Red Nano icons on desktop and in iTunes 7

I got a product Red 8GB nano for christmas and notice that when I plug it into my mac the icons OS X is using for it are not what I'd expect. For instance, on the desktop instead of the icon being an ipod its the same icon OS X uses for a disk image (such as a dmg).
Further, in iTunes 7 it shows its icon as a shopping cart! What is up with that? Are these too new for proper icons? My gen 1 nano had proper icons. Also this ipod is having that error code -48 error. Does that error cause this icon issue as well?
My question is: Are the icons supposed to be like that? If so, why. If not, what's the issue and can I remedy it?
Thanks,
Nick

Thanks for the quick reply. I have turned the enable option on and off during my attempts to get it to not give me the -48 error code when starting itunes.
When I plug mine in, on the desktop and in finder it appears as an image instead of an ipod. I could see it using an external disk icon, however it's not. And in iTunes it shows the iPod as a shopping cart! I've restored it at least 3 times and the software says that it's up to date.
Anyhow, I figured the icons should be showing up. Since yours seems to be working properly, may I ask if you're having this error code -48 issue? I wonder if they have anything in common.

  • Invisible Startup Disk Icon on Desktop and Finder

Today suddenly I found that my Startup disk icon was gone from the desktop and from the Finder. I did some searching and found the following solution that may be useful for someone else:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=4932292#post4932292
    I pasted the solution below:
    from a Terminal window, type:
    ls -lOd /
(That's lowercase ell, lowercase ess, space, minus, lowercase ell, capital oh, lowercase dee, space, forward slash)
You should get something like this:
    hostname:~ username$ ls -lOd /
    drwxrwxr-t 32 root admin - 1156 Feb 8 20:35 /
Sounds like you might see something like this instead:
    hostname:~ username$ ls -lOd /
    drwxrwxr-t@ 32 root admin hidden 1156 Feb 8 20:35 /
(note it says "hidden" instead of "-")
    To fix this, type:
    sudo chflags nohidden /
and provide your admin password. You won't get any output back from the command but the icon should now appear on your desktop, and the hidden flag should go away if you repeat the 'ls -lOd /' command.
And just in case you missed it above, you've got to be sure Hard disks are turned on in Finder General Preferences under "Show these items on the Desktop"

A few days after trying the solution in my previous post, I realized that the Startup disk icon was still missing from Devices in the Finder's sidebar.
So, following some advice from other forums, I went and deleted com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.sidebarlists.plist from homedirectory/library/preferences. Then did a control-option-click on Finder in the Dock and chose "relaunch".
So this completed the fix. Coincidentally this also fixed a "freeze" issue that I was having.

  • HT1351 I got a new computer-pc desktop- and installed iTunes. Now I want to sync all the playlists on my established iPod to this new library, but it seems to want to erase my iPod and do the reverse!?

The computer is authorize, but I really don't want to have to recreate this playlists!

  • NO CD ICON ON DESKTOP OR IN ITUNES WINDOW

    Hi,
I wish to transfer the music from a PC burnt home music cd, a TDK CD-R80 700MB up to 52 speed disc.
However, after perhaps 20 cd loadings, the icon does not appear on the desktop or in the itunes window.
Quite a few times as well, the mac does not eject the cd and a whirling noise often sounds coming from inside the mac.
Any thoughts please? Thx George UK

Ah, the old 'cd not recognised in the drive' problem. I get this often. Not sure if it is duff media, or an OS X bug.
I find that waiting for it to ask you to put the disk before you do so helps. Also another disc sometimes works too.
If it gets stuck in the drive restart and hold the mouse button in to eject. Or keep hitting the eject key as the computer restarts, that works too.

  • Icons on desktop and selections on all menus changed to AAAAAAAA

If I click on the icons the correct name of the file appears, but if I click anywhere else on the desktop the AAAAA's reappear. All of the desktop icons do this. The number of A's varies with each desktop icon. Also, all of the choices on the menu bar across the top of the screen have changed to AAAAAA. The selection choices for the items all have AAAAA. If I use the restore software cd as the start up disk, the menu bar is normal. I have done disk repair, still have the problem.
The programs and files all work correctly.
    Any ideas?

  • Remote's Icon over Screen and Automatic iTunes Launch

Sometimes when I'm watching a movies using VLC and I hit remote to change volume, this icon appears over the screen http://img97.imageshack.us/i/screenshot20091031at846.png/
Then it disappears in a couple of seconds.
Any idea what is that and why is it there?
Also, when I'm watching a movie using VLC and I want to use the remote to pause the playback, it automatically launches iTunes and it starts playing music in the background which is kind of annoying. I tried to deactivate the iTunes Helper, but then iTunes won't launch automatically when I connect my iPhone, iPod etc. Any idea how to resolve this?

I used to be a believer in Mac OS reliability that never needed to resort to a clean install...
Unfortunately, my experiences since 10.5 have proven that OS X is no longer as foolproof as it once was, having no other recourse but to do clean installs to resolve maddening issues.
And no, I've never been a true Windoze user, having started on an Apple ][+ with 128k memory and lower-case mod option.
At any given time for most of my latter life, I am running or maintaining at least 4 Macs concurrently in one configuration or another, and having also been a commercial print and graphics business owner running an all-Mac shop, so I am definitely more exposed to any issues that may arise with OS X.
So I can assure you that having to do clean installs of OS X has been increasingly required post 10.4 to avoid or resolve problems. I wish it wasn't so.
For all the issues I've encountered that I couldn't resolve other than doing a clean reinstall, no one has been able to provide an alternative solution to those problems.
Anyways, I will try your suggestion and hopefully it will bear fruit!

