Recurrent maintenance mystery
Hi everyone,
I have a recurring problem (although it might be more than one problem) and I'm really asking for advice here.
The problem is that every few weeks, my G5 starts behaving strangely and I have to run disk repair from my Tiger install DVD to fix it.
While this isn't catastrophic, I'd love to know what's causing the problem(s) and zap it forever. The cause, whatever it is, only affects my user account. I've already binned one user account and started afresh but it only got me a few months of peace.
So - does anyone know how I can identify and fix the culprit?
Symptoms = various, but for example Finder will misbehave (can't display contents of Applications folder, Utilities folder etc) or will simply hang on start up (within 20 - 30 seconds) and will be "not responding". Another example = Activity Monitor entirely fails to launch. Spotlight, too. As you can see, these things usually occur when I'm already trying to fix slow running or suspect something bad may be happening.
My usual line of attack = launch Disk Utility and run repair disk permissions. Sometimes this helps. Last week, the list of permissions needing to be fixed seemed ridiculously long (at least 5 minutes of scrolling page instead of just a handful of lines).
Suspecting permissions may have something to do with all this, I often trash the relevant plist but sometimes this doesn't help, either (eg with the hanging Finder).
The point I always get to is that I run Verify Disk from Disk Utility and get a report that the volume bitmap needs minor repair - which I do from the install DVD and everything's fine... for a few weeks, when it starts grumbling again.
As noted, other user accounts don't seem to be affected. So it's in 'my' permissions, right?? What should I be looking for? Or have I got a bunch of different, unrelated problems?
One other note (thanks for reading this far!): I try to save power as much as possible, so nearly always put it to sleep at night. I use MacJanitor to make sure the maintenance scripts get an airing, probably every other day or so. I probably run the 'weekly' tasks more than once a week. Am I messing it up??
Any help gratefully received.

He ain't the only one either. On two occassions I have had my system barf a startup and dump me to the Darwin login prompt. Logins using valid admin user credentials fail. In the first case my system became totally unbootable and seemingly unfixable even after booting from DVD Disk utility could not repair the partition and I wound up backing up my data and reinstalling a clean fresh installation of OSX. On the second occassion my Carbon Copy Clone Backup recovered most of the lost data and fixed the system. Given that I purchased the MacBook Pro 17 in early June I'm not at all impressed by the stability and reliability of OSX. I've come from the Windows world and have not experienced such problems since beta testing Win95, leading me to my less than delighted stance. This is not about win vs OSX though.
One thing I do know that has caused permissions corruption and have verified this problem with other users and multiple versions is the Flash installer. I have replicated permissions corruption and found disk boot failure occurred within a few hours and a restart or 2 of installing Flash 8 or the latest universal binaries release. I contacted Adobe support who said this was not a report they had received previously. I have in my possesion though an email from a user received the he received from Adobe on June 18 stating the same thing in response to the same issue reported on a Mac Mini. I sent email to adobe detailing test cases logs results and email from other users. I sent the message to apple support as well. Adobe support does not respond and Apple quite rightly point out its Adobes problem.
This info may well not solve peoples problems here, but make sure you verify and or repair permissions often! Also backup often! Its ironic that throughout all this my Bootcamp / XP system has run flawlessly. It's interesting that in most cases so far MacDrive6 hangs XP when the permissions and or volume is corrupt and seems to be a good indicator that all is not well in OSX land. Thus far evidence does NOT support the theory that MacDrive is causing the corruption.

