Recurring iTunes problem; won't start/errors

There is a recurring problem with iTunes version 7.7. It has also occurred on versions from 7.4 through 7.6. Upgrading to iTunes 7.7 results in a no-start for iTunes. No errors or messages. It shows up in processes. If all Apple software is removed and registries edited, then re-install results in iTunes not starting with error like "App failed to start because SCARDDLG.dll cound not be found". This is Smart Card service (which I dont' use but iTunes wants). If Smart Card services are installed/started, iTunes will still not start (but no fatal error msg. or any messages at all).
I have removed/reinstalled several times. I have been through the MS methods for crypto services, edg.log rename, etc. It has still not helped. At this point I may have to resort to the same method when iTunes 7.4 gave this same problem. Get rid of all your APple software and re-install 7.3 from one of the retro software sites, i.e. oldapps.com. It also means you can forget about using your iPhone and many other newer Apple devices.
I would have thought that since this problem has been around for at least 4 versions and many users won't buy Apple products like iPhones since they can't use them on systems that won't run Apple software, that maybe this would be motivation for Apple to fix the problem and/or publish a solution. BTW; I am running Trend Micro and yes, ports and web addresses are configured for proper access.

There is a solution here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1661935

  • After installed, iTunes 10 won't start, error message appears

    Hi all,
Could anyone help me solve my problem.
I try to install itunes 10 on my windows vista SP1. After installation, while the application is about to start, there is a message 'the file ituneslibrary.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes'.
Thank you for the solution guys.

    Try these directions:

The title of the article does not match what you are seeing, but it has worked for others.
    Skip step #2, of course.
In step #7, instead of dragging the file over, I would copy & paste it. That will leave the original in the same spot in case you ever need it again.

  • ITunes 6 won't start (dosen't have to do with norton)

Keep in mind that my iTunes has been working just fine, but ever since I downloaded 6 I've been getting errors left and right. So, heres what happens. I install iTunes 6, and it installs fine. When I click the icon, I get the following error (copy and paste URL) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v452/N8NESS/error.jpg
So anyway after re-installing and re-booting several times to no avail, I figure "okay, well, since it started not working ever since I downloaded 6, I'll just re-install my old iTunes", right? WRONG! I install the old version (the most up to date version BEFORE 6), and it comes up with some crap about how Quicktime wasen't installed right. I even installed an even OLDER version, and it came up with another quicktime error. I would show a screen shot of that too,

    hi Nate!
the first thing we check for with the "itunes has encountered an error ..." is a broken quicktime. First see:

    Hi there
I have done a freash install of Leopard Server 10.5.4 and updated to 10.5.8 on an Xserve G5. Added a 2nd web site (in addition to default) and now web services won't start returning the error:

  • Itunes just won't start after the upgrade

I've upgraded my itunes, and done all the double checks I've found on this site. My itunes just will not start after the upgrade. It's frustrating to say the least because I can't even access my libary or edit my ipod. I've tried everything including uninstalling and reinstalling.. please help! I wanted to put my audio books on my ipod for a roadtrip tomorrow!

Thanks Katrina. I was able to find what I needed through the link that you provided.
To those that are having this problem, here's what I did to fix this issue:
+If I have a computer or device that does not work well with an AWD with the latest update, how can I install previous (earlier) versions of firmware?+
    +1. Open AirPort Utility.+
+2. From the AirPort Utility menu, hold the Option key *(Control key in Windows XP and Vista)* and choose Check for Updates....+
+3. Select the specific firmware version you require.+
    +4. Click Download.+
+5. Select your base station and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click on the AWD icon.+
    +6. Choose Base Station > Upload Firmware.+
+7. Select a firmware version and click OK.+
+An important note about installing firmware+
+After you have successfully installed a firmware update, AirPort Utility will wait for the AWD to restart. Once the AWD is available, AirPort Utility will display the standard configuration setup window with the Manual Setup and Continue buttons. Unless you intentionally wish to change some configuration of one of your apple Wireless Devices, you do not need to click Continue. At this point, simply quit AirPort Utility. Your AWD should be functioning correctly.+
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1218
I chose firmware: Airport Extreme with 8-2.11n (Fast Ethernet) 7.3.2 Be patient, as Airport Utility will report that it can't find the AEBS, but after a short while mine was back. I did not roll back my version of Airport Utility.
All appears to be normal and the iTunes library is rebuilding as I type this. Hopefully, Apple will figure out what's causing the problem with firmware 7.4.1

