Recurring Panic ... Daily+

Over the past year my mid-2012 MacBook Pro Retina 15" freezes and reboots at least once daily. It happens while I'm working or while the machine is sitting idle. I currently only have a Thunderbolt display, a Seagate Slim HDD (for Time Machine) and a Logitech Performance MX mouse connected. I'm suspicious the Slim HDD may be the culprit because anytime there is a memory card, card reader, etc. plugged in the panics seem to increase in frequency. And, once I experience a reboot ... the reboot seems to hang until I unplug the HDD. I am still running OSX 10.8.5. I've considered upgrading, but do not want to start experiencing more problems. I've read through numerous panic threads and am tired of trying to figure out what is going on. And going to the Apple Store is just not worth the effort. The last time I visited them regarding this issue they didn't really know what the problem was. So they swapped out my Thunderbolt display ... but the panics never ceased ... and I've just put up with them because I didn't have time to deal with it. From what I can tell each panic report is the same. Here is the latest:

I left out a small piece of info. I've had the the laptop just over a year and this started happening days after the return window ... which isn't very long after purchasing if I remember correctly. The Logitech software was installed many months after I began experiencing the panics.
Did you update the OS recently? Might be related.
Panic log indeed points to I/O (including USB). So, you might try
1. resetting the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
If that doesn't help, then I would still try uninstalling that Logitech software. I haven't tried a Logitech mouse that had it's own software in 5 years. But when I did I always found it terribly unstable and caused problems both in the OS 9 and OS X.
If you want to troubleshoot and diagnose whether it's the mouse or the HDD as you suspect, then you need to isolate. I'd also double check Logitech for the latest drivers/software if you must use it.
Also check Seagate to see if there's a firmware update for your HDD -- FYI if you do that always make a backup of the drive if it contains critical or important info. Firmware updates can go wrong, and when they do, you're often left with a brick.

  • How 'recur events' daily but not, say, weekends? or How delete just 1 day?

I see options to make an event recur daily, weekly, or annual.
If select daily of course it recurs every day of week.
    But only want weekdays.
So how delete so doesn't recur every Saturday or Sunday, or any other day of wk?
I click on the Saturday event and click delete, but am presented only with option to delete all events. Delete one day of wk and it deletes them all.
    So how?
Or is only way just to make an event then past it into M-F each day, etc?
    thank you.

No secrets here; I wrecked tons of events before I finally grew comfortable with the detailing, so I recommend flailing around before you actually require a detail.
This is the joy of "it just works." If it doesn't, then your intuition is obviously to blame. The missing manual titles are the most appropriately named books. Don't forget that all SW sellers are doing the same thing now so I still like Apple for being more intuitive than the other guys, especially with the temptation of Unix right behind the door to throw consistency to the four winds. I have similar feelings about all post-X Apple products, but I'm not going to sit through hours of video tutorials just to pick up a single detail that has me hung up. Books are a great random access information store, but expensive to create. I think they should author full manuals with digital distribution, like PDF's.
The sky hook is out back with the steam bucket. Turns out there's yet another SkyHook on the horizon and not just random engineers and tow truck companies; some big aeronautics builder was commercializing dirigible airships for heavy lift applications when the economy dropped through the basement.

I have tried everything to diagnose and troubleshoot and it continues to kernel panic on a daily basis...
I have reinstalled the OS twice, removed programs, removed peripheals, called AppleCare... and nothing. I am reluctant to take it into the store until I have some sort of clue as to what is causing it...

  • Kernal panics - daily? Help?

    Hi Folks
Maybe you can help... lately my imac intel has been kernal panicing.. a lot.
I can't narrow it down to one bit of software, or anything. Today it just kernal panic'd and showed that nasty multi-lingual message while I was watching a DVD and not even touching the thing...
Now - I saved the bug report, but it doesn't mean much to me. But can anyone else shed light on it? I'll post it below. It looks like it could be something with USB... anyone? Please? It makes me sad!
Thanks in advance for any advice!!

