Recurring kernel panic... could this have to do with the power source?
Hello. I'm a student from Bosotn with a school-issued MacBook Pro and I'm currently in Berlin for the semester with a group of other students with the same computers. None of us experienced kernel panics before coming to Berlin, but since then many (I'd estimate at least half) have experience one or (in most cases) more kernel panics where the screen gradually becomes grey and instructs us to reboot the computer. Because it hasn't happened before, I'm wondering if it is related to the power source, specifically the 220-110 power conversion. However, it has also happened to people operating solely on battery power, but I'm wondering if the battery could just be charging insufficiently or something, too. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!
Thanks for the reply... Unfortunately, I can't find the panic log under Library/Logs or through searching for "PanicReporter". I don't know if it's too much to speculate without the log, but if it's not, I'd love to hear it. Thanks and sorry I couldn't provide more information.

Alo, my Macbook pro i7 2 GHz Intel Core i7 (early 2011) will not go to sleep with the power source connected. only enters sleep mode when running on battery. Someone did this happen, and it could solve?
There is no output from that command line? Maybe the pid changed.
I'll repeat what I am trying to find out...
1. You do a pmset -g on the terminal.
2. The output from that pmset should have a line that says "sleep 0 (imposed by n)" where n is some number.
3. The ps ax | grep n is supposed to display what the process associated with n is.
It's the output from step 3 that should indicate what is causing you not to sleep.
But speaking of sleep, that's where I am going. -
I have new HD 750GB Hybrid in 2008 Macbook Pro 17" w/ Snow Leopard 10.6.8 connected to old Hard drive(250GB that had 10.5.8 on it at time of failure) via SATA cable to USB port with external power source.. Computer not acknowledging old HD at all in Disk Utility or otherwise (that I'm aware of)..Do I need to partition New HD and load old(10.5.8) onto partition to recognize older drive for data recovery? Thanks Wayno08
You do not need to load 10.5.8 onto your new drive in order for a 10.6.8 system to see the contents of a 10.5.8 system.
You might want to check out the hard drive troubleshooting bootk in the downloads section of this web site:
http://scsc-online.com
They also sell a product named Phoenix that can do OS extraction and volume copying/cloning, but to be honest I don't know if it's appropriate in this case.
I would suggest the following:
Open up Terminal.app (under utilities) and type "diskutil list" without the quotes. This is the command line version of Disk Utility. If the external drive doesn't show up at all, then it's likely not connected properly, not getting power, or just plain dead. If it shows up with only a devce name like disk0s16 but no volume it means the drive is seen, the OS just can't make sense of it.
Assuming the drive shows up, I would try to boot off the original installl disks for the system and run Disk Utility from that. I'm assuming the drive will show up. You'll want to select the option to repair the drive and then perform the option to repair the permissions.
If the unit isn't showing up, as per step 1, try a different USB port. More importantly with your unit, try it on another side of the unit if possible. If you read the book I referenced above, some of those units have I/O boards that are separated from the logic board. If the cable from the logic board to the I/O card goes bad or has problems, which isn't all that uncommon, some or all of the ports on the I/O card may appear to be bad as well. If you use a USB port on another side, it would be routing out of a completely different I/O path, so that's a potential problem.
If the drive is only seen with a device name such as disk0s16, it's likely either the index files are corrupt beyond Disk Utility's ability to see them. The only thing that I think would help would be a product named DIsk Warrior, but I can't guarantee that.
Disk Warrior can be found at:
http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
The company that I linked in the first link above also makes a product named Scannerz that does HD and system testing. The Scannerz/Disk Warrior combination make a good pair because the complement each other....Scannerz does what Disk Warriror can't and Disk Warrior does what Scannerz can't. However, at this point I'm not too sure getting a tool like Scannerz would be of much use because it sounds like the damage has already been done.
Let us know what happens. -

<Edited by Host>Based on the age of the machine it may have to do with a known series of Apple notebooks that had bad batteries. Good luck finding an Apple Store that will honor the old exchange/repair program for them. http://www.macsales.com/ offers replacement batteries that will work as long as the case inside isn't too warped.

Before the update my iPod was charging fine. then when I updated it started acting funny like one minute it would charge then it wouldn't then the next after IOS 8 came out my iPod wouldn't charge at all. could it be that my charger isn't an apple product? PLEASE HELP!!! I have important notes from school on here and I'm afraid to ask my mother for a new one without giving her a good explanation.
Could be that the update make the iPod more aware of marginal cable. Other users have reported the same.

I have a Bluetooth receiver transmitter by Brookstone attached to the home stereo that we use to connect via bluetooth and play music from Pandora etc. From our iPhones or iPad. It has worked flawlessly until I updated the software on my iPad and iPhone to 5.1.1. . It still is able to connect but there is no sound. When we use my wifes iPad 1 which is still running s/w 4.1 there is no such problem. Anyone else seen this and know a fix?

