Red shift

I'm sure my question has been asked before but I can't find a reference to it using the forum search function. I'd be grateful to know how I can avoid images returning to CS4 showing a red tint.
It happens, for example, when I make a screen grab of an image in CS4, save it as a tif, and then open the saved screengrab in CS4. The image looks markedly less-red tint - particularly noticeable in blues compared to the original image still open in CS4. Images made in Corel Painter also show this red shift when they are opened in CS4.
My color settings are sRGB, Dot Gain 20% and RGB: Convert to Working RGB.
I am using a NEC 2690 LCD display which is uncalibrated because it is a wide color gamut display and I am using it in its factory set sRGB mode (which cannot be hardware calibrated).
Thanks for any advice on this.

You are making a common error made with screen grabs that is not explained
very often. Here's a way to deal with it:
1) make the screen grab and save it to a file.
2) open the file in Photoshop.
3) assign (don't convert) your monitor display profile to the screen grab.
The red cast should go away at this point.
4) convert the screen grab to sRGB, or if the image is not destined for the
web, use your preferred working color space.
If the red cast remains, then rebuild your monitor profile, either by using
a calibration device (practical but relatively expensive at $200).
Another way to calibrate your monitor is by displaying a known good sRGB
image (look on drycreekphoto.com for examples) and adjusting your monitor
manually until the appearance matches your expectations. Then assign sRGB
as your system monitor profile.
If you use either of these procedures (device based or manual) to target
your monitor to sRGB, your screen grabs will be de facto sRGB. There will
be no difference between your screen grabs and the appearance of the image
in Photoshop, and no need to assign your monitor profile.

I'm getting a red shift on my black text (especially on uprights). It looks like convergence problem on a CRT and is most noticeable on the menu items at the top of the screen.
Have others experience this and is it fixable?

  • How to print red color in plain paper?

When printed on glossy papers, red color (in photo or text) looks great.
When I print on non-photo, plain papers, red color came out brownish.
I tried on premium ink jet papers, it does not print red but in brown color.
How can I print red color in plain paper?

When dealing with printing ink, R=100m+100y+0c+0k. What drives the color toward rust, maroon, and brown is the addition of c to the mix. That may be the result of the diffuse reflection of the uncoated paper surface, its absorb rate, the ink chemistry and – the light source. Since the easiest variable to test is the light source, look at that color using a source weak in blue emission, incandescent light, and watch the red shift. Remember also that the reflected color will never be as bright as paper it is printed on. Each ink film is a filter subtracting light from the paper reflection.

  • Color "shifts" in iPhoto '06

I recently upgraded to iLife '06, and have noticed that my photos do not look anything they looked like with iPhoto '05. There seems to be a red shift in the colors, as well as an unatural saturation applied to the images. I have read several other posts indicating the same thing.
The strange thing is, that when I open the image in PS Elements 3, the colors are natural. When I use iPhoto to compose an e-mail, the colors seem natural. When I import a photo into iMovie, again, the colors seem natural.
I used to use iPhoto '05 for simple photo corrections, and PS elements for more complex work. With this situation with '06, it looks like I am forced to do everything with PS elements.
It is ashamed that my '06 version now simply becomes a storage facility. I was really looking forward to using '06's editing tools.
Seems like I'm babbling, but could this be a bug with the program? I am starting to regret that I made the upgrade to '06. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Q: Thanks for your patience.....
Ok, that's not what I meant. This checkbox just tells
iphoto whether or not to ADD a colour profile to your
images if they don't already have one.
What I meant was do the images already contain a
colour profile BEFORE you import them into iPhoto
(eg. is your camera adding a colour profile to them).
If you open the image in Preview BEFORE you import it
into iPhoto and Get Info it will tell you if there is
a Colorsyc Profile already in the image or not.
My photos have been imported from multiple cameras (Olympus 700UZ, Canon G5, Panasonic FZ-20 & Canon 300D), and I have just used the default setting. I'll take a look in preview and see what is happening with any assigned profiles.
I do not use color management with PS elements
By this I assume you mean that it is turned off under
    "Color Settings..."
    Correct.
With preview, the images seem OK.
id you preview an image that was in the iPhoto
library (eg. dragged it into Preview from iphoto) or
are you previewing an image before it's imported into
    iphoto?
I previewed the image before importing
In iPhoto, the images do not look normal at all. I
tried zooming, re-importing, and still no luck.
Did you try editing? Try moving one of the levels
sliders in and back out again and then pressing done.
This should resave the file, does the image look any
    different after doing this?
I did try editing, and it does look different, but I would hate to do this to all of my images.
The command and option key - is that a risky move?
Although I have my images backed up, it was a
    time
consuming process to re-import them all (I have a
    little over 3000 images)
iPhoto will pop up a dialog asking what you want to
rebuild. The more boxes you tick, the longer it will
take. I am not sure if it will help your problem at
this point however. But if you do decide to give it a
try, reboot before hand just to be sure that
    ColorSync is functioning correctly.
Have you tried simply rebooting to see if newly
imported images still exhibit the same problem?
I tried rebooting, and same thing happens.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Canon 6D with EF 17-35 L :: Red, green separation