Where are the regular maintenance updates?
Most expensive/professional software I own licences for
receives maintenance updates and bug fix patches on a regular
basis. Even with shareware and freeware, the patches and updates
just keep coming. Flash Professional should certainly be no
different, there's more than enough bugs to warrant some fixing.
But what did we get? Nothing! Some measly updates for the Flash
player, that's all. Clearly Adobe/Macromedia cannot be trusted in
this department, they just move on to the next project and leave
users to wrestle with bugs.
A few examples off the top of my head:
- The new smoothing algorithm introduced in Flash 8 is
kaputt. It blurs bitmaps even when they're shown in 1:1 scale,
anti-aliasing intentionally aliased stuff. Clearly there's some
rounding error or something messing with the scale of things. For
example, I used Flash 7 to make document and application icons in
128x128. They fit exactly to the pixel grid and when I exported
them from Flash 7 they were sharp as can be. When I export the same
icons to PNG from Flash 8 at 128x128, using the same source files,
the edges are suddenly blurred. With some trial and error I
discovered that I had to export them in 129x129 in order to make
them look as they did from Flash 7, then crop the picture in
Fireworks to 128x128.
- "Convert Lines to Fills" is a mess. It generates a
completely warped rendition of the selected lines if they overlap.
You have to walk Flash through the process by selecting a few lines
well away from eachother, move them away from the rest, convert to
fills, then repeat this process until you finally get a WYSIWYG
rendition of the lines you wanted to convert.
- Various UI graphics bugs. For example if you drag-select
across a number of layers and frames in the timeline and insert or
delete, leftovers from the black selection rectangle are still
visible in the timeline. You have to minimize/maximize the window
to make it redraw correctly.
- If I enter W/H/X/Y coordinates for an object, say "10.0",
it's because I want exactly 10.0. I don't want Flash to arbitrarily
change it sometimes to 10.1 or 9.9. Sometimes you have to enter it
twice to make it stick.
- Flash 'forgets' parts of audio files in the library. I
import a lot of WAV files to the library, and sometimes a few saves
down the line I discover there are mysterious silent gaps in the
audio. I have to re-import the files again to fill these gaps.
- FlashPaper (it installed correctly on very few computers,
you had to fix it in a DOS prompt, or FlashPaper would just hang
when you try to print). I've also had complaints that my FlashPaper
rendered PDF:s won't open in Mac OS X.
These are just a handful of examples I can think of at the
moment, I know I've stumbled upon dozens more and I'm sure there's
a collective pool of thousands. What I want to know is why
Adobe/Macromedia feels it's OK to not bother with maintenance
updates and fixes for a product of this price and magnitude? It's a
despicable business practice I would expect from shady vaporware
peddlers. It's only your perspective that "nobody seems to care" that
couldn't be anymore incorrect - I see it
first hand how dedicated and caring the developers of flash
are.
I wont get into a platform war either - but i clearly
remember the MS promotion MS was using
claiming the new "Innovative" features of IE7 - specifically
showcases their new tabbed browsing
feature and popup stopper - FF had that long before them -
hardly innovative.
Vista looks and acts very much like Mac OS - at least on the
surface. It's so blaringly obvious to
me that they must have been studying OSX when they were
deisigning Vista.
Anyway - i dont really care about OS - and your points are
totally valid - I'm a PC user only
because flash always runs better on PC then MAC.
I just think your claims that nobody cares and complacency
within Adobe are ill-founded - I am very
much closer to the people that you are talking about and see
their dedication first hand for years -
unless you are as close or closer, it's hard for me to agree.
But if you feel this way from a users POV - then perhaps
something is wrong on a marketing level or
some other area. Flash 8 was developed by Macromedia - the
next version of flash will be developed
by Adobe - let's hold of on judging them until they come out
with the next version - until then,
complaints of non caring and complacency simply hold no
weight.

