Redesign my web site?

I was a bit vague with my previous post on redesigning my book web site, I want to redesign the old web site myself with i-web, do what the previous designer did but I do it, make changes myself, place a buy now pay pal button on it, link to my email, etc. In other words I want to do what they did, have control of it and the ability to make changes as I do more books. I also wanted to know if I can link two sites that I one together so when you enter one you get both. Is that better. Last question-do I need a host and pay them or is the host Mac?

You might take a look at this site:

Lot of good tips there. There is a "business solutions" section
If you have a .mac account you should be able to use it.

  • After numerous display problems with version 5 affecting my job's web site, I've gone back to 3.6.18. Any dangers in this?

My workplace's web site was recently redesigned and launched and with more recent versions of Firefox [including 5] I had both display and functionality problems I hadn't had before and that aren't happening with IE8. Everything from wrong colors to scroll bars in editing text boxes that wouldn't work unless you toggled to full page view and back, to excessively constrained columns on the main portal page. Two support people at our web site company told me they still used 3.6.18 so I uninstalled 5 and went back to 3.6.18. Some colors are still wrong [I tried the troubleshooting suggestions for that to no avail] but at least the functionality problems are gone. Firefox has been my preferred browser for several years now, but I worry about the ramifications of using such an older version.

Going all the way back to Firefox 3.0.5 is shear foolishness, it is 14 security versions behind the last 3.0.19 release. And that version is missing at least a dozen security updates that were applied to the 3.5 and 3.6 versions after support for 3.0.x ended.
If you are not happy with Firefox 4, you should have installed Firefox 3.6.17. That is very similar to the 3.0 and has all the security fixes that have been released since support for Firefox 3.0.x ended last year.

  • Migration of an existing web site to Web Page Composer

    Hello,
I am investigating the options and the feasibility of the migration of an existing web site to a Web Page Composer (WPC) site. The web resources of the site can easily be copied to KM and used afterwards in WPC containers. However, they can neither be integrated to the WPC site navigation nor edited through the WPC UI. For example, only WPC Web Page or Web Sites can be WPC navigation nodes.
Has anyone ever done or tried such a migration? Do you know where I could find a description (or the javadocs) of the WPC API? Any suggestions or hints will be much appreciated.
    Thank you
    Youlian Dimitrov

    Hi Youlian.
If I understand correctly you have rebuilt only a few hundreds of the old pages using WPC forms. Did you do this manually or you have found a way of migrating them programmatically?
Yes, we did it manually for a two reasons:
    1. short timetable;
    2. 20 intranet sites with variety of used technologies and tools, styles, navigation structures.
Did you leave the rest of the pages as HTML (non-WPC) files?
Yes. But we imported them into KM.
Does it mean that you have implemented only part of the navigation structure through the WPC/portal navigation?
    Yes and no.
Firstly, in our case it would be a bad idea to bring all legacy, sometimes cluttered, navigation structure to a new platform as is.
Secondly, keeping in mind that in a common scenario portal already has own top level navigation you should carefully decide how deep is your site navigation structure will be.
Finally, migration it is a good time for information architecture redesign based on standards and guidelines.
Assuming that you have adjusted properly the links to all resources, have you encountered any particular navigation or display issues following this approach?
I could remember two limitations concerning a navigation:
    1. you should avoiding links to navigation nodes inside non-wpc html files, because in this case a target page opens without DLN;
    2. first linked non-wpc html page, which placed outside wpc container, should be opened in new window.
As for design, all our display issues caused by inline styles within source html files.
Did you notice any noticeable performance degradation after the migration?
We didn't have any degradation of performance. However, it is highly individual and depends on your portal infrastructure.
    Best regards,
    Aliaksandr Zhukau

  • Help on how to import static HTML web site in Portal v2

Hi I am new to Portal and I would like to know if there is a way to upload an entire static HTML Web site (pages and images) into Portal (v2) or do I have to re-create each pages one by one.
    Thanks for your time,
    Louis-Martin Rivard
    Covansys Canada

    Louis,
Static HTML pages cannot be mapped to Portal pages. The Portal page concept revolves around
providing a customizable container for content, rather than a HTML page which contains text
    and images.
I am assuming that your website has the following structure
    /htdocs
    /sitennn
    /pages
    /subsite1
    /subsite2...etc
    /images
    /scripts
You need to upload the zip file as an item and then unzip the zip file. When you unzip the file,
Portal will create the folders and populate them. So, if you have a root HTML file called
index.html, then you can access it as http://<server.domain>/pls/<dad>/docs/folder/<sitennnn>/pages/index.html
Assuming you have specified relative links, all images/content should show up correctly.
Once again, I would like to suggest that unless we are talking a 100+ pages and megabytes of
content, consider recreating/redesigning your website using Portal Pages, instead of upload and unzip. You will have to spend some resources (time, people) and redesign, but it will
pay off in the long run.
    hth
ps: Next time, could you please provide the Portal version and platform. It helps a lot, while
trying to come up with a soltion
I read and try to upload a zip file in Portal but the only thing I found is how to upload a single web page in a page group. Can you direct me on how to upload the entire web site?
Thanks for you help, the documentation is very poor...

