REDACT expert in Acrobat 9 Pro. Expert witness please

I am the plantiff in a court case where the defendent is an attorney.  I am not represented. (do not comment on this please).  I am disputing a bill from the attorney who uses Acorbat 9 to scan documents.  The Court ordered the attorney, who is representing my wife, to redact documents and the attorney used a paralegal to do it by hand.  She is billing me for $1,000, I believe out of spite. Twice the attorney refused to redact documents over a period of months.  Finally the Court ordered her to do it..  I protested  the bill as being unreasonbale and the Court has asked for a live hearing, to hear my case.  I need an expert witness whom I will pay to demonstrate the redact capability to show that the law firm could have performed the redact in seconds, not 8 hours.  Now it is a matter of principle, not the money.  If you dislike attorneys as I do, you may be happy to squash this one.  I live in Colorado Springs, CO.  the court date has not been set yet.  It will probably be in October 2009 Thanks. Mike

Thanks for the reply,
I have a little more infomation that I did not include to keep the query short.  This is in response to graffiti.
1.   The attorney's firm has admitted to using Acrobat pro.  The firm has also admitted that they have not pursued training in using acrobat. In normal business practices training is a cost of doing business, and it is an ethical obligation to their clients.  The same as the education they receive to get their degree or to attend seminars, etc.  Furthermore, Acrobat functions such as redact and bates numbering system were developed by Adobe specifically for the legal profession. If any firm is not using Acrobat or similar software, they should be because it is cost effective for the client.  Using technology is ethical behaviour.  Or they should be charging the same rate that they did when technology wasn't available. The statement that thay may not be using Acrobat is not relevant, the statement is predudical towards the attorney and excuses them for not being ethical.
2. This may sound biased, and it is, but here goes, attorneys, who are only interested in how much they bill, have no incentive to reducing their billable hours.  They wish to keep the clock running as long as they can.  That is why this case is so very important.  Why should a cash paying client be charged for their unethical behavior?  Law firms are the only profession which is unaccountable for their hours.  It is very hard to prove they are practicing unethical behavior for their clients.  Let's face it, 1 hour of paralegal costs $150, but the Para legal only gets $40 or so of that amount.  It makes sense for the firm to bill for hours despite there being a more cost effective way to perform the task.
3.  The number of documents may be important, how much is a ton?  I suggest the number of documents is not relevant because a computer can process in microseconds using the find and replace function.  For example, how long does it take you to do a find and replace on your word processor?
4. The firm is supplying other entities both pdf and hard copies but they first scan everything into their own system using Acrobat, then they print it out in hard copy format to distribute.  Instead, they could scan in, redact, and then print.  What is wrong with that procedure?
5.  Or.... if they supply pdf files to other entities, they could scan in, redact and provide the pdf file.
6.   As in any Court case, An expert can do a lot by showing the Court the truth.  In this case, how easy it is make a few keystrokes, and the job is done.
7. Everyone should realize that the judge knows nothing except facts presented to him. Judges are not experts on information, they only make decisions based on testimony and the law, they will not "realize" anything without testimony from an expert. The fact is that Judges hear testimony, they use common sense, and they decide, but they are not experts, especially in technology..  FYI, My testimony alone is not, in the eyes of the Court, fact based because I am perceived as being prejudiced.  That is why I need an expert.  Let's use other examples.  What about the ford pickup truck that starts on fire all by itself, the Corvair that is unsafe, the collapse of Enron, the ponzi schemes, the McDonald coffee spill, etc?, in these cases, the plaintiff testimony alone would not have been enough.   This statement is not a put down to anyone, and it is not idealistic, and I am not fantasizing or a TV addict, but sometimes it is important to use examples, stupid as they may sound, in the simplest of forms, for example:  Law and Order, Boston legal and other TV series are not novels made for TV, they are based on fact, and the fact is that the expert witness plays a significant role and can be the deciding factor.
Sorry, please don't take this personally, but I remind everyone... this cup is half full.
Thanks for your thoughtful responses.
Mike

  • How secure is redaction in adobe acrobat x pro? Can text be read once redacted?