    Hey guys
    Thanks for the quick replies!
I ran the hardware test... and nothing showed up. Did the extended tests and all 'appears' to be fine.
    So that's a good thing, I suppose.
I've not installed any new RAM or anything, and the only new thing added in the past few months would be my apple keyboard (which is lovely!).
I've disconnected all stuff that wasn't necessary (Sorry, Palm, you served me well but Blackberry has now made you obsolete!). I'm currently leaning towards blaming my HP C4180 printer. I remember that it had some nasty coded error message on it a while ago - and it's not been too reliable lately. So I've disconnected that and am hoping not to see the kernal panic again...
It's hard to troubleshoot something that doesn't happen at a specific point or when I'm doing something... and as this is my main machine I just have to wait it out and see if it happens again.
Hoping it doesn't and I can safely blame the printer! Otherwise will have to blame one of the 5 external hard drives. But they all tested out okay.
I will give it a week and if it doesn't happen again, Hurrah!
If it IS the printer, how can I hardware troubleshoot that? Or should I contact HP?
Thanks again for your suggestions. I spent ages looking for my hardware test disc until I read that it's on the Install disc. Doh! Shows how old fashioned I am, eh?
That Xlab article is brilliant.. have bookmarked it, but hope I don't have to look at it again!

Try uninstalling the software that installed these:
    tc.tctechnologies.driver.TCNear    8786
    com.waves.driver.soundgrid    2.0.0
Use the uninstaller provided by the developer of the software. If that eliminates the kernel panics, try reinstalling one at a time to determine which one is causing the problems.
You may be able to update them to current versions that work with Mountain Lion.
Also, if those drivers are for external hardware, disconnect the hardware to test.

  • 800Mhz FP now Kernel Panics Daily

Well, I've run pretty much every test that I have access to and still can't really pin point the cause of the kernel panics that I am seeing.
So I'm going to post the last panic log and see what people think.

    Hi Dave,
I've had really similar problems for many months, and I think Apple Tech Support found a solution. Check out this article:
    Charlie

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: Kernel panic when using Internet Sharing with a dialup connection
If you have Internet Sharing turned on and are using a dialup modem (such as the Apple internal modem) in Mac OS X 10.4 to 10.4.2, you may experience a kernel panic. During a kernel panic, you will see a message that says you need to restart your computer.
To avoid this issue in the future, deselect the "Use TCP header compression" modem option as follows:
    1. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    2. Click Network.
    3. From the Show pop-up menu, choose Internal Modem (or other modem if you're not using the Apple internal modem).
    4. Click the PPP Options button.
    5. Deselect the "Use TCP header compression" checkbox.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Click Apply Now.
    8. Quit System Preferences.