  • Bad Bad web site

The other discussion on poor web site design was locked, so I'll just start a new one.
Each time I log on to the web site I am impressed by just how poorly designed and executed this site is. It's remarkable to me that a company like Verizon has a web site that is so hard to navigate, so poorly planned for real-life use, and so reprehensibly designed for accessibility.
While web capabilities continue to expand, companies should know better than to design their web sites as though they were World Wide Web showcases. I'm fortunate to have an up-to-date computer, but even for me, the web site drags and hangs. In older browsers, the site is quite impossible. The pop-up ads grind to a halt. The drop-down nav menus appear with no hover delay AT ALL and block page content, but disappear when you need to click on them. The attempt to squish every available bit of information onto a page could give a person epileptic fits.
I'm sure the web designers are skilled and capable, but this is not the forum for showing off how baroque they can make the site; this is not the place to show people their knowledge of the most complicated programming. What you guys need is a UX expert - one focused on use, not on employing the latest HTML5/CSS capabilities just 'cuz you can.
    Keep. It. Simple.
    For heaven's sake.

Both the Verizonwireless.com site and the community forum site has been redesigned a few times since the original post in the discussion you linked.  What specific problems are you having with the site?  Maybe those of us customers on the forum who know where things can be found quickly can help you with your task.

  • Safari doesn't open certain web sites

    Hi there,
I'm a web designer working on a new site. My clients say that their Mac which is running Safari 5.1.5 won't open their web site which is: http://www.adventuress.us
I've asked about 5 other people to see if they could open it up on a mac using Safari.  So far, everyone can open it except for my client.
Can you help me troubleshoot this?  The site is created with wordpress.  It's not redirecting.
I'm really not sure which Mac they have or their operating system.  I just chose two so that I could submit this ticket.
What in the world would stop them from being able to see the site? They can go to other sites.
    Thanks.

    Hi...
What in the world would stop them from being able to see the site?
Ask if they have anti virus software installed ..
It would help to know for sure which Mac OS X they have installed. Click the Apple menu icon top left corner of the screen. From the drop down menu click: About This Mac.
I'm running Lion v10.7.3 with Safari 5.1.5 on one Mac without any problems loading that site. Same with another Mac running Snow Leopard v10.6.8.
I am using OpenDNS which may help your client and is suggested by Apple > Safari 5.0.1 or later: Slow or partial webpage loading, or webpage cannot be found
Use OpenDNS for better speed, more security, includes anti phishing filters, prevents browser redirects, blocks the flashback trojan, and it's free.
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
    Click +
Enter these addresses exactly as you see them here.
    208.67.222.222
    Click +
    208.67.220.220
    Then click OK.
Quit then relaunch Safari. Try that site.

  • My hard drive crashed recently and i can no longer see my web site address in the iWeb side bar

I can n o longer see my web site address in the iweb side bar, how can I relocate it so i can edit my website

Let me start with the general advise...
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

  • Can not open a particular web site

Hi, I always tried to open one web site and it used to open well in Firefox and IE. but since last few days it stopped opening both in FF and IE. It gives error as
    1. The connection has timed out The server at www.eng-tips.com is taking too long to respond.
2.If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.
3.If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
I Google with all above questions and tried most of the solutions, nothing works. Wondering why it stooped opening suddenly ? I tried to open it from other locations just to check if its down but its fine and working but can not open from my home internet. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  • Errors on my web site started with Flash Player Release a few days ago (Mar 28, 2012)