I have redacted and applied all the credit card info from some pdfs and saved them after.  Is there any way of undoing the redaction and being able to read the credit card info.
Your experience in this field will be much appreciated.

Always so long as you remember to APPLY it (some people haven't, with embarrassing results).

  • Can't apply redaction! Problem reading this document (16) Acrobat 9 pro

I am trying to apply redactions to sensitve data. I go through all the steps, mark it for reaction etc.. but when I click to "apply redaction", I get the error message "There was a problem reading this document (16). I can't find an answer to this anywhere!
The file I'm using originated from a CD sent to me from our retirement administrators. There are no restrictions on what I can do with the files.
I've tried this on 3 different computers, using both Acrobat 9 Pro (with most current updates) and Acrobat 10 Pro and I always get the same error message. Even when I extract one page, rename it and try to manually redact (without using search and redact), I still get the same message.
Any ideas???  I really need to redact social security numbers!
    Thanks
I'm using windows 7 pro if that helps...

Can't believe I didn't think of that! It worked!

I installed the 30 day free trial of Adobe Acrobat XI Pro. I am trying to redact and bates stamp documents. I don't see the Tools pane, as described in the instructions for redaction. Does the 30 day free trial version have redaction and bates stamping functionality??

Yes it does. Open the tools panel and take a look at the main headings there. What do you see?

  • How to do a manual uninstall of Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro (9.4.4) on my Mac?

    Hi Adobe Acrobat experts,
Can someone walk me through the steps I need to take in order to perform a manual uninstall of Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro on my mac?
I just got Adobe Acrobat 11 on my mac and don't want to accidentally uninstall that in the process, or delete anything necessary for me to run my other CS4 Master Suite applications.
I can't uninstall the normal way and have tried to troubleshoot it in many ways. So the last resort I have is to manually uninstall. I just don't want to mess up my PDFs.
    Thanks so much!

  • Grid with File Preview (custom layout) in Acrobat X Pro Portfolios

In Acrobat 9 Pro, there was a Portfolio layout called Grid with File Preview. We use it as our primary layout for PDF portfolios because it allows users to rapidly view PDFs within a portfolio. This was our primary reason for using Portfolios. Unfortunately, this important feature was removed in Acrobat X Pro resulting in clunky and very slow PDF viewing within a portfolio.
Is there a custom layout which emulates Grid with File Preview?
    Thanks in advance.

PDF Portfolios arrived out of the blue with Acrobat 9 and have been somewhat of an experiment - Acrobat contains some to get you started, but by also releasing the SDK it was hoped that the Flex programming community would have provided an ecosystem to support Acrobat users who wanted more choice - so just as you can buy or download hundreds of  templates for websites, you could find them for Portfolios too.
Unfortunately it hasn't happened, and the technological landscape  has changed dramatically in the past three years - the rise of HTML5, dominance of tablets/iOS, security concerns and  Adobe's repositioning of Flash in the marketplace have all affected the commercial viability of Flex as a career, and consequently the availability of free third-party Portfolio layouts. It would have been nice to see a vibrant community of people sharing their designs, but the reality is that the majority of custom PDF Portfolios are created for enterprises as part of their brand identity, and there is an obvious cost involved in hiring one of the small number of expert programmers (of which Joel Geraci is the #1) to do the work.
Adobe has never claimed that the layouts which ship with Acrobat were the best/only way to do things - just as with the default presets in Lightroom, they're examples of what can be done. With Acrobat X it became easier for non-programmers to style the layouts (via Themes) but there's no escaping the basic fact that making a layout itself is a Flex programming job, and not one you'd attempt as your first chunk of code.
When Acrobat 9 launched, I saw pretty equal levels of complaints that the bundled layouts were too boring and too flashy. The target was shifted in Acrobat X to a less corporate style, but again people loved and hated them in equal measure. Given how much work is involved in writing and testing each layout, you can't expect Adobe to release a version for everyone.
There were legitimate  reasons why the bundled layouts from A9 weren't included in AX. Speaking personally I don't expect my assessment to change: Portfolios may stick around, they may not - it depends on a mountain of bigger questions about Web standards, device popularity, politics and economics which Adobe have no control over.