    Hello everyone,
It's been years since my old 35mm SLR died. I was very excited to buy the new Canon 6D and was looking forward to using my beloved 17-35 L lense. I've taken 1000s of amazing photos with this lens on the 35mm film SLR and was expecting spectacular images from it on the full frame 6D.
Every single photo taken with this lens on the 6D looks terrible. It's easy to see the green and red shifting, especially towards the outer edges.. I have looked online and a few people had very good experience with this 10+ year old lens and their 6D.
Is the lens broken and in need of repair?  Or are the older lenses not truly compatible with the new HDSLRs?
    Thanks for your time!
    -Hooman

I might have found a working solution.
Just tested it in a room with no direct sun shining in and it seems to have worked. There is very slight abberation at f2.8 @ 17mm but the photo is much improvement. How it will perform in sunlight, I am not sure yet.
The photo I posted, the "Lens aberration correction" option in the camera was "ENABLED." However, the "Correction data" was not available.
Because of what you posted, I stumbled on this posting, section Automatic Lens Optimization:
    http://kenrockwell.com/canon/5d-mk-iii/users-guide/index.htm#lensopt
The process described is not exactly the same for Canon 6D but I managed to find my way around. Initially the EF 17-35mm f/2.8 L WAS checked on the list of lenses. This is odd since the camera was reproting that the correction data was NOT avaialble.
Having learned work arounds to various weird software behavior from years of work with PCs, I decided to add my other old lens, EF 75-300 f4-5.6 USM which was not checked on the list. I completed the process and quit the EOS Utility.
And now, the camera is reporting "Correction data avalable" for the EF 17-35mm f/2.8 L and the photos seem to be automatically corrected.  Again, I haven't taken it outside yet, but it seems this might just be the fix.
Also, the profile for the EF 75-300 f4-5.6 USM lens is also now loaded into camera.
    Here's hoping!

  • Color Profile and Color Shift Headache

I am having a terrible time trying to fix a color issue. I have seen suggestions in various discussions. Here's what I have tried:
    Reset PRAM
    Calibrate monitor
    Double checked Univesal Access
    Trashed preferences file
    Tried using other profiles
    Created seperate user account
I even tested to see if the video card or monitor was bad but when I plugged in a Viewsonic LCD display into the ADC port (using a converter) my Hitachi CM721F CRT monitor apparently "slaved" and mirrored off of the Viewsonic profile and everything was fine. When I disconnected the Viewsonic, the problem reappeared. Since then I have also had an Apple Cinema Display hooked up and there was no problem.
In fact, just this evening I was using iPhoto and all my photos had a red shift to them. Out of curiousity I played them as a slideshow and they looked fine. Additionally photo previews in the Finder, when set to column view look fine but when I open in preview I get a red color shift
What exactly is going on here?
    Thank You

    HI
Even if bit depth and color profile aren't related, we can say that a small bit depth (8 bit) can have problems with posterization effects if a large (i.e. ProPhotoRGB) color space is used.
More colors can be "reached" in a large color space, so, if many of them are in a small range of RGB values (XYZ coordinates in color spaces are translated in RGB values at the end), some "near" colors could be "rounded", practically disappearing. So some "posterization" effect could be visible (posterization stands for colors that do not "fade" between them but are clearly separated at the eye).
So, in practical use, a 8-bit color depth is better used with sRGB and AdobeRGB color space, while larger color spaces like ProPhotoRGB need a 16-bit depth. Using "dithering" (random distribution of color pixel) technique can reduce the posterization effect (for Web image for example), but is better to keep the larger color spaces with large bit depth.
    Hope it helps.

