Red Hat Linux project merges with Fedora Linux project

Will this mean that the Fedora Linux project will become the officially supported Linux platform for Java releases in the near future? Please reference http://fedora.redhat.com/
What will be the supported Linux platform for v1.5?

A sidenote: I have been happily using a plethora of JDK and J2SE versions on different versiond of SUSE Linux although SUSE was never "the" officially supported Linux distribution.

We have two Servers, One is HP6000, the other is Dell 6400. Both are Linux Red Hat 7.2 OS with Oracle 8.1.7 installed.
Now I want to make a cluster with them, One is active, One is standby.
Which software I need? And how install it on my servers?

you might need cluster software such as RedHat Cluster Manager to perform failed over. it came from with RedHat AS (Advanced Server). other third party sofrwares (plus firmware supported) are also available.

  • Ocfs2 RAC on Red hat linux 6 - kernel -- 2.6.32-220.el6.x86_64 -Oracle11gR2

    Hello,
We want to use ocfs2 as the shared file system for running Oracle RAC 11gR2 on Red hat linux 6.
The red hat linux kernel is 2.6.32-220.el6.x86_64.
I checked the ocfs2 download site and there is no ocfs2 rpms for Red hat 6, infact there are no ocfs2 rpms for Linux 6.
What options do I have if ...go down to Linux 5.x or move to Oracle linux 6.
If my understanding is correct Oracle linux 6 has ocfs2 in the kernel itself and does not need to be installed separately.
What other options do I have for having a shared file system .... ?
    Please comment.
    Thanks,
    X.

    Hi,
Please refer to Note 1365511.1 - How to Configure LUNs for ASM Disks using WWID, DM-Multipathing, and ASMLIB on RHEL 5/OL 5 and RHEL 6/OL 6 . That note can help you to install and configure ASM properly.
    from the note:
" For Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (beginning with 6.4) the kernel driver package 'kmod-oracleasm' is available directly from Red Hat, and can be installed from the "RHEL Server Supplementary (v. 6 64-bit x86_64)" channel on Red Hat Network (RHN).  Updates to this module will be provided by Red Hat.  Please check with your Red Hat advisor for questions concerning support of the kernel driver package.  The 'oracleasmlib' and 'oracleasm-support' packages are maintained by Oracle; they are required in order to use kmod-oracleasm.  "

The file I am testing with is MPEG1 and I am able to play in on a Red Hat 8 system installed with JMF with no problems.
I'm using j2sdk1.4.2_08 on both systems.
I tried another system loaded with Red Hat Enterprise to make sure it was not specific to the system and the same errors occured.
Any suggestions on solutions or troubleshooting would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    My guess is, Yes.
Both ES and AS "flavours" of RHEL 2.1 or 3 are certified/supported (for 9.2). On x86, I think the main differences are licensing/support options and constraints on cpu/ram, not with the OS itself. (WS does however not have all the server packages)
But I think we should not worry about 10g for a year or two... :)

  • Red Hat Cluster Suite without the use of RAC

    Hi,
I want to install Oracle 9i/10g database on two nodes in linux redhat AS 3. I want to use Red Hat Cluster Suite for clustering and failover the Oracle db without the use of RAC. Is it possible and would it be sufficient enough ? Does Red Hat Cluster Suite support with Oracle 10g or just 9i ? With Red HAt Cluster Suite, would it require to have one virtual IP ?
    Thanks

If you want failover all you need is a dataguard solution and skip out on cluster suite.
If you want Distributed Database then you need RAC.. You can't implement a 9i/10g cluster per say by using an OS solution vs an Oracle solution.
    Node A - Primary
    Node B - Secondary
    Node A -> B (DataGuard redo replication)
Process Management scripts to switch users from A to B and vice versa pending recovery of instances. Cluster suite has no involvement outside of what may be nice nice system management capability.

