Recurring kernal panics solved by cloning startup drive back to internal.
My MacBook Pro is about 14 months old. This scenario started about 8 months ago About every 4 - 6 weeks I start getting kernel panics with increasing frequency. Resetting PRam doesn't seem to help. Booting off an external firewire drive doesn't stop the kernal panics and I even get kernel panics starting off the install disk. I've done a clone of my internal drive to an external sata drive connected to my dual2.5gig G5 connecting the macbookpro to the G5 using target mode (I put the macbookpro in target mode). If I reformat the internal drive using the install disk and clone the startup drive back from the sata drive connected to my g5 (again starting the macbookpro in target mode) everything returns to normal for about a month and then the same thing starts happening again.
Any ideas what I could do to avoid this recurring problem.
Hi
If it were me I'd suspect a hard disk problem as well. They can and do fail, and whilst I guess it can happen at any time, they do seem to fail either very early on (in the first few months) or very late on (after several years). When the problem occurs, if the drive doesn't show up in the disk utility, it would seem to be something fairly fundamental that a reformat probably wouldn't solve anyway. I guess you could just check the power and ribbon cables are seated securely, but failing that, trying another hard disk would be one option. That would prove whether the problem lies with the drive or the computer. Most external drives are just normal internal ATA drives mounted in an external FireWire or USB enclosure. It may be possible to remove your external drive from the enclosure and install it internally just to see whether that fixes the problem.

Can anyone help me? My screen turns grey and forces me to reboot after which I get a kernal panic report. It generally happens when using Skype, but I don’t know whether it is Skype related. (Usually I have Safari open as well). Can anyone make sense of the panic report and advise me on the next steps I should take?

How often do they occur? You will have to use Safe Mode for that amount of time.
If you don't get any panics, it is likely the ShapeServices driver (HSAudio Device).
The other test is to just uninstall it and see if you still get panics. You need to follow the directions of the developer or use their uninstaller for whatever that is. -
Recurring kernal panic on start up screen.
The problem started after I downloaded the latest iTunes update and selected automatically restart after download. I have tried starting in safe mode and it just keeps the little grey spinning wheel on the white screen for ages. I have manually restarted it and turntable it off at the mains and left it for a while but nothing has helped.
I have a 27" iMac Intel 2009 (I think), it was part of the faulty batch that were recalled to have the hard drive replaced. Apple did replace the hard drive but after a while the odd kernal panic started to happen and now it won't even start up.
Am I missing a trick here? I feel like I have gone through the correct process of dealing with a kernal panic. Is there another way of dealing with this issue with out dragging it down to my local apple store?
Many thanks,
MaxCan you boot from your backup? (You have one, right?) Can you boot into the recovery partition? Can you boot from the original install disk? Do you have any utilities like Disk Warrior that come on a bootable CD?
In short, do you have anything other than the internal drive to boot from? -
Trying to link existing mac pro time machine backup to cloned startup drive
Hi
I have recently had to replace my startup drive on my Mac Pro as it was failing. I used SuperDuper! for this, and the clone is working fine as my new startup drive. I then went to run my next time machine backup (i backup to a time capsule), and time machine connected to the existing backup but wanted to backup everything as if backing up for the first time.
So i did a bit of researching around, and found this hint:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090213071015789
which changes the UUID registered with time machine, from the old drive to the new drive, so that it thinks that it's the old drive and carries on where it left off. i followed the instructions in the hint carefully and everything seemed to go right (i had to copy fsaclctl from an old leopard backup as it is missing in snow leopard). but when i ran the next backup again time machine wanted to backup everything.
towards the bottom of the hint, there is a comment about the UUID generated under snow leopard, as follows:
"I'm concerned that the output of xattr showed 37 hex pairs, not the 32 hex digits and dashes. By the looks -- I've forgotten all my ASCII -- it is a hex representation of the actual hex UUID (43 41 ...) and its dashes (2D), terminated with 00. That's arguably the same as the UUID, but not quite close enough to give me the warm & fuzzies"
So if anyone can help me get this working right, using the method described in the hint, or some other method, i would be very grateful. Seems like my scenario isn't that uncommon (changing a startup drive), and it baffles me that there isn't a more straightforward way to make this work.
thanks

3. I am having troubles copying files(iphoto library) from my timemachine backup on to my imac.
That's correct. Time Machine backups retain the original ownership and permissions. So one user doesn't have access to another user's data. Usually, that's a good thing.
4. I don't need anything else except a few particular files, but everytime i try drag or copy it gives me the 'no privilege/permission error'.
Your best bet may be to use +Migration Assistant+ to migrate the user account and selected data. Then log on as that user and use/copy the data as desired. See the pink box in #19 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). -
When cloning startup drive -need to copy desktop files separately?
Hi, I am new at this stuff and want to be sure when reinstalling the OS that I don't lose any files. I have used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the startup disk, but cannot tell whether the destop files and folders are there or not. So pardon the obvious question, but do I need to copy the desktop separately. If no, how do I detect these files on the cloned disk? The desktop icon, seems the same no matter which drive I open, so I am concerned that there is only one copy of these files?
Input appreciated! There is no one desktop. Each user has a desktop folder in their home folder, so if the user files are saved, the desktop will be saved.