  • Adobe Acrobat XI Pro free trial won't launch, claiming no Internet connection

    Hi,
I wondered if anyone could help me solve this mystery: I am trying to launch the Adobe Acrobat XI Pro free trial. Sign In is required to use the trial. But when I click on "Sign in now", I get the message "Please connect to the Internet and retry". Which is strange, because  my Internet connection is active and stable. The same panel hints that my clock might be at fault (but it is correct). I am running Windows 7, no earlier version of Adobe Acrobat installed. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you might have on how I can resolve this riddle.
    Thanks in advance,
    Andreas

    Hi SumitV,
Thank you for answering and suggesting ways to remedy my problem. I tried all the four actions you made me aware of, but although everything seems to be all right, I still cannot launch Acrobat XI in the trial version. The only little hickup came when accessing Adobe's secure site, which prompted this message:
But when I later checked the certificate, it seemed to be installed and enabled. I am no expert, but it looked like it should according to step 4 under http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-network-i ssues.html

  • Why won't Acrobat X Pro edit text?

Hello Acrobat experts.  I recently upgraded from whatever version of Acrobat Pro was in CS2, to Acrobat X Pro, which is part of CS6.  In the CS2 version of Acrobat, there was a very functional and effective "touch up text" tool which I used often to change words here or there in scanned documents.  Usually I would get a little message saying an identical font was not available, and that a substitution would be made, and a few moments later, I was able to edit and replace text to my heart's content.
When I first played with Acrobat X Pro, I couldn't find the  touch up text tool, so I went to the help site, and watched a nice video by Jon Bessant showing how to edit text.  Wow, it looked really simple.  So I attempted to make simple one word text changes in a scanned document, and I got some rather odd black blockish shapes over the lettering I had selected, which looked like what I saw in the video.  That only happened a couple of times. Usually, it appeared as though the program wasn't responding.
Sometimes, the funny blockish shapes started to show up in all manner of places on the page, not related to the single word I wanted to change.
So I found in the help documents that if tex is not recongized, that I need to go to Tools/Recognize Text/In this file.  I did that, and I got screen indications that my document was being scanned/processed, much as I had seen in my old CS2 Acrobat 2.  But when I went to try and edit text, still, nothing would happen.
The help instructions say that "If you can't edit the text, see Replace custom fonts with local fonts.  Those directions tell me to usse the TouchUp Text tool, but trying to execute those directions, nothing happens.
The text I am needing to edit, is simple Times New Roman font, scanned in with my same scanner that I had used for PDF editing with my old CS2 version of Acrobat Pro.
Help, what do I do???????????????  Thank you, Chuck

    Thanks Steve,
We are exporting PDF's as you indicate. I see the same thing. The boxes are all the size of the original InDesign document. The PDF art box should be predicated by the margins in InDesign. When we had CS3, this worked great. Now, it seems that there is a disconnect between the two Adobe products honoring the page box size. I have contacted the Adobe techs via chat, and they had no clue what I was referring to. I find it mystifying that Acrobat can not interpret the art box set in InDesign as margins.

  • Acrobat XI Pro Mac: Changing Text Color moves Text within Paragraph

    Dear Acrobat Experts!
I've been using Acrobat Pro for over a decade now (Win and Mac) - but Acrobat XI Pro Mac shows some behavior I cannot deal with:
When I'm changing text color of say a couple of words within a paragraph, usually the formatting changes and text is being moved/shifted. It looks like the text with altered color requires more space and consequently the following words are shifted which very often ruins the whole formatting. This makes Acrobat XI for me nearly unusable, I had never a behavior like this in former Acrobat versions (Win or Mac).
I cannot believe that this is "normal" - so what's the mistake I'm making? For illustration please see the two screenshots I included.
I'm looking forward to your helpful comments!
    Oliver