  • Oracle 10gAS migration from Red Hat 4.0 SE to OEL 5.x

    Hello Folks,
I am planning to migrate my Oracle 10gAS R2 (10.1.2.3) Infrastructure Tier on Server A (Red Hat 4) and
Middle Tier(Forms, Report, Discoverer) on Server B (Red Hat 4)
to Server C (Oracle Linux 5.7) and Server D (Oracle Linux 5.7) respectably.
Is it possible to use $OH/clone.pl in order to migrate Middle Tier?
I know that Infrastructure cannot be officially cloned
Is there any way to clone the infrastructure tier? ( or fresh install?)
However this is a just planning and I do not have any previous experience with this kind of migration
Would you guys please be able to give me an advice?
    Any comments would be appreciated
    Thanks in advance
    Cheers,

What are the components you have in Infra ? If OID is installed in infra, thats not possible to clone. You would have to set up a new environment and copy users, groups, etc.
That's what I have done numerous time.
However, if you just have OC4J and OHS, you could think of cloning.

  • Add suffix to Project names?  Pre-fill Project description?

Hi. I'm still working on my Ap3 workflow. Either of the actions in the subject would be most helpful:
    • *Add suffix to Project names*. I have 144 Projects I would like to rename by adding a few words to the end of their current names.
    • *Pre-fill Project Description*. The Project Description field can be found on the Project Information HUD ({Shift}+i with a Project selected). I would like to have all new Projects start with a default Project description. This could be put in from the import panel.
I could alternatively make use of being able to append text to the Project Description field.
    Thanks.

    Hi Dave,
When dealing with dropdowns the best event to use is the preOpen event. This means that there wouldn't be any script in the first dropdown.
Then in the second dropdown you would have a relative simple script that would look back at the user's selection in the first dropdown and then populate the display items in the second dropdown.
    See examples here:
    http://assure.ly/jcTahK
    http://assure.ly/gcXx03
    http://assure.ly/fYCuQ2
When adding an item to a dropdown, you can specify both the display item (what the user's sees) and the bound value (the value of the dropdown that is associated with the user's selection).
    So,
    this.additem("Clonmel", "(052) 1234567");
This would add a city "Clonmel" to the dropdown and the value of the dropdown would be "(052) 1234567", if the user selected Clonmel.
The textfield can then be given the same name as the dropdown and its binding set to Global (see the object > Binding palette when the textfield is selected).
    Hope that helps,
    Niall

  • DB lookup problem with Sun One App. Server 7.0,MySQL3.x - Red hat linux 7.2

    Hi Group,
I have deployed my project in sun one application server 7.0 installed in red hat linux 7.2 and database is mysql. Its working in fine in normal conditions. I could not able to get connection from datasource after I kept my server 10 hours ideal. Again its working fine once I restarted the server. Please give me any solution to prevent this.
The same project is working fine under all conditions in Sun one app server 7.0 installed in windows 2000 server without any look up probem. I Got this problem only in linux OS.

    </jdbc-connection-pool>
    Regards,
    Hari haran

My team solved the problem and I thought that we would share.
The version of Xalan that was packaged with the JRE, that is installed by the Sun One app server, was at least 2 versions out of date. Updating the Xalan package solves the issue and the WAR file now works.
Again, this appears to be only on the Linux version as the package deploys and works perfectly on the Windows version.

    Hi All.
    i've a 64Bit red Hat Linux 2.4.21-37.EL , 5GB Ram , 3GB Swap Space.
    Oracle10g R2. i've 2 prodection database each is having 1400MB of SGA.
when i check the free meory it shows only 12mb of ram is free..why..?
and in swap space it's only 200mb is used...why..?
when i check the dbwither is taking 1.2GB of RAM why..?
can anybody help me in this ...how to get free memory or configure os level to get more free memory.
    Sarit

Linux uses Swap space to run applications. The RAM available may not be enough to run the applications so OS swaps the program between RAM and the swap space to run applications.
You can see your swap partition being used as the swap space with:
    cat /proc/swaps