I know that I complain about Dreamweaver a lot. But, that is
because there are a lot of things to complain about Dreamweaver. I
know a lot of programmers love it and it's probably a great tool
for writing scripts etc. but for site maintenance I find it very
weak to the point of being pathetic (and job threatening).
One of my clients has a site that is quite large -with
approximately 2,300 items to keep track of (pages, images, etc.).
Dreamweaver has not been able to sufficiently manage the site well.
It constantly loses track of page links, and just this morning I
discovered that Library Assets on several pages have mysteriously
become unlinked. But the kicker is, if I make an update to the
Asset, Dreamweaver ACTS like it is making the updates to all of
those pages - but it isn't. That kind of poor linking and dropping
page information is unacceptable. Other coding issues have
periodically popped up as well - Drop Menus for some reason stop
working and must be replaced even tho nothing has been done to
them. They just stop working.
And again, Dreamweaver is terrible at uploading updated files
to the server. It often skips pages and images that have just been
updated - causing me to have to manually triple check each file to
make sure it was uploaded. Not a real confidence building piece of
software.
Those are just the most recent developments in Dreamweaver's
poor site management. I've been on Dreamweaver seriously for a year
now and frankly I have not been impressed by it's performance at
all.
The program interface also doesn't add any ease of use to the
work flow either. The Windows "explorer" navigation is terrible and
I swear they must have used the same rendering engine that Internet
Explorer 6 uses because they look exactly the same - terrible.
Thanks for promoting such a crippling application Adobe.
On the bright side now I know how all of those Microsoft IT
professionals feel about job security due to terrible software that
they support."Damn the torpedos" <[email protected]>

The problems you list certainly sound like showstoppers. All
I can say
is that I have never encountered them, but I don't maintain
such large
sites, so that might explain the difference. Getting things
off your
chest here undoubtedly helps you let off steam, but it
doesn't get the
message to where it really matters: the development team. If
you come
across serious issues that affect your workflow, file
detailed bug
reports through the feature request/bug report form:

Rather than pile all your complaints into one submission,
focus on one
issue at a time, and give detailed steps of how to reproduce
specific
problems.

Is there some more info I could read about this mystery?
Ive heard you need to let your mac on for a night and osx will do maintenance by itself. Pretty cool but what does it do exactly? And how can I monitor this process?

Hiding a Maintenance View in a View Cluster
Hello ABAP Experts,
We have a scenario where we would like to hide a maintenance view to an existing view cluster based on condition.
Is it possible via events of a view cluster, where i can hide the view at runtime based on some condition before the view cluster is displayed ?
Is there any way as well, which help achieve this hiding of views ?
For example in the below View Cluster, i would like to hide "Define object links" view from the main view cluster "Define document Types".
Thanks,
NareshHi Naresh,
Yes, you can do it in events of a view cluster, define a subroutine and bounding it to event(02) in SE54,
when you define the subroutine, it will ask you creat a mian program, in this main program, you need 'INCLUDE lsvcmcod'.
Then you can access some standard data, http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/62/c302c7de8e11d1a5960000e82deaaa/frameset.htm
INCLUDE lsvcmcod.
FORM yourSubroutineName.
DATA: viewname TYPE vclstruc-object,
error_flag TYPE vcl_flag_type,
viewname = 'ZTEST_VIEW1'.
* PERFORM vcl_set_table_access_for_obj USING viewname
* CHANGING error_flag.
----> according your condition to change the view.
IF xxx = yyy.
DELETE vcl_struc_tab WHERE object = viewname.
ENDIF.
ENDFORM.