  • Clicking "webcam settings" causes skype to crash

Running windows 8 desktop skype, i'm not using that metro "app" nonsense.
It's fully updated, logitech camera drivers fully updated. Every time I click "Webcam Settings" in Skype > Options > Video Settings, the program immediately stops responding and closes.
I NEED to go into webcam settings, for one it's way, way too dark everytime I restart my computer because the settings reset and I'm back to looking like i'm sitting in the dark. This has been happening for a very long time, my solution was to sign into Windows Live Messenger and using the settings window there (It does NOT crash WLM.... I'm extremely disatisfied with the news that WLM is shutting down in favour of this..) and then calling my coworker on skype.
I've tried re-installing skype, I even got a new hard drive and fresh installed Windows + all my video games to an SSD, I put skype on there as well thinking maybe it would fix my issue but it did not. Same problem.

    Hi,
I'm having the exact same issue -- Skype crashes whenever I click on webcam settings.  The video is very red-shifted, so I want to be able to adjust it.  I wonder if you have any suggestions, but I have different hardware.
I recently bought a Lenovo Y580 laptop, running Windows 8, but I'm using Skype Desktop, *not* Metro.  The laptop comes with a built-in camera.  Device Manager show it as:
    Lenovo Easy Camera
    Manufacturer: Dmax
The driver is, which I updated, is:
    Driver Provider: Realtek
    Driver Date: 9/28/2012
    Driver Version: 6.2.8400.10189
Based on other comments in the forum I went to the Windows Event Viewer after the crashes.  Here's what it says.  RtCamX.dll is part of the driver files:
Faulting application name: Skype.exe, version: 6.1.0.129, time stamp: 0x50ec1757
Faulting module name: RtCamX.dll, version: 1.0.1.118, time stamp: 0x50654128

Any suggestions on getting this to work would be greatly appreciated.  By the way, I have a Logitech C510 webcam from my desktop that works just fine with Skype on the laptop, but it would be nice to be able to use the built-in camera and adjust it.
    Thanks.

  • I want to calibrate my monitor.  What software (system)??

I have used the "internal" system for calibrating the monitor on my iMac and MacBook Air.  I find using the visual cues on the advanced method difficult to discern.  Is there a better way?  I have heard of Colormonki and XRite i1.  some of these use spectrophotometers.  Is that critical?
recommedations for software only vs software/hardware methods?
    thanks

    Hi...
If you require accurate color for colormanaged workflow etc. there are no alternative to hardware calibration.
Rule of thumb is that the more expensive devices offer better accuracy and durability.
Avoid devices that use gelatine filters like Eye One Display 2. They degrade over time, usally resulting in red-shift on the calibrated monitor.
I use a Xrite DTP94, it uses glass filters.
    Just my 5 cents

  • Tired of color desat when opening in Bridge/Lightroom. HELP!

I am going insane in my attempt to keep consistent color management through all areas. Everything was fine, color was great, prints were matched to calbration, monitor calibrated, and then....I rebooted the computer since I hadn't done so for a week, and when I restarted Bridge, and Lightroom (yields same results), the color immediately drains from the photos. Similar to the screenshot, however when I initially created this screenshot, Bridge was still accepting the color. Now, the desaturation exists in all Adobe programs. (PS CS5, camera raw, bridge , lightroom 3.  I feel like I'm going in circles here. I have no clue what could have changed with the reboot. One thing I have noticed is that in Window before a photo image is generated in a folder is shows as a paint pallette. And, when asked in Windows Color Management of the program I would like to use to install a profile, I am give Microsoft Color Management System (which to my understanding is designed for Vista or XP). Tried to delete the program but was denied. Not sure if that has anything to do with it either.
If you have any insight and can help me stop the madness I would be so greatly appreciative!!