  • Error Installing ERP2005 on Red Hat 4es Linux with Oracle

Normally I only install SAP for customers on Unix boxes or WIndows, but I was asked for a customer to do an installation on Red Hat 4es 64bit. It will be a Sandbox system for the customer. ERP2005 with Oracle.
But after some issues on shared objects when I wasn't able to start the sapinst, cause there was no JRE installed, but has been installed after this (version 1.4.2.13 for linux). I now run into the following issue when ./sapinst is running and me trying to start the ./startInstGui.sh I get the following :
java.lang.RuntimeException: invocation target exception: /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_13/lib/i386/libawt.so: libXp.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
both files are there, JAVA_HOME had been set, java had also been set as path, but when I do a file on the files it gives me:
    [root@su49tas1 lib64]# file libXp.so.6.2
libXp.so.6.2: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, AMD x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), stripped
    [root@su49tas1 i386]# file libawt.so
libawt.so: ELF 32-bit LSB shared object, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), stripped
looking at this there might be a conflict on version, but the libXp.so comes from the RH install cd and the libawt.so comes from the jre1.4.2.13-rpm.bin file downloaded from the java sun website.
strange thing is that I cannot find a 64bit version so that might bring down my thoughts on version conflict.
Hopefully someone had had this same issue also and had solved it, but also other input which might help me solve this is appreciated.
cause this is turning my head for a day and night
    cheers

  • Oracle Linux 6.2 with RH compatible kernel .versus. Red Hat Linux 6.2 diff?

    Hello everyone
    * assume that I booted Oracle Linux 6.2 with a Red Hat Compatible Kernel - as opposed to booting the Oracle Linus 6.2 with UEK R1 or UEK R2 kernels *
I am interested in any feature differences between the two OS relating to: functionality, reliability, performance, stability and tools.
The reason I ask is that my employer is trying to figure out if OL 6.2 with a RH compatible kernel is identical to the RHEL 6.2 OS, if we excluded the Oracle UEK and Oracle clustering extra functionality.
This OS will not be used to run Oracle 11g R2 database, this is to be used for any other Linux based non-database applications (such has running Java, JDBC, Apache, C/C++, etc).
    many thanks
    Yuri

    yurib wrote:
So now I can tell them to use Oracle Linux 6.x with a RH compatible kernel for all those non-DB systems and use OL 6.x with UEK for Oracle 11g database.
And I remember there was (still is?) a third kernel, which does not contain new features or performance enhancements, but only bug fixes for the RH compatible kernel.
I am not sure if you are going to need it, but it can be very useful in some cases. For example, if there is a bug in the RH kernel, and you don't want to run the UEK line as you want to stick to 100% strict RHEL compatibility, then Oracle can put the fix into this 3rd bug-fix only RH compatible kernel series.
(For me, I've set up dual-boot UEK & standard RHEL kernels on my machines and never have never encountered issues or bugs.)

    Many thanks, as always

  • Red Hat: 'Yes, we undercut Oracle with hidden Linux patches'

Interesting read on The Register about Redhat "obfuscating" kernel code by changing the way it deals with kernel patches. Comments from the peanut gallery say that although this does not violate the GPL, it does violate the spirit of the GPL. But then again, how else can Redhat "protect" its market share in the shark-eat-shark commercial world?
And Redhat is specifically doing this to counter the threat to their market share and customer base by Oracle's OEL and CentOS.
Has there been an official comment from Oracle about this?
We have 70+ OEL servers - that used to be RHEL. So its is cause for concern for us, as Linux support and a stable and robust kernel are important to us.

    Billy  Verreynne  wrote:

The RHEL-compatible kernel in Oracle Linux is a direct rebuild of the Red Hat sources, regardless of how they're provided, so it doesn't matter too much. The UEK has its own source tree[1] and we still provide the .src.rpm in the traditional format of tarball+patches for that. The only kernel that may become slightly more difficult to create is the RHEL5+Oracle Patches kernel, but then we'd probably just provide that as the RHEL tarball+Oracle patches.
At the end of the day, Red Hat may feel that this will make life more difficult for us, but as we've already built our own kernel (UEK) with its own source tree which is independent from theirs, the impact is probably nowhere near what they were hoping for.