  • How to schedule a workflow for recurring executions: The solution

Scheduling a workflow for recurring execution has been long awaited in WFA, perhaps from 2.0 time. The following document shows how to get it done. I've also explained the logic behind it. It’s very simple to use, meets every requirement which one can have from a scheduler and of course highly flexible. Let's go!! The Real stuff. What is this? Is this actually a scheduler? No. This is actually a command in your workflow, but a special 'magical' command. This 'magical' command logic is built using the answers for the following questions: Can a workflow be scheduled for a delayed execution in a future time? Yes, but only one execution instance. If you want the next execution, execute the workflow again providing the same set of inputs and the execution date/time.During workflow execution, can a command inside a workflow get to know what is the  name of the workflow? YesDuring workflow execution, can the command know what is the job execution id? YesIs there any programmatic interface available to know what are the user input provided or a particular job execution? YesCan a command inside a workflow trigger another workflow? Yes.Can a command inside the same workflow trigger itself? Absolutely yes. I've ticked all boxes needed to build such a solution. The solution is to make the workflow a smart workflow, so smart that it can schedule itself for the next execution. It no longer needs any other task scheduler to tigger it. WFA provides a large set of REST APIs for other 3rd part SW integration. But I  also can make  good use of these APIs to make smart workflows. I have always believed that WFA should not only be seen as a framework for automating Storage boxes or server, but just about any task( inside a computer of course) which is done manually. WFA is an awesome product indeed.  So this is a command called "Workflow Scheduler" which  you can put in your workflow as another command. Prerequisites: You need PowerShell 3.0 on your WFA server. I certainly could have done it for PoSH2.0 as well, but life for web interfaces  using PowerShell is so much easier with Posh3.0. Posh3.0 is a big jump from 2.0. WFA is fully supported to work on Posh3.0. Its available by default in Win2012, Win2008 can be upgraded, Win2003 users can't use it. Add credentials of a WFA Admin/Architect in you WFA itself with Name/IP: localhost Match: ExactType: OtherName/IP: localhostUsername: <WFA Admin/Architect Username>Password: <User Password>   3.  Minimum WFA version 2.2. This is only needed for Importing the dar. I've provided the command code in text too. The command code is the real deal. How to use it? If you have a workflow which you want for recurring executions, just add this command "Workflow Scheduler" in it. The command takes parameters for the workflow execution intervals. For example minsInterval for executing this workflow every x minutes, or daysInterval for executing the workflow etc.Now just like a normal workflow execution execute this workflow deciding what is the trigger time. Example: Suppose you want the execution every day at 10:00 PM.So provide daysInterval = 1 And execute the workflow for a delayed execution at 10:00 PM. You can pick the day to start as you wish. The workflow will execute at 10:00 PM and when this execution reaches our magical command "workflow scheduler", this command will trigger the same workflow  with same set of inputs for the next execution at 10:00 PM tomorrow. And so on an so forth. I’ve attached a very simple example workflow here to help you understand. An Example of a workflow scheduled for recurring execution Daily at 11:30 PM starting 10-March-2015     How to stop/suspend this recurring execution? Easy. You just abort the next scheduled job execution in Execution=> Execution Status. The cycle will stop. How to resume it? Easy again. Just resume the same aborted job. The cycle restarts. Can I change the schedule execution time? Yes. After aborting the current execution, you can resume the same workflow at a new time. Execution interval can't be modified as you can't change the command parameters. But the recurring execution now can occur at a new time. Where or which position to place this “workflow scheduler” command in your workflow? At the beginning ? At the end? Or somewhere in the middle. This completely depends on your choice. See some below cases. You don't want the next job execution scheduling to happen if any of the commands in my current workflow execution fails: Put command “workflow scheduler” in the end. It will trigger the schedule of the next job execution only when all real original commands of your workflow have passed. else not.     You want continuous job executions irrespective of the workflow command failures: Put it in the beginning. It will trigger the schedule for next execution before any of the actual command begin executing.     You want an approval before the next execution job is scheduled: Add an approval point before the comamnd.           So it’s all left to you.      Can an operator decide the execution schedule? Yes, but which workflows will be available to him/her for this recurring execution will have to be decided by the designer. This is a good thing to have as it serves for access control in a way. The Architect/Admin can now restrict which workflow can be put for recurring executions. Operators can’t execute just any workflow available to him for automatic recurring execution. And the workflow designer can also choose which scheduling parameter is to be made a variable for the operator. For example the designer want the operator to schedule a given workflow only for weeks Interval and not months or days i.e. he/she can only chose to schedule for weekly, biweekly etc. executions and  nothing else. For this the designer can define a User-Input variable only for weeksInterval parameter. It’s Done. You want workflow execution to be scheduled either for daily or once in 2 days but not any other. You can restrict this. Or he/she wants to give full freedom to the operator make his/her own decision about scheduling, he defined user-input variable for all scheduling parameters. The workflow designer wants weekly schedule but the day should not be a weekday: You can even do this. Is this flexible enough for my requirements? I’ve attached the very command code. You can modify the command as per your requirements. Suppose you want daily execution of a certain workflow at 10:00 PM but skip a day of execution if the day is a Monday. Modify the code check for the day and add another day if it’s a Monday. Its posh code and highly readable. So you can see how this can be used in a  variety of ways. This is the beauty of a programmatic solution. Its highly flexible, it allows users to design solution based on their requirements. Flexibility is the heart & soul of WFA. Thats why I like it. I have a workflow but I don't want to modify it by adding a new command in it. Can I still use this solution? Yes but with WFA 3.0 on wards. WFA3.0 allows to create modular workflows. Create a parent workflow with you actual workflow as a child workflow in it. Add our “workflow scheduler” command too. So now you don't need to touch your existing workflow. I've attached a workflow example here.   Have fun!! sinhaa

