Red circle with X through it after plugging ipod classic into computer?

My ipod classic is roughly 5 or 6 years old. It has worked great besides a few problems here and there. Today I plugged it into my computer and updated it on itunes. It had been a long time since I had done this. But generally the ipod works great! Shortly after unplugging the ipod (by ejecting it) a red cross with an "X" through it came on the screen after the music froze. PLEASE help!!! I use this everyday and it has tons of irreplaceable music on it!!! Thanks!

If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
For old and other versions of iPod updater for window you can get here
http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7369
F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
Intermediate Level
A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=501330&tstart=0
C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
Tips
a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

Advance Level
A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ or ifixit at your own risk
http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
http://www.ifixit.com/
Just in case that you are at the following situation
Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning !!!! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
Last Resort Level
1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times
Quote “This has been discussed numerous times as a 'fix'. It does work, at least for a while. In fact I remember using the same basic trick to revive Seagate and Quantam drives back in the mid to late 1980's. Why these tiny hard drives go bad I don't know - could be the actuator gets stuck in place or misaligned. Could be the platter gets stuck or the motor gets stuck. 'Stiction' was a problem for drives back in the 80's. Unfortunately the fix can cause damage to the platter so we temporarily fix one problem by creating another. But I know of two instances where a little slap onto the table revived the iPods and they are still worked a year or more later.”UnQuote

  • My mac will restart & show Blue Screen when plugged ipod classic into my mac

When i plugged ipod into my mac and i put to the Disk Mode my ipod , the computer will restart & don't let me to restore my ipod !!!! Please help and give me a solution !!!
My ipod & mac info :
    iPod Classic 160gb (2009)
    Mac Book Pro (2011)
    iTunes 11.1.3

If your computer is  a 2011, you can stop the blue screen by turning off graphic card switching.  Under apple, system preferences, energy, uncheck box.  Temporary fix.  Your logic board may need to be replaced if you are under warranty or have apple care otherwise $1000.00.  May be software or firmware problem but apple has provided no info.  Replacing logic board has corrected problem for some users and not others.  Everything I've mentioned only applies to 2011 MBPs.

  • Plugged iPod Touch into computer, lost music

I plugged my iPod into my computer to sync it, and I lost almost all my music.  They say they're in my iPod library, but come up faded with a red stop button within a circle for almost all of them.  I have no idea what to do.  I tried to re-add them to it, but it doesn't work at all.

It sounds like your Touch is set to auto-sync and it is set to sync as soon as you connect it to iTunes. Even if you log out of your BF's account and log into yours, you can lose the contents of your Touch if it tries to auto-sync to his library. You'd be prompted to back up purchased content on your Touch to his computer, but any non-purchased material would be erased.
My recommendation is to prevent the auto-sync and then change your Touch to manual management, that way it won't try to sync to your BF's library (thus erasing some or all of your contents).
To prevent the auto-sync in iTunes for Windows, start iTunes but do not connect your Touch. Press and hold the Ctrl and Shift keys as you connect your Touch -- *keep holding the Ctrl and Shift keys on the computer until you see your Touch show up in the left column of iTunes*. Once you see the Touch's name on the left, you can release the Ctrl and Shift keys.
Next, click on the Touch's name so that you see the big picture of the Touch in iTunes. On that page select the option "Manually Manage Music and Video" and then click the "Apply" button. That way your contents will not be erased.
You should now be able to safely connect your Touch to any iTunes library without losing its contents. At this point you can log out of your BFs account and log into yours if you want to buy stuff on your account, but that is optional. You can drag and drop stuff from your BFs library to your Touch without being logged into your account.

  • I get a red circle with a slash through it when trying to move music into folders.

