Red light coming from my audio output, speakers not working

I read somewhere about wiggling a toothpick around in there, but that didn't work, any other ideas.
This happened after I had a 1/4 to 1/8 converter plugged in there to use a little mini amp.
I've lost the use of speakers.
headphones work fine
I think the optical input is still reading as if something is plugged in. Not sure if there's something in my system I need to switch, or if I need to take it in, have the jack opened up and replaced

Just to rule out the obvious make sure your mute switch (F3) is not on. If your 'switch is stuck' you would see a red light coming from the headphone port.
Double check your Sys Prefs - Sound settings ...if things still are not working you might try a SMC reset followed by a Pram reset that would restore your orig. settings.

This is perfectly normal. You can run an optical digital out this way. You need a mini-toslink adapter like this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini-TOSLINK
Then you can set the digital out as default (instead of Speakers) to run audio to a surround sound reciever via optical fiber.

Can not get sound on my Computer.  The headphone port actually has a red light coming from it.  Help

Insert a headphone jack and remove it and see if the light goes out. The red light indicates the switch didn't switch from head phone to your Mac's speakers. Some folks have actually used a match stick to undo the switch.

audio output will not work on external speakers.  Internal speakers will work.  What do i do to replace audio output slot

Right click your volume icon in the notification area and select "volume control options". From there, you should be able to select the external speakers.
    I hope that helps!

  • IPad audio  output is not working properly, except on Siri. Any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix it?

iPad audio output does not work, except for on Siri. The mute button is not on, and the volume buttons have no effect/ don't work (unless Siri is open). I have reset the iPad, tried iOS7 and iOS8 resets, which didn't help. The audio output mostly works when headphones are out in, but has a tendency to cut out from time to time. Without headphones, Audio might start working again briefly from time to time, but most the time it doesn't.  Any ideas on what is wrong with it and how to fix it?
my iPad is a 3rd gen, 16GB wifi only model, if that helps
I did take it to an Apple Store, but the inncorrectly insisted that my speaker was bust and it would cost £250 to replace the whole iPad!

iOS 8 isn't even out yet. If you are running iOS 8, I assume you are a developer and if you are, you are in the wrong forum to try to get help. If you are not a developer and you're running iOS 8, maybe that's why you are having problems on the iPad.

The type that I made bold doesn't make sense. Is this a typo and you mean that " headphones are not in"?

And you know they are incorrect because you get sound here and there from time to time? That fact doesn't prove that something isn't working correctly inside. You could very well have a bad connection inside the device causing this, but somehow you seem to know that's not the case.

  • Internal speakers suddenly will not unmute.  My headphones work, and there is a red light coming from the headphone jack

I put my volume on mute a few weeks ago, and I don't know if I have used it again since then or not, but now the volume will not unmute.  There is a red light glowing out of the headphone jack.  Sound through headphones works.  I've tried updating and restarting my computer.  Help?

    No, not forceful - gentle.
    A PRAM-reset might also help:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Try this a few times.

  • Audio output is not working in preferences

MacBook Pro 17" late 2012 - running lion for the last 6 mon, just did 10.8.3 upgrade as instructed. Now I have no audio control on output. Icon in menu is grey and the the preferences' control for output are grey . Output, which is set to Digital-what happened to internal speaker controls. Verified disk, reset permissions, did a pram-restart, and a few restarts from there.  Still no audio, but the digital light did come on once out of the earphone jack.  Did the earphones and no sound.  Correction, the earbuds are now working, they were not working earlier. SUGGESTIONS please!

  • Audio output's not working

Whenever I try to watch youtube videos or face time, I can not hear the words that other people are saying.

So odd that you mention this.  It happened to me last week.  I could hear VERY faint audio coming out of the back jack.  I figured the mobo or the physical connection was bad and was about to call Lenovo and get a replacement under warranty.
I rebooted to activate some Vista updates that were pending and when I did..... the audio was fine.  Been several days with several reboots now.  No idea what caused it...

