Recurrent near-freeze every week

For months now, I've been experiencing a troubling near-freeze once a week. It occurs every Friday between 2 and 2:30 PM ET and lasts about 30 minutes. During that freeze, I lose all control of the iMac. At the time, I am running Safari 4.0.5, Mail, and an old version of Filemaker Pro (except for FMP, everything on this iMac is current versions, and the freeze happens when FMP is not running so we can eliminate that as a cause).
Typically, I can't quit any running program, can't launch any program (including Activity Monitor, which makes it difficult to know what's happening), and can't even force quit anything -- the iMac just fails to respond. I don't hear any drive access going on (though that's sometimes hard for me to hear anyway). After roughly a half hour, the computer will start to respond again and all programs work normally. (On a few occasions, when I wasn't home in the afternoon and the computer was on but not running any apps, I think the same thing happened, but when I came home a couple of hours later, I found the Mac had crashed and there was a crash notice bouncing around the screen that required a restart; I'm not positive these are related, but they probably are.)
I don't have anything weird on this computer. It took me quite a while to figure out that this near-freeze was happening on a very regular schedule. I thought it might have been a Sotlight (okay...that was an accidental typo, but I think Sotlight fits pretty well so I'll leave it) index update procedure, so I stayed up late one night to run that update and reset the schedule, but it hasn't had any effect on the freezing.
Can anybody suggest anything else I should look at, or any other way to determine what might be causing this?

After weeks of additional testing, I seem to be no closer to finding the solution to this recurring problem. To recap: every Tuesday at around 6:30 PM ET and every Friday at 2:05 PM ET, my Mac goes into hibernation. I can move windows around, but any attempt to do anything else or to quit any of the programs results in the spinning beach ball. Eventually -- and I mean after 5 to 10 minutes -- the Mac might respond, or might not. But between 30 and 45 minutes after the freeze occurs, the Mac will suddenly return to normal.
I've run Activity Monitor, launching it (and quitting all other programs) about 5 minutes before I know the shutdown will occur. The only items reported to be using any CPU time are: pmTool, virusbarriers (2 of them?), virusbarrierd, mds, SystemUIServer, Window Server, kernel_task and QuicKeys, and none of them appear unusually active. But when I try to quit Activity Monitor, the spinning beachball appears and the program will not quit.
I tried console. Here's what it reports, starting about 15 minutes before the freeze:

Can anyone shed any helpful light on what's causing these "scheduled" freezes?

  • Mac Mini near-freezes

    Hi,
I am puzzled by a Mac Mini, which has the following configuration:
    - Mac Mini 2,1
    - Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz
    - 2 Go RAM
    - 111.47 Go HD
    - Boot ROM version MM21.009A.B00
    - SMC Version 1.19f2
    - Mac OS X 10.5.8.
This machine used to run smoothly until recently, when it began to near-freeze - i.e. slow down dramatically - on occasions.
I eventually carried out a clean re-install from the start-up CD, excluding a couple of usual suspects, such as the Logitech Control Centre.
The Mac Mini has been running fine for no more than 2 weeks. Today, it near-froze again! Fortunately, I managed to launch the Activity Monitor in order to figure out whether any operation was overloading the machine. The bad news is that nothing seems wrong at first glance:
    - 5.5% processor load
    - 0.8 Go free RAM, out of 2 Go
    - 87.8 Go free HD capacity, out of 111.5 Go.
Going forward, what should I be investigating?
    Thanks for your advice.

I have the same issue. I have basically pin pointed that the issue happens when there is moderate to heavy hard drive activity. For instance if I am installing a program in the background I get 5-10 second lockups/freezes every 20 seconds or so.
    My specs:

SMART Disk utility reports no errors on the disk, I also ran a test which reported no errors. Others have reported that the issue may be related to the Spotlight performing indexing while new files are being written to the hard disk which could be related because from what I can tell smaller file writes are definitely causing more lockups than larger ones.
When the issue occurs CPU and Memory utilisation is not high.

  • My macbook pro freezes every few seconds

    Hi everyone!
About a week ago my MBP started freezing every few seconds showing the well known spinning beach balls every time, even when running no apps, I've sepnt plenty of time looking for a solution, I've read this problem might be due to a physically damaged hard drive, bt I've tested it several times using different apps and it shows no error, I've read from another discussion about Etrecheck as a useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem, so I hope some of you guys can help me checking the log output. Hi guys,
My MacBook Pro 15" Late 2013 Retina freeze every hour at the very same time. Before every freeze in console i see something like this:

I have 512GB SSD Drive which has 2 partitions. One for Mac OS X 10.9.4 (13E28) one for Windows 8 (which I'm not using) also I have Parallel Desktop App which I use once a month. Also I'm using TimeMachine + external HDD (do backups once in 2 weeks).
Everything was ok for 4 month. A month ago I've start experiencing freezes 1-2 a day and now it became worse, every hour. I've try to repair disk permissions, repair disk. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
I read in one of the website that some people fixed this issue updating ssd firmware. But I'm not sure where to get firmware for my ssd.