I had to reformat my laptop hard drive.  I moved everything to an external hard drive, and then brought it back after the reformat.  I did something wrong, so all the folders are gone.  I can create new playlist folders now, but when I try to move the music over, as soon as I get in the area with the playlist folders, it gives me the red circle with the slash through it, and stops me form dropping the songs in the folders.
I am logged into my account and the computer is authorized to my iTunes.  Not sure where to go from here, other than the Apple store.

iTunes doesn't pay much attention to file and folder names with one minor exception. On import any untagged files will be given their filename as their track name.
You can drag a folder full of files onto a playlist and all the tracks will be added to the playlist, having first been added to the library if iTunes isn't already aware of them.
When you add files to iTunes from outside the iTunes Media folder and the option Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library is enabled then copies will be created, and iTunes connected to those. If you subsequently import the same folder you will create duplicate files. If your files start life inside the iTunes Media folder, or that option is disabled, then they can be imported again without creating duplicates. However, if your files start life inside the iTunes Media folder and the option Keep iTunes Media folder organised is enabled, then once you have added the folder to the library the files inside it will probably be rearranged.
In the long term your library will be easier to maintain if all the files are inside the iTunes Media folder. It is probably easier to let iTunes manage them unless you are really particular about the layout or are importing files without tags such as wav, in which case I have some scripts that can extract useful information about the file from the filename and path provided iTunes doesn't get to throw it away first.
If your main aim is to rebuild some existing playlists, which exist by dint of all the files for each playlist being in separate folders, and you want to avoid creating duplicates, then try this.
Create a new empty playlist, select the music folder and put it into date added order.
Move all the files into the Automatically add to iTunes folder.
Select all the recently imported files, drag and drop them onto the new playlist.
Repeat until all files are added

I am unable to add some songs to a playlist.  There is a red circle with a line diagnonally through it that appears when I click and drag to the new playlist.

That problem can be caused by the Yahoo! Toolbar or the Babylon extension that extents too much downwards and covers the top part of the browser window and thus makes links and buttons in that part of the screen not clickable.

  • HT5622 My Ipod Classic shows a red circle with a cross in the middle. I've completed diagnostic tests which have popped up, however any HP/FW/Hard Drive tests freeze the ipod, as if the hard drive won't spin. What do I do?

My Ipod Classic shows a red circle with a cross in the middle. I've completed diagnostic tests which have popped up, however any HP/FW/Hard Drive tests freeze the ipod, as if the hard drive won't spin. What do I do?
After holding down the Select and Play/Pause button, I was able to restart the Ipod and then it brought me to a Diagnositc test. I have tried doing both the Mannual and Annual test on the ipod however in each test, the ipod freezes on different access tests. The HP (headphones) test, shows the headphones are detected, but then if it tries to play a song to make sure they work it freezes and goes back to the red cross. I have looked at various other questions regarding the FW cable, however I don't believe i have such a cabel. Then the Hard Drive test freezes up and I can hear a ticking noise coming from the drive but it doesnt seem to be spinning. Alongside these test issues, any computer cannot see the Ipod when plugged in (including itunes). Therefore some tests for the USB drive cannot be completed. I do not recall dropping it badly, though I have dropped it previously. Does all this mean there is damage to the drive? Should I instead take it to an apple store?
    Many Thanks

The stats look fine. Try the DFU Restore method shown in Corrupt iPod classic. It may pay to disable any anti-virus software and use the staged transfer method to reload data, assuming you get that far.

  • Cannot send some attachments or pictures red circle with line (FIXED)

After three weeks working with support on an escalated ticket to find the resolution on some obscure site relating to something not specifically "Blackberry" I figured I should share.
    Problem:
Cannot send attachments larger than... Not sure of specifics but well bellow our Exchange Max settings.
Cannot send pictures as attachments. or forward some emails with embeded images
Both cases would result in a red circle with a horizontal bar.
    Our environment:
    Exchange 2010
    IIS 6.0
Blackberry (All up to date) devices connected to BDS
After 3 weeks of sending logs and trying settings here is what I found on the internet:

I will let you read the above but essentially the data BDS is trying to push through IIS is too large for the cache (from what I can tell). Finally here are the changes I made to our IIS applicationhost.config file (copy paste to the bottom bellow the last tag). I am certain the number is still very high but I want to make sure there is no more issues. I have enough users wanting to jump ship already, I don't want more.

I don't 100% know because we run all roles on one Exchange server.
I referred to Exchange server in my previous post presuming you were running the CAS role on the Exchange server. If you have that running on another server, I would change it on there as well.
Again, I can't see it doing any harm even if it isn't required!

  • Red Circle with a Red Square in it?

