Recurring images in INDESIGN document

I am trying to find a way to make my workflow easier. I publish a weekly newsletter which will have a standard format and recurring chart images each week.  In order to avoid, inserting the same images ( which update with new data each week) each week, is there a way to set up the INDESIGN document so that it references the same image file on my hard drive which will get updated by me outside of the INDESIGN program?
This so that all I have to do is update the text portion of my newsletter. Thanks for your help.

If you want the updated image to be linked into the document, you need to save it in the same place as the old image, with the same name, so the link recognizes it. The link will display the out-of-date warning in InDesign's Links panel, because the datestamp has changed, of course. Update the link(s) to refresh the image(s) with the latest revised versions.
Try to set up a directory structure for your publication such that you can revise the graphics in one location and copy them to the location and name that's linked to the publication.
There may be some existing scripts that can save the current issue to a new name and perform link updates. Ask on the InDesign scripting forum.

  • [InDesign CS3] Unable to place PICT image on InDesign document.

    Hi all,
    I am trying to place a PICT type image on InDesign CS3 document but it is being shown disabled in open dialog. And when I drag this image(PICT type) to InDesign document, I am getting an error message "Quick Time and a TIFF (uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture".
    Note: This problem is coming on both MAC and Windows.
    Thanks in anticipation

    When you place content from InDesign, why are you exporting it as JPG?
    You can either
    save the INDD file and place it directly into InDesign or
    export the INDD as PDF/X-4 and place it into InDesign.
    This should result in better quality than using JPGs which will be always a loss of crispyness, change of colors, blurry text and loss of quality.

  • Is there any way to get the height/width of an image before importing it in the indesign document.

    Hi All,
    I need to obtain an image's attributes such as dimensions (height, width in pixels) without placing image in indesign document.
    I have full path of the image (say abc.jpg is stored at c:\my pic\abc.jpg).
    I have obtained the IDFile for this image, tried getting size using GetFileSize() which correctly return size in bytes.
    Is there any way to get the height/width of image without importing it in the indesign document.
    Please, give me some hints. I have spent quite a lot time digging in CHM. I have searched in FileUtils, IDFile API's but found no method which serves this purpose.
    At this point I am clueless where to search next.
    Any help will be appriciated.
    Just a point to mention, I am able to get image height and width for an image in indesign doc though Its not my requirement.
    Thnx,
    D.

    You might be able to examine the contents of the PlaceGun after calling kImportAndLoadPlaceGunCmdBoss without actually placing the image in a document. Not sure, but would be worth looking at.
    Otherwise you will probably have to write platform specific code, ideally with a generic platform-independant wrapper (see SDKSamples/paneltreeview/PlatformFileSystemIterator).
    For the Mac, look at CGImageGetWidth() etc., not sure what the best option is for windows.
    Perhaps Quicktime could provide you with a platform independant solution.

  • Why am I having lines/borders appearing around my placed Illustrator images in my Indesign Document?

    After I save my InDesign Document and close it... When I open it back up again. There are borders around all of my Illustrator placed images.
    I can't seem to find out what is causing them or how to get rid of them.
    When I am working on the file with it open they are not there.. it's only after I save, close and reopen.
    What the heck????

    Thanks for asking Will....
    I've gotten so confused with back issues of the file....saved in InDesign CC that I just started over..
    Was simpler to do that than to try to fix the one I was working on.....
    But while I have you trying to help me..
    Could you tell me how to set the document setup for a new document in InDesign CC to inches?
    I tried going into the preferences.... it's not there.. Looked through all of the preferences.. still can't find it.
    The documents I'm working on are 47" x 28" or thereabouts and I am having to go back to InDesign 5.5
    create the document there then open it in InDesign CC to have it the right size.
    Thanks for your help!

  • I want to place an image in my InDesign document that can work with an address like this (\Resources\Thumb) rather than this (C:\Users\JSmith\Desktop\InDesign thumbnail Test\001\Resources\Thumb) is this possible?

    I want to place an image in my InDesign document that can work with an address like this (\Resources\Thumb) rather than this (C:\Users\JSmith\Desktop\InDesign thumbnail Test\001\Resources\Thumb) is this possible? In a nutshell I want to point the link to an image in a directory that uses just part of the address.