    Hi Connie,
    Let me resume:
Non  colormanaged applications (like windows explorer) shows your images  right, managed apps like LR and Bridge, which have different  cache folders, shows them desaturated, even the previewed NEF.
Putting this  together, it can't a problem with the cache, harddisk, CF card. I mean, a  cache is a cache, and might needed to be updated from time to time, f.e.  when changing the monitor- or image profile. But I expect you always have done this.
That's it - most of the rest (the tests done) provides unreliable information, sorry. I'm aware that to most of them you were forced by others, so don't take my following statements to personal.
Nevertheless I believe what we see partitial is right: some of your images  are untagged (at least the PSD we see in one of the screenshots in here)
Untagged images should look the same  in IE and Firefox unless you set Gfx.color management.mode to 1 and assign the monitor profile to FF. Per default CM in FF is enabled for tagged images only and by this acts like IE <V9 on untagged images
Untagged sRGB should look oversaturated on wide-gamut monitors and browsers on which you can't apply a profile. Believe that is what you get.
    You asked me
I'm confused which photos you viewed of mine that you found to be untagged?
all the images you presented in threads in here are untagged ;-)
Some might think different about that, but IMHO images always should have an embedded profile, even sRGB JPEGs used for web. You already get some hints on that in the other thread and the links to Ballard - even when his webdesign is a bit odd, its worth reading.
I believe your issue is a combination of untagged images, a faulty monitor profile and maybe false handling.
As implied above, personaly I can't trust any of the tests here, because they are (including the browser test I mentioned) not consistant done - I will tell you why.
What you see next are three of the images you provided here, but stacked:
    #1 (RGB/8*)*
here the second * indicates, that the image was altered (either bei assigning a colorspace or bei normal editing) after it was loaded and in a colorspace which is different from Photoshops working colorspace, which is indicated by the first *
    #2 (RGB/8*)
indicates images colorspace is different from Photoshops working colorspace - that's fine when the working space is aRGB and the image f.e. sRGB
    #3 (RGB/8)
no *, no # in here indicates it is in Photoshops working colorspace.
(RGB/8#) at the top would mean it is untagged, but when when colormanagement was OFF in that moment, it also would read as (RGB/8) or (RGB/16) (without an # or *) at the top, but "untagged" in the info panel at the bottom, even when the image has an embedded profile...
On the otherhand - and this is the important part - the Photoshop (import) settings you provided here, tells that your PS is at "preserve embedded profiles" BUT "ask when opening" at profile mismatches. By this you will be asked whenever an image profile mismatches the working colorspace.
The latter should be unchecked, anyway.
So what have you been doing, when you were asked for image #1 and #2? With this settings and since their colorprofiles are different from PS working space, you must have been asked and have assigned a profile different from working space or you haven't been asked (because images colorspace and the working space was the same) and you assigned a different profile initially later.
Or you have changed settings again and again when taking those screenshots....
When you say you see images as untagged in Bridge but in Photoshops info panel as "Adobe RGB (1998)" this can be, when a profile was added (assigned) after the image was imported to PS. Bridge will not know about that until you save the image.
Will say: those of us trying to help, never know exactly what they are here looking at (maybe without realizing)
Do we see a sRGB under an aRGB working space (RGB/8*) for #2? And #3, is this an aRGB image under an aRGB working space or a sRGB image under sRGB, (both would appear as RGB/8)? Or was the image untagged and colormanagement was off?
    Seems a bit chaotic, sorry.
At least this is nothing on which I'ld be able to tell for sure what is going on.
Next: the monitor  profile you sent to me, turns my U2410 dark and too much purple/reddish.
Of  course there should be a differences (different monitor, different  environment light and my old eyes), but this is far to much - it hurt my eyes
As  far I know, LR internal uses the Melissa color space (which is larger  than aRGB)  - I wonder what happens when RAW were processed via Meliassa  to aRGB with a too reddish monitor profile and are saved as untagged  aRGB....?
I also wonder how LR can be configured to export to PSD without  they being tagged...?   Nevertheless, I was able to reproduce this once. For one of my PSDs the profile was removed, but at the moment I don't know how to reproduce that again.
As said just make sure you images are tagged. But don't just apply a profile to those images already processed, when you don't know what really happend to them - it might get worse.
    Anyway.
To solve your prob, you should forget about LR for  now and remove the monitor profile made with the Spyder, set the DELL  profile which comes with the CD and process images from scratch.
Means  straight from NEF in one colorspace only -> via Photoshops ACR (output as aRGB and make sure aRGB is your  working space in PS), save them as PSD or TIFF and make sure they get tagged as aRGB. See if it makes a difference (color shift or not), when viewed  in Bridge.
If there is no shift, start over with calibrating your monitor. Calibrating means setting the hardware right, by making sure the monitor was set to aRGB and brightness and contrast was adjusted, before you profilling it with the Spyder.
If the problem still exists with this new profile and with images, which were processed by the above workflow and by the new conditions (make sure of that, the already processed images might be messed up) again let some one with an U2410 check the new profile.
If its still have a huge red shift on another U2410, it might point to a hardware fault (either Monitor or Spyder)
    @MJOrts
I notice that "Use Windows display calibration" is checked on in your
    screenshot.
AFAIK this setting means, that Windows is loading the LUT and not a third-party LUT-Loader, coming with the profiling device.