  • New itunes 5 won't start after download

I downloaded iutnes 5 and now when I click on the desktop icon or the one in the start menu itunes won't start! I also downloaded Norton Internet Security recently so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Can someone please offer a suggestion as to what I can do to start my itunes. I've wasted so many hours already trying to get it to work....Thanks

Yes, it could be you have "zombie" itunes in your tasks.
But I think it is more likely that some firewall/security software like "norton" is stopping net-enabled software from running. You could look at the task explorer to see if itunes is launching. I prefer the excellent, and free, process explorer from sysinternals.com. For one it is better at stopping zombie processes than task manager.
    http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html
So if you don't see any "itunes" or "ipod" processes running then you need to see about enabling them in your "Norton Internet Security"

  • Itunes installer won't start

Itunes 64bit installer wont start on my Windows vista/7 64 bit computers.
You double click and nothing happens. You right click and run as administrator nothing happens.
I've tried formatting the machines and re downloading it from apple.com and still nothing happens.
    Anyone else having problems?

You double click and nothing happens. You right click and run as administrator nothing happens.
I've tried formatting the machines and re downloading it from apple.com and still nothing happens.
This one can be caused by the installer getting damaged on the download.
What browser are you using for the download? Does it make any difference in the performance of the installer if you user Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa)?

  • [WinXP] Safari 3.1 Crashes / Won't Start / Error Report

When I try to start Safari 3.1 in Windows XP, it crashes right away.
Safari Web Browser has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
Well I decided to talk to Apple first. Safari 3.1 was successful on my mac, but won't start on my WinXP machine. Anyone have the same problem?
    It's not a VM, either.

    Try this:
    - Open a command shell. On Vista, do this as an administrator
    - cd \windows\fonts
    - dir /ah .*
    - If this returns files like "._marlett.ttf", this is what is likely causing your crash
    - del /ah .*
I'm not saying this will fix all crashes, but I've seen this fix at least one crash on launch a user was experiencing.

  • Itunes  11 won't open error 2, Itunes  11 won't open error 2

I am trying to open the newest version of Itunes but either I get error 2  or apple application support not found. Any sugguestions besides uninstalling it again I have done that at least 10 times  thanks

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleApplicationSupport.msi to do a standalone AAS install.
Does it install properly for you?
If instead you get an error message during the install, let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Itunes won't start, error 7, windows error 126.

    After updating my itunes a few weeks ago, it now won't load and I get the following error message;
the program can't start because avfoundationcf.dll is missing from your computer. try reinstalling the program to fix this.
    followed by this error messsge;
itunes was not installed correctly. pleasse reinstall itunes. error 7 (windows error 126).
I've tried numerous things including solutions posted in this forum but I can't fix it. I'm running windows 7 64bit btw. If anyone could please help that would be great, thank you.

the program can't start because avfoundationcf.dll is missing from your computer. try reinstalling the program to fix this.
Taken at face value, you're having trouble with an Apple Application Support program file there. (Apple Application Support is where single copies of program files used by multiple different Apple programs are kept.)
Let's try something relatively simple first. Restart the PC. Now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "Apple Application Support" and then click "Repair".
If no joy after that, try the more rigorous uninstall/reinstall procedure from the following post:
Re: I recently updated to vista service pack 2 and I updated to itunes

  • ITunes won't start: Error is "Windows - No Disk"

    Hi all,
So whenever I try to open iTunes, the following happens:
-About 1-2 minutes of the computer "grinding" or "thinking". Lights flashing, etc.
-Error message then pops up. It says "Windows - No Disk" and below that, it says "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into the drive." Below that are buttons for Retry, Cancel, and Continue.
I have Windows XP Pro. Any ideas? Thanks!