  • Problem with audio output device not working

Okay about a week ago, i came home from work, booted up my laptop and noticed that the hp quicktouch program failed to start. Then I also noticed a red X over my sound icon on my taskbar. So i thought it might have been an error of some sort and rebooted. When I did that everything came back up find, but when I started playing a game, I noticed the sound went out again... I closed the game and went into the device manager. But as soon as I closed the game out the sound fixed itself... So i started the game back up and about 10 mins in it went out again... So I went back into device manager, scanned for hardware changes and it seems to be working find, so i reinstalled the game thinking that could be the problem.
Well when I rebooted my laptop i got the error again about quicktouch and the red X over my speaker icon. I went back into device manager to find that my sound, game controller device and driver is not even listed...
Ive been looking around for a fix to this problem, but could not find any solution. So today I reinstalled windows again, but no sound, no driver, or anything is showing up. I really dont know what to do to fix this, people say download drivers and ive tried that, nothing is seeming to work.
If anyone knows what I can do to fix this please inform me, the only thing else I can think of is go MAC lol.
Oh btw, im running a HP Pavilion Entertaiment PC (dv9700). It has windows vista 64 bit.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Red glow coming from superdrive

this may be a stupid question but here goes. i have looked through the forums, and googled this and have yet to find any mention of whether or not it's ok for there to be a red light (glow) coming from my superdrive when i'm burning. does this indicate a problem, or is this normal? i know about the red light coming from the headphone jack, and how that was a semi-issue, so i figured this might be a problem as well.

The optical drive uses a 650 nm laser to burn discs - that laser is red in color (deep red, actually) and you are seeing reflected light from it. Normally, a set of felt pads block the opening of the superdrive and prevent light from escaping - these pads may be worn/damaged on your drive.

  • Headphone Jack Glowing Red, Internal Speakers Not Working...

Hey, I have a 2.0GHz White MacBook (almost a week old), and I just recently came across this problem (this morning, actually). I usually have my MacBook connected to some external speakers through the headphone jack, the internal speakers are pretty terrible. Anyway, last night I left the computer on playing music as I fell asleep, this morning I woke up and the computer must have some how come unplugged from the AC power, as it was dead. I plugged it back in and everything was fine (I mean, it had to charge up, and the battery 'health' in iStat Pro was down to 93%, also not sure what this means... But everything else was fine). Then, I unplugged my external speakers and the jack was glowing red, I believe there's an LED inside. The internal speakers would then not work.
I did a quick Google search and discovered that this problem had been experienced on MacBook Pros. Someone recommended plugging in a set of headphones, I did so and then unplugged them and the internal speakers worked for a moment. I plugged in the external speakers again, and they worked (and work) fine. The problem is with the internals, they don't work, and plugging in my headphones again has not solved the problem, and the light is still on when the jack is not occupied.
    Any ideas?
[edit] As of this writing, they are currently working, after plugging in the headphones again and unplugging them, however, the light still blinks when I do this, and there is a bit of a hesitation between the headphone being unplugged and the internal speakers kicking in... (longer than normal, I know there was always a slight delay, but this is a few seconds of blinking light and no sound).

you can fix this by "cleaning" the audio jack. the computer thinks that a digital output is connected. if you go to sound under system preferences, and it says digital output rather than internal speakers, then this is the problem.
I used a tightly rolled up piece of toilet paper to clean the jack. I twisted it up, stuck it in the jack, and then moved it around for a while. the red light went off and my internal speakers started working. someone else used a toothpick.
also, before i fixed this, i couldn't turn the volume up or down (unless i was using headphones) and the volume level screen that shows up on the screen had a circle with a line thru it...like the no smoking signs, but small and just under the volume bars.

  • MacBook Pro speakers not working.

I was using my (mid-2010) MacBook Pro running Lion and then started watching a video and suddenly the internal speakers stopped working. There was no red light coming from the headphones jack. The volume was not muted. I tried plugging headphones in and even that wasn't working. I can adjust the volume but the speakers or headphones don't work. The headphones are working, I'm certain of that.
    What should I do?

Thanks Dave, but I already figured it out.
I feel like such an idiot for not trying to reboot the computer. *facepalm*