  • Printing, Photos are poor quality

trying to set up aperture to print better quality. don't understand how to with color sync. and it was asking for other software to load to sync color. please help. using a epson rx595 printer. i am new to aperture as of 2 weeks. please help thank you

Also note that you don't want color management turned on with both Photoshop AND the printer driver, as the colors will be managed "twice". This will cause that red shift you are seeing.
    This is from Photoshop's help:
"If Photoshop is handling the color adjustment or color management options during printing, turn off all printer driver color adjustment options. If not, specify the color management settings to let your printer driver handle the color management during printing. It's important not to color manage in both Photoshop and the printer driver simultaneously during printing. This results in unpredictable color."

  • ICC profile for getting books/posters printer?

    Hey all,
Before I start using Aperture for getting books and posters printed, I had a question on ColorSync/ICC profiles. I'm by no means a pro, but know enough to get my color workflow in basic order.
A large poster I ordered through iPhoto came back with massive red shifting and huge loss of detail in the darker photos (it was a collage). Is there an ICC profile available that can be used so that when I soft proof with Aperture, it will give me better feedback on what photos printed via the printing service (Kodak) will look like? I really don't want to go through the hassle of getting more refunds...
    TIA!

If you are using an apple cinema display that has been color calibrated I think you will get the desired result. If you are not using an apple display then you will go in circles like it did.
I'd like to qualify this statement. You should have a new professional display and use software calibration like Monaco or Pulse Color Elite from Xrite to bring your display to standardized state.
My older 22" Cinema display (which has been demoted to my business machine) will successfully calibrate thru Pulse Color Elite, but the monitor is dim and yellow compared to a successful calibration on my new 30" & 20" Apple displays or my 20" iMac G5.
As I'm laying out a sub-portfolio book to be printed via Apple, I'm assuming the only differences in color and gamut of the finished books are going to be due only to the differences in the RGB & CMYK worlds because I'm working on a calibrated workstation. I hope I'm right.

  • Aperture 3 book preview: Always WYSIWYG compared to the print?

I have found that the Aperture photo book previews of identical images differ significantly depending on the file type.  This came to my attention when I compared .jpg images to RAW images on the same page.  The reds and resulting skin tones were very different.  So I tried converting the same image to several different file types and the differences in the reds among them was quite a problem.  Meanwhile, in the Aperture viewer the different formats were almost indistinguishable. The worst shift between the preview and the viewer colors occurred for the Canon RAW format - major slide from red into orange.  I also tried .jpg (quality 10) and .psd (8 and 16 bit).  Their reds in the previews are also significantly different from the Aperture viewer in terms of saturation, brightness and contrast.  It doesn't matter whether onscreen proofing is on or off.  The 'red shift' also happens regardless of whether the monitor calibration is via Colormunki or the 'best fit' OS X eyeball calibration method.
So, what am I to believe?  The Aperture viewer or the book preview?  Or neither?  I'm not ordering all these expensive books until this is resolved.  FWIW, single prints from Apple based on the Canon RAW images are very far from the viewer appearance.  Their reds are muted and skin tones are sickly...
Any and all comments much appreciated!
    Frank in Minneapolis

