Red apple on startup

I noticed that when I upgraded to 10.9.3 that when powering on my MacBook Pro-retina, that the Apple splash screen is now flashing a red apple insted of the usual grey.
Is this normal? If not, what does it signify?
Thank you!

You're not alone. It's happening to my PowerBook Pro running 10.9.3, as well.
Anyone else seeing this change in startup behaviour after updating to 10.9.3?

Darran

  • Red logo on startup. Keeps rebooting

    This started this weekend.
Macbook Pro (late 2011) stopped waking from sleep when opening lid... No choice but to force a reboot.
Now on startup instead of the grey Apple logo I get a barred red apple logo. I see that for about a minute then the computer reboots and starts all over again.
it did this for hours on Sat then started working again out of the blue ... But seemed unstable (finder giving grief etc.)
It started up fine this morning at home, but when I got the the office... It started this process all over again.
    Has anyone else seen this?
Better yet... Any fixes for this nonsense?

  • Meaning of Red Apple during boot

Since I upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.3 on my Retina MBP I've intermittently gotten a red apple for a brief instant during boot! It then switches back to the normal gray. Is this an Easter egg, a bug or does anyone even know?!? This does not happen every time, but has happened several times...
    Thanks!

  • Intel Imac won't get past Apple on startup

One of our 17" Intel Imacs (early to mid 2006 model) will not get past the Apple on startup. I have done the following:
    1. Replaced the ram. No luck.
    2. Zapped the PRAM. No luck.
    3. Reset the SMC. No luck.
    4. Tried booting from several CDs including disk warrior. No luck.
    5. However, I was able to run the Hardware test from the system disk. It found no problems the several times I ran it.
    6. I was able to mount the drive using Target Disk mode. I then ran diagnostics on the harddrive. Fixed some things, but nothing major. Still won't boot.
    7. I tried the opposite approach and tried to run the machine using the other machine in Target mode. No luck.
    8. I downloaded firmware, created a disk per apple's instructions and tried to run it. No luck.
I think that is basically it. I've been able to backup all the data and was going to reformat the harddrive, although I don't see how that would work considering that the machine won't boot up from either a CD or another drive in Target Disk mode.
I'm thinking this machine is a goner. Any other ideas would be much appreciated.

Have you tried the diagnostics? Insert the original OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run extended diagnostics and not any error codes reported.
If you cannot boot into the diagnostics then take the computer in for service.

  • Red light at startup?

I've been busy setting up a refurb MacPro for over a week, between work and other commitments.  I'm also new to the MP and this morning on startup I noticed something new.  Well, new to me at least.  I'm using the CyberPower 1500 Pure Sine Wave UPS and when I left work Saturday I shut it off, as I have done occasionally in the past.  Not sure if this might be a contributing factor in what happened when I started up this morning.  I turned on the UPS and then the MacPro within a few seconds.  As I did this I noticed a flash of disturbingly bright red light which seemed to be emitting from inside the case and just above the power switch.  Since I first booted up the MP it has been performing flawlessly, but this morning it took forever to boot and once it did I had to shut it down with the power switch.  Tried again and the same thing happened, except that the red light was no longer visible.  The same procedure again and eventually it did start up, but very sluggish.  After two more tries I was finally able to shut it down properly.  I thought that perhaps the NVRAM had been comrpomised, but didn't want to persue that yet.  Again another 'proper' shut down and reboot.  Eventually the MP was again performing as expected, but I have no idea what might have caused this to happen. I then ran disc verification and that showed no problem.  Permissions showed three Library files that were problematic, so I ran a repair.  All seems well now, but I am concerned about what might have caused this.  I have two questions.
    1.  What does the red light at startup indicate exactly?  Obviously it can't be good, but at this point I'm at a loss.
    2.  Is it possible that I started the MP too quickly afetr turning on the CyberPower UPS?
Any replies would be much appreciated.