Recurring Kernel panic/crash 27" late 2013 iMac
Just got this new 27" iMac (my first iMac - been using old "pro" boxes) and I am getting constant recurring kernal panics. Also misc app crashes.
Only thing 3rd party hardware I have is a Promise J4 Thunder bolt ext storage hooked up. Here are the last 2 kernel panics - Cany anybody tell
me what is going on? Still trying to learn how to decode/read these KPs. Also had the J4 hooked up to a 13" MBP with no issues
for a few months now so I am suspecting some sort of hardware issue with this new iMac - have to decide very soon to return this thing.
TIA

And I have the same problem. I was told it might be 3rd party kernel modules that caused the kernel panics, but I'm starting to doubt that, seeing how many people have the same issue.
So I doubt returning your Mac would solve anything if you get the same configuration: there seems to be something wrong with these… -
2012 Macbook Pro recurring Kernel Panic
My Late 2011 MBP (2.4 Ghz 13-inch runing OS X Lion 10.7.5) has a recurring Kernal Panic. It has been running slow lately constatnly getting the spinning pinwheel and when I empty the trash especially when emptying from my exernal hard drive, I am forced to hard restart my laptop. The problem has something to do with the "Locum" process. Does any have the same issue or a solution? I am desperate for answers as I am a DJ and need my laptop immediately. Thanks for your help. Below is the log.

Powerbook won't wake up from sleep, trouble rebooting, kernal panic
Hi,
My powerbook has recently been having some troubles. This started over the weekend and nothing major has changed recently. I added some new RAM months ago, but that was like in June maybe, and it was Samsung module which i think is what that line of powerbooks used originally. The computer had been exhibiting signs of sluggishness and slow operation which i was mostly attributing to a pretty full HD that was in need of some optimazation and maintenance (which i do semi-regularly with Tech Tool Pro).
So, when it goes to sleep, or when the lid gets closed, it won't wake back up. black screen and unresponsive to any keys, though i can still hear the fans and some HD spinning noises inside. So, this forces me to force shutdown by holding the power key until i hear the machine turn off. Then reboot. When re-booting i have been getting a combination of kernal panics and freezes on startup, just hanging with a blue screen and a spinning startup indicator.
I can boot with no problem from an external Firewire drive. So i've run a ful Tech Tool sweep of the machine, optimized the HD and all that. Then, all is well UNTIL it goes to sleep again and then i'm back in the same cycle.
Any thoughts or advice here?Yeah. I guess i am going to take it in this week. in the meantime though, i wonder if anyone can translate this panic.log entry from another round of kernal panics that i just went through this morning. I had about 4 or 5 of them in a row after trying to reset my PRAM to try and fix an issue with my external isight.

Does Installing Windows XP stop Kernal Panics?
i just baught a MBP 2.0 15 inch last week and had to send it in for repairs because of constant Kernal panics about ever 5-10 minutes after browsing the web using safari. The panics only occured after i started using wireless. I used the computer for about 20 hours, doing everything with it, before even connecting and it worked fine. I called apple and he told me to reinstall OSX, so i did, first an archive and install, next a complete erase and install. this did not work, as the problem persisted. Keep in mind that unlike many uses who have gotten kernal panics in login and startup screen, i have only gotten them when browsing on safari, and connecting through ituness, all wireless. Apple finally told me to send it in for repair. After reading extensivly on here, ive heard so many horror stories of people getting new mbp's and still having problems. I was just wondering it getting it repaired was a better choice, and if anyone will think they can acctually fix this problem. Let me know what u think about my issues. thanks
-BenYes!! They are amazing. I had the same problem and they replaced my entire logic board so fast it made my head spin. The problem is now history and I'm a happy man. Nobody likes the hassle sending back a computer, but it is sometimes the only fix. A new logic board solved by problems. Let me say that a week later my battery died. They replaced that pronto, as well. I'm a bit of a sucker for trying the the "first" of any new product line, but I will admit that Apple has gone beyond the normal standard of customer support in fixing it. Give them a call and chill.