    Sorry I missed that.
This is what I think is happening:

There are two options, keep the Time Machine HDD connected full time or turn Time Machine off and on only when you want to make the backup.
    Ciao.

  • I believe OS 10.10.2 is causing my mac to freeze every few seconds.

For the last two weeks or so, my MacBook Pro (2011) has been freezing every few seconds. I can barley type this now. When I pull up Activity Monitor, it shows my memory running at 3.0+ out of 4 GB's. I've tried everything I could think of. My Mac is more of a internet surfing comp so I didn't mind reinstalling OS. It worked great for about 30 minutes then everything started to freeze again. Im curious if anyone else is having this issue and if anyone's figured out how to fix it. I ran a diagnostic on my ram and thats not the issue. Im to the point of upgrading my ram but i think it's dumb reverting to that when the 4 GB has been plenty for me in the past.
    Thank You.

  • DreamWeaver CC keeps freezing every 30 seconds

I'm using DreamWeaver CC on a pretty new computer (1 week old). Up until tonight, everything has been working well. Then, suddenly, DreamWeaver began freezing every 30 to 60 seconds. It will freeze, mouse still works and other programs still run smooth, but DreamWeaver will halt whatever text I'm in the middle of typing. Sometimes the text cursor will disappear. Sometimes the title bar will say "Nor Responding", and sometimes the Windows blue spinning ball will appear whenever DreamWeaver is in focus.
The computer has two SATA3 SSD hard drives (Windows 7 Ultimate and DreamWeaver CC installed to one drive and the files I'm working on exist on the other SSD). The computer has Intel i7 3.5GHz with 32GB RAM. I have task manager running while using DreamWeaver, the CPU usage never goes above 10% and the RAM usage is never above 4GB, so there are clearly tons of resources still available. Only have about 10 tabs open in DreamWeaver.
Again, have been using DreamWeaver just fine for a week, this problem just started around 9pm Pacific Time on Saturday, November 1, 2014. Is there an update that CC would've automatically downloaded which is buggy? Anyone else having these issues?
It is unbearable to work like this, as every couple words I type, the program freezes for about 15 to 20 seconds and then comes back to life. No other program that I'm using does this, so it's not a computer issue. The issue is isolated within DreamWeaver CC.
Working with local files only, not over internet or network.
Please help - having a hard time using this program. By the way, using the trial version - so far, not convinced that I should pay for a subscription based software that prevents me from getting work done.

No new programs installed, those aren't the issue.
I found the problem. Posting solution for anyone who may experience the same issue.
Timed this out, and the duration between freezes varied and seemed to be based more on the input rather than time (anywhere from 40 seconds to a couple minutes). The duration of the freeze was always exactly 20 seconds, when the blue mouse icon would spin, input would not be accepted in DW and the program would fade to white.
I then noticed that only one file was having the issue. I thought maybe it was a corrupt file, so I tried copying it over to a new file, that didn't fix it.
    Then I found the solution:
In my script tags and stylesheet tags, the url was "//urlhere.com" instead of "https:// urlhere.com"  (added space so that it wasn't automatically recognized on this forum as a URL.) Once I specified the protocol in front of "//", it fixed it. Although I don't fully know the reason, I'm guessing that without the protocol specified, DW is seeking these files locally and freezing when it can't locate it.

  • I have a MacBook Air mid 2012 11" that keeps freezing every time I use it

    Hi Everyone
I have a MacBook Air mid 2012 11" that keeps freezing every time I use it
    It's running a i7 2ghz with 8gb ram And OS X 10.8.4
I have had the Air around 11 months and the last week is the first time it has ever frozen , now it will do it after about 15 min use
It seems a little warmer than usual and it will freeze no matter what is running , or just idle .
And just to add , no google chrome installed

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

How do I unsubscribe from subscription VIP in the game StarMaker? every week, I removed 66 rubles, while I'm there not even sit, and how do I unsubscribe don't know, please help

Contact the maker of the app. Apple has nothing to do with subscriptions to third party apps.

  • I generally back up and restore my iphone every week... and this time i backed it up..and i can see that backup time and file size.. now.. when i try to restore my iphone.. i select the back up and now it is taking forever to restore. help me

i generally back up and restore my phone every week.. just that i dont have any problem with the network issues. !!
today at 00:46 1st june.. i backed up my iphone and it was perfect...
when i try to restore it.. it is taking 15+ hours .. and that time stays like that for almost 3 hours...  it does not happen.
i even called the apple help center. and they said me to install as a new device... and when i said what wil happen to my messages.. they say .. they wont stay.. and wil be deleted.. and all my apps i need to download again..
but earlier i din need to do any of it.!!! it worked really fine .!!!
please help me..!!! i got some important details in this back up.... please help me.!!!