How to diagnose my recurring kernel panic?
My MacBook Air (Mid 2012) running 10.9.1 is now having recurring kernel panics.
They all are in the same kernel extension: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily
Below is an example of the output from the system diagnostic logs. It has happened 5 times in the last week and once before that. The pace of the panics also seems to be accelerating. I did get a full TImeMachine backup of the system so I don't think I'll lose anything but this is the fourth time I have had to take this machine in. First two times for SSD corruption issues, then they managed to mis-install the motherboard so one USB port was no longer useful.
Can I get Apple to give me a new machine with all these issues? Or am I just unlucky?
Thanks in advance,
Charlie

Recurring kernel panics, Macbook Pro 13" mid-2010
The last month or so I have noticed that my computer gets very warm and the fan spins like crazy at times, mostly when I stream HD-video or visit sites with many GIFs running at the same time. Lately (last week or so) I have also been having recurring kernel panics and having hte computer just freezing up with weird graphics on the screen, sometimes several times in a row, also this mostly when I stream video. But sometimes very randomly, when the computer shouldn't be stressed at all. My amateur guess is that the GPU is the bad guy, and that I need to replace the logic board.
The only things I have done lately that might cause this is an OS-update to 10.8.5 sometime around two months ago, and around one month ago I encrypted the computer using filevault. Unfortunately I'm not into macs enough to be able to interpret the KP-report, maybe someone is able to do that and let me determine wether it is the logic board or not that need to be replaced? If it is the logic board I'm thinking I should be able to replace it myself, if I just get ahold of the right one. Or is it a hard thing to do?

Some versions of it are incompatible. Remove it and see whether there's an improvement.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software. -
Recurring Kernel Panic with Mountain Lion
I have a recurring kernel panic on OSX 10.8.2 but I've been getting it since 10.7 with this mac. I've replaced the hard disk and stress tested the RAM for hours and have yet to find any problems.
Thanks in advance for helping me to troubleshoot this.
Here's the readout of the latest panic:

Experiencing Recurring Kernel Panic
So I've been experiencing recurring kernel panics for at least a month now and I seem to have narrowed down the issue to the RAM. Now I'm just not sure whether it's corrupt kernel files associated with the RAM or the actual hardware itself.
I've run the extended apple hardware test and the error message I recieve (within 5 seconds) is that the error is with the file 4MEM/1/40000000:0x84938218
I've downloaded memtest and run that within terminal. Funny thing about that is as soon as I type "memtest all" my macbook kernel panics almost immediately. Something about the "memory lock-up" phase".
Other than that my computer works fine as long as I don't run too many applications at once. Often times video streaming or opening too many tabs in a web browser will do it. And you can forget about running games that will kernel panic almost immediately.
Oh yeah and here's an example of the logs I've been getting. It's not the most recent but they all say the same thing-I've checked.

So that sums up my problem basically. Specs should be posted at the bottom of the panic log. I'm just wondering is this something I'm going to have to go to an apple store to have them fix? Or can I restore the corrupt files myself? Am I going to have to install brand new RAM?
Please let me know if more info is needed and thanks in advance for any help.So get new RAM, or have Apple repalce it under warranty.
If it occurs again it's likely the logicboard. -
Help! Recurring kernel panic.
I am getting a recurring kernel panic on my macbook pro running Mountain Lion, which happens on shut down. It is after an auto install of firmware for my wi fi router. Could it be a virus? Or someone getting into the router? How do I fix it? Thanks so much.
This is not related to malware or hacking. Can you post your latest kernel panic log?

Recurring Kernel Panic on start-up – 24" iMac 2.16
Hey all,
Just coming on here for any tips for a last ditch attempt to resurect my iMac. I have had absolutely no problems with it for 4-years and suddenly went to turn it on and it kernel panics. I have tried everything on here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742 about what to do, and it kernels everytime. The only thing I can think to do is to reset the PRAM and hopefully get something out of it.
But at the moment, whether I boot from a disc or safe boot it can't seem to get past the white screen with the grey apple logo.
Any tips or help will be greatly appreciated.
CheersI actually got it to start up on the CD, and I clicked repair hdd. It ended up saying that HFS was repaired, but the other thing could not be repaired...
what does this mean?
-THE COMPUTER ACTUALLY DOES HAVE OSX 10.4.10!!! -
Recurring kernel panic (AirPort suspected)
Hi All,
I have a recurring kernel panic - it comes more and more often, I will send my iBook to Apple, yet maybe someone know what does the following mean:

But you mention in your title that you suspect the AirPort is causing this. Have you tried removing the card to see if the panics stop? Also, and I know this sounds silly, but do you have at least 10% of your hard drive free? -
Recurring kernel panics. What is the problem?
I get recurring kernel panics and am not sure how to solve this issue. My MacBook Pro is just a few months old. It is running 10.7.5 Lion; I am unable to install the firmware update 2.9 or the supplemental update 10.7.5. The panic happens when I open my laptop back up from sleeping. It doesn't happen all the time but has happened about 6 times in the last month. I have tried resetting the PRAM.

For the Firmware Update 2.9, I get this error when I try to unpack the update:

I'm definitely running V 10.7.5, so both updates should work. ?