First back up with TM....kernal panic
last night, i installed a laCie 500GB USB2 Ext. HD to use with time machine. i reformated the drive and went to bed. this morning i woke to my fans running to beat the band and the command lines of a kernal panic.
i restarted and then restarted time machine. it had to bake a 214gb back up and had about 30gb left.....don't know why so big, the files it was copying is only 140gb.....at any rate...when i tried to get it to finish the back up, it only moved an additional 30mb of data then seemed to stop.
I trashed the entire back up and started over. it has been running all day. When i stopped for dinner, it had 181gb done of the 215....then had another kernal panic. i restarted again and am back at it only backed up an additional 30mb of data...still has about 34gigs to go.
what am i doing wrong?I think this is it:

After Kernal Panic can't see Time Machine Drive
I have a usb iSub speaker.
Apparently it is NOT compatible with Leopard but I have been following certain threads with interest as I hate to sell it just yet.
Yesterday there was a post that said if you go into Audio MIDI Setup and change some settings, then change them back- your iSub will work!
Well when I was in the Audio MIDI Setup utility I experienced a kernal panic (first since using Leopard)
After that I was not able to boot past the Grey Apple Screen.
I even left it overnight and it would not start.
I finally reverted to my old Tiger backup external drive- I booted to that, then started my Tiger DVD,
I ran Disk Utility, then Repaired permissions and I am back up and running.
My Time Machine hard drive is not showing on my desktop though! (I have 2 external drives- one is my old Tiger cloned back up with SuperDuper- the other is my TimeMacine backup)
I tried looking for it with DiskUtility but it is not seeing it either.
Any advice would be helpful at this point.
One other thing...it seems to be writing....the case the hard drive is in has lights on it and it is blinking..and I can hear it slightly.Hello:
If I were you (and I am not), I would bundle up the repaired computer and your Time Machine drive and take it in and ask the Apple person to bring it back to life. IMHO, that should have been done the first time.

Kernal Panic after update to 10.4.6/Missing HD Space/Won't Startup from DVD
Sorry to lump three problems together, but they may all be related.
First - I was getting random Kernal Panics while at 10.4.5, so I attempted to update to 10.4.6. The computer wouldn't even come close to starting up. I got a screen full of Kernal Panic info. I reinstalled Tiger 10.4.3, and that's where the system stands now. It's running fine.
Second - My computer suddenly announced that the startup drive was out of disk space. I looked and the window said 30g. I closed the window and opened it again only to see it at zero k. I dumped some items to get some disk space, but now I can't get my 30g back.
Third - I want to startup from the Tiger disk like I did when I reinstalled, but it won't startup from the DVD. I'd like to run Disk Repair on the main hard drive. It showed some errors when I ran a Test using the Disk Utility.
I'm hoping this is all related. The computer seems to be running fine, but I can't update or find my missing space. Any advice I can get on these issues would be appreciated. Thanks.
JonIs your computer saving a panic.log after each of the kernel panics? You can see by opening Console (in /Applications/Utilities) and looking for it. I'm not at my Mac now, so I can't tell you under what section to look for that log.
When you try to boot from the CD, are you holding down the 'C' key as the computer reboots? You can also try rebooting with the Option key pressed, which will present you with a list of bootable volumes. It will also give you access to the Apple Hardware Test (if this is the DVD that came with the computer). If you can select the Apple Hardware Test, I'd recommend doing the Extended Test, which will test the hardware, including the RAM.
For the disappearing disk space, you could have some process that is going bezerk and filling up the log files. In any event, to see where you disk space is being used, download and run Omni DiskSweeper. -
Will downloading a newer OS solve kernal panics
I have been experiencing numerous kernal panics over the last several weeks forcing me to force power off and back on. I have tried several trouble shooting tips but so foar no improvement. I am wondering if I upgrade to a the newest iMac OSX (Mountian Lion 10.8.3) I might solve the problem. Any ideas?
Well I didn't have to wait long. Here is the report - I also sent it to Apple but I know they only use it for general info - it won't help me. Hello
I have a MacBook Pro 17" (not unibody) with the GeForce 8600GT graphic card. The last two days my computer has had strange errors. The screen starts flashing, and the computer freezes. The only thing to do is to power off. When I started the computer again I got the Kernal Panic during startup. I've done a hardware test, and it found no error. Changed the harddrive with a new OS - same error. Reset the "cmdalt+PR", same error. I then took out the Airport card, and then it worked perfectly.
The next day the same problem came back (even without a Airport wifi card). Restarted the computer, and got the Kernal Panic during bootup. I reset the "cmdalt+PR", and then it worked.
What is wrong with the computer? I don't think it is the usual nVidia error with the 8600GT card.

com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily 2.6The Nvidia problem isn't something that is always "there", Andriaz. It occurs, as I understand it, because of heat stress generated by the GPU on its connection with the motherboard, and is accordingly potentially "progressive" rather than "there" or "not there" (Some companies, I gather , have been making a living by simply reflowing the connections between the GPU and the motherboard accordingly when people have not been able to obtain service under the extended repair program.)
So the fact that you "tested" for the NVIdia problem in the past doesn't mean that you might not be suffering it now.
My own experience of the NVidia issue involved blank screens rather than KPs, but I gather it can be manifested in a variety of ways (which makes sense given its nature). Given your log results I don't think you should discount the possibility that this is the cause of your problem. I'd get it tested again.
Have you tried running the basic Apple Hardware test using your original OS DVD set yet? Might throw up other possibilities. As BB suggests, from the description it is likely to be hardware related, I think.
Cheers
Rod
