Red patches using RAW in Aperture

I seem to be getting red patches in my RAW files taken using a Canon 30D. I think its something to do with the exposure in Aperture but it only occurs with RAWs. It does not show up in JPEGs.
Anyone have any clue as to what might be causing this?

If you use Auto Exposure, you may see the red "hot" areas increase notably. At least to my taste, in the setup for the 30D the Auto Exposure button often bumps exposure way too much. I end up not using that much. The Auto Levels buttons are much more useful.

I'm using a 5D with a G5 and having nothing but problems. I have aperture installed on my Powerbook and don't have any problems. Upload fine and everything. But as soon as i try and upload photos on my G5 it's terrible. They preview fine before import.
but afterwards they're corrupt.

XSI RAW to Aperture via DNG not working

I just got the Digital Rebel XSI and have been using Aperture for my JPEGs on my P&S camera and was hoping to finally shoot in RAW. From what I understand XSI's RAW is not supported in Aperture so I tried to batch convert RAW to DNG using Adobe Digital Negative Converter. However, Aperture did not accept these DNG files and said the file format was unsupported any thoughts on how I can get XSI's RAW into Aperture?

First off thanks for all your help. If you haven't figured I'm an amateur newbie who's trying to take the next step to being an advanced amateur with getting the XSI. I've been using Aperture for my jpegs on my P&S camera since I prefer it's organizational tools to those in iPhoto.
So now my "workflow" (I always think of that as a professional word and feel funny using it as an amateur) right now is to shoot in RAW and convert to DNG for including in Aperture and save the RAW files. If I later want to import the RAW files can I "overwrite" the DNGs with the corresponding RAW files and preserve whatever editing/touchups I did on the DNGs? Or will I have to reedit the RAW files again later?

As per your error message, there is problem with the SDM is not starting after finishing deployment on SAP J2EE Engine Deployment. Development component are not deployed properly due to error message

Please check the default timeout and increased as requred.

Vuescan RAW as Aperture 2.0 DNG?

Hi all,
I'm tempted to buy Vuescan and change my scanning workflow so that I can save my scans as RAW's.
It's being advertised that Aperture can now see RAW files that are not (yet) natively supported by Apple in the 2.0 DNG 'mode'.
- can someone who uses both programs please confirm this?
- how good are the Vuescan RAW files?
- how big are the files in 300 dpi for 24 x 36 cm?
- can someone please post a Vuescan RAW to play with in Aperture?

Vuescan DNG RAW files cannot be read by Aperture 2. Vuescan can also save RAW as tif but using them in Aperture 2 is not really possible.Extremely slow.
Adobe Camera RAW and Lightroom can read them swiftly and it works very well.
To use them in Aperture, I (batch) convert to tif in Lightroom or ACR.
I can either adjust them in LR or ACR before exporting, or I can export them straight and adjust in Aperture.
I scan 24x36mm slides using a Nikon 8000 at 4000 dpi and the files are about 57mb both as tif and DNG!
The reason I started scanning RAW with Vuescan is that I do batch scans and then can always adjust only the files I want to work with using Lightroom.
To make a long story longer, using the Nikon Scan software I can also save the files as NEF but these are NOT the same as NEF RAW camera files and they are only useful using Nikon Capture NX and again converting to tif.

Is there any support for Canon 7D s-raw in Aperture 2?

I'm using PowerBook G4, and I start to use Aperture 2. Aperture 2 supports the raw files, but does not support s-raw and m-raw. Can it be solved?

You could try the free Adobe DNG converter (Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh), if it can convert your D600 raws. Aperture usually works with DNG files created by DNG converter, if the “Convert to Linear Image” optionis turned off.

Prove it: try to create file large than 2Gb on 8.1.6 under Linux (under NT it works) and try to use raw partitions. About Pmon ORA-601 simply check Metalink.
I know Oracle, it is my work. I like Oracle database. I think, Linux is the best OS. But i want Oracle to solve current bugs more quickly, for a customers could not say "Oracle on Linux - it ***** ". Have you applied any in-camera processing to your photos? Like "Preserve Highlights"?
When you import raw images into Aperture, you will see the camera generated preview, that is embedded into your raw file, while Aperture is importing the raw file. Once the file has been imported, Aperture will create its own thumbnails and previews.
The camera generated, embedded jpeg will reflect all in-camera processing of the raw, but the final image in Aperture will not show this. Aperture uses only the naked raw, as directly recorded by the sensor. If you want the camera processing, import jpegs and not raw.

Getting 2 different stories about what is going on would bother me too. I don't know what would take a week to test. If they are overwhelmed with work orders then they should say so.
Using your case #, I would ask for a manager. Be polite but firm. You have waited way too long on this and Apple should give you something for your troubles. There have been instances where people have gotten bags, etc where Apple screwed up. It happens in every company. Make the case that you have been out of a computer all this time.

Using tethering in Aperture

When using tethering in Aperture, is it possible to have the shots appear behind a pre-designed layout for composition control?

