Red eye problems

Hi I'm new to this forum and an absolute beginner so please bear with me.
I would like to ask if anybody has a solution to the following problem.
I am working with Adobe Premier Elements 9 on a 2010 iMac running Mac OSX 10.6.8.
I always have a problem with the eyes of my Siamese cats. They have beautiful blue eyes with the usual black iris. Under flash photography they turn completely pink. Not red but pink. I have tried correcting this using the red eye reducter but it really looks terrible. Giving just a black blob on the eye, making it look dead. In one case the black dot even refused to stay on the eye and instead jumped to my wifes red finger nail. She is holding the cat.
Any ideas gratefully received and will be tried.
Thanks in advance.
John.

John,
You are correct in that feline (and canine) eyes show up differently on film (or digital), than do human/primate eyes.
There was a tutorial, or at least a long discussion on the Photoshop forum, from some years ago, on how best to "recreate" the feline eyes, but I cannot find the one that I recall (my memory is just getting too cloudy, sort of like the eyes on my older Bulldog... ). I looked over the tutorials on Dr. Brown's Web site, and did not see what I was looking for, but it might be tucked away, or perhaps in an archive. Dr. Brown does so many great tutorials, and those often change a bit, as Photoshop evolves (new Tools, and new features), that one might have to dig more deeply.
I would also post the question to the Photoshop Forum, and just not mention that you have Photoshop Elements, as some of the younger folk there (with better memories, than mine), will likely furnish you with a link, and tips (that can be easily translated to PSE). If you mention PSE in the post, too many will likely just recommend that you post to that forum, without considering the problem fully. I know that the tutorial/discussion was in the Photoshop Forum, but could not locate it.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Red eye problem

    hi all,
I've used the red eye tool to fix 3 red eyes in a photo. 2 of them are fine. with 1 of them, it looks fixed in the normal view, but when I hover the loupe over it, it's still red.. more importantly, when I export a jpeg or other version, the red eye isn't fixed.
    any ideas what's going on?
    thanks in advance..

    Thanks Tony.
while it seemed to me that I had managed to get rid of the redeye properly in the master, and it was only showing in subsequent versions - I did start again and this time had no problem.
I can only assume I hadn't done it correctly.
Will see if it ever happens again.

  • Red eye problem gone

Just thought I would point out that the newest iPhoto patch has finally corrected the problem of photos syncing over to the iPhone in the original, uncorrected, red eyed form.
Now when you sync from iPhoto, any photo you removed the red eye from will also show the red eye correction on the iPhone.
    Yay Apple!

An Apple update has resolved this issue.

  • Cs3- red eye problems

I am trying to fix this photo of my dog (eyes) but when I use the redeye tool, it applies the correction (black) to the red pockets beneath her eyeballs.
I was under the impression that other reflections besides just red could be corrected.  Is there another tool or a different way to use this tool?
    TIA

The red-eye tool only works on red eyes, not white or green eyes.
You can fix animal eyes the old fasioned way: with a paintbrush, sponge tool, a selection and adjustment, etc.

  • Red eye removal tool not only for RED eyes

    Hello,
I posted this already one or two years ago:
As wildlife photographers we encounter the "red eye problem" in different ways:
Some birds or mammals have a blue reflection or even a green reflection - or other colors.
The redy eye removal tool won't work here. I am sure that there are some other wildlife photographers,
who have the same problem (we use sometimes flash to get rid of shadows in harsh daylight or to
get more brilliant colors in dull light).
Solution: Don't reduce the tool to red eyes, but let us select the color, which should be removed!
    Thanks for hearing us!
    Christoph
(from Germany - please excuse be english)

Yes, it should be there under the same icon as the Healing brush

  • Red Eye Malfunction

Help! I was using the red eye function, and a black spot appeared on my daughter's white dress. Initially, I fixed the red eye problem, but in the process didn't notice a black spot (caused by the red eye function) on her dress before clicking apply and save.
I went back to try to remove it by clicking the red eye function again and it removed it, but only temporarily, though when I reopen the pic, the spot is still there.  How do I remove this spot? Is there a way of removing this spot even after having saved it?

I agree, I have been having exactly the same problem. Just a dark blob in the eye. It sometime extends beyond the eye, making this function useless. Also, in group shots I can only remove the red eye from one or two eyes, then the function seems to stop working.
I was using iPhoto 4 and this function worked much better in that version.
I saw some tips for advanced use of red eye feature in iPhoto 6 at http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060504123458727&mode=print. Does anyone know of any hacks or tricks in iPhoto 5? Or another Mac program that easily removes red eye?
    Thanks.

Point 1: The default photo editor from the camera app has a red eye removal tool, but I'm not sure how effective it is as it's not something I experience too often thankfully...
Point 2: I'm not sure of a way of changing the default storage directory (Sorry), but some apps may have settings that allow you to change this on an individual basis (The Camera app for example allows you to choose whether to save to media card or phone)
Point 3: There is an app on the device called File Manager. You can use this to cut/copy and paste files and downloads from the device to the media card and vice versa.
    Hope this helps.

