Red CPU and Slow Macbook Pro

My macbook pro has been running super slow for the past 4 months . Whenever I go to the activity monitor I find the CPU screen full of red lines, I have many applications that I don't know know running and I try to quit or force quit them but it doesn't work with all of them (I choose the ones under my username).
Then the CPU screen suddenly gets black and my computer gets fast again for a while (like an hour or less) then gets slow again. Is my macbook infected with a trojan or what could be really going on ?

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Monitor the activity so you might note what is hogging CPU time when the computer becomes sluggish.

  • Kernel_task is using more than 250% of CPU and My Macbook Pro (13 inch i7 8gb Ram Mid 2012) is getting heated, when ever running Facetime or Games.

When ever i try to use FaceTime or Counter Strike GO my CPU gets more than 250% usage and my mac gets really slow.. This is the same when ever i try to run any middle end applications not extreme ones. Tried googling and apple support communities uninstalled all my 3rd party softwares. any help??

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below is a partial list of causes for this condition.
    Thermal overload
This can be due to accumulation of dust, high ambient temperature, or to the malfunction of a cooling fan or temperature sensor. The kernel tries to compensate by throttling back the CPU's. You might see messages like the following in the Console window:
    SMC::smcHandleInterruptEvent WARNING status=0x0 (0x40 not set) notif=0x0
The timestamps of those messages (if any) indicate the times, since the log was last cleared, when a processor was being throttled because of high temperature.
Note that if the problem is caused by a faulty sensor that reads too high, there may be no actual overheating.
The Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or temperature sensor.
    Using Apple Hardware Test
    Encryption
Transferring large amounts of data to or from an encrypted disk image or FileVault volume puts an extra load on the kernel. If both the source and the destination are encrypted, the load may be doubled. If you transfer data from an encrypted disk image on an encrypted partition to another such image on another encrypted partition, the load may be quadrupled.
This issue probably doesn't affect late-model Macs with an Intel i-series, recent Xeon, or later processor. Those processors support hardware-accelerated encryption. You can determine what kind of processor you have by selectingAbout This Mac from the Apple menu in the menu bar.
    Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility bycompletely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or booting in safe mode (with the shift key held down at the startup chime.) Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or booting in safe mode may not be as easy as you think it is.
    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
In some cases the issue has reportedly been resolved by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.

  • Any DVD I rent from the red box or at the library my 27"iMac and my MacBook Pro will not operate.

Any DVD I rent from the red box or at the library my 27"iMac and my MacBook Pro will not operate.  The Mac's take the DVD's and it sounds like it's trying to run the DVD.  After about 10 seconds the Mac just spits it out.  I am using the newest version of the Beta Yosemite OS X 10.10.3 Version.  I'm a little more than a novice user, just to keep in mind... Can anyone help me fix this problem?

Aside from running the beta (and not being allowed to discuss anything at all about it anywhere including these forums), I have found that some commercial DVDs (and actually also music CDs) are coded such that they will not play in any device that could ostensibly be used to copy the content due to DRM/copyright issues. The DVDs played just fine in both of my DVD players hooked up to my TVs and the music CDs worked in my stereo system.
Have you tried to play those in a regular DVD player?

  • Slow Macbook Pro- please help, I don't understand previous advice.

    Hello all,
I have a very slow Macbook Pro running on Lion 10.7.3.
I looked up this problem on the forums before I sent this message but I didn't quite understand the advice. I have been on something called Disk Utility and Activity Monitor but don't really understand what I'm looking for. It seems a large percentage of my mac is 'idle' if that makes sense. Someone said to look at Page Out but I really don't understand what that means and what sort of numbers are normal.
I do have some storage left so I don't think it could be that. A lot of my gigabytes seem to be taken up by movies and 'other'. I've tried deleted a load of videos but it hardly made a difference. I have Mac Mail and it seems very slow on my Macbook compared to on my Ipad and iphone. iCal is also very slow on here and it always takes a while to load internet pages. It isnt the wifi connection.
Please help and bear in mind I am by no means a Mac whizz so you might have to talk in layman's terms!
    Thanks,
    Amy

If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
    Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “kernel.log” from the file list. Post the dozen or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.