When you moved in January, how long was the Mac not connected to AC power? You could have a weak PRAM memory battery. Have you tried zapping PRAM? See Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial

  • IMac 2007 Rebooting to Grey and Red Apple Logo

    Hello
    Can anyone help?
My iMac 2007 Intel Mac is rebooting over and over to a red and grey apple logo, I am running Lion the iMac has been fine recently, I came into the living room and it was rebooting with the following screens, bizarre as it is red and grey.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing it?
    Many Thanks
    Shaun

Your machine is getting Kernel Panics. KP's can be caused by either hardware or software, in your case my best guess is a failed HD. I would recommend closely studying the X Lab's Kernel Panics article to begin troubleshooting it. However you may save a lot of time if you simply took it into your local Apple Store or AASP to have it professionally diagnosed. If you do make sure you make an appointment at the Genius bar for the fastest service.

  • K8N NEO Platinum 4 Red LED at Startup

I installed a new MSI K8N Neo Platinum mainboard in my computer in December 2005, and my computer has been a pain ever since. My problem is 85% of the time when I turn the power on it just won't boot up, I get 4 Red LED lights.  If I shut it off and on half a dozen to 20 times. During one of those times it will bootup normal and work great. Shutdowns are normal.
My Family hates this and won't use it. This computer has been nicknamed the MSI Little Witch.  I have had it down to barebones out of case with just graphic card, 1 memory stick, IDE harddrive, keyboard and mouse, it will do same thing.  I've unplugged and replugged everything countless times.  It still does it. I have tried Maxtor, Samsung, and Western Digital hard drives with fresh install of Windows XP Pro, it still does same thing.  I have alternated memory sticks, same thing.  It will warm reboot as long as I don't powerdown, but if I shut the power off it will not reboot until it cools down about 20 minutes.  Then I can go through the same startup problems as I normally have.  I have not done any overclocking.
Anyone have a fix to this fustrating problem?

I have the same problem with my K8N Neo Platinum.  Except mine seems to occur after the motherboard has not had power after sometime.  For example, it happened every time I moved my computer when I moved into and out of my dorm room.  I don't know if its the same "cooling down" time you're talking about, but what usually fixes it for me (at least temporarily) is killing the power to the machine while it is on.  Regular soft resets won't work for many tries, but when the computer is on with all 4 red LEDs i'll flip the power switch on the power supply.  That usually makes it work fine.  Also another thing that seemed to intermittently trigger it is changes to the BIOS.  A CMOS reset would not fix that either.  I would have to flip the power switch and kill the power.  Then after starting it
up again it would be okay.  I have also tried multiple combinations of different cpus, memory sticks, and video cards.  I also made sure there were no shorts to ground anywhere.
Also after a year of solid operation (with the exception of this problem) I started to get Machine Check Exception BSODs in XP.  I think this was because of a possible bad stick of RAM, because that seemed to cause lockups in the way beginning of the Windows setup (where it is loading files such as Windows Executive, etc).  When I removed it and put another stick in, the windows installation would go fine.  But, that did not fix the issue with this motherboard.
I've had so many problems with the multiple K8N Neo Platinums I have purchased.  This is absolutely ridiculous  I'm extremely POed at MSI for  the widespread K8N series problems.  I am usually very tolerant to companies when they have problems with products because I understand that problems and glitches can easily occur in mass production and design.  It is virtually impossible to make a "perfect" product from the start.  But the lack of response and concern from MSI about this is ridiculous.  MSI did make an excellent motherboard here--if you can get a working one.

  • Black Curtain during Apple/Spinner startup

I've been struggling with this for a few days, watching posts in this forum and trying things out, but nothing seems to work.
Upon startup, my PB gets the "Black Curtain" error message after a few seconds into the grey Apple screen with the spinner. What's odd is that it does this whether it is starting up from the internal HD or my Leopard disk, and when I tried booting a second machine from the PB hard drive in FW Target mode, it got the same error, though not when loading from the Leopard DVD in the PB drive.
I've managed to get it to start up in "Safe Mode", and that seems like progress, and I can start it up from the DVD in Safe Mode, but that didn't seem to be a lot of help. On another post's recommendation, I tried deleting the boot kernel extension thingy, assuming it was corrupted, to no avail. Because I had everything backed up the night before this started happening (THANK YOU TIME MACHINE) I have no fears for the data on the PB, so I tried completely reformatting the disk while reinstalling Leopard from the DVD in safe mode.
What has all of this gotten me? An essentially virgin install of Leopard on an empty disk that gives me the same error I've been getting this entire time. I fear that this is the logic board giving out, but it doesn't seem like the right symptoms, and I'm trying to exhaust every possibility before going to the Apple Store and plunking down my $319.
    Any suggestions?