  • Red Eye Recommendations

Are there apps that do a really good job with getting rid of red eye? I have a bunch of kid photos with serious red eye problems. I'm talking about big, fully expanded red pupils. Everything I've tried that relies on having to "select" the area of red eye to be eliminated turns out to produce a less than satisfying result. Are there apps that can actually "sense" or "detect" the red area and correct it in an intelligent way? Or do most all of the options rely on selecting the area by hand? Thanks.
    Regards,
    Steve M.

    Steve:
Photoshop Elements has a good red eye tool. It's, IMO, the best consumer editing app is PSE. Here's an example of what can be done with its capabilities.
In case you've not discovered the hidden red eye/enhance tool tricks here they are:
How to Change the Size of the Retouch and Red-Eye Removal Tool
    Type Caps lockControl9
    Undo caps lock
Click on the Retouch or Red-Eye Removal tool
The tab key will toggle between cursor types, a cross or a circle
The "[" and "]" keys decrease or increase the size accordingly.
NOTE: Using the "{" "}" keys will will change the value next to the circle and that represents the degree of change or intensity that the tool imparts on each pass.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Red Eye Removal not working properly

I'm having a problem with the red eye tool. I've done a search of this problem which returned no results.
I have three similar photographs, i.e, taken a few seconds a part at a wedding ceremony. I've corrected the red eye problem on the first file. However, the red eye "dots" REMAIN when I switch to the next files. If I select the red eye tool, I even get the location ovals overlaying the new picture.
    Bug?
    Eric

    > It only works on red eye, not bright eye, steel eye, green eye, or any other color.
    How about Evil Eye? 8-}
Actually I've had the same problem with Red Eye Removal not working properly. Problem is intermittent and the eye was for sure red.

  • How do you get the auto red eye to work in iphoto when it won't click?

When we are trying to correct the red eye problems from photos taken from my dads Sony point and shoot camera iphoto's automatic red eye option isn't enabled. We tryed to fix this by upgrading to the latest version of iphoto but the problem persists- the autocorrect for the red eye won't click. We are feeling ripped off because it should work. Right?

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it does try the following:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If the red eye correction works OK in the new library do the following on your original library: make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Note:  the following is for iPhoto 9.4
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Red eye editing problem

Hi all, I am new here and this has probably been asked and answered but I have not been able to find the answer yet, so please don't slam me to hard for asking for help. The problem I am having is with photos that have red eye in the original. I can edit the red eyes out and the photos look fine on my new imac but when I e-mail to friends they can't believe that the photos I send them have big black eyes. I am guessing it is something to do with the red eye editing. Am I doing something wrong or do I need to use a different program for red eye edits on photos that I send to others, particularly Windows users?
Thanks so much in advance for any help.

    turtle21:
Log into another account on your MBP and see if the problem persists when using iPhoto there. If it does then it's system wide. If the problem is gone then you've narrowed it down to your account.
If it's system wide the 10.4.0 COMBO updater that TD suggested would be the first thing to try. Next to that would be as reinstall of iPhoto. If or when you do try a reinstall of iPhoto you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. The reapply the updaters in the following order: 6.0.4, 6.0.5 and 6.0.6. The last two require the previous version to run.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Red-eye reduction problem

When I use the red eye reduction feature, suddenly it is putting the "fix" on the photo, not on the eye where I click to remove it. Is this a problem anyone else has had and can it fixed? I use iphoto 6.0.4.
    Thanks,
    Ardelle

    Ardelle,
There is a hidden feature that allows you to resize and place the red-eye tool. It works with the Retouch tool, as well.
    Type Caps lockControl9
    Undo caps lock
Click on Retouch or the Red-Eye Removal tool.
The tab key will toggle between cursor types: a cross or a circle for Red-Eye removal tool, and between darken and lighten in the Retouch tool.
The \[ and \] keys decrease or increase the size accordingly.
NOTE: Using the { and } keys will will change the value next to the circle and that represents the degree of change or intensity that the Retouch tool imparts on each pass. To get a lighter pupil with the red-eye tool, Shift-Click inside the circular cursor.
Thanks to Old Toad for posting that tip.
    Regards.

  • Red eye tool problem CS 6

The red eye tool is not working properly.  I started many years ago with Elements, then CS2, CS4, and now CS 6.  I have never had a problem prior to CS 6.  No matter what settings I use, the tool is darkening other parts of the image than the red eye.  Either that  or leaving a huge black eye.

it is the same with different pictures. If I would send the original picture, it doesn't matter, because the artifact would not be there after exporting.
To clarify the problem (excuse my poor english):
If I use the red-eye-correction in aperture there will be a black square around the pupil, but only in aperture. If I export the picture, the square will disappear - red-eye-correction has worked well. (The picture I send is a screen shot).
If I remove the red-eye-correction, the square disappears.
Even more strange: If I change to fullscreen, the square disappears, back to smaller size it come back.
Nobody can reproduce this? (MacBook 2Ghz, 2Gb, OSX 10.4.7, Aperture 1.1.2)
    Thanks, Frank
