Red/redcode/ cameras in general

Hi, I want to buy a new high end camera, I was looking at panavision genisis and the sony fw900(i think thats what it's called) but then I came across RED. Although this is still expensive with the accesories It isn't as expensive as the others. I want to shoot a feature film and I have a reasonably large budget to get a camera with. Why is red cheaper, but appears to be masses better? anybody got any camera suggestions?
thanks

  • RED ONE camera to FCP to compressor for DVD

My client used RED ONE camera for filming. He used FCP to edit it then exported it in 1920x1080 Apple ProRes 422 (HQ). He sent it to me by mail (external HD) for me to use that QT movie Apple ProRes 422 for Compressor to compress it into SD DVD MPEG-2 5.0 2-pass with Progressive (Best Quality). I used DVD Studio Pro and found it very unsatisfied with the quality of video because I'm seeing a lot of pixels around those letters during open/close credits. Not only that, I also see a lot of bad interlaced video. I set it up for Progressive and YET I'm still seeing interlaced in it. What's did I do wrong? How can I make it the best quality video for SD DVD from Red One camera or Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)? I know Blue-ray is the best answer but a lot of my costumers don't own blue-ray dvd player. (I'm sure you're aware that HD DVD don't work on any DVD players, only on Mac computer which is very unfortunate for me!) Please help! I'm flirting the deadline right now:)

    1. Take your sequence into an uncompressed 720x480 16x9 anamorphic sequence. It needs to be 720x480 first since thats the resolution of NTSC DVD - create a 720x480 uncompressed 16x9 anamorphic sequence
    2. With a bitrate calculator, you would need to determine the best bitrate. How long is your DVD? (include menus as well) plug it into the calc. here's a good one:
    http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm
    3. Export out through compressor as an MPEG2 file and the bitrates from above. make sure you match field order of your source if interlaced
    4. Import into DVDSP and author away

  • Premiere CS4 installer to support Red's camera build v20

Any estimate/date when the new Premiere CS4 installer to support Red's camera build v20 will be out?
The new Red API is released and just a matter of Adobe integrating. (FCP already has released it!)
    many thanks....Dave

Thanks for the quick replies guys.....
I've spoken to the developer at Red who is indicating the release date is dependant on Adobe.
Now whether that suggests acceptance/integration testing (or development) by Adobe, I assume Adobe is on the critical path for the release this plugin...hence question. any further information greatly appreciated.
    Dave,
edit: cheers Curt. The v20 plugin deals with noise, particularly in low light tungsten scenes which starves the blue channel of any signal, hence the noise.
Red say 20% of the corrected code in the camera firmware (build v20) and 80% is in their software API which has been since released in other Red products and Final Cut.
Makes a huge difference in picture quality so great to see it in Premiere.

  • RED One camera: is someone using it and how?

I'm curious to find out more about users editing RED One footage in Final Cut Pro on Mac. All I saw was a demo at the Apple booth at IBC in Amsterdam in September.
I browsed their MacPro a bit but I couldn'f figure out what RAW images were used.
    What are the REDCODE experiences?
    What are the prores results?

One very cool thing is that the RED Camera creates quicktime wrappers for it's native .R3D files so that you can immediately watch back the 4K clips by using proxy files. So if you have, say, a MacBook Pro on set when you are shooting, you can download the files from the memory card and view them in realtime using a 2K, 1K, or .5K proxy.

    Greetgins,
    babdi,
thank you for your kind reply.
OK so that what is it called , picture noise
it does not have "night mode" in video , only in PHOTO mode it does, when i switch to PHOTO mode night mode the picture noise vanishes.
    therefore you are absolutely right.
    thank you soooo much,
    have a great day,

  • How to injest RED ONE camera footage in FCP?