I am also getting the No Disk error, but only when I plug in my girl's iPod (shuffle). I can click continue or cancel a couple of times and it seems to work fine, but it is still very annoying. We have been using the shuffle without any problems for a few days. When we first got it, we had other problems. We spent about 12 hours between us trying to get iTunes to see the Shuffle. I followed all of the instructions in the KB articles to the letter. I combed the forums and finally found a solution, right before I was about to give up and declare the thing defective. The solution was to give the iPod a different drive letter (P:) than the one automatically given by XP, using Disk Management. This is essentialy the fix suggested by the MS KB article to which you refer.
At any rate, I've got to fix this No Disk issue before she updates her iPod next, or she will freak. I noticed once that after I clicked 'continue' a message box with a rapidly moving green progress bar appeared for a second or two. It looked like the same box that comes up when you attach a storage device like an external hard drive and Windows searches it for pictures, audio, etc. before it displays a list of appropriate actions to take based on the types it finds. No such list appeared, however. I think it is relevant at this point to mention that disk use is not enabled on this iPod.
It looks to me that the Apple software and the OS are fighting for control of the device. Based on what I have read on the forums today, I suspect that my anti-virus might have something to do with it. I am using AVG Free Edition. I can't troubleshoot it right now, because the girl has the iPod.
Any further help that the experts out there can give would be greatly appreciated. Apparently, Shuffle customers are not entitled to free phone or on-line chat support for any period of time. I have read quite a few posts on this type of problem, both in the iTunes and the iPod forums, and I think this is the only one with any attempt at a resolution. Well, except for the guy who said he fixed it by changing a setting in McAffe (sp?). I will also post whatever I find out.

  • Itunes and Quicktime won't start, error

my itunes/Quicktime suddenly failed to open. I get a message saying iTunes needs to close. This happened after it would not close by itself one time. I've tried to remove programs from my pc then readd them but the same error keeps happening. Can anyone help me?

    hi Double_Duce!
Message: Quicktime failed to initialize: error #63441
"Please make sure Quicktime is properly installed in this computer."
After clicking OK... the IntallDriver Module shutdown...
    Then Quicktime Error: 1606 - "Could not access network location QTComponents/. {retry} / {cancel}
hmmmm. it's actually a bit unusual (in my experience) to see both of those error messages together like that. (the 1603 at the end of the chain is just sort of a "by-blow" of the previous problems, and if we fix those the 1603 should go away of its own accord.)
let's first try doing something that has worked in the past with both of those initial error messages.
first, download and install a copy of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility (we will be using it later on):
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
then we'll try to uninstall any existing QT on your PC. use the QT portion of the complete uninstall instructions given here:
Troubleshooting iTunes, iPod Software, and QuickTime installation on Windows
... if you run into trouble on the uninstall, use the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove any existing QuickTime installation registry entries, and then use the uninstall instructions as a guide to a manual QT uninstall.
but even if you don't run into trouble, run the utility anyway afterwards just to make sure we've cleaned out any leftover registry entries.
once the QT has been scraped out, we'll try the careful standalone QT 7.0.3 install again.
does it go through okay this time? or do you get another error message?
    love, b

  • ITunes won't start (error -48)

    Installation is going well.
When I start iTunes, I get the licence aggrement. I click I Agree.
After 3 seconds, I get the message:
"The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error accured (-48)."
Please help... I want to use my new iPod !

Hello, I too am receiving this same error message and code when I try to start iTunes 6.0.1.3
This happened immediately after installing the application over a previous version (6.0)
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and this made no difference. I tried removing the iTunes folder from My Music.. I tried removing the settings directories from Documents and Settings (both All Users and my personal account)... None of these efforts have made any effect.
I have also checked security settings inside the My Music as well as the iTunes program dir -- nothing has changed with the privs in these places, and iTunes has regular access (and thus it was able to create its directories when I deleted them above)
    Frustrating. Frustrating. Frustrating.
Does anyone have any idea what error -48 means anyway?