Allen -- Frank and Neil have giving excellent answers. Personally, I found Betty Edwards lessons to be better than her science. You might also look for Harold Speed's book on drawing (was available in a Dover edition), as well as (in a different vein) James Watrous' excellent "The Craft of Old Master Drawings". But the _very best_ advice I can give you is: don't read; draw. Just get a bunch of #2 pencils (with erasers, they have always been used), and _draw every day_. Drawing is a skill. Skill increases through repetition and active engagement. For adults, the biggest hurdle is accepting that they draw with the skill of someone who has rarely drawn (hence the exercises to "short-circuit" the squelcher in your brain). Start with ... carrots. Peel them, cut them into 1/2 to 3" lengths, set three or four pieces before you, and copy their outlines and the edges between the flat faces left by the peeler. Concentrate on the angle of the lines on the paper (vertical, horizontal, by how much), and how they correspond to the 3D forms of the carrot pieces. This is hard, but your drafting skills will have given you the (invaluable) ability to imagine forms in space. Set in the corner of your eye a meter gauging when the paper is _activated_. I'm not going to define that -- you'll have to feel for it. Learn how to tingle this awareness, and tingle it constantly.
When you feel comfortable with this, set the carrots up on a piece of paper, and after your first drawing, rotate the paper 30° and do a second drawing.
Other variations will occur to you.
And in the meantime, carry a sketchbook with you and when you see an interesting leaf, draw it.
When you're ready to try plants you'll know.
Drawing animals is hard. Start with sleeping ones.
Drawing people is _very very very hard_.
To repeat the important parts:
- draw _often_. Frequency is more important than duration. As Michelangelo said to his students: "Not a day without a line!"
- be kind with yourself. No-one was born drawing well (drawing prodigies are extremely rare -- Durer was one).
- carry a sketchbook
- stick with one tool for a good bit. Pencil is great. If you prefer something else, use it.
- learn to create form (the effect of 3D) with line. Shading comes later.
- _activate_ the page on which you draw. Red-line that little meter in the corner of your eye.
When you have schooled your hand and judgement by such diligence, you will acquire rapidity before you are aware of it.

Geotagging and use raw as original

I've updated to Photos 1.0 (219.52.0) and I've got two questions:
- I haven't found a way to modify or add location to pictures so I guess this feature is not in Photos (yet?). Which other app would you suggest to geotag?
- In a few cases I have both a jpg and a raw but the menu "use raw as original" is always disabled: how can I enable it? is photos storing both jpg and raw in iCloud library? In this case, is there a way to delete the jpg version?

You are correct - there currently is no way to add or change locations in Photos - HoudahGeo offers that for iPhoto and is working on it for Photos but is waiting for the proper hooks in Photo - for now it is a good program for adding location outside of pHotos - or you can go back to using iPhoto (or Aperture) until this is added to Photos
As to editing select the photo and under the image menu click "use RAW for editing

I ordered my Macbook Air with Aperture two years ago. I now have an iMac - can I use that with Aperture in any way? I appreciate that it is a different computer but I am now the end user of both devices and I was just wondering if it was possible.

The answer would be in your software license agreement for Aperture. However if you cannot locate it you can ask in the Aperture forum, the link for that is:

However I believe you can have Aperture installed on two machines however only one may be using it at a time.
On the new iMac launch the Mac App Store - Purchased - look for Aperture and download to your new machine.

10g RAC - should I use RAW, OCFS and/or ASM ?

I am about to install 10G RAC on RHAS3. Options for sharing disk partitions are raw, OCFS and ASM. The OCR and voting files must be raw or OCFS, I would tend to go for OCFS in this case. For the Oracle datafiles, again, I would tend to go for OCFS simply for ease of management since ASM seems to add another layer of complexity, and raw lacks flexibility. OCFS however is also new technology and may still have some stability issues. I'm not yet sure of our disk configuration, but there will be HBA cards in each machine with one or two SAN partitions, so I don't expect some of the ASM features such as mirroring etc. will be required as this will be done in the hardware. Does anyone have any recommendations or experiences(good or bad) in which way to go ?

We're using raw partitions for some years now, (since oracle 8i, then 9i and now 10g). It is quite flexible, but you shouldn't use physical partitions but LVM. It's very stable.
Now on 10g we're using ASM on some sites where mirroring is needed. It works, but not so stable as raw. we discover some bugs as well.
We've never used OCFS. I don't like it. To much limits. I belive that special utilities are needed for managing files. I don't like linux system software produced by oracle.

Error while reading raw file created in previous task using raw file destination

I am reading a flat file and creating an raw file using raw file destination. path of the raw file is in a variable. now I am reading the raw file using the rawfile source component. I am able to execute if the .raw file is available. But
when we deploy into the production the .raw will be created runtime, so the package is getting failed while evualting the variable which hold the path of the variable. since the .raw is not available i am not able to proceed further. it's in ssis 2008

I am also using a raw file destination using a variable.
I have set DelayValidation = true on both the DataFlow task and even the Sequence Container.
I get the same error when I run the entire ssis package, however
when I run the individual container or individual task it runs without an error.
Also, something interesting is the error is not the same path as the variable name.
Warning: The system cannot find the file specified.
Error: File "C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Local\Temp\GUIDNumber\\RawFileName" cannot be opened for reading. Error may occur when there are no privileges or the file is not found. Exact cause is reported in previous error message.
The variable is "C:\Temp\ProjectName\RawFileName"
I have other RawFile sources in this same project, but only this one file is giving me grief.
Any other suggestions? Is this a bug?
Have you set an expression for connection string property of raw file? Is it based on variable/expression or configuration? If yes, check the value of variable/ expression or configuraton item at runtime by putting a breakpoint in the pre execute event of task
and make sure path value its getting is correct. It may be that path is getting a different value at runtime due to expression/configuration set for it.