    Hi there,
I have downloaded the necessary drivers from the RED website and I am expecting to receive the files from the director off of his hard drive this week.
What should I be expecting in terms of files for an offline edit? Is there a link or process to view the steps to inject into FCP?
    Thanks!
    Steven

I am a whatever works for you guy...but at the same time I think it's important to consider once you are working with Red or 10bit source PRHQ may be your friend.
    RED FCP Whitepaper:
Method 1: Transcoding to ProRes 422
You may choose to transcode R3D media to ProRes 422 or ProRes 422 (HQ) compressed QuickTime files. ProRes 422 is suitable for creating lower-quality files for offline editing, but ProRes 422 (HQ) is recommended for higher-quality mastering. You can set this up by opening the Log and Transfer window’s Import Preferences dialog.
    • ProRes 422 (HQ) – Suitable for ingest and mastering of high-quality chroma- subsampled/YʼCbCr color space media for high definition broadcast masters.
    • ProRes 422 – Suitable for ingest and mastering of high-quality chroma-subsampled/ YʼCbCr color space media for standard definition broadcast masters, or good-quality mastering at HD resolutions.
This workflow describes transcoding your REDCODE media to 2K resolution Apple ProRes clips, and then mastering using Apple ProRes.
    • Advantage — This is a straightforward workflow with no reconforming necessary. Editing using the Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) codec is simple and efficient, especially for programs that are destined for output to a YʼCbCr-based tape format.

    Hi dhamot,
It might be worth you trying to do the following resets:
    Soft Reset:
Enter into your keypad *#7780# and when prompted, enter the default passcode 12345. If you have changed the code, it will be the code you changed it to.
A backup will not be needed as this will not delete any data.
    Hard Reset:
This will erase all data on your device, so a backup is recommended before you do this.
Once backed up, enter *#7370# and when prompted, enter 12345 as the default passcode.
Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

  • PS CS3 images far more red than Camera Raw 4.6

Consistently when opening images in Photoshop CS3 the image as viewed in PS and LR 3.6 is considerably redder than in Camera Raw 4.6 and the Save-for-Web image displayed in Firefox. I principally want my images to be suitable for print media but want then to display properly on the web. Various screenshots attached. My proof setup is set to the monitor icc file. Monitor is a LaCuie 321 calibrated using LaCie Blue Eye. What do I trust? Any input much appreciated.

i am pretty sure Windows Print Screen function embeds its default monitor profile (your posted images don't contain a profile so either you opened/resaved them w/o the profile or i am wrong) perhaps a Windows user can let us know if Windows screenshots contain an embedded monitor profile
embedding the profile is desirable because it will show us what you are seeing
i suspect you have Photoshop Edit> Color Settings> Color Management Polices 'broken' for lack of a better term
for now, try these settings: 3 Preserve Embedded Profiles and 3 Ask checked boxes, quit and reopen Photoshop
that will alert you to any profile mismatches and may expose at lease one of the problems
then run another test to see if Photoshop displays a Profile Mismatch warning when Ps opens your raw document from ACR
if Ps does hit a warning, the correct move will be Use embedded profile

  • DSLR cameras in general

I have never owned a DSLR but now that they shoot HD video, I have started to think about it.
Just one impression stands out over everything else. Am I correct? Is this a huge TRAP? I see the ad from B&H for the Nikon D600 Full-Frame SLR Camera. The body is $2,099.95 and with a lens it is $2,699.95. OK. I get it. The camera costs $2,699.95. I can almost afford that.
    Or can I ?????
If I have one lens, my guess is that it will not be the "right" lens, so I have to go spend $1,000.00 on the "right". Oh no! The next shoot comes along and I need a different lens. This one costs $2,000.00.
This keeps going on and on and then I have 10 lenses worth $20,0000 and everything is fine until I buy the next camera body. You say that the lenses fit? Sure they do. But they are not good enough because they are designed for HD and the new body shoots Ultra HD.  Didn't this happen going from SD to HD?
    AAArrrrrggggg!!!!
    Or am I wrong?
This seems like a horrible trap for a hobbyist to get into. Is it?

