Red light at earphone plug in?

My son has just installed Windows on our MacBook. It is one of the new ones with Intel. When he starts to use the Windows applications a red light appear when the earphones would plug in. Is this something that I should worry about or is it all right? I told him that I didn't want him using Windows until I found out as I didn't want to damage the computer if the red light meant a problem.
thanks in advance for your help
Macbook and I-mac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The light is something that turns on, guess a quirk with the bootcamp program.
BUT YOU CAN TURN IT OFF!!!
I guess everyone has been experiencing it but has not figured it out.
You can go to control panel, then look for sigma tel audio. I belive its either under sound or the mouse and other hardware. After you find sigma tel audio, click on it then click advanced. Then uncheck enable digital output
Then after that you should see that the red light goes off.
The red light bothered me for a while, and I found the setting in the control panel.
Now no more worrisome Red light q:o)

  • Red Light in Earphone Jack

I was using my Macbook Pro with my Headphones plugged in. When I unplugged them I got a red light that appeared to be in the Earphone Jack. When I tried turning the volume up without the headphones plugged in it would give me a circle with a dash through it. But when I tried with the headphones plugged in that didn't happen. Once I restarted my Macbook it went away but I would like to know what this is/how it happened for future reference.

The socket is capable of outputting analogue audio or a digital stream (seen as a red light) and this is controlled by a small switch inside the socket and should only go to digital if you use a Toslink plug.

  • Red light glows when plugged in, but device wont respond

I've had the red Curve for nearly a year now. Today I accidentally knocked it off of my desk onto the carpet. It was not a hard fall, but when I picked the device up it seemed to have turned off. It would not turn back on viathe power button, so I attempted tor emove the battery. As I struggled with the back of the device, it seemed to start working again. I got the white screen with the hourglass that usually comes with the reinsertion of the battery. However, when I finally removed the battery and put it back in, the device would not respond. I plugged it in to the AC charger and the light glowed red for a few seconds, but the phone did not respond otherwise. Every time I unplug it and plug it back in, the red light glows but nothing else happens. I tried putting in a different battery but it didn't help. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my blackberry? do I need to simply leave it plugged in?

it's black. There seems to be nothing wrong with it except that the light turns red when I plug it in and it simply wont respond when I press buttons. There is nothing rattling inside and nothing seems broken at all. I heard that when phones are dropped, they may lose their battery power. Does this happen? If this is what happened, shouldn't the light then be green?

I have a problem with my macbook,if I don't have my earphone plugged, I can't listen anything, and start shine a red light .what should I do?

try inserting and removing the headphones in and out of the audio jack.  The toggle switch is stuck and your mac thinks the headphones are still plugged in.

  • TS1574 you should mention that the audio output jack is fleaky, try plugging and unplugging until red light goes off !!!

It should be mentionned in the Apple help that the audio output jack is sometimes fleaky, as it does not reclose the speakers contacts correctly when an earphone jack is removed. This can be checked by looking into the computer audio jack and seeing a red light, which confirms the optic output is active. Plugging and unplugging the jack until the red light disapears is the cure, unless you are unfortunate enough to have a broken audio jack. Good luck !

Same here. I don't remember doing anything out of the ordinary. I was working in Parallels on getting a AM station to stream via some web interface. Next time I went to play sound on the internal speakers, no go.
I've tried zapping the PRAM, toggling the headphone jack and the toothpick thing. Nothing seems to work.
I've also noticed that I get sound in my headphones in iTunes but not in Garageband (someone had suggested that starting up Garageband would reset things.
    Any other ideas out there?
Is there a file that could get corrupted that I could switch out of my back up?

  • HT1338 Why is my earphone jack have a red light blinking in it?

I have a MacBook Pro that I bought brand new back in 2009.. There is a red light coming from the inside of my earphone jack and I'm not sure what it means.. my headphones still work and I can hear everything, but I've never seen this red light before. Help?

If you can see the red light with the headphones disconnected, the changeover contact isn't moving back to it's proper position.
You'll find you have no sound from the internal speakers.
Try plugging the headphone jack in and out a few (dozen) times. If that fails you can attempt to tease it back with a non-conducting instrument, like a plastic toothpick or similar.

If you are seeing a Red LED, you may have a faulty MagSafe Adapter.
I remember reading that the orange light is produced by a combination of a Red and Green LED. If that's the case, It seems that the adapter isn't lighting the green LED properly at that time.
I would suggest you seek service with your nearest Genius Bar (Apple Retail Store) or Apple Authorised Service Provider as they have access to diagnostics which may assist in isolating any hardware issues you may be experiencing.
    Cheers.

  • Found white powder in earphone connection and sound doesn't work, red light coming thru hole

I found a white powder accumulating in the earphone port which after cleaning out delicately, the sound on the computer is grayed off and a redlight comes thru the hole...what is happening, please help, thank you

It sounds as if you're 'stuck' in optical output mode. The usual 'fix' for this is to gently clean the port with a toothpick, until the red light goes out.
No idea what the white powder might be - you haven't spilled something around the port, have you?

  • My speakers on my macbook receiently quit working after I had been using some headphones. My headphones still work whenever I plug them in with both increase and decrease in volume. I have also noticed a red light on the inside of the headphone jack.

My speakers on my macbook pro quit working the other day after using my headphones. when I try to adjust the speakers my screen indicator sayes that it is at full volume on the bar but also muted(circle with line through it). I also noticed a red light inside my headphone jack. My headphones still work including volume. Any quick fix?

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
Make sure Mute is not enabled.
    2. Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.

  • Why is there a red light on where i plug in my headphones

why is there a red light on where i plug in my headphones

it means that your mac still thinks headphones are plugged in.  Rapidly insert and remove the headphones and see if the internal toggle switch flips back. With the red light on, you should have no sound from the built-in speakers.

  • Plug into charger red light stays on for about 5-10 seconds

Just bought a used 8700 bb and when I plug it in the redlight comes on for about 5-10 seconds and then turns off.
    What does that mean?
Also when I try to turn on nothing happens, the only action is when I plug it into the charger and that red light comes on for a brief moment.