    Macgregor Justice:
I gather, from your description, that you refer to a Kernel Panic. If you do a search you will find plenty of reading material.
There are two basic causes of KPs: software and hardware. Theoretically the reformat should take care of the software angle, although the ability to boot in Safe Mode raises questions in my mind.
From the hardware angle, I would not jump to the conclusion that it is logic baord. The Airport card is a frequent offender, as is RAM. I suggest that you begin by booting from the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with your computer, and running all tests in a loop by holding down Command + L during the tests.
    Good luck.

  • Apple Gray Startup screen changes color before going to desktop.

    Hey guys,
Since I upgraded my macbook air to lion last summer, the startup is a tad slower because the gray screen with the apple logo changes from a blu-ish gray to a yellow-gray before going to the desktop.  I do not have this problem on my iMac.  Anybody have any answers?
    Thanks so much!

I find this topic kinda funny. several answers and NONE of you guys mention that the spinning wheel is supposed to be there and completly normal, it appears on every mac and I'm 100% certain it appeared on your mac before as well.
the spinning wheel is supposed to be there, it's nothing to worry about it's the regular OS X boot up working indicator. it even appears on the new macbook airs with flash storage built in, where boot up takes about ... 8 seconds or something.

  • Awful static on apple tv startup

I recently purchased the apple tv (1080p version) to hook up in my room to stream music to my speakers.
I currently have the apple tv setup through hdmi to a computer monitor and optical to my receiver on my speakers.
Whenever i awake the apple tv from sleep i get an awful static noise coming through the speakers for 5-10 seconds.
On further investigation i realized the static cuts off as soon as the video signal (through hdmi) is received by the computer monitor. Thus when i startup the apple tv from sleep without having the computer monitor on the static lasts quite a bit longer.
All the cables are fine, it's not the cables that are the issue.
What has fixed the issue is if i completely unplug the hdmi cable from the apple tv thus leaving only the optical audio cable to the speakers.  When i did this i get no static, but i dont want to run to the device to plug in the hdmi whenever i feel like using the screen.
I called apple support and they were pretty unhelpful.  Anyone have any suggestions?
Sorry for the long write up, thanks in advance!

Have either of you guys tried configuring the ATV3 to use different audio settings? If you set it to a fixed output option, hopefully you would eliminate any glitches due to the negotiation implied by using HDMI, which could conceivably mess up the optical output, too.

you're right, wouldnt hurt for me to try ..
think it might have anyhting to do with the fact that the video cable is actually an hdmi - dvi cable?
probably not right?  just fishing for someting  !
Negative on the HDMI/DVI cable being a problem. HDMI is fully backwards compatible with DVI, and it's a straight through connection (no "converter" is involved) and cannot be an issue in and of itself. It's something that can be expected to work fine. What can be a problem are the usual problems associated with HDMI and cables in general, e.g. handshaking issues, HDCP and other incompatibilities, bad connectors, etc, along with other bugs in the connected devices. It could very well be your computer monitor is providing EDID info that the Apple TV doesn't like for whatever reason, or it could be a bug in the handshaking on one or both ends, etc, and it would still be a problem if your TV was HDMI, all other things being equal. This is very common in HTPC circles, and if you really want your eyes to glaze over, google /site:avsforum.com edid override/. This won't help you with the Apple TV, but it'll familiarize you with actual problems as you've already gotten some FUD about the DVI/HDMI cable and will almost certainly be receiving some more in this forum now that I've pointed it out. It's pretty much unique to this forum, so just ignore it.
In any case, if your intent is primarily to use the ATV as an Airplay bridge to your stereo, and you have an iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad, you might find the Remote App's 1' interface far superior to the ATV 10' interface for selecting music in iTunes. I know I do. Then you don't need to connect the ATV to your monitor except to change settings, which is essentially never, and you've already discovered that it doesn't produce static that way. That's the way I use my ATV2, and it's what I bought it for, but FWIW, it didn't produce static when I briefly connected it to my NEC monitor with a DVI/HDMI cable and optical to my receiver for testing after I made the mistake of allowing my ATV2 to update itself to 4.4. Maybe this is a new ATV3 problem or an iOS 5 problem. I wouldn't know, as I reverted to 4.3 back when it was still possible and won't update ever again as long as I'm using my ATV as a pure Airplay audio bridge and having no problems with it.

