Recurrent dying hard disks

Last week I turned on my iBook (800MHz G4 12-inch) and the hard disk started spinning up very rapidly. When logging into my user account it started 'squealing' before resuming the fast hard disk spinning, and the computer would not respond.
I started up with the apple hardware test, and running the quick test got the error "2STF/4/3: ATA- 100 ata- 6 - Master". Running the test a second time gave "2STF/1/4: ATA- 100 ata- 6 - Master".
I realise this is an issue with the hard disk. However, I then restarted with the 10.4 DVD and ran disk utility. It took half an hour to actually find the hard disk, and failed to repair the disk, but I did manage to reformat and reinstall the OS. Now disk utility reports no problems with the hard disk (even SMART verified) and there are no errors with apple hardware test.
This is not the first time I have had this problem. The hard disk died with the same error coming up at the end of last year. The hard disk was replaced at an authorised apple repair centre, only for it to die again and get replaced a second time at the same repair centre. It happened again a few months ago, but I was able to reformat it as described above. So this latest episode will be the forth time. I have booked it in to get repaired again, but I am doubtful this will resolve the problem.
These hard disk crashes usually occur without warning, and involve the loss of anything that I have not backed up. This is a problem since I use my iBook extensively for university and my job (in fact the original crash included the loss of most of my course work).
Is there a limit to the number of times applecare will repair a defective computer before replacing it? Or should I cut my losses, cancel applecare, and get another mac, since this is the first time I've ever had problems with an apple product?
Cheers,
Malcolm

Well I the repair centre looked at my list of problems, and instead of just replacing the hard disk, they ran apple diagnostic software (a bit like the apple hardware test but takes about 5 hours to run) and it turns out there was a problem with the logic board. So the logic board is going to get replaced, and hopefully everything will be great.
Laura, you could suggest this the next time your iBook needs fixing. As for the iMac, hopefully that was a one off. Good luck

  • Mac died, hard disk data recoverable - does this include Desktop files?

    Hi there,
My G5 died (well, it fell victim to my ex's violent outrage - logic board dead), anyway... I have had my hard disk made up so I can mount it / access it on my new mac. But will this include the files that were saved on my Desktop?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bree

The desktop is just a graphical representation of a folder inside your User's home folder. Naturally, the folder is named "Desktop." For those that work in a cluttered environment and have a hard time finding files or folders on their desktop, you can see the contents of the desktop in alpha/numeric list view by going to the desktop folder (Users->[your user name]->Desktop).

  • MacBook hard disk just died

Guess what? After suffering from the worst case of RSS, which led to two logic board replacements, after one palm rest, keyboard and trackpad area replacement due to discoloring, after all that suffering and lost time, after suffering from the huge quantities of heat produced by the MacBook which letd to a crack in the 100% wooden desk I put it on, I now, yes me, get a question marked folder when I start my macBook. Aparently the hard disk just died!
I tried everything, there's no way any application from the MacOS Disc 1 becomes aware of the hard disk's existance now, it's just gone forever.
It really makes one think about the quality of the parts used to make the MacBook and recent Apple hardware.
I know I'll go next week to the Apple rep to ask for the disk replacement that will take some time to get here (and surely they will send me the same 60Gb when they do send it) and then reinstall the whole thing.
I just wonder what will come off next??
    Best,
    Pedro
MacBook (Week 20, Replaced LogicBoard twice), White 1.83Ghz Core Duo, 2Gb   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Also: PowerBook G4, Airport Express, iPod Nano

Yeah they will change it, but to my point again, what will come off then? and will it be on warranty when that happens? And what about my lost time, files, work, money, life?? —This is getting to my nerves the guys at the Apple shop are like: Hmm, here comes the MacBook guy again!?!?!
I didn't drop it, I treat it like it's my baby. It just died there sitting on the desk.
What kind of crappy hard drives are they putting in this machines, that last just seven months?
Is this the next RSS, behold the new HDDS (Hard Disk Dying Syndrome!)??
    Best,
    Pedro

  • Hard disk died--how to get iMovie back?