I have recently uncovered mysterious cellular usage on three different iPhones. I am a Verizon customer and discovered this by examining the cellular data use logs. What I found are a long series of mysterious data usage logs. I have visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store 3 times now to log notes and discuss the issue. It is being escalated.
The characterstics are as follows:
All my family phones have the appropriate IOS and hardware updates (verified by the GeniusBar at my local Apple Store).
This is occuring across three phones, which happen to all be iphone 5. Two are 5 and the other a new 5s. We do have one iphone 4 in the family but the issue (so far as I can tell), is not happening on it.
One iphone 5 has IOS 7, the other IOS 6. The new 5s has of course IOS 7.
Mysterious data use happens even while connected to wifi.
Each mysterious data use log entry is exactly 6 hours apart. For example: 2:18 AM, 8:18 AM, 2:18 PM, 8:18 PM, 2:18 AM ... etc. It cycles AM and PM, same times, for a day to many days until some condition causes it to change (evolve).
The times evolve. One day it could be cycling through at one time series, then it changes to another time sequence and continues until the next condition.
The data usage is anywhere from a few K to many MB. The largest I've seen is over 100 MB.
The logs clearly show these usages are not due to human interaction. It is a program.
If cellular connection is used frequently (by the owner), the pattern is hard to pick out. Luckily, my family member is very good about only using wifi whenever possible, so these mysterious use patterns are easy to pick out.
Verizon allows access to 90 days worth of data logs, so I downloaded and analyzed them. This has been happening for at least 90 days. I have found 298 instances of mysterious use out of 500 total connections to cellular. A total of 3.5 GB of mysterious cellular data has been recorded as used in that 90 days by this phone alone. Only .6 GB of the total cellular data use is legitimate, meaning by the person.
This issue is occuring across three different phones. Two are iPhone 5, and the third is a recently purchased iPhone 5s. The 5s I have not touched beyone the basic startup. I have left it alone on a desk for 3 days, and looking at the logs, the mysterious data use in the same pattern is occuring.
So ... I am speaking to both sides, Verizon and Apple to get answers. Verizon puts their wall up at data usage. It doesn't matter how it is being used, you simply need to pay for it. Yes, the evidence I have gathered is getting closer to someting on Verizon's end.
Before pressing in that direction, I am hoping someone reading this may recognize this issue as a possible iPhone 5 issue ... OR ... you, right now, go look at your data usage logs available through your carrier's web account, and see if you can pick out a pattern of mysterious use. Look especially at the early morning instances when you are most likely sleeping.
I am hoping this is a simple issue that has a quick resolution. I'm looking for the "ooohhh, I see that now ..." But I am starting to think this might be much bigger, but the fact is, most customers rarely or never look at their data usage details, much less discover mysterious use patterns.
The final interesting (maybe frightening part) thing about all this is that I discovered while talking to Verizon ... they do not divulge which direction the data is going. This goes for any use, mysterious or legitimate. Is cellular data coming to your phone, or leaving it? Is something pulling data from your phone? We know that it is possible to build malware apps, but the catch with my issue is that it is also happening on a brand new iphone 5s with nothing downloaded to it.
Thanks for your timeThanks for the replies. It took a while not hearing anything so thought I was alone. I have done many of the suggestions already. The key here is that it occurs on both phones with apps, and phones still packaged in a box.
A Genius Bar supervisor also checked his Verizon data usage log and found the same 6 hour incremental use. Suprisingly, he did not express much intrigue over that. Maybe he did, but did not show it.
I think the 6 hour incremental usage is the main issue here. I spoke with Verizon (again) and they confirmed that all they do is log exactly when the phone connected to the tower and used data. The time it records is when the usage started. I also found out that the time recorded is GMT.
What is using data, unsolicited, every 6 hours?
Why does it change?
Why does it only happen on the iPhone 5 series and not the 4?
Since no one from Apple seems to be chiming in on this, and I have not received the promised calls from Apple tech support that the Genius Bar staff said I was suppose to receive, it is starting to feel like something is being swept under the rug.
I woke up the other day with another thought ... What application would use such large amounts of data? Well ... music, video, sound and pictures of course. Well ... what would someone set automatically that is of any use to them? hmmm ... video, pictures, sound. Is the iPhone 5 succeptible to snooping? Can an app be buried in the IOS that automatically turns on video and sound recording, and send it somewhere ... every 6 hours? Chilling. I noted that the smallest data usage is during the night when nothing is going on, then it peaks during the day. The Genius Bar tech and I looked at each other when I drew this sine wave graph on the log print outs during an appointment ... -
Possibility to edit datasets, when there is already a maintenance view?
Hello again,
is it right that I can modify datasets even when there exists a generated maintenance view for the table?
It was usual for me, that in the transaction SE16 don't allow that.
Thank you for your answers!
MelanieDepends on the setting for "delivery and maintenance" in SE11, should be set to "allowed with restrictions" for the underlying tables of the view. Also check the very good F1 help for this field.

