Red Exclamation point says...

Question

Modem works, TC was checked out. My TC is connected to a Motorola modem via Ethernet cable. I can access the Internet wirelessly only if  the TC is factory reset)  fresh- with no password but I dont want this. But when I rename the TC and create a password when it prompts me, I get this error message:  "IP Configuration 192.168.1.164 in use by 00:24:36:a1:97:78, DHCP Server 192.168.1.254
the Internet is gone as well.
Please help!

You have somewhere in your network a second dhcp server.
Or whatever you are trying to do with the TC.. cannot be done with it in circuit so to speak. And I don't know what you are trying to do. Renaming the TC.. should not be an issue.
Let me suggest the following course.
1. Remove the TC from connection to the modem.. plug it into a single computer by ethernet. So you have computer.. and TC.. and nothing else. Turn off any other network connection in that computer.. wireless etc. You now should have one IP address from the TC..
2. Now do whatever it is you want to do to the TC.. and save it. Then put it back into the network with its fresh shiny new setup.
3. What I hope you are doing is turning off NAT in the modem.. bridging by whatever means.. and using the TC as router. If that is not what you are doing and the above doesn't work post again.
This is what I wrote.. or some it when my brain was in slow mode. It still might have some use.

The device that is giving you grief I suspect is another modem in the network.. you have a Thomson speedtouch somewhere. Unless the Motorola is now using identical dhcp values. But that is the MAC address of the offending device.. go around and look at each device in turn and find its MAC address.. on a Mac computer (don't mix up MAC and Mac) I have carefully used all caps for MAC.. ie Media Access Control address. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_address
On a Mac computer you can find its MAC address in the terminal, just type ifconfig and the various network devices will pop up.

You can then compare the network address with the bad one.. !!
But find the DHCP server, 192.168.1.254 because it is that which is giving you the grief.
