Red orange flash on startup then black screen

My macbook was working well one second, and thewn the screen went black. I tried rebooting, but i get a quick red/ orange flash on startup and then a solid black screen. The computer still works, I'm listening to music from it as I write this...
Based on what I've read so far, it seems the only solution is connecting an external monitor or paying out about £200.00 to have a motherboard reinstalled?
Has any one got any thing else on how to tackle this problem?
Thans for any advice!

You need a new screen or new GPU depending on what has gone bad. If the motherboard/GPU is bad then you will not be able to use an external monitor. So if you can use an external monitor then it's more likely that the screen is bad.

    Hi,
Had the same issue.  Hard reset not working.
What I did was: start your mac/pc and open iTunes, hold down the home button of the iPad (and while holding the button), connect it to the PC with the cable.
Keep pressing until you get a pop-up asking to upgrade or restore.
    Hope this helps for you!

PowerBook G4 - Won't Start Up - 3 Strange Beeps then just LED flashes and sudden death - black screen.
Prior that the powerbook also couldn't start but I could see the Apple logo, so via fire-wire (holding T at start up) I backed up the hard disk.
Check via DiskToolPro the structure, defragmented. Via DiskWarrior rebuild the directory
and finally not been able to access the drive I reformatted the drive via fire-wire drive.
Re-started the powerbook holding C to boot up from DVD - nothing
Re-started again and it give me one long beep and black screen. An indication that my 1gig RAM is bad or gone (?) and the DVD is stuck inside.
Bought new one 1 gig, installed it and now I'm getting only three beeps.
I tried all, changed the slots several times and nothing.
    I tried more as:
c -- to boot from CD (again while the DVD is still inside and I cannot get it out)
cmd-opt-p-r -- to Zap the PRAM,
cmd-opt-n-v -- to clear NV RAM,
cmd-opt-o-f -- to boot into open firmware … and nothing. The DVD is in and I have
black screen with three beeps and flashing LED.
Do I have to replace the Logic Board?   (Anyone has a spare one ?)
But it is the faulty Logic board?
Could anyone help me out? Please.
I'm retired and I cannot afford a new laptop - and this powerbook was a great, great horse for me until that horrible set of three beeps.
Thank you in advance for any advice and help.

But it is the faulty Logic board?
There was a known issue with LBs in 15-inch PowerBooks with 1.5 and 1.67Ghz processors in which one RAM slot would fail. There once was a repair extension program that fixed the problem at no cost, but it is long-expired.
The problem with seeking a used logic board for these models is that so many had their boards replaced that it increases the chances of the boards in the used/pulled markets having the same problem you have now. The replacement program also came close to exhausting the supply of new boards,
If it turns out to be a bad LB and you can't find a replacement, consider how used computer pricing works: A used computer is worth hugely more in parts than if bought as a working unit. I.E, you can probably find a working PowerBook that will cost less than the logic bard alone. It also possible to find a used MacBook Pro for less that a replacement LB.
If you tell us your approximate geographic location, we can see what's available nearby. I'm also retired, and and visiting my wife's family this week so have even more time than usual to help you search.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • While loging in my Facebook account apple logo shwed up then blue screen then black screen and my phone didnt work ever since . what is that

I searching my Facebook account when apple logo showed up then blue death scree then black screen after all white and black stripped screen . It happened for a few times the the phone went off and didn't work ever since . What was that ?
And how can it be solved ?

Back up and restore your software via iTunes. If the problem continues, restore as a NEW device. If this solves it, that means there is some corruption in your backup file, or maybe it's one of your apps causing the trouble. If the problem is still there, you should take it to the Genius Bar at an Apple Store for evaluation.
    For the charging problem:
Inspect the charging port area for dirt/debris/fluff build-up that may be preventing a good connection and use a wooden toothpick, soft clean toothbrush, or a can of compressed air to clean it. Also look for bent or broken pins. Try another cable and/or charger block (be sure to always use a genuine Apple certified brand) in a known good outlet. If you're using a USB port, try another port. If you're using a hub, try a direct connection. If you're using a USB port in the front of a desktop computer, try one in the back. If all these fail, make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar to have the device evaluated.

  • MSI GE70 botting and then black screen :(

    Hello!
I recently got my laptop back from service repair, because it had Hard drive problems, and HDD was changed with new one.
But today, when I was playing a game, the PC froze, so i turned it off and now, I get to windows bootup sequence, and then black screen :(.
Is there anything that could be done, or I would need to send it back to service repair and wait anohter month to get it back?
    Kind regards.

Same problem here. The update killed my video. Tried rebooting three times. The audio is fine. I hear the reboot audio. I hear clicks when I press buttons on the remote. But, there's a blank screen.