Can I use classes and methods for a maintenance view events?
Hello experts,
Instead of perform/form, can I instead use classes and methods, etc for a given maintenance view event, lets say for example I want to use event '01' which is before saving records in the database. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot guys!Hi viraylab,
1. The architecture provided by maintenance view
for using EVENTS and our own code inside it -
It is provided using FORM/PERFORM
concept only.
2. At this stage,we cannot use classes.
3. However, inside the FORM routine,
we can write what ever we want.
We can aswell use any abap code, including
classes and methods.
(But this classes and methods won't have any
effect on the EVENT provided by maintenance view)

How to create a variant to a maintenance view (trans: SM31)
Hi gurus.
I have created a maintenance view (called z_jest). By running it from SM31 there is a variant option. However, I am not able to create the variant which I want to filter a selection upon in this transaction.
I have even looked into transaction SE54 and created a variant for the maintenance table view there( called z_jestv). Then going back to transaction SM31 and view z_jest, i push 'Variant' radiobutton and type as variant: 'z_jestv', I only get the message: "Variant z_jestv for object z_jest does not exist".
Can anybody please advice on how to create and/or connect the variant to the maintenance view?
Regards LL.Hi Mahalakshmi
Thanks for reply.
When I look into the procedure, there is a prerequisite: "The basis dialog for which the maintenance variant is created already exists."
I am a little bit unsertain if I miss this 'Basic dialog'. Can you please advice on how to check / create this 'basic dialog' before I go on to create the variant. (I need this 'basic dialog' as input in the procedure you sent.)
(Note: I have already created a 'maintenance dialog' for the view, but I have a feeling, that is something different...) -

Using DYNP_VALUES_UPDATE with a Maintenance View
Hi,
I am using a maintenance view to insert values into a table. When user creates a new entry, based on the value provided for a field,I need to fill a read-only field. In PAI, when user enters a value for one field, I am using FM 'DYNP_GET_STEPL' to get the current line and then DYNP_VALUES_UPDATE to fill the contents to the read-only field. But this does not seem to work. Any idea?
Regards
RachanaHi Tamas,
I tried both the options suggested by you.
I am updating the underlying structure, still its not visible when the screen loads again. But if you see the same field gets filled with DYNP_VALUES_UPDATE if an F4 help is used for teh first(editable) field and then my read-only field is also filled in the PROCESS ON VALUE REQUEST module.
So my guess is that, since it is a table control, it loops through the rest of the table control which is empty and my underlying structure gets cleared. So the problem could be where I am actually filling the field.
Is it possible to somehow fill the <EXTRACT> table so that teh value is not lost?

Read Only access for a Maintenance view
Hi All,

There is a Z Maintenance View (namely ZVHR_GRD_TARGET), for this i have to maintain the status as Read Only, and have to create a transaction code for this view with only SE16 access.
I am doing like this.
In the Z view, in the tab "Maint. Status", i have selected the radio button "Read Only" and saved it.
I have created a transaction code for this view with SE16 access with the inputs
Transaction SE16
Selected the check box "Skip Intial Screen"
Selected the check box for GUI status
Name of the Screenfield DATABROWSE-TABLENAME
value ZVHR_GRD_TARGET (i.e, view name)
But the transaction code is not executing.
So can any help me out in the requirement

Validating records into a maintenance view
Hi folks!
I have a simple Z table (say ZTABLE) and a Z view based on it with some related description (say ZVIEW). The ZTABLE has a DEC field (called COEF) with 2 decimals and it should have only numbers between 0 and 1.
I set the valid interval from 0 to 1 but, as help says, it's only checked for CHAR, NUMC, DEC, INT1, INT2 and INT4 data types. Not for DEC.
Then I use an event on ZVIEW. On SE11 I went to "Table maintenance generator" - Environment - Modification - Events. So there I put the 05 event (Creating a new entry) and I programed the check. It works fine for new entries, but if you have a record on table and you want to change the COEF field you can put there any number, even outside the 0-1 range.
I tried with the 01 event (Before saving the data in the database) but it seams to be called only for last record.
Could anybody tell me what can I do?
Thanks!Hi,
Since it is a Z TABLE..
You can directly modify the flow logic in SE51.
Go to SE51
Give the program name - SAPL + Function group name
Screen number
