always download the full updater before I try to install it.
Another good habit - After your install, Run Disk Utility Repair Permissions and Disk Utility Verify Disk. I run those two before and after each install or Update. Some gurus here say is it not necessary to do that, but I always do it - before and after - and I have never had an installation failure or update failure.
    Hope that helps.