You have only about 10 percent free drive space left. 50gB is enough to run the computer but, if it gets much smaller, that can slow how Virtual Memory (VM) works as the system has to more carefully search the remaining space for qualified blocks to which to write data.
Adding RAM will reduce the writes-to-disk by VM but you should probably consider a little holiday disk cleaning of stuff you no longer use.
    This concerns me:

That is a LOT of log-in items for a compute with 4GB RAM. Some are hard to avoid but Excel is a big program that can be easily launched from the Dock. I don't know what "Inspiration 8" is but likely the same advice will apply.

    BDAqua,
    Thanks for the response.

Yes, I could connect them by ethernet if all I wanted to do was transfer files, but I would like to network them so I could use wireless internet.  The machines are not always so close together, I did that to simplify the testing.  With the very slow transfer speeds I am reluctant to move ahead with the internet step.

  • Slow Macbook Pro - any options?

    Problem description:
slow macbook pro.  everything works, just slower than christmas 1985…slow.
I've looked through several posts searching for my solution, not sure how to test my memory - may be my problem - that and i'm only running 2GB RAM.  I'd go upgrade that tomorrow if that would fix my issue.
also, battery seems to not last like it should, even after replacing the battery.
Any solutions or options for me?
    Thanks crew -

Hi Gary, I may have a simple solution for you, and hope it's not too late.
    Try to uninstall AppTrap !
I have a MacBook Pro 15" with 16GB RAM and two SSD in it. So it can't be slow But recently I saw that my CPU was hot (70-75°C) and fans were spinning even with all apps closed. Same problem with the battery shorter than ever. In Activity Monitor I saw that AppTrap (that you have too) was taking 2,88GB of my RAM… So I disabled it on the pref panel and uncheck launch at start, and I quitted it in the activity monitor. My CPU becomes cool again (40°C) and fans stopped instantly.
I really hope this will help you !

  • Kernal_task is taking up 300% CPU on my macbook pro while on battery

Kernal_task is taking up 300% CPU on my macbook pro while on battery, but goes back to normal while it's plugged into power source.  Battery life is still normal.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I just received my MBP Retina yesterday. I have not installed anything and the system is running so slow that when I type the text on the display is lagging behind my typing. Scrolling, app switching, etc. are all either choppy or I have to wait. Activity monitor shows kernal_task %CPU jumping between 500% to over 600% with 83 threads and about 675MB real memory. The fan is on continously, does not matter if it's plugged in or on the battery. NOT A GOOD FIRST TIME EXPERIENCE FOR ME.

  • Extremely slow macbook pro performance

I have a 4GB Macbook Pro 13 inch, less than 1/2 the memory is in use.  Computer startup can take up to 10 minutes, and opening any app can take 1-2 minutes.  Apps are constantly stalling, and Safari is constantly showing the spinning wheel of doom.  It's running OS X 10.9.5.  It's at the point where my iPhone is a much better option that using my Mac.  Any suggestions on speeding it up?  I used to have MacKeeper on it, but the Genius Bar at the Apple store told me the uninstall it, as it often can cause a slow performance.

  • Yet again slow MacBook Pro

    Hey guys,
so I basically fixed my slow MacBook Pro about 2 weeks ago and it worked fine, but as of a about a week ago its just back to being just as bad as it was before and I can't seem to find any solutions.
    I'm using a MacBook Pro 4GB DDR and 2.53GHz 2 Duo running on Mac OS X 10.5.8.
I've already looked for spikes in console and Activity Monitor and nothing to be found there other than a rather slow Firefox and generally slow Browsers.
I've deinstalled Akamai but it's apparently still on here and still running Errors but I can't erase it with just the console erase commands.
    Heeeelp please

Especially Firefox and Safari but Pages and iTunes are starting to run slow too, and by running slow I mean the applications are starting up way slower than before and aren't running as smoothly anymore (kinda choppy page opening, recent crashing and non-responsivenes).
Nope I tried it on 3 different internet connections and two of them were the highest connection rates available here in Germany so not the connection.

  • How can I check the temperature of the CPU in the MacBook Pro retina

I want to check the temperature of the CPU in my MacBook Pro retina, but I can't find an application to do this. Is it even possible to do this?

I would find Marcel Bresink's Temperature Monitor more trustworty, as he has just updated the code and explicitly states compatibility with all 2012 models:  http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
I have just downloaded the "Marcel Bresink's Temperature Monitor"/
You are correct, it does give a more accurate reading.
