RED Color Space

Hi,
I'm having issues determing the correct Color Space for my RED footage. I set the project color space to HDTV Rec 709. I bring the footage into the project, I interpret the frame rate from 23.98 to 29.97, then I Add to Render Queue. I set the Render Color Space setting to HDTV Rec 709 as well. And when its done, the final quicktime is close but slightly different colors than the original.
I've tried doing the same with color management turned off. The codec I'm trying to export to is DNxHD.
If I take the same original RED file and bring it into Avid Media Composer at DNxHD resolution, the colors stay the same. But I need to use After Effects for the frame rate conversion. How can I get After Effects to keep the colors the same when converting to DNxHD please?

1. Make sure your AE project is set to 32 bit.
2. See this thread on exporting to DNxHD in MOV container out of Adobe Suite.
3. Keep in mind that DNxHD is literally for 1080 and 720 only.

It helped me solve my issue, I increased the size of the files as recommended and their status in DB02 changed to green.

What color space does Adobe's Cinema Display have?

I just calibrated my Macbook Pro with a Spyder3Elite and got a bit desapointed when I descovered that the best color space it can show is sRGB. After finding this, and since I've been thinking about buying an iMac for a while, I got a bit frightened. Thus, I changed my atention to Adobe's Cinema Display in hope that it has a larger color gamut.
The thing is I can't seam to find anyone that can tell me what color space does this displays can produce, iMac nor Cinema Display. If there's anyone who has already calibrated any of these displays, can you tell me what's the best color space they can work on?

Ok, I'll try to be clearer to the best of my abilities.
1st off, There are 2 kinds of color spaces. Device-dependent and device-independent. Hence, a display has a limited color gamut that it can produce, it has it's own color space.
When I calibrated mine, this was the result:
Purple: Adobe RGB 1998
Green: sRGB
Red: Display's Gamut
The thing is, before I calibrated my monitor, I thought it had an Adobe RGB 1998. Got pretty desapointed when I found out it didn't... Nevertheless, what I'm looking is to know if there's any Apple display with a larger gamut than the one from my Mac or if they're all sRGB...

my doubt is that in that screen current fill level is in red color what does it mean is this is Error case or may be another reason.

so in that case there is some space is there in the table so why it is showing RED COLOR

Strong red color cast over some images, solved

Hi,
This issue was driving me nuts recently, but having just found the solution I thought I'd share in case anyone else runs into the same issue.
From one day to the next, my Mac (late 2013 MBP retina, Mavericks) suddenly started to display some (not all) images with a red semitransparent overlay.
This would occur most often in Apple applications like Finder, Preview, Safari, Mail etc.
In the Finder's icon view with a folder full of images, some thumbnails would have the color overlay, some others wouldn't. When resizing the thumbnails the overlay would flicker on and off on various images randomly.
Affected images would also print with the same color cast on a color printer.
The Solution
After a lot of trial and error I found that the issue was caused by a custom libpng library, installed by Homebrew (http://brew.sh).
It was probably installed much earlier than this this issue started, maybe the library was updated that day, or something in OSX was updated triggering an incaompatibility leading to this issue.
I'm not sure why I installed this library in the first place, most likely as a dependency needed by another recipe I since uninstalled. I could uninstall it without issues.
Caveat: to fully uninstall a recipe, use:
brew uninstall <recipe> --force
in my case I did:
brew uninstall libpng --force
Otherwise Homebrew will reinstall the library the next time you upgrade your brew installation (which is most likely what happened in my case).

Thanks for the explanation of this subject. Anyway ... there are quite a number of possibilities that something is clipped during whole process. First, some channels can be clipped off at the sensor level, than after matrix conversion to RIMM, than if EV slider is used (and even if it isn't, because there is baseline exposure value) ... or Saturation slider ... then after correction using LUT ... and finally during conversion to sRGB / AdobeRGB / whatever ... maybe some sort of soft clipping at some of these points would be better (just my opinion)
However, there is another highlight issue I noticed, illustrated with these two samples (Canon 400D, ACR 5.7, windows platform)

Left picture has all default settings. On the right picture, everything is the same, except that I made a small patch with adjustment brush tool at the top left corner (far from the center of the picture) and changed exposure value of the adjustment brush to a nonzero value (other adjustment brush sliders don't produce similar strange effect). Appearance of the area of the Sun changes abruptly and looks strange. Test with my HSV image from previous post shows that all colors are affected (not only yellow)
Also, there is a similar abrupt change in the highlight behavior if I lower the global EV slider from -0.25 to -0.30 (0.25 is baseline exposure value for this camera), or if I raise Recovery slider from 6 to 7 (which seems to have similar effect). I think these two issues are unrelated to clipping in sensor color space vs. RIMM

Color space distance

Is there're a built-in function in the AE sdk, that calculates the distance between two pixels, ie ||P1 - P2|| or (||P1 - P2||)^2. I see functions for calculating luminance, saturation etc, but nothing for pixel distance in the color space.

as per your question, there is not such function.
there's the transfer mode "difference" where you can composite two buffers and get the difference, but nothing that takes two pixels and gives the difference.
it is, however a very simple function.