    I know this is something you can do in Maya with linked files. I guess InDesign just isn't there yet.
    MW Design -  Yeah I think "Relative paths" is the right term! I want to create a Layout with an image in the center of the page - and then duplicate my folder structure with that file. With that, I want to replace the Linked image file with a diferent image file of the same name. In effect having multiple files of the same layout with different images.  I hope that made sense.

  • Importing Microsoft Word document with images to InDesign CS5

    Hey,
    I'm trying to import a MS Word document that contains inline images to InDesign CS5.
    I tried File->Place with checking "Import Inline Graphics" but unfortunately it imports the document without the images, there are blank regions where the images are suppose to be.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,
    Kathy

    Yes, aligning image on its own paragraph works, I will skip wraping text inside paragraph, this can be done inside InDesign. Here is one part of Internet PDF books I am talking about, both are in Serbian http://issuu.com/bojan_zivkovic/docs/prikazivanje_slika_u_adobe_photoshop_elements - word + indesign, http://www.scribd.com/doc/49583823/Nau%C4%8Dite-Adobe-Photoshop   - indesign only
    Basicaly I am writing tutorials then turn them into PDF books, for now.
    Thank you, I never try to insert image on its own paragraph.

  • Script for replacing Image from a frame into InDesign document file

    Hi All,
    I am having an indesign document (indd) file with images and texts. I am using InDesign Server CS4 to run the scripts via SOAP.
    My requirement is to replace any of the images from the required frame/s of indesign document through scripting (I already have frame id of which image needs to be replaced). I have written written java-script file (as given below): but when I execute this java-script on InDesign Server via SOAP, I get follwoing error into InDesign Server:
    10/03/09 15:15:54 INFO  [javascript] Executing File: \\Server_IP_Address\JavaScript_File_Path\JavaScript_File.js

    Following is the java-script that is being used for replacing image from indd's frame:
    var myDocument = app.open(File('//Server_IP_Address/InDesignDocument_File_Path/Sample.indd'));
    var tmp_frmid="1339"; //frame id of which image needs to be replaced.
    for (var i=0;i<myDocument.pages.length;i++)
    var objPage=myDocument.pages.item(i);
    var objPageitems = objPage.pageItems;
    try
    var obj = objPageitems.itemByID(tmp_frmid);
    obj.images[0].remove;
    obj.appliedObjectStyle = null;
    var myImage=obj.place(File('//Server_IP_Address/Images_to_be_reolaced_Path/ImageFile.jpg'));
    var old_height = myImage.geometricBounds[2] - myImage.geometricBounds[0];
    var new_height = obj.geometricBounds[2] - obj.geometricBounds[0];
    var old_width = myImage.geometricBounds[3] - myImage.geometricBounds[1];
    var new_width = obj.geometricBounds[1] + ((new_height / old_height) * old_width);
    myImage.geometricBounds = [obj.geometricBounds[0] + "mm", obj.geometricBounds[1] + "mm", obj.geometricBounds[2] + "mm", new_width + "mm"];
    var diff = obj.geometricBounds[1] - myImage.geometricBounds[1];
    myImage.move( undefined, [diff,0] );
    break;
    catch(e)
    myDocument.save('//Server_IP_Address/InDesignDocument_File_Path/Sample.indd');
    var previewFile = File('//Server_IP_Address/Images_to_be_reolaced_Path/ImageFile.jpg');
    app.jpegExportPreferences.jpegQuality["JPEGOptionsQuality.low"];
    app.documents.item(0).exportFile(ExportFormat.jpg, previewFile);
    myDocument.close();
    I have very urgent requirement; if anyone have any idea; please suggest me. \
    It would be highly appreciable.

  • When placing an image in InDesign, it appears pixelated.  It is a 66mb file in a 6x9" document.

    I am new to InDesign, as I've been creating all my documents for print in Acrobat as a PDF.  When I am placing an image, it appears pixelated.

    Hi,
    This is an expected behavior, when you place an image in InDesign then it display the preview of the image however you this has no impact on the output unless the image placed is of low-resolution itself.
    In order to have good resolution of images, you may switch to View > Display Performance > High Quality.
    Thanks,

  • Working Backwards - is the image in any Indesign Documents?