  • Torch 9810 slow red flashing light then black screen

    Hi,
My phone is over 1 year old, so its not covered by Wind provider warranty. its 15 months now. One day, I plugged into the computer, it was doing an OS update, then froze at 30%. ever since, it is flashing red a few times then nothing... complete black screen. I tried it on different computers and even went to retail store and they tried it, nothing. They said its a blackberry OS issue and need to restore to factory OS and let it do update again. how do i do this? I know its not battery issue because we tried other good batteries. help!!

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Please refer to this official download portal as you proceed. It is sorted first by carrier -- so if all you want are the OS levels your carrier supports, your search will be quick. However, some carriers are much slower than others to release updates. To truly seek out the most up-to-date OS package for your BB, you must dig through and find all carriers that support your specific model BB, and then compare the OS levels that they support.
    http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
From a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. After installing the OS package to your PC, please remeber to delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
    C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
You may also want to investigate the use of BBSAK (bbsak.org) to perform the wipe it is capable of.
You may also want to try the "Bare Bones OS Reload Procedure" to attempt to narrow down the precise causal item:
Load your OS "bare bones"...if anything is optional, do not install it.
If the behavior presents immediately, then try a different OS with step 1
If the behavior does not immediately present, then run for as long as it takes for you to be sure that the behavior will not present.
Add one thing -- no matter how tempting, just one.
If the behavior does not present immediately, then again run for long enough to be sure it will not have the same problem
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all things are loaded or the behavior presents
When the behavior presents, you know the culprit...the last thing you loaded.
If the behavior does not re-present, then you know that either step 1 or 2 cured it.
If the behavior presents no matter what, then you likely have a hardware level issue for which no amount of OS or software can cure.

If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • Boot Camp won't boot Win 7 DVDs /Cloned disks - White cursor flashes once then Black Screen of Death.

    Hi Guys,
I am having a serious issue with my machines ability to use boot camp. Here's what happend: I had Win 7 installed on the BOOTCAMP partition for a long while, then one day my HD crashed. So naturally I got my HD replaced from Apple and got Lion reinstalled and wokring flawlessly. Then I planned to get my Boot Camp going again, but my computer has a will against it I swear.  So I run Boot Camp Assistant , create the parition and reboot. At this point I have my Win 7 disk burned using Disk utility in the drive, I am using a dvd disk image from Microsofts online store.  I reboot and the computer hangs at the "pick a harddrive" grey for a second. Then the DVD drive spins up and I get a black screen, then for ever so slight a moment there is a flash of a white _ a the top left, then flash , nothing, the screen remains illumniated. Now I tried this multiple times , let it run over night , and nothing. Its almost as if my laptop will no longer boot the style of dvd that win 7 is.
Being a diagnostics first type of a person I tested all the variables, the win 7 cd works fine in other macbook pros. My computer boots other mac os x DVDs without a problem.  I also tried using winclone to create a copy of another machines Boot Camp and flash it to my BOOT CAMP drive but this has the exact same result! Therefore it seems that the underlying system that runs my Macs ability to boot from Windows-style? partitions and dvd is broken. I also tried installing rEFIt, but that doesn't seem to help. I also tried booting off of an external USB drive with the same result. I tried zapping p-ram , scm and doing all software updates.
Has anyone expereinced anything like this? Anyone found resolution to a similar issue? Any other tricks related to Macs EFI and boot process that I could use to debug this? Anywhere that EFI stores logs possibly?
I went to the Apple's Genius Bar and they were stumped on my issue. I felt that they should be able to fix it considering it booted fine before I had Apple replace my HD.
Thanks to any responders, I'm really hitting my head on the table now and would love some help.

Have you reset the PRAM? It should usually be done when replacing any hardware. Have you got the latest EFI firmware for your Mac?
Not knowing what model /YEAR your MBP is (not that it would help me too much but the other fellas probably would) it's hard to guess as there are issue's for different models. The only thing I could find was it's usually caused by a non-conforming video driver. Microsoft had a page on it I found by accident and now I can't find it!
WinClone hasn't been updated by the original author in over a year, others have tweeked it a little to work with W7 but seems to be semi reliable, so the be aware.
Unless the other MBP's are identical in Model AND year your putting older or incompatible drivers on your MBP. Boot Camp, (especially if your using the drivers on the original install disks, like 10.6 and earlier) will only install for that specific computer. Just like the OS installer.
    EDIT:
Oh yeah, are you sure you have the partition formatted the right way, thats another black screen problem.

  • ATV shows intro sequence, then black screen (but sound)

Hi, hope something can help - I am really stuck! I've had my aTV for a long time, working well, now at latest software. Yesterday, it had frozen, and when restarting it, small text scrolled across the screen with multiple error messages. This looped endlessly, and restarting just got the same thing. Tried reset, diagnostics said everything OK, restart just looped the error messages, and I finally resorted to factory reset.
When I start it now, it shows the (first version) intro sequence till the end, then the screen goes black. Pressing buttons on the remote produces the "ping", though, but no picture. After a while, the screen saver with stock photos start, and they display! I've tried menu+up to cycle through various HDMI resolutions, and they all show me the logo, but as soon as I choose a setting, it goes back again.
Anyone experienced this before, or have any ideas for a solution?