Here is the 'not so happy' conclusion to this story.  After working with an Aperture support engineer I learned the following:
    1)  The print preview is the result of the particular color profile for the specific printer that will be used on each order, after it is applied to the submitted images.  So if one's monitor is calibrated then the preview image should be very representative of the printed image.
    2)  The hue shift that I see is particularly striking in pure reds that have an RGB green channel value of zero.  The printing color in the preview will consistently add green.  Blues in the same regions are variable, sometimes adding more blue and sometimes subtracting it, which worsens the hue shift.
    3)  This effect is independent of the computer submitting the image data - results were identical among 3 different macs.
    4)  Regarding the difference between image appearance in the Aperture viewer vs. the print preview - that DID vary among macs.  The best WYSIWYG performance (least difference) was on a new iMac calibrated by eye with the Apple utility, the worst was on my Mac Pro with video card upgrade and Dell Ultrasharp monitors, calibrated using colormunki.
    5)  You are welcome to take a look at the before-after difference as displayed in an online album.  It compares a .jpg made from the print preview to a .jpg made from a screen grab (using the Grab program).  Files had to be converted to .jpg format to upload.  On my rig they do show the issue.  Note my comments and you are also welcome to leave comments there.  The URL is:  http://opa.cig2.usa.canon.com/s/m/BhVjzDMZypG
    The password is: photoprint
    6)  In summary, the RAW image format is not as standardized as other more ubiquitous formats and each can be somewhat different.  So it remains to be seen whether Apple has time to fine-tune the application to all of the standards.  It may not make financial sense.  But until this is fixed, they will not receive any print business from me.

  • Problems with Lightroom 5.2 and Olympus EM-1 RAW files?

There have been reports on DPREVIEW of color problems using Lightroom 5.2 with RAW files from the Olympus OM-D EM-1 camera.  This causes  difficulty creating camera profiles, and creates a red shift in Images.  JPG images are unaffected.
    Anyone else seeing this?
When may we look forward to LR 5.3, hopefully with a fix?
    Thanks............... Jack Winberg

The read me file from Adobe indicate that LR 5.2 has "preliminary" support for the Olympus EM-1 raw files.
I would make sure you keep your original raw files so they can be converted when the support is finalized. i.e. I would not convert to dng on import if that is your normal workflow.

  • Chromatic aberration being introduced to RAW file by PS CS3

I have been working on some old photos (Canon 10D RAW files) and when I open the files in Photoshop I find that the file has severe chromatic aberration (introduced upon opening). While in ACR, the file is fine (no CA) but when it opens in PS there are significant green and red shifts (unfixable using the lens correction filter). This happens regardless of whether I open the file as a smart object, a 16 bit or 8 bit file. I have recently loaded OSX 10.5.1, and the PS version is 10.0.1. Has anyone else had this problem?

You may need to zoom into the corners of the image to 200-400% to see and correct CA as well as other fringing. The Lens correction DOES produce reduced or eliminated defringing if you properly use it. If you have a question, post the raw file.

  • LR4 beta white balance on cropped images

I'm not sure if this has been discussed, I could not find a post with silimar issues.
LR4 Beta 64 on WinVista : Nex 5N raw files
WB picker on a cropped image seems to give variable (and wrong) results
I wanted to tweak WB an image that I'd previously cropped and made some adjustments to....WB was already close, the picker on a white fishing bouy was at ~90/88/91. Clicking the picker on bouy gave a strong red shift, about +5 on the red.
1st time I did it I thought I'd jerked the mouse somewhere, tried it again.. and again with similar results. Repeated several time.
I opened LR3 and had no problems with the same image.
I reopened LR4B and got the same problem again.
Undid the crop and the WB adjustment was fine.
I went back to LR3 and cropepd the same image the same way and WB was fine.
Went back to Lr4B and again, WB was off.
I reset the image so that it had no other adjustments. WB was OK but again when I cropped it it was off.
Opened another image and did the same thing. ie full image WB was OK, cropped I got a +5 or so shift, although this time in blue.
Tried it with a different crop and got a -15 on red.
WB zoom level was at max

    Eric,
Take just about any photo and crop so all the sides are moved toward the middle. It isn't hard to find a point on the image where the white balance dropper looks like it's over a near-grey(and its numbers say near-grey), but when you click, the picture gets an extreme colour cast. And the point where you click doesn't go grey, either, but moves much farther from grey.
    Here's the crop:
Here's what happens when the eyedropper is over the almost-grey snow:
Note what's happening in the Navigator preview. It's as if the eyedropper were over the yellow jacket, but the numbers on the loupe show grey.