Where does Lightroom display color space?

Where does Lightroom display color space assigned to an image? It should be in the metadata panel. In Bridge it displays Color Mode: RGB/B&W and Color Space: sRGB/Gray Gamma 2.2. Or does Lightroom convert everything to Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB?

LR's internal working space is a variation of the ProPhoto RGB space, ProPhoto RGB's gamut but with a linear tone curve instead of the standard gamma 1.8 curve. This is because it is primarily a Raw editor and Raw sensor data is linear and because the ProPhoto gamut will more or less include all the colors most digital cameras can capture (depending on the filters in front of the lens, some cameras may capture ultra-red that is outside ProPhoto RGB). Retaining the linearity of the data makes editing calculations easier, faster, more flexible and more accurate since data has not been lost to the quantization errors involved in gamma correction. So for a Raw file the workflow is the assignation of the camera profile and conversion from that to linear ProPhoto RGB. However, the display data from the Develop module (the data sent to your monitor) undergoes a further conversion that involves the application of the sRGB tone curve, which is sort of gamma 2.2 but not exactly. This is because linear image data looks terrible - very dark and flat. Thus, the display is in a hybrid space called Melissa RGB, ProPhoto primaries and sRGB tonal response curve. At the time of export or printing a conversion is done from linear ProPhoto RGB to the output space designated by the user, which can be any RGB space - ProPhoto RGB, Adobe RGB, sRGB or any other one, provided you have an ICC profile for it in your OS's Color folder..
Previews used by the Library module are jpgs in the Adobe RGB space.

I'm definately no guru, but this is how you can change it.
CTRL + ALT + Click on the part of the component that you want to change. This brings up the Hidden Dom Inspector, background of component will be surrounded with a red outline (Make sure the red outline is surrounding the part of the tabset you want to change), Now you go to properties sheet and click the ellipses next to rules property this will pop up a dialog you look in this list (At the top) to see the default style classes that are affecting the rendering of the component outlined in red. (You will be able to select different sections of a single component) then you just rewrite the style class that you want to change in your Stylesheet (You will not find the styleclass that you want to change because it is a part of your theme .jar but as long as you name it exactly the same and place in your stylesheet it will override the theme .jar style classes) it's actually very easy -- you were right should be a piece of cake for a guru. Don't have the link handy but you can check out Winston's Blog on changing Table Formatting to get this information...It is EXTREMELY useful if you want your apps to have a custom look and not default that comes with Creator Themes.

Red Color Cast when printing with Canon Pixma Pro 9000

My printer is giving me a horrible red color cast after the latest software update. The color cast can also be seen in Preview and in the print window. No changes to drivers have been made. Printer worked fine before the update.
Has anyone else found this problem and offered a solution?

Thanks, but if you look in the archives of the Apple ColorSync Users List, you'll find thousands of posts from his Mac dating back to the beginning of the List.
The principle is that you configure your device colour spaces to the largest gamut of which they are capable, calibrate them to a stable condition, characterise that condition in a measured test chart, and build ICC device profiles for those characterisations in your ICC profiling package of choice.
You then capture and correct colour with correct colour previews, resulting in normalised exposures in an ideal CIE colour space. With you normalised exposures, you convert into output condition 1, output condition 2, output condition n which is what repurposing is about.
But you do no apply a gamma change on top of the colour managed rendering. That is incorrect by definition. You apply your gamma change as part of the colour correction in order to get your normalised exposure.
If you imagine this in a prepress process, then you can forget the concept of determinate rendering which is the bedrock of the ICC architecture. If you as photographer do a gamma correction on top of your presentation print or proof print, then you can claim that you have a presentation print, but you cannot contractually claim that you have a proof print as your proof print is a colour correction on top of the colour management system. If Apple Aperture allows the user access to colour correction on top of colour management, then that is a bug in the application. Sorry ...

Grey colored space on right and bottom of Flex application

I have a flex application that is integrated with SAP WD to be used as Flash Island.
Yesterday I upgraded my Flash player from version 10_ax_debug to version 10.2.159.1.
Since then I am getting grey colored space on right and bottom of application.
Can you please tell me how do I get rid of it?

Recommended color space to use with my D50

Hi -
I'm pretty new to Mac and I'm now finding time to work with digital photos taken with my Nikon D50. Having read up on some things, I realize Mac OS and iPhoto can match the color space of the imported photos as an attempt to keep colors consistent between camera, computer, and eventually the printer. I was wondering what is a recommended color space to use when shooting. Nikon offers 3 choices - IIIa ( sRGB with a boost to green ), Ia ( sRGB ) and II ( Adobe RGB ). I believe their IIIa is my default and I have not changed it. I've noticed, however, that when I took a picture of my daughter in her prom dress outdoors in natural sunlight, it rendered it's magenta color as more red than magenta. Would Adobe RGB be better ? I read some articles here on color and I believe somewhere in the article it said the Adobe RGB color space has a broader color gamut than sRGB.
Any opinions ?