My hard disk died a year ago, and I lost all the contents of my hard drive, including iMovie. How can I get it back, short of purchasing iLife? I don't seem to have an iMovie software CD to replace the program.
    Thanks.
    PowerBookG4

If you have 10.2, iMovie is on the second OS X disk in the Additional Applications package. Just double click to run the installer and it will install iMovie 2. It will not touch later versions of iMovie, iPhoto etc that you already have.
You may (if you wish) also need to download a program called Pacifist, from here
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
Use Pacifist to open the Additional Applications package.
If you have 10.1, read here:

  • Is my hard disk telling me it gonna die?

    Hi all,
I have all sorts of troubles since I install (after initialising it, with zero write) Snow Leopard on my MacBook 2.'GHZ, 2008-11.
Now, a newly created window opens in the top middle of the screen (instead of some pixels from the left).
I also get tons of errors using the MacBook (most of the AppleScripts created after the install) works or not, I never know before executing them if they will work or not (most of the time, they just do not work).
Extensions off boot leads to the same experience.
Disk Utilities: check or Repair hard disk find no error, repair the permission does not modify anything.
Every advice will be checked carefully.

I am not sure if installing SL on an external hard disk is an effective test.
Yes, an external is a perfect way to test a new system. Then, when you're sure it's OK just clone it over to your internal using SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.
I believe what Barry is suggesting, is that you reapply The 10.6.3 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
When you reformat, make it "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"

  • My hard disk died with confidential information, what does Apple do with the data?

My question is: does Apple guarantee that the data from a dead hard disk will be destroyed? I'm in Chile and the authorized support stores don't handle that information.
    What can I do?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for your answer.
The problem is that they sent the disk to the US and are expecting to get a new one in a few weeks (yes, I'll be that long without my computer).
Does anyone know what Apple does to dead disks when they get them?

  • Win PC Died But Hard Disk Ok

The mother board went out on a Windows vista PC. I beleive that I can get access to the hard disk by setting up on another computer. If I can get access to the files, how can I move the itunes stuff to a new laptop.

Search the drive for items with the itl extension, and then either drag the iTunes folder to the new drive or launch iTunes with the Shift key held down and point it there.

  • Satellite L670 - Hard Disk Dead after 8 months only

    Hi,
this morning I had to retunr my laptop due to bad hard disk problem. After 8 months, it's dead already.
The positive points are: I am still under warranty and second the toshiba software hilighted me on time, allowing me to back up my data before the crash. Tks Toshiba for this tool, very usefull.
The question is, how can a hard disk die that quick after just fews months ?
Bad luck or bad use ? I am wondering.
I wish to have a feedback from those who owns same model, L670 (windows 7), to understand if this problem is commun or if I was unluckily concerned.
Also, if there are possible solutions to avoid HD stress in the daily use ? Like for example, reduce writing on it (back up of blu-ray using AnyDvD HD ON hd, then cut&paste to external HD), or to not connect too often external hard disk to avoid electricity surcharge if any ?
In future, will I have to perform chkdsk more often ? Defrag ? If yes, at which frequency ?
This is my 3rd laptop dying, Sony VAIO = mothercard dead after 1.2 years, Fujitsu Amilo xi = explosed after 3 years, and now Toshiba HD after 8 months.
From 900EUR up to 1600EUR, I do not see a significative resistance of one of those models, Sony was the badest ever in terms of video card longevity and compatibility (games unplayable after 2 months, no driver update), keyboard "painting" was a mess with deterioration after fews months compared to Fujitsu and Toshiba (no pb). Toshiba L670 more recent, was the best in terms of game compatibility.
What to do ? Stop buying laptop or use it only fews hours a day with a PC on top ?
For time beeing I can't afford to have a PC + a laptop as I am unemployed, surviving with 10EUR/day,
time to find a job again.
Despite this situation, I managed to buy new Zelman notebook cooler for my Toshiba at around 40/50EUR, but, it didn't help apparently.
Tks for feedback about L670 duration life, and particulary HD problem + best use to protect it.
    Guillaume

    You're not the only one.
I bought an L670 in September last year. It was strictly for home use as replacement for a desktop PC, so it was never moved.
Just after a few weeks things started to go wrong: boot fails, programs crashing, Windows 7 crashing...
It's almost 7 months now since purchase and I'm writing this message on the very same notebook with 'Hard Disk Sentinel' running in the background, reporting more bad sectors every day. It tells me that hard disk health is now down to only 9% and that it has an estimated 14 days to live.
Since the notebook is technically still running fine, I don't think I can have the HDD replaced under warranty or am I wrong? Does the HDD have to cease working alltogether before I can have it replaced under warranty?

