Rectangle Marquee selection tool inaccurate at 100%

When I make a selection with the rectangle selection tool in Photoshop at 100% it will usually start the marquee 1 pixel to the right of where I clicked and then shift left 1 pixel.
Or, other times it will make the selection correctly when I am dragging - but once I release it shifts to the right 1 pixel.
This makes creating a selection infuriating as the buggy behavior isnt even consistant and changes every time I re-select the tool
Resetting the tool does not help.

For me, the Markee selection tool is inaccurate at any %, shifted by ~1px to the right on the left edge. An INCREDIBLY frustrating problem, as others have pointed out. This was an issue in CS4 and now also on CS5, on an Intel Mac:

Does Illustrator have an equivalent to Photoshop's rectangular marquee selection tool?

I am trying to select just a piece of an image in an Illustrator file to copy and re-scale, but I can't find the equivalent to Photoshop's rectangular marquee selection tool. Is there such a tool? Otherwise, I guess I can make the edits in photoshop and place in illustrator. Thanks!

There are workarounds, but if you want to do yourself a favour, just do it in Photoshop or another Raster application.

Marquee Selection Tool - Constrain

Is there a way to constrain the rectangle and circle selection tools to squares and circles?

I didn't see an option myself. (Right now, you can only expand/contract the current selection and any attempt at resizing using the transform option also transforms the pixels within the selection.)
Might be something for the wishlist.

Marquee selection tool won't move like it used to...

It only wants to subract from the selection, even though I have not hit the alt key. I've restarted many times. The oval marquee works just fine; only the rectangular one doesn't. It just started doing this.... so odd. I have CS5. Thanks!

Rectangler marquee tool seems to be feathering my selection ?

Hi everybody
I have selected some content, that is 100% solid colour and no Alpha, in my image with Rectangler Marquee Tool (with feather set to 0px). I want open this content in a new window so i ctrl-c or ctrl-shift-c, then make new document ctrl-n and paste it in. When I zoom in, 1 pixel on the left and right sides are partially transparent.
I'd very much appreciate some clarity on this as it has brought my web-design to a halt

Uncheck the Anti-Aliasing setting. This setting helps reduce jagged edges, but essentially feathers the selection at the edges.

Rectangle marquee tool is rounding at the edges, how to I revert to sharp edges?

The rectangle marquee tool is rounding at the edges of my selections and when I try to fill with solid color, it fills very transparently and almost water-color like.
I don't know how the settings were changed, but I need help reverting them back to normal.
FYI: When I select an area using the rectangle marquee tool, an error message pops up that says "Warning: No pixels are more than 50% selected. The selection edges will not be visible."
I am not very savvy with this program, but need to finish creating a flyer by this afternoon. Please help!

Wont let me "drag" the rectangle marquee tool or text box tool.

Hey photoshop wizards... I need your help. I have CS4 and when I use the rectangle marquee tool or text tool... it wont let me click and drag an area that I want. It automatically selects a box from the top left corner of my image to where I clicked. It also does not let me move the box with the move tool once its made. Ive reset all the tools and this has not helped. If you know what Im talking about... please help me as it is preventing me from continuing my work. Thank you.

You don't say what OS.
First thing I do when things get goofy is to trash the prefs. This is covered in the FAQs if you don't know how.

Can't reshape rectangle with the "Selection Tool"

After updating Illustrator CC 2014 to the newest versions I can't reshape rectangles with the "Selection Tool".
Is this a new feature where you have to go to: "Shape > Expand rectangle" to be able to reshape it?

I am afraid you have come across the Live Rectangle bug which is limited to the MAC versions starting with 10.7 and 10.8, but not 10.9 (Mavericks).
So a switch to Mavericks with a reinstallation might be the way to solve it here and now.
To get round it in each case, it is possible to Expand the Live Rectangles to get normal old fashioned rectangles, or to Pathfinder>Unite, or to use the Scale Tool.
A more permanent way round that is to create normal old fashioned rectangles, after running the free script created by Pawel, see this thread with download link:

Selection tool not transforming rectangles but works fine with other shapes

I can't transform rectangle shapes with the selection tool. I've already tried showing the bounding box (command+shift+B), but it still doesn't work. I have no transforming issues with any of the other shapes, just the rectangles. Please help!

The arrow select tool does not marquee

The arrow select tool does not work properly. At times it marquees and some other times it doesn't.

Has it worked with Yosemite before?
Did you upgrade to Yosemite, then reinstall? That is the recommended way/order.
Especially if the tool has just stopped working, there may be some kind/level of corruption/disturbance, and you may try the list.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file, and when it is not caused by issues with opening a file from external media, see below. You may have tried/done some of them already; 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible), for CS3 - CC you may find the folder here:

5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);

6) Uninstall (ticking the box to delete the preferences), run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

My rectangle marquee tool won't draw 90 degree corners...it defaults to a round corner.

My rectangle marquee tool has stopped drawing right angle corners. When I use the tool and mark the area, as long as I hold the mouse down I have right angles, As soon as I release the mouse the corners become rounded. It must be a simple toggle, but I can't find it,

Ai 5.5 what is brown select rectangle appearing when I click select tool?

When I click the select tool, a brown selection type of rectangle appears in a particular area of the illustration, even though I have not clicked on the illustration yet. I assume it is some type of warning indication, but don't know what. P.S. It is draggable and scaleable - I can move it off the artboard. An example:

I went back, opened the ai file again. Brown rectangle was still there at open time, when I clicked the select tool, but after I selected some different layers, and then deselected, the brown rectangle went away, so I guess it was just an artifact of some sort.
I had been selecting for stray points, brush strokes, etc. shortly before.

Rectangle Selection Tool... Error...

I am having an error regarding the selection tool once I select normally the + sign adds itself and stays without me clicking on shift key, unles I change a button on the menu it won't go away, I can't use it normally (shift and mouse for the + sign to appear)... that's a bug definitely, on CS6 Photoshop.

Aspect ratio of selection tools locked in CS4

Suddenly, all tools that produce a marquee during dragging are locked to a 1-1 aspect ratio, as though the shift key were depressed. For example, with the rectangular selection tool, a square marquee is displayed during dragging. However, when I let the mouse button up, the selected rectangle is not square, but has corners at the start and end points of the drag. If I depress the shift key before releasing the mouse button, I get the square selection corresponding to the displayed marquee.
This behaviour affects all selection tools that display a rectangle-bounded marquee (rectangle, ellipse, crop), as well as drawing tools. Similarly, transformation tools such as scale and transform also act as though the shift key were depressed during dragging, but, when the mouse button is released, produce a result which one would expect if the shift key had not been depressed (unless it is depressed as the mouse is button is released).
Any help to resolve this would be most appreciated!

I've been having the same problem. I had it occasionally with Photoshop CS3 and I've recently upgraded to CS5 and it just occurred again. I would love to figure out why this happens.