  • Losing jpg preview image for icons on desktop and in folders

I have my View Options set to "Show Icon Preview", which normally works fine. Periodically the previews disappear, and show simply as a generic jpg icon. It is not consistent or across the board - some folders are fine, some are not, and the desktop itself has some of each!
I've jumped through every hoop I know.... PRAM, Prefs, etc, but nothing has worked. It's spontaneously corrected itself twice, but this is getting to be a problem. Does anyone know anything... I hope.....?
    Thank you!!!

I had a client who had this problem at the beginning of the year and he invested in SneakPeek Pro from here http://www.code-line.com/software/sneakpeekpro/ which cured the issue

  • Blinking menu bar, icons on desktop and Finder windows.

This happened after I restarted the computer for installing software updates. The only thing that didn't blink was the dock. When I open an application, it blinks as well, but a little slower, so that gives me time to click around. Even shutting down/restarting is a problem, since the menu bar blinks so quickly that I couldn't click on it. I had to hold down the power button to shut down.
I tried creating a new account and logged in. Everything remains normal in the new account.
I went into Library>Preferences, deleted the file called "com.apple.finder.plist" and restarted. It didn't work.
Is there anything else I can do? I really don't want to reformat my mac and lose all the applications installed.

Have you installed any third-party utilities and/or menubar utilities, contextual menu items, preference panes, etc. These most typically are the cause of such a problem. Also corrupted cache files may cause problems. Use a utility such as TinkerTool System to clear all system, user, and font caches then immediately reboot. You should not need to erase your drive to fix the problem, but the problem is definitely caused by something you either installed that is incompatible or something corrupted in your Home folder such as a preference file.

  • How do you make all your icons on desktop and elsewhere show size etc?

    Hi,
I can't remember how to show my disk size or how many items are in a folder. I have this feeling it's to do with Finder Preferences. You know how you have your hard drive listed and it will say 60GB in size or a folder in finder will say 14 items.

    Malcolm,
Thanks, that's the tip I was trying to remember.

  • IPod appears on BOTH desktop and iTunes

My (video) iPod shows up on both the desktop and inside iTunes. I have to eject it from both locations before disconnecting.
The problem is - upon connecting - I receive the same error 4 times. "The iPod is in use and cannot be updated." I have to click "ok" 4 times. Then, it updates the iPod.
Should the iPod appear in both locations? Why do I receive the error 4 times?
    Thanks.

If your iPod is enabled for disk use it mounts on the desktop and in iTunes. It also appears mounted on the desktop for the time it takes to update the iPod if you have it set to auto-sync but not disk enabled. However ejecting it from iTunes should also un-mount it from the desktop

  • 2nd gen iPod not visible on Desktop or in iTunes

I have a 40GB 2nd gen iPod that works fine and until recently always appeared on the Desktop and in iTunes whenever connected. Haven't had any problems with the iPod or iTunes. Now it is not visible at all but it does still recharge.
It's connected with FireWire 400 but it doesn't show up in System Profiler or Disk Utility.
I've reset it. I've forced Disk Mode. Nothing works.
Another thing... I have my whole music collection stored on an external LaCie drive and connected to the laptop with FireWire 800. iTunes works fine, though, whenever I connect the iPod to the laptop, iTunes stops playing (the spinning colorwheel appears) and as soon as I disconnect the iPod, I hear the external drive kick in and iTunes resumes playing.
    Please help! Thank you.

Thank you for your reply, socrates.
I always connect the iPod into my Powerbook via FireWire 400 and the external LaCie is connected to the laptop via FireWire 800. So, there is no daisy-chain setup.
Actually, I've just realized that my iPod is 3rd generation not 2nd. When I looked at the "Settings" on the iPod it says Version: 2.3 so I thought that meant 2nd generation but just discovered otherwise. Is there any way that I can change the title of the thread?
And any more advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • How to get rid of Icons on Desktop?

I have Documents and Pictures folders in Macintosh HD and as icons on the Desktop. When I clean up the Desktop by dragging the icons to Trash in the dock, that works OK. But later when I try to access anything via Documents or Pictures on the HD I get a message that it can't be opened because it's in Trash, and I must drag it out of Trash. How can I get rid of the icons on Desktop and still access stuff in Documents and Pictures?

Drag the icons on the desktop to the folder in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon, renaming folders as needed.

  • Ipod nano icons have rotated

My ipod nano icons have rotated and our now on their side.... how do i get it upright again? So basically everything is on it's right side reading from top to bottom with the sleep and volume buttons on it's left side. I want it so the sleep and volume buttons are at the top and the icons and everything is reading left to right from there.
    Thank you

    Hello Miss Chris,
Sounds like your display was rotated.  To rotate it back:
Place two fingers on the screen and rotate in the direction you want the screen to
move, until the screen faces the way you want.

  • Just bought a nano and want to download some of my iTunes library. The "Music" button shows almost all my selections but some albums are missing, yet thos albums appear on the nano icon on my desktop but none of the others. What's happening?

Just bought a nano and want to download some of my iTunes library. The "Music" button shows almost all my selections but some albums are missing, yet ONLY those albums appear on the nano icon on my desktop after being dragged there but none of the others. What's happening?
I've read some of the post here that I thought might help but they refer to titles (Music) and triangles in the "Devices" window which are nowhere to be seen when I open the "Devices" window.
I have iTunes 11.0.3 and Mac OS 10.6.8. Does this make a difference?

I should mention that, for the first problem, I do make sure that my new tracks are stored in the folder where I told iTunes that my music is in. Also, when I say the cataloging of my library stops short of cataloging all my songs, I have tried leaving the computer unattended for days (my computer's sleep mode is disabled). It always stops before cataloging all of my music regardless of whether I am doing something else while iTunes is cataloging, or if I just let iTunes be the only program that's open during the cataloging process.