    Hi, thanks for responding!
I've tried the problem-solving procedures I know of - reset, change resolution, factory reset, but none change the fact that everything seems to work OK except there are no menus displayed. Any other measures that could be tried?
    Not that I'm aware of.
I did at some point have aTV Flash installed, but not lately.
My understanding is that these modifications are removed when doing a factory restore but I don't know that for certain, and using one might potentially void the warranty if there were features of unsupported modifications on the AppleTV.
We have to assume that your installation has become corrupted somehow - I don't think there's a simple remedy here - if factory restoring fails then there must be a problem affecting the shipping software image too.
You might try some unofficial forums relating to modifications to see if anyone has any suggestions.

  • Using Earphones, then black screen

Anyone else having this problem on their 4s w IOS6? I'm talking on the phone using my headphones, then my screen goes black (which is okay). But, when I want to hang up, I can't get back to the phone call screen. IOS5 used to allow me to just touch the screen to bring it back up. Now, I have to punch the home button, then swipe, then hang up. More of a hassle!

  • Grey apple with spinning wheel... then black screen!

I just got done building up a G4 dual 450. I added a superdrive, second 120GB HDD and 1.5 GB of pc133 ram. It also has a 20 GB HDD that has Tiger installed on it and nothing else.
When I bought this machine it booted up fine. Now I have added these other pieces and it boots up to the grey apple with the spinning wheel, then goes to a black screen (I can still hear the HDD spinning up from time to time), at which time I do my Mr. Bill impression.
I have tried PMU reset, nvram reset, and zapped the pram. FSCK says the volume appears to be fine. When I boot into startup mode it recognizes the 20GB HDD with the X on it, as well as the Tiger install disk in the superdrive. When I go to boot from the DVD it sits on the grey screen with the twirling wheel forever.
I pulled the RAM from another machine in which it worked fine. I have removed the airport and disconnected the second, unformatted HDD. I am not sure what else to try! Does anyone have any other ideas I can try?

    Hi, ijwebb!
Sounds like a drive jumper setting conflict...
I'd recheck the hard drive jumper settings to insure that one drive is properly set to master and the other to slave.
The optical drive pins normally are set to master. I'd check this as well.
If you need help in confirming the settings, let us know what the hard drive brands are and one of the Members can advise the correct settings to use.

  • My mbp 2009 boots with chime then black screen

    Good New Year folks
Today, I turned on my mbp and the problem is, it chimes, boots up then the screen goes black.
The caps lock key lights up, the volume control makes the usual noise going up and down.
    I have no keyboard illumination.
Pressing various keys on the top row might show my home screen but it disappears after a second or two.
I have spent a few hours searching and my head is spinning, as I'm not so hot with these things.
Please could anyone give me some help as what to try as the repair centre is a 120 mile drive from here and if it's toast I won't waste my time and fuel.
    Many thanks in advance
    Gordy

    Many thanks for your reply.
Earlier I tried connecting a monitor to the mbp and its still the same. No display on that either.
So I guess it's not the display.
I did boot the mbp up an hour later and it's working fine now
I have'nt tried switching it off yet and it's been on for an hour or so.
The burning question now is, will this be an intermittent problem and who know what will happen when I reboot it again.
Anyway, thanks again for your help

My iBook g4 12" 1.33 Ghz doesn't want to boot into the system.

    2. Apple logo on grey background appears
    3. Spinning wheel below Logo appears
    4. Screen flicker, big vertical zigzag appears, black screen (backlight is on)

    5. Attached an external monitor, which doesn't get a signal

    9. Start in single-mode (see image http://www.somethingonline.org/dl/pb/singlemode.jpg)
Don't know what else to try
    Any help appreciated

    Markus:
Run Hardware test over DVD - Diagnostics all fine (Screen fine all the time, running through all diagnostics)
Your issues seems rather strange. From the statement quoted above, am I to understand that when you boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk you are able to see the tests running on the monitor, but when you attempt booting from the install disk you cannot see anything on the monitor? If that is so, it seems rather odd that you can boot from one and not from the other.
Mounted iBook drive as external drive with target mode - Other computer boots fine with iBook drive.
When you booted in FW-TDM which computer was Target and which was host? Sounds like you were able to use the iBook as the host computer with the other as Target. Try it the other way around with the iBook in Target Mode and the other computer as Host. Then launch Disk Utility and run Repair Disk on the iBook, selecting the iBook's HDD (manufacturer's ID) in the sidebar. Post back with results. If you are able to do so download and run SMART Utility - 2.0.2 for a reading on the HDD. I am not sure if it will work with the iBook as a FW drive, but it gives more information about the HDD than Disk Utility, which only gives a Verified or Failed status.
    Good luck.