    Hello Community
After ios 7 update everything has basically gone horribly wrong.
Is anyone else getting these red circles with the red triangle in their songs list when selected to play? Some songs play while others just dont play then it skips to the next song that will. When i press the red circle, nothing happens except the colour goes to opaque.
My itunes was working perfectly well before update.
So So So not a fan on this update.  What the **** are apple doing! Update on Iphone 4 has a terrible lag to everything so thanks for that apple.  & i really shouldnt have to fork out money for a new phone just so i can have the privalege of have the update working...in todays society we should be keeping our technology as long as we can and not adding to the landfill with perfectly working phones but just crappy updates that force you to buy a new phone that can handle the update, which you really dont have a choice but to update...STOP trying to fix things that arent broke APPLE.
& another thing, we should have the choice (you remember freedom of choice, dont you Apple) whether or not to use icloud, maybe i like my privacy, as i am sure most people do.  Now you have everything geared towards icloud! what happens when you guys get hacked & then those hackers have access to everyones stuff. (sorry for being a drama queen, but anything is possible!).
I spoke to apple customer service, very helpful young lady, got me to uncheck all music sync then sync again, thought it worked but apparently not. I will try it again and post if it works.
The young lady said a lot of issues like this one have been occuring due to update, but she was not familiar with this particular issue but had noticed a lot of people have been posting on support about it.
Please figure this out Apple and go back to making your technology user friendly.Please.

    hi karen piano girl
1st of all how crap is it spending sooo much time fixing things that were not broke in the 1st place...
My problems only occurred after i installed iOS 7.0.3 update.
& the really weird thing about all this is that the update didnt affect the music on my iphone 4, just made it slow.
Just a quick question, are all your songs playing perfectly in itunes on your computer?  I have a mac running OS X 10.9. Mine were, so this is what worked for me.  I know you said you have tried re syncing but I'm going to go through it anyway, because it seemed to work for me.  All my songs now play on ipad without red circle & squares and skipping songs that looked greyed out & dont play.
I definately think this is an icloud issue.  The songs that didnt play after the iOS 7.0.3 update were specifically CD's that I had imported to itunes and other songs I had downloaded from other sources, not itunes...songs from itunes however were not affected by this update.
If this doesnt help you, i really suggest you call apple, thats what i did, just go to the Contact Us section (could be down the bottom of the page, i filled out a contact form, gave them my number, and pretty much in minutes I got a call from apple, granted she didnt know what the problem meant, but she was helplfull all the same.  So if this doesnt work, call them.
    Ok, heres what i did.
When you hook your ipad up to the computer via usb, select your ipad from devices in left panel in itunes, select music from top tab (summary, apps, music, movies,tv shows, books, photos), uncheck the tick in Sync Music box. (i know its basic stuff, but sometimes I stuff basic stuff up).
It asks you are you sure you want to do this because it will wipe all songs off your ipad.
Click remove, then click Sync or Apply down in the right hand corner (i cant remember which it is, Sync i think) Anyway, you have to sync to get all your songs off your ipad to start again.
This then goes through the proccess of wiping ALL your music from your ipad.  When its finished, eject from computer, & check your ipad that it has wiped your music off, if there are some songs on there (which happed to mine, i really dont know what that was about) thats fine.
re connect ipad to computer, then go back to top tab and check Sync Music box (Entire Music Library selected too.) Then click Sync or Apply down in right hand corner and that should get your music back on to your ipad.  Depending on how much music you have it could take a bit of time.  I have close to 7000 songs so it took some time.
I know this all sounds very basic and step by step & I promise you I am not trying to be condescending or anything.  I have used macs, ipads, iphones for many years and all these updates & icloud dramas are really doing my head in.
I hope this helps & if it doesnt call Apple.

  • What does a red circle with a stop (square) in it mean next to a song on your iphone?

HI, i just updated both my itunes and my iphones to the newest update relased on 10/23/2013. as i was updating it, my phone said there was an error and i had to restore it, terible huh? it gets worse. I synced all my music back into my phone, but next to each song there was a red circle with a stop sign in the middle, i clicked on the song and it just skipped to the next song. what does it mean ??

    Here is what I tried.
1)Plug your phone into your computer and let it sync
    2) Go through your songs and fast forward through each and everyone of them on your phone, that way all the ones that wont play will have stop signs next to them.
    3) Then go into intunes and go to "file" then "devices" then click transfer purchases from "..."
That's what I did and it helped