  • "odd" looking extension (what is it?) has red 'X' on startup

I've looked through extensions manager and can't find a match for an extension icon that has a red X through it on start-up. It is a 1/3-1/2 sized icon relative to the other extensions. It is grey and has what appears to be a three-pronged "outline" on it.
    What is this?
    How can I fix it?
    Thank you.
    B/W G3   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Hi, Samhillrocks -
Based on your brief description, that sounds like it may be this icon -
If so, that is a generic icon used for extensions having something to do with USB. I say 'generic', because it is used by Apple for more than one item, and is also used by some third-party software providers for their extensions.
The red "X" indicates it was prevented from being loaded for some reason.
The reduced size could indicate it is damaged, which would explain the occurance of the red "X".
If you can identify which it is, and if it is a normal OS extension, you can replace it with a fresh copy. You can use this utility TomeViewer to extract (expand) any files you want from an Installation Tome on an OS Install CD or download disk image, without running the installer.

  • Getting a Red "X" on startup screen (iPod Classic- 80 GB)

So it's been a while (3-4 years) since I last used my iPod Classic. But now when I wanted to start it up (after fully charging it), it 'greets' me with a Red "X". I saw the support thread for this issue, tried troubleshooting but to no avail. I've forced the iPod into 'Disk Mode' and tried connecting it to the computer (to restore the iPod) but as soon as I connect it, iTunes stops responding. My laptop detects the iPod (because I can hear the notification) but in My Computer I can't access the iPod (because when I try to do that Windows Explorer crashes). I tried reinstalling iTunes (current version- 11.1.4) but the problem still persists.
    Please Help!

    Hi wolfsblade,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in troubleshooting this issue. If you are continuing to get a red "X" on your iPod Classic, you may find the following articles helpful:

  • Apple at startup... but nothing else.

When I startup our Mac Mini server I get an apple logo. Eventually the gear appears underneath it and then all I'm left with is the apple logo again, and there it stays.
I've tried shutting down and restarting while holding down the d key. The results are the same.

The repair did not resolve anything.
An attempt to download the OS X Server software failed on numerous ocassions due to Apple's iTunes not accprting my Apple ID.5 calls to Apple Care did not resolve the issue. I figured out a workaround and we're back up and running, this morning!

  • Red light around startup button comes on

I'm almost afraid to ask this. I bought a used Quad about three months ago and it's been working just fine. Every since I got it a red light comes on behind the startup button for about 1 or 2 secs at startup and never any other time. Like I said, the computer works fine and I use it continually. Does this red light indicate some problem I may not be aware of, or some problem coming soon?

Thank you both. It is the #7 led that is flashing on startup. I also have a dual 1.8 Power Mac and it doesn't flash and that was why I was really concerned, but I see that these leds weren't featured until 2005 and my dual 1.8 is from 2003. Have a comfortable summer ahead.

You can view SMART status using the Get Info menu item in Disk Utility but sometimes it doesn't work for external drives (I don't know if a drive in another computer is considered external in this regard).
When you erased the drive did you try writing zeros once in security options?  This kind of stress tests the drive and will force it to have a look at all sectors rather than just saying it removed all reference to the files so the drive is fit and ready for use.