    Hi Sukrit!
    Thanks for your assistance.
This is the first and only Acrobat version ever I had this problem with. I am running Acrobat Version 11.0.10 under Mac OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite on a MacBook Pro 15" Retina display. I am working on Mac only since Acrobat Pro 7 - the versions before were Windows.
So I cannot comment on Acrobat XI Pro Win.
This is happening with all of my PDF docs - regardless of origin (textbook, scientific journal, or PDFs I generated by myself as export from office applications etc.).
The only difference is the amount of changes to the formatting (shifting of text).
To illustrate my workflow I generated a screencast and uploaded it here:
    <Dropbox - Acrobat_XI_Pro_Mac_3.mp4>
Looking forward to hear from you again!

  • Can I buy Acrobat X Pro Support

Can I buy software support (bug fixes, security patches, etc.) for Acrobat X Pro?

All bug fixes, and security patches are free.  You get them automatically but if you have disabld them, then go to:
    Help >> Updates
You will get all the missing ones.
for any technical support, you need to come to these forums and post your questions in the Adobe Acrobat forum and experts in that forum will try to help you.
    Good luck.

  • Acrobat XI PRO and Vista

Is there a patch to allow Acrobat XI Pro to operate with Windows Vista? I dowloaded the trial version to check compatability (because it is not listed as an OS on specs.) and the program frequently stops working.  I am redacting very sensitive files and do not want to work on the cloud.

No,  the Tech Specs (read Minimum System Requirements) do not include Windows Vista.  While they may add newer OS requirements in later updates, historically I have never seen them include older OS versions after shipping a product with an update.

  • Error 16 when installing Acrobat XI Pro

I recently purchased Adobe Acrobat XI Pro for Palomar Audubon use. While installing on a PC running Windows 8.1 I received an "error 16" message instructing me to uninstall/reinstall the program. Since then I have been informed that 1.) the entered serial number (<Serial Number removed by moderator >) is invalid and 2.) I need to uninstall and reinstall the program. At my wits end I ask that SOMEBODY can solve this dilemma for me. Let me know at: < Email ID Removed by Moderator >Although I have previously been very pleased with available donations through TechSoup I am gradually becoming more and more disheartened by this installation problem?
    Now another message:

  • Controlling Blue Selection box - Adobe Acrobat X Pro

    Hello,
I wonder if anyone may be able to help - (I am tearing my hair out trying to find a solution to this)!
When editing a PDF in Adobe Acrobat X Pro at times I only want to edit one word or date within a large amount of text. When I press edit document text the programme puts a blue box around all of the text not just the bit I want to edit. Is there anyway that I can change this to only select the text I want to change and not everything? I also end up putting all of the other amount of text out of alignment when I try and edit within the blue box . - Another reason to be able to control the blue box selection.
I have tried redaction and then chaging the redaction colour to white and chaging the redaction text which does seem to work but I now have a lot of dates that need changing and Ithe redaction idea is not really appropriate for this.
Any advice would be greatfully accepted, I am at a loss to know what to do next.
    Thank you.
    Ellie.
Below is an example, all of the people are made up by myself so please be assured I am not risking any data protection! I would ideally like to just be able to change the dates not the whole document so just box the dates!!

I purchased this from a store on Ebay that was selling 10 new packages of this version.  The package was factory sealed in plastic.  The sticker on the bottom of the box states: pn:65083248 under that is the scan bars then under that is the scan code 5 051254405801 under that is Lot code: 90513 under that is Made is USA.  on the other side of the sticker states: APRO 10.0 WIN RET UNDER THAT EAP 001 DV UNDER THAT IS 905136508324807478 under that is another scan code.  That box is says ADOBE ACROBAT X PRO WINDOWS, on the disks little box says the same.  I contacted the seller and they said that all the boxes came with both editions, the Educational disk and the regular retail disk.   How many disk are for the retail version?  They said they buy all there software from a closeout vendor.