    @John
I am a hobbyist, and I bought one of the very first Sony HDR-FX1 HDV video cameras just for the fun of being one of the first, and because I felt like I deserved a 3CCD camera. I had been using a Canon ZR-1. A nice little DV camera with one chip. Sure, I had made some money writing books and producing tutorials that more than paid for the camera and the PC I needed to get the most out of it. When I bought the camera, Premiere Pro hadn't even a chance at editing HDV. It was a couple of months before Cineform came to the rescue.
I just looked up the order to B&H in NYC. I paid $3,499 for the camera, $150 for the extended warranty (which paid off when my 1394 port blew out) another $150 for the bag to carry it in, $150 for 72mm filters, another $150 for the charger and larger battery. Back then, the recommended HDV tapes were $13.99 each! I bought ten.
The bill came to $4,304 including tax. Keep in mind that this was the cheapest place to buy it that was reliable.
All I can say when I look back on this is: Wow! What was I thinking? But you know, I have had a lot of fun with it. I mean really. What is the point of a hobby if you don't have any fun?
I am just afraid that starting down the road to DSLR will get me to the point where I want something like this: Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens
I know my wife loves me. She really does. So I am certain that she would make sure that the insane asylum she committed me to was clean, and nice, with lots of light and maybe a decent view.

  • My iPod has two small dots on it. The first one is red and the other is white. The red one came first and a few weeks later the white one showed up. Can I take it to the Apple store and have it exchanged?

I've had it for less than a year and noticed a few weeks ago that it had a red dot on the center of the screen. About a week ago I noticed another dot, a white one, right next to it. I've never dropped it and even went out of my way to buy a decent case to keep it safe. I spent over 200$ on my 4Gen iPod Touch it and I'm very concerned that these dots will spread across my screen. Can I send it to the Apple store by me and have it replaced?

Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store and find out. If defective, within warranty and not abused Apple may exchange it at no cost.

  • RED ONE digital camera...

Has anyone used a RED digital camera with FCP?
    RED Camera specs: http://www.red.com/cameras/tech_specs/
If so, how does FCP handle those resolutions (4900 x 2580) and frame rates (120 fps)? I watched a recent BluRay (Red Dwarf - Back to Earth) and was VERY impressed with the quality -- apparent RED camera's were used to shoot the footage. These cameras cost a fraction of the $250,000 Movie studio cameras at somewhere around $20,000-$25,000 US.
Would love to hear from anyone who's had experience with this camera and even more so someone who's worked on post production footage.
    Thanks, Rob.

Yes the RedOne is a fantastic camera, but as Shane pointed out, it is really a professional tool meant to replace 35mm - not HD video. That isn't to say it can't be done - and it will certainly make some super nice HD video, but the cost of entry is still pretty high, even if it is much less than a comparable film camera (and all the processing/scanning involved there).
More important than the 4k numbers though is the fact that it shoots what is effectively RAW video - allowing for a lot of post processing/grading/vfx. Check out District 9 - while not all of it was shot on Red (the docu stuff was done on an HD Sony camera I believe - a much less $$ one than Red) a lot of the FX sequences were.
Keep a lookout for the Red Scarlet which should be available soon. That will offer 3k in a much smaller and more "prosumer" friendly package, without sacrificing the RAW capabilities. They are going to be making special "mini-prime" lenses for it too - should be a great replacement for DSLRs shooting H264.

  • Dynamic range of the color red in RAW files.

I have seen this issue with my 70D and my SX-50 so it seems to be an issue with Canon cameras in general (I don't know if other camera makes have this too). Whenever I photograph something that has the color red (for me I often photograph birds) the jpegs look fine but I always start with post processing of RAW files. Anywhere the red color is found I find the color saturates out very easily. I use Adobe Photoshop Essentials (PSE) for post processing and cannot get the RAW adjusted/processed to look anywhere as good as the jpeg as detail is lost when red saturates out. This is not a problem with any other color.
For now I end up opening the jpeg as RAW in PSE and start my adjustments there which give me a better picture with finer detail than starting with the original RAW file. I will post this same question in the PSE forum to see who else noticed this and what their work around is.

Re: " All digital cameras suffer from over saturation of the red channel. It is just the way they are. It doesn't matter whether it is CCD or a CMOS sensored camera."
Just for the record I have owned 1Ds2, 1Ds3, every version of 5D, etc and all have had red issued.
I now also own a Nikon D610 and there is no such issue of over saturation of the red channel in RAW. This is one reason that I shoot the Nikon over the 6D almost all the time. The added DR goes a long way. The D610 files are just easier to work with and a lot faster to reach a final image. Desaturating the red channel on the Canon files obviously causes other issues.
I am impatiently waiting for Canon to put out a camera with a comparable sensor.