    Hi guys
    Here at my place of work IT are continually trying to keep the amount of data on our network as low as possible.
    To do this they produce a large files report and a duplicate files report.
    Using indesign and packaging files as we do, we are quite often culprits of the large files or more often than not duplicate files.
    Because it isn't just us that has access to our images etc we feel we have to package our documents because of the risk of a file being moved or deleted and therefore losing its link to indesign.
    My question is this:  If we have an image, a jpg for example, is there a way of seeing any indesign files that that is linked to?  This way, if we have a large image file, we can see if it is connected to any of our indesign files and then if not, reduce / delete it without the fear of affecting any documents.
    Thanks
    Si

    The other way around, yes, you can find links to InDesign files through
    Bridge. This way, no.

    (InDesign CS5) I have created hundreds of InDesign documents incorporating images stored on an external USB connected drive. I did a manual back-up to another drive at regular intervals but far from ideal.
    I now have a network drive which is properly backed-up. I have copied all of the images and folder structure from the USB connected drive to this new drive.
    My question is how I get all of the links in my indd files to point to the new drive. I am aware how to do it one file at a time, but is there a way of doing the same thing over many files/folders at a time?

    It depends on how you organize your work. If you have one folder for images for a document, relinking one image should alert you that other missing images are in the same folder, but this assumes that images are missing. If the links window sees a clear path to the original location of the images, they aren't missing, so that won't work.
    Another thing to try is to select all of the images in the links window and go to the fly-out menu and select Relink To Folder (navigate to the new folder, and you don't even have to select any images by name).
    If you store your images in many different folders for the same document, you might want to either package the document to copy all of the images into one folder (you can specify to only copy images if you like) or use the fly-out in the links window (Utilities>Copy Links To…) and select or create a new images folder.

  • Automatically place images within multiple InDesign documents

    I work for a publishing company of agricultural trade magazines and work on few titles each month. We are trying to streamline our production procedures and previous company I worked for had a script they used to place images within text pages by searching for the file name, however there were some limitations with this script (it would only work within 1 InDesign document and only within 1 InDesign story at a time). The company I am with now breaks out each editorial story into separate InDesign files and we place image boxes when the display ads are going to go. For our purposes now, I am looking for a script that, once all of the image boxes were tagged with the image file names, could search between multiple InDesign documents in a folder and automatically place all the images for us. Is anything like this available or able to be created? If so, would it have the capacity to search between multiple InDesign documents and search the entire document for the image file names? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Kasyan,
    They were tagged using a program called Pathways created by a computer programmer the company used at the time. The issues that I was working on were annual Buyers' Guides so they were mainly just listings and inline graphics. The kinds of issues I work on now are monthly issue with various stories and no inline graphics, but display advertisements. And each story is created and laid out in a separate InDesign document. So I would need a script that can search an entire group of documents for file names and/or image boxes instead of just in one story in one document for inline graphics. (sorry if this is confusing).
    I currently do not have a script to work from and am looking for something new that can be used to save use the time of placing every ad manually.
    Thanks for your help and feedback!
    Matt

  • Smart collection of image files linked to InDesign documents?

    I would like to create a Smart Collection that finds all of the image files linked to InDesign documents in a specific folder.
    I am the yearbook advisor at school and I need to easily find all of the images that have been placed so that we don't reuse images by mistake.
    I have no scripting experience, so I can't create something myself, and I haven't been able to find anything that does such a thing.
    Many yearbook design software programs do offer something like this - indicating that an image has been used previously.
    I guess it would need to look at the metadata of the InDesign Files for the Linked Files and then pit all of the files found there into a Smart Collection.  Ideally, I would be able to further limit it by file type. ANd to not include Master pages if so desired (although that would just be a bonus!)
    I greatly appreciate any assistance anyone can give.
    Thanks!

    I'd be glad to give it a shot, even though I'm a beginner (and I am afraid I am out of my depth), but i'm missing something obvious because I could download and install the script, but if I try to open it to edit it, I just get gobbeldygook.  Any chance you could paste the script here?
    Again, I really appreciate your help.

  • My InDesign document is getting bigger with every saving, but i didn't change the placed images

    The related ebook PDF is 70 MB heavy - while the InDesign Document only has 3 pages (A4). I can't downsample the PDF-Size.
    Is ther a BAK in the latest Update of InDesign or Acrobat? The InDesign size mutates from 4 MB to 177 MB to 230 MB.

    Is it possible not to post this screenshot public?
    I have also placed the file sizes in the Explorer-Window (bottom left), and the situation, while i generate the ebook PDF (so that you can see my settings).
    Many thanks!