Once in a while the restore process seems to mess up.  What I don't understand is why you would perform a weekly restore.
At any rate, if you must restore, perform a device reset (settings>general>reset) and then you will have the opportunity to restore from iCloud.  Restore a device whenever it no longer works correctly, not just as a matter of maintenance.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

None if these crash reports seem to have been send.
Do you have crash reports with a "bp-" prefix that were submitted and that show a crashing thread?
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

You can use one of these to start Firefox in <u>Safe mode</u>:
*On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
*On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox

  • Crystal Reports freezes every time I try to open a report.

Crystal Reports freezes every time I try to open a report. I feel like it has something to do with trying to locate the default printer, but Im not certain. Crystal Reports opens just fine, but the moment I try to open any report it just hangs. Please help!

My problem is very similar to this person's. I have 2 laptops with CR XI installed (same problem from original R2 through SP 5).  The old laptop is an IBM Thinkpad R51. The new one is an HP Elitebook 6930p. Both have the exact same software and versions of Win XP and network security.
If I try to open a report that has an "invalid printer" selected, it will open in the old IBM (with the message, 'This report uses an invalid printer. The default printer will be used instead'), but on the new HP, it freezes and I have to do a CtlAltDel to get out.
I've tried everything Don Williams suggested, but the only thing that is logged in Admin Tools when this happens is a Security/Privilege Request" with no errors.
Clearly, when CR in the HP looks for the printer selected in the report and doesn't find it, that causes CR to freeze.
Any idea what difference between the 2 machines could cause this?
This is a royal pain, because I can only be on one computer at a time.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Entourage User Account Diables Itself Every Week or So

Running Mail Service on Apple OS X server package 10.4.4 (problem also was on 10.4.3) we have two customers whose log in account becomes disabled every week or so, as though they had made too many erroneous attempts to log in. We reset their account, and they're good to connect for a few more days, then they contact us to say they can't log in, we check the workgroup manager and, sure enough, the log in permission has disabled itself.
Anyone else seeing this? They are also Mac users, too. They thought they "needed" the features of Entourage. No other email customers using this mail server are complaining at all, although probably no others are using Microsoft Entourage.
We're pretty suspicious this is an issue between Microsoft Entourage and the Open Directory. Occasionally we see one of these users logged in twice at the same time on the server connected users monitor screen.

Here is the error I get, if it helps.

  • I don't understandwhy i need to buy a new charger cable for my iphone 5 every week. why can't you make a normal cable, that doesn't stop working? i csn't spend so much money on buying new cablesall the time.

these cable are so delicate that after one week of use they break down. i can't spend all my money on buying them. moreover, last week it broke down on saturday eve so i was stuck untill tuseday without a phone.
i have to say that this compan is so rude, and it took me like an hour to sign in and write this complain, and i'm not even sure if it's the right place to wright this sort of things.
apple's customer service is the wort customer service in the world.

I don't understand why you need to buy a new one every week. I've had my iPhnoe 5 for almost a year, never had a problem with the cable. In addition, your phone is can't be more than a year old. Therefore, unless you're damaging them, your cable is under warranty and Apple will replace it. Perhaps you should have tried actually availing yourself of Apple's customer service before complaining about it.
    Best of luck.

  • Firefox freezes every few minutes for a few seconds.

Firefox keeps freezing every few minutes, for a few seconds at a time. It's infuriating. It just happened right now while I was typing "infuriating". It's happened since I installed the Facebook Video Chat Plug-In, but I uninstalled that and it keeps happening.

Probably an over active security or "cleaning" program that's kicking in every few minutes and messing with Firefox.

  • My apple ipod classic 80gb says there is no music - anything on my ipod, but says it only has 37gb free. Then i try and plug it into my pc with iTunes on (i've set it to do not automatically sync devices) but it still freezes every time. can't restore.

my apple ipod classic 80gb says there is no music - anything on my ipod, but says it only has 37gb free. Then i try and plug it into my pc with iTunes on (i've set it to do not automatically sync devices) but it still freezes every time. the only way to unfreeze it is by detatching the ipod or resetting with menu/centre (until it loads up again, where it immediately unfreezes and comes up with a load of messages saying "cannot read iPod" and when i try and restore it by pressing menu/centre button while it's plugged in, it says "cannot restore as it is being used by another program" or "error 1415". Any ideas how to sort this out? hope i haven't majorly screwed it up. thanks.

Sorted it out. If anyone has this problem i reccommend visiting http://forums.ilounge.com/ipod-classic-ipod-5g-video/237546-ipod-classic-80gb-fr eezes-itunes-need-restore-plz-help-2.html#post1403546 there's some pretty good advice on it. have to go into control panel and re-format iPod into NTFS file. good luck.
