Red light shining out of Headphone jack

What does it mean if a red light is signing out of your headphone jack? I think this can't be good.

The optical digital output has tripped on in the absence of the cable. There was a thread here before - do a search for red light.
One answer here
Go to Control Panel > SigmaTell Audio > click on the 3rd tab. On the bottom there is SPDIF, uncheck the "Enable Digital Output" voila!

  • Internal speakers suddenly will not unmute.  My headphones work, and there is a red light coming from the headphone jack

I put my volume on mute a few weeks ago, and I don't know if I have used it again since then or not, but now the volume will not unmute.  There is a red light glowing out of the headphone jack.  Sound through headphones works.  I've tried updating and restarting my computer.  Help?

    No, not forceful - gentle.
    A PRAM-reset might also help:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Try this a few times.

  • Volume won't work - infrared light coming out of Headphone jack

I was using my headphones for a bit on my MBP and now that I took them out of the MBP, I noticed I can't adjust volume. Actually I cant hear anything. I can see infrared coming out of jack. Whats going on here?

    Hi NittanyAgent,
Inside the audio output socket on the MacBook Pro (and MacBook) there is a small microswitch which is enabled when you insert the headphone jack. Of course, when you remove the jack it's meant to deactivate thus allowing you to use the internal speakers again. It appears that, in your case, it's stuck in the active position which is why you are seeing the red L.E.D. light shining through.
Try inserting and removing the headphone jack a few times. Others have also had success by, carefully, using a paperclip or toothpick.
If the above fails you may have to visit your local Apple Store or independent Apple Authorised Service Provider.

  • I have been experiencing a red light coming out the audio jack and no audio coming out of my Mid 2009 13.3" Macbook pro. I was wondering if Applecare would cover whatever this is?. I am covered until september 2012. Thanks

    Can anyone help?

It should be covered. Contact Apple support

for options available to you, or take your Mac to an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

  • My macbook pro volume is locked. there is a circle with a line through it when i press the volume buttons but no volume will sound. music and videos will not play and there is no red light on in the headphone jack.

Any suggestions of what could be wrong? or how it can be fixed. I have not updated it or anything. this just randomly happened about 2 hours ago. I tried looking for answers but nothing has worked so far.

I tried all of the fixes above and quite a few others like resetting the pram and nvram and what finally worked for me was resetting my sound card from Terminal. Open Terminal and enter the command sudo kill -9 `ps ax|grep 'coreaudio[a-z]' | awk '{print $1}'`. It will ask for your password, enter in your password and press enter. The sound card will be reset and your audio and volume control should be restored..

  • Audio muted/disabled- red light coming out of jack????

what the heck? anyone know what's going on here? red light in my headphone jack and volume control non-operational. reset the PRAM to get speakers working for a moment before problem returned. works fine when headphones in, but not without.
and the red light shining out... what IS that?

    Hey all-
I've worked on laptops before and didn't feel comfortable sticking a metal clip into it. I did snap the end off a Q-tip and wiggled the cardboard ever so gingerly and it went off. BUT later in the week the same problem occurred. I've got an appointment with Apple tomorrow and will keep you up to date on the "official word" with this problem. I'm still in the year warranty period (refurbished pruchased, year up in November) so they should replace anything that is failing this soon in the game.
Have a co-worker that just had a new MBP's video fail after less than a month of use---Apple replaced the whole machine, but only because it was in the first 30 days of purchase. Doubt they'll make me the same kind of offer. Still sorta miffed to have problems with my newest machine. Never had to get AppleCare, but think I'll have to with this guy... hope it's not IceBook Logic board blues for these first Intel offerings.

  • Output speakers do not work, have a red light coming out of my headph. jack

My headphone jack works but theres a red light coming out of my headphone jack when its unplugged and my internal speakers will not work...anybody have an idea? Tried system preferences and says no options for selected audio and cant get any sound for my built in output speakers and my volume display in my bar is faded....HELP!

    @Spencer
I know this thread was marked answered but thought I should chime in since my MBP (2.66Ghz Late '08, bought May '09) started to exhibit this behavior. I was getting "No Output" greyed out speaker images and the red light coming out from the headphone jack. It's been intermittent but finally wouldn't go away so I figured I'd contact Appe.
This afternoon I called Applecare and was advised to take it to the Apple store... no questions asked, no troubleshooting steps, just told me to take it to the store and even offered to make me an appt. I was able to get an appointment at the genius bar same day (literally 2 hours after I hung up the phone). My wife took a ride with me and we headed down there.
When I showed the technician she tested it and then went to the back room to double check something. When she came back she told me that it was hardware related and needed to be sent in for service. I am under warranty so it was no skin off my back but I will need to be without the machine for a few days.
I agree with Rod to take it in, esp. if you're still under warranty. I should also mention that this only started happening a few weeks ago but the red light part was rather sudden.
    Good luck!

  • Suddenly no sound unless headphones connected and new red light ommitting out of that port

I've had my macbook connected to my speakers for much of the last couple of days. I reckon I last had sound from my actual macbook speak the day before yesterday - No nothing! The speaker icon in the menu bar is greyed out and in system prefs, all is normal and not muted. When I use the volume keys, the window comes up but the volume indicators don't move up or down and there is the forbidden/ no entry icon underneath the volume indicator bar.
There is also a new red light ommitting from the headphone port.
PLEASE HELP! (I'm using Lion 10.7.3)

That should read speaker not speak and NOW nothing, not no nothing. Sorry.

  • Red light coming from the headphone port

does anybody know why there is a red light coming from the headphone port.
    This is after i reformatted
    Thanks

This is perfectly normal. You can run an optical digital out this way. You need a mini-toslink adapter like this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mini-TOSLINK
Then you can set the digital out as default (instead of Speakers) to run audio to a surround sound reciever via optical fiber.

  • How to switch off the red light (optical out) on my Audigy 2

I am not using the optical out most of the time, is there a way to switch off the red light coming out of optical out?red light is causing heat leading to cracks on the surface of the card. Please help soon. thx

Are you sure? AFAIK, LED's don't produce any significant amounts of heat. And, no, I don't think the light can be switched off.

  • Can barely hear out of headphone jack

About a month ago, I went to listen to my music through my headphone jack and could barely hear it. I checked the volume and it was all the way up. I also replaced the headphones and nothing improved. I also use my iPod in my car and am able to plug it into the car via the USB and that seems to work just fine. It is obviously out of the 90 day warranty period, and I don't know what to do.

The hardware warranty is one year. The free telephone support is 90 days.
    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.
    Apple - iPod Repair price
A third-party place like the following will replace the jack for less. Google for more.

  • Volume Difference Out Of Headphone Jack?

Has anyone experienced a difference in volume from the left and right sides of the stereo headphone jack. I've tried different headphones, different audio inputs on recievers etc. Happens on every song and happens all the time. It seems to be getting worse. I really notice this when the iPod is plugged into my car stereo. Any advice?

  • TS1574 no audio from built-in speakers and red light visible through the headphone port

My 15" late 2006 MBP has just stopped producing sound from the internal speakers and for the first time there is a red light visible inside the headpbone output port. Apple support says contact support but since I'm a long time out of even my extended warranty I wondered if anyone had a fix-it suggestion I might try myself?

Try to plug the headphone into and out of the headphone socket couple of times
to flip the microswitch in the socket.
Red light visible means sound output is stuck in digital mode.
    Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    Procedure is same for 10.6
    Reset SMC.http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If these steps do not help, repair Apple Store is needed.