  • Can I use the time capsule as backup and hard disk at the same time?

    Hi.
I want to buy a time capsule.
I wondered, if I can use the time capsule as backup (over time machine) and as a hard disk at the same time?
If I buy the 2TB time capsule, I wanted to use 1TB for the backup and 1TB for hard disk.
    Is this possible?
    Best wishes
    Sophie

It is not recommended.. the problem being anything stored on the TC only is not backed up and cannot be backed up by the TC itself or Time Machine. So what are you going to do about back.. the TC can and do die suddenly.. and the cost of recovery can be huge.
See Q3 here for the semi-right way to do it if you must.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
You can plug a USB drive into the TC and use that for files.. but note, its speed is poor.. fine for wireless as wireless is even slower but you will really notice it if you expect the drive to be as fast as the internal.. it will be a fraction of the internal drive speed. 1/2 write and 1/3 read aprox.

  • It seems like I just missed the interval for the hard disk replacement program. I purchased in March 2009 a 24 inch Intel iMac . How much does it cost to have apple support at an Apple Store replace a hard drive?

My hard drive continually has the floating beach ball and will take massive time to fulfill a request. And then will not boot up...so then I have to do a restore and rebuild hard drive from a past saved time machine version. Works for a little bit...then the floating beachball comes more and more...until it will not boot up again. So then I restore from a previous time machine saved version....and again it works for a day or so ... until it happens again. Now it's happening faster and faster...so I think my hard drive is dying.

  • Hard Disk not exist! But spins up ok

Hey guys, I've got a HP Pavilion DV5 1000ea, which is just over 2 years old. For the last week I've frequently had a lot of trouble booting up, it seems like the hard drive isn't being recognised. I get a message saying that there's no boot device detected, and when I try to do a hard drive self test I get a "Hard Disk Not Exist" error message. At one of these two error message points I also get an error code of (3F0).
Now, I have tried taking the hard drive out of the laptop, reseating the connections both on the back of the hard drive and on the motherboard, and booting up while the hard drive is laying flat in the palm of my hand. I can feel it spin up fine, it doesn't seem to make any clicking noises like a dying hard drive might, I can even hear it reading the hard drive very briefly once or twice - but I'm still being told the hard drive doesn't exist! On boot up, the "hard disk access" LED on the laptop comes on solid for a few seconds, then goes off, and then maybe flickers on and off briefly once or twice (all while on the HP splash screen) before giving me the error. I should possibly also mention that the label on top of the hard drive looks a bit scorched, I presume that's from the heat generated from the wifi card situated beneath it.
So the short of it is, this is happening almost every time i try to boot up my laptop now. Sometimes I have to try booting up 10-15 times, but so far it has eventually always recognised the hard drive and booted up and worked perfectly fine with no issues in operation. I just feel that at this stage it's likely that someday the laptop isn't going to boot up at all.
I'm happy to replace the hard drive if that's going to sort the problem, but since it spins up fine every time with no clicking noises whether the laptop recognises it or not, I wonder if that's really what the problem is. Could it be a faulty cable between the drive and mobo? Could it be a problem on the mobo itself?
    Would greatly appreciate any assistance!
    Thanks in advance!
    johoro

Think horses not zebras. Not every hard drive error results in clicking. You likely have an issue with the electronic circuitry of the drive, not the mechanical parts, i.e. seek head or platters. A replacement green board would likely fix it but it is much easier to find a new hard drive. Am I 100% sure? No but I am 92% sure.

  • NEED HELP, old hard disk failed, new hard disk not detected.

My hard disk died, not working, not detected when I restart with the MacOS X DVD and attempt to reinstall.
I have bought a new hard drive, 160 GB ATA - IDE Samsung drive, and carefully replaced it following service manual instructions. All connectors have been carfully but firmly reconnected, and the new hard disk is not detected.
What can i do?? where is the problem??
Thank you very much for your help.

Do you know that the new hard drive is working? As it's new chances are it is, just asking .... do you know it's powering up? If you replug the old not working hard drive in, is it recognized? (this is where you don't put the computer back together, but just replace the hard drive and sort of close it back up, but don't use any bolts close the case). Plus you can feel or clearly hear if the drive is starting up or not.