Providing a new version 1.1.0 of the command "WFA Schedular" Changes made: Added conditional String Representation based on the Scheduling parameter provided. Provided check for the right number of parameters passed into the command.Added a new parameter "Expiry Date" to automatically stop the recurring execution upon expiry.Check for Posh3.0 version in code.Have Fun!! sinhaa Below example for:Schedule a workflow for recurring execution every alternate day i.e. once in 2 days at 10:30 PM starting 06-Jul-2015 (Today's date is 02-Jul-2015) . The recurring workflow execution  should expire on 31-Dec-2015 and stop.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 Snow Leopard Constant Kernel Panics

Before the Kernel Panics I was getting a lot of screen flickering and feezing. After my operating system Snow Leopard 10.6.8 was reinstalled and a new logic board put in I started getting Kernel Panics. Back to the Apple store and my computer went out for a new Logic Board, Graphic Card and Display and I am still getting Kernel Panics daily.  I purchased my MacBook Pro in March of 2011 and this all started in April. Below is my latest Kernel Panic report. Any ideas what is wrong with my computer?

There's usually a section that begins "loaded kexts." Maybe this log is formatted differently. Try disconnecting the Toshiba external USB hub. Have you installed any third party RAM? Even if not,  check the RAM by running a few loops of Rember.
EDIT: Oh, OK I'm seeing loaded kexts: com.AmbrosiaSW.AudioSupport! 4.0
Third party programs with kernel extensions can be a culprit. Try uninstalling that or seeing if there's an update.
But you needn't completely uninstall a program(s) suspected of creating these panics. This may not always work, but the worst that can happen is it will fail. Far better than completely uninstalling and reinstalling the full program, if it proves not to be the cause. Instead, you can temporarily disable a program. This may be especially useful when there are several suspects.
To temporarily disable/unload any .kext (kernel extension) which may be causing the problem, do the following: Open Terminal in Applications>Utilties and copy/paste
    sudo kextunload
Important, leave a space after kextunload
Next, navigate to the /System/Library/ and select Extensions. Inside that folder, find the related .kext in question, which you should drag into the Terminal window. (After dragging it in, the file will stay where it belongs in its original location.) This will automatically fill the Terminal window with the name and path to the file.
This is an example only of what the full command will then look like; it will not necessarily be found on your computer.
    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/
Hit return. If you have never used the sudo prefix before, you will get a warning, which you can disregard. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see on the screen as you type it in and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded. Then just close the window.
This will have the effect of disabling the program. If it fails to be the source of the problem, to reload/enable it, substitute kextload for kextunload, using the above procedure.
Other than that, have a look at this article on resolving kernel panics. Kernel Panics may be caused either by software or hardware. Faulty RAM is a frequent cause.

  • Yosemite 10.10.3 crashing daily

I got a Macbook Pro 13" mid-2012. After updating to 10.10.3 I started getting kernel panics daily.
Usually the system crashes while browsing the web.
Check my two logs out and let me know what might be causing the crashes, please.

  • BootCamp works fine, Parallels no US-Support, WMWare give Kernel Panics

    Hello
I am looking for a solution to get a virtual envoirement running on some mac.
We have some industrial applications connected over USB running with Windows XP Pro. Bootcamp is for us not usefull because we need mac and windows apps at the same time
    1) Installing it in BootCamp everthing works fine and the machines are able to communicate with the windows Software
    2) Installing Parallels 4 is possible. We see the machine with USB and load the drivers with Parallels is not able to communicate with the machine. We tried both, a clean windows install and a migration of the working bootcamp volume. Both without success (all patches and tools are loaded)
    3) Installing VMWare Fusion 2.01 works at the first impression. The Drivers are loaded The Apps are able to communicate with the machine but as soon as the Apps are closed it gives a kernel panics (any idea how to restart remotely??)
Also here we tried both, a clean windows install and a migration of the working bootcamp volume. Both without success (all patches and tools are loaded)
The developer of the machine only support windows and has no interest to debug and find a solution. BootCamp works so the Apps are OK for me.
The Support of Parallels is very bad. I bought a support ticket but no reactions within 24 hours. For VMWare I was to late to get support.
Does someone know of such a bug in VMWare or is this more a bug of OS X 10.5.6, The VMWare Fusion 2.0.1 is from the time OS X 10.5.5 was available. On the Support side of VMWare I doesn't find any solution regarding Kernel Panics
Who is able to help me?
    Regards
    Gérard