I don't have a Nikon (I use Sony's) and I find my cameras output matches up well with sRGB. iPhoto seems to use sRGB as well. Adobe RGB comes up very saturated, too saturated for my taste. When I use Adobe. I set Adobe to sRGB as well.
Magenta is a tough color and many fabrics reflect infrared and/or uv band and some camera sensors can pick that up. You may find the same effect with flowers.
Gamut depends more on where you plan to output the images. A broader gamut is not always the best thing for displays but may work well for printing. Personally I find sRGB works well for me.

A RAW digital image in its pure form is a matrix of B&W data captured through red, green and blue filters, and really does NOT have any true color until we render it using a RAW converter. When you set the color temperature, tint, contrast, brightness, etc, you are instructing the RAW converter to convert and 'dematrix' the file, and while doing so, make sure that the file is rendered in color as an sRGB, Adobe RGB, ColorMatch RGB or Prophoto RGB file.
So, if you choose ProPhoto RGB as your space in ACR, the conversions will be made to fit your file's data into the ProPhoto editing space, using the endpoints, color temp, etc, and other adjustments you made in ACR. When it arrives in Photoshop, it
IS a Prophoto RGB file...period. At that point, you can choose to convert to another profile if you wish, or leave it in ProPhoto. Assigning another profile at that point will change the colors, which is usually not the desired result.
Most images don't need ProPhoto RGB and come nowhere near needing its extended gamut. Converting a typical CMYK to ProPhoto RGB is usually silly, since the CMYK file has a VERY limited gamut. Usually Adobe RGB or sRGB is more than adequate. Even if these spaces clip a few colors, they are rarely noticeable. Most monitors cannot display the full Adobe RGB space, and most output devices are smaller than Adobe RGB, though some colors lie marginally outside ARGB.
I'm really not sure what you are trying to accomplish. Personally, I am not a proponent of ProPhoto, and never use it for editing. Others do, and that is fine, as long as they are knowledgeable and work in 16 bit. The only time I do use it is as an intermediate space when converting a file from ACR, and only on a handful of images. As soon as that file arrives in Photoshop, I immediately convert to PhotoGamut RGB if I need extended gamut for printing. To each his own. But normally, I find that sRGB is adequate for about 75% the files I print, and with very few exceptions, the remainder are adequately covered by using Adobe RGB. So, I generally use those spaces when converting in ACR. Those files arrive in PS as srgb or adobe rgb files.
I don't know if that explains things or not, but hopefully it is a bit clearer.
I certainly hope this doesn't degenerate into a discussion of the pro's and con's of ProPhoto vs other editing spaces. We've beaten that to death.

Spyder makes the color space too small

Hello,
I just bought a NEC MultiSync LCD2690WUXi monitor which has a fairly large color space. Then I made a monitor profile for it using the spyder2pro. There is also an original icm profile for the monitor which I downloaded on the NEC website, and this one is distinctly larger than my spyder-made profile. I was looking forward to having a monitor which can display 95% of the Adobe RGB color space, but once I calibrate the monitor the profile doesn't even cover the sRGB space, it's simply too small.
I saw the difference on a website called iccview.de (unfortunately it's in German) where you can upload your profiles and compare them to standard profiles in form of 3D graphics.
Without calibrating the monitor at all I could see a lot of amazing colors, but it was also definitely too saturated and unbalanced, ecpecially in the reds. So does this mean you have the choice between a large color space but colors out of control on the one side - and well-balanced colors but smaller color space on the other? Is the spyder to blame?
I use Windows XP Home and a GeForce 6600 GT.

The color matrix for that device probably doesn't expect to be looking at a wide gamut display and producing issues in measurements. Also, NEC doesn't recommend this instrument (yes I know, the software supports it).

Strangely muted color space?

I'm working on an applet, which renders a lot of very high-saturation lines. On the screen, and in the simulator, it's gorgeous. I added a feature to render to the photo album.
The images come out ALMOST the same -- but colors are all strangely muted. So, for instance, a red which was (255, 0, 0) when I tried to render it, ends up being quite dim. (I'd know exactly how dim, but the resulting pictures are imperceptible to aperture, itunes, or anything else -- nothing can sync them off the phone, even though they show up in Photos on the phone. So are all the other pictures on my phone, except for one of them, and I can't tell what's different about it.)
I'm using CreateDeviceRGBColor(), and I suspect that's wrong, but I can't figure out what I should be using.
What's the color space for "shut up and give me the set of bits I requested"? I don't want any attempt at color correction; if I specify red 1.0, blue 0.0, green 0.0, I want 255,0,0. Exactly. I don't care whether it looks good on a given display.

It looks like this is just a difference in antialiasing in some way -- if I make a larger image and draw thick lines, they come out right. But for some reason, I get VERY different behavior rendering to screen than I do rendering to an image buffer.