Brand new Macbook air. 10.7.3 . Random Kernel panics daily. Firefox, Word docs. opening sytem preferences, clicking on a link, just about anything crashes the system. Apple told me to take it to a local tech. He found nothing wrong with hardware. . Also shuts down (power off) after lid is closed on battery power. Did smc reset with no results. Computer is almost unusable for any real work.  we have three other macs with 10.6 that have never crashed in three years.  Lion has issues! Need fix

  • Panic errors

    Hi,
I have been experiencing recurring panic errors that require a hard reset for a few weeks now. I bought this iMac in October 2006 and had never experienced any problems with it until recently. It usually happens when I'm browsing the Web with Safari 3.0 but the one below happened when no application was open:
    panic(cpu 1 caller 0x00141505): zalloc: "kalloc.8192" (29973 elements) retry fail 3

Hope somebody can help me with this, it's literally driving me crazy

  • Lion kernel panics

This issue has been well documented since Lion was released, but I want to start a new thread on it anyway. It's more an open plea to Apple than it is for help.
With Lion 10.7.3 released last week, I thought I could finally upgrade my late 2008 MacBook to the latest OS. I had tried when Lion was released, I tried on the release of 10.7.1 and then I decided to hold off. Each upgrade has led to me rolling back to Snow Leopard. In my many years of using Mac, I NEVER experienced a kernel panic until I installed Lion.
This latest upgrade has been as equally unsuccessful. Within 2 minutes of restarting the OS for the first time, I received my first kernal panic. I find cutting and pasting kernel panics useless as they tell us nothing. I also feel sending them to Apple is now a waste of time as clearly, there is no response from them regarding the issues.
I'm tired of it. I have tried everything on the list of this post http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mchlp2890.html and it has made no difference. As it happens, my install has no "Hardware Test" (I've been restarting and holding D, or option + D for the past hour) and the idea that I need to create a boot disk to access it is a joke, so I've been unable to do that. On the otherhand, apart from a memory upgrade I did about 2 years ago which has worked fine on 10.6, I haven't made any hardware upgrades.
I have a feeling that the issue is related to the Nvidia graphics card based on what I've read online. I'm at a loss as to how to do anything with it.
I've invested a lot of money in Apple lately, with a 27 iMac and a 21.5 iMac in the house, on top of iPods and iPhones, so I feel like Apple's got what they want and the needs of the few really don't matter. It's sad when a company the size of Apple can treat you with such contempt. Steve Jobs didn't want people opening and messing with his products. Well Steve, you're not here anymore and your products (or more precisely, the support of your products) suck.
I don't expect answers from Apple, and the "have you tried... " responses that no doubt I will receive will not be ones I won't have tried (I've tried to resolve this issue solidly now, for the past 3 days).
My iMacs are all on Lion and all fine. I can only assume it's a hardware issue with the MacBook. I don't have the money to upgrade. Surely, Apple, you can't ignore (based on the 160 and 224 page forum posts I've found on this matter) this issue and you've GOT to give us, your customers who have this issue, SOMETHING? You can only ignore customers for so long.

Need fix

  • Any way to get prior (non-iOS 6) version of iMovie?

Just saw a demo of iMovie and really liked it. I headed to the iTunes app store and was seriously disappointed to find that I could only use iMovie if I updated to iOS 6. That isn't going to happen. I use Google Maps every day and will switch to an Android based system before I will upgrade to iOS 6.
So, is there any way to get the prior verion of iMovie that works on iOS 5.1.1 or is Apple just trying to force people to downgrade to iOS 6? My guess is the latter.
    Thanks
    David

@hpr : I was running the dev version because it provided a LOT more stability with Chrome/Flash (while I waited to receive my "free upgrade to mountain lion" email from apple), and it also addressed the Retina font-rendering issues. Latest official Chrome release was super crashtastic for me -- multiple kernel panics daily. Apparently this is/was An Issue for the new rMBP + Chrome + Flash. Honestly, though, this thing reboots so freaking fast it wasn't even *that* much of an issue.
Finally jumping to Mountain Lion right now...hopefully that'll stabilize things. If not, back to the dev version I go. Chrome has spoiled me - I just can't deal with Safari anymore.
@Justan : Yeaaaaah, I figured that out after I installed it. Ah, well.