    Hi,
I have a Flash based video player on my website.  This was designed and implemented based on an article vy Lisa Larson-Kelley.  It has run flawlessly for several years.  But, when I installed the lastest release of Flash Player a fedw days ago (Mar 28, 2012), I am now getting really annoying issues with the Flash Video Player.
I expect that I will need to place insturctions for users on how to roll back their version of Flash Player, since this latest version is broken.
But, many of the people who visit my site are not tech oriented (they are mostly friends and family, so, I don't expect that they will really roll back their version of Flash player.
I am 100% certain the issue is the latest version of Flash, since these errors never occurred until I installed the latest version.
On my work laptop, I have an older version of Flas (10.x.x) and this probelm does not happen.  On my desktop PC at home, I have an older version of Flash 11 installed, and this problem does not happen (in IE9).  The version of Flash PLayer 11 where the issue does *not* occur is 11.1.102.63.
On that same desktop PC, if I use Chrome, (which automatically defaults to the latest version of Flash which is 11.2.202.228, I get the problems.  So, there is no question that the issue is with the latest version of Flash and not my hardware or drivers.  I get the same problems on three different computers.
My website has a username and password.  If someone from Adobe wants to replicate the problem send me an e-mail and I will send you the username and password.
The videoplayer on my website is at this url:  http://www.jjjhi.com/TryMakingFlashVidPlayer/VideoPlaylist.html (but, you will need the username and password).
The issue is that sometimes (not always) when you select a video to play, inistead of the video loading into the panel as it should (sized as 1025 x 578), instead, all you see is the control skin.  The video begins to play, but all you get is the audio.  It looks like this:
You can recover from this error by using the skin control to make the image full screen, but, the video looks poor at fulls screen, because it is created at 1024 x 578.  You can then get the correct size by returning from full screen, but, I don't want the pepole who visit my cif\deo playet to have to go all through that.  Especially since most won't even know enough to try making the video full screen.
This doesn't happen for every video on my web site, but, once it *does* happen once...it will happen for every video selection you make.
This is unacceptable, and it absolutely a function of Flash version 11.2.202.228.
Adobe:  Please fix this bug as soon as possible.
I've implemented an HTML5 based video player and have begun populating it with mp4 versions of my video clips, but, quite honestly, the playback using HTML5 is much worse than with Flash.  I encoded the clips in the HTML5 player with the same Variable Bit Rates as in the F4V clips, and, in the HTML5 player, there are missed frames, and the audio can get out of sync.  So, I *want* to keep using my Flash Based video player, but...if Adobe doesn;t fix this, I will just dial down my VBR till I find one that is slow enough to play in HTML5 and ditch Flash.
My HTML5 video player is here:
    http://www.jjjhi.com/TryMakingNewVideoPlayer/NewVidPlayer_option1_jth.html
(again you need the username and password to use it, send me an e-mail and I will give them to you, I just don't want to post them in an open forum).
Here is a bitmap of the page:  It is quite snazzy looking and is based on an excellent class from Chris Converse at Lynda.com.  But, even though it is 'snazzy looking' the HTML5 player performs poorly on an under-powered machine (like my work laptop).  It uses 100% CPU and misses frames and the audio loses sync.  The same videos encoded with the same VBR for Flash (F4V) play great, *except for the new issue described above!!!!)
I Adobe can fix this issue with Flash Player 11.2.202.228  ASAP, else, I will  have to 'downgrade' to an HTML5 based video player, that, quite honestly does not perform as well as Flash.
If you want to reproduce the problem contact me at my e-mail address: [email protected] and I'll send you the username and password.
You can then prove that the problem does not exist with prior version of Flash player (before 11.2.202.228) but *does* exist with this latest buggy release.
    Thanks,
    John

    Thanks.
I sent the username and PW to you and Chris.
    Cheers,
    John

  • After installing FireFox 17 I can no longer log on to the video web site VUDU I tried the reset and it didn't worrk now what do I do?

I was using Firefox 15 but kept getting messages to update to Firefox 17 so I did and now I cannot log into my account at VUDU.com. Which by the way is the only web site I have this problem with. It never happened with ver. 15 and only started to deny access in the past week. So why is the question of the day. What did you guys screw up with ver 17?

Using hardware acceleration means that Firefox uses the GPU instead of the CPU to do some (image) manipulations and you may not notice any effect in Firefox if you disable hardware acceleration.<br />

  • What's the difference between a web site and a web application?

I'm stumped trying to come up to a difference between a web site and a web application for myself. As I see it, a web site points to a specific page and a web application is more of some sort of 'portal' to content and information.
But where I'm stuck is that a web application is still viewed through a browser (is it not?) and a web site can still view content dynamically, making the line between web site and application prety gray.
For instance, does a web site using ASP.NET or AJAX (I assume ASP.NET is AJAX's proprietary sibling, if not, ignore ASP.NET AND concentrate on the AJAX), becomes a web application because it can retrieve data dynamically and asynchronously or would a website
using PHP and a CMS be more of a web application because it forms the pages on request, based on the request of the client and its content in its databse?
Or maybe I'm totally wrong here - what differenciates between a web application and a website?

This is totally personal and subjective, but I'd say that a website is defined by its content, while a webapplication is
defined by its interaction with the user. That is, a website can plausibly consist of a static content repository that's dealt out to all visitors, while a web application depends on interaction and requires programmatic user input and data processing.
For example, a news site would be a "website", but a spreadsheet or a collaborative calendar would be web "applications". The news site shows essentially the same information to all visitors, while the calendar processes individual data.
Practically, most websites with quickly changing content will also rely on a sophisticated programmatic (and/or database) backend, but at least in principle they're only defined by their output. The web application on the other hand is essentially a program that
runs remotely, and it depends fundamentally on a processing and a data storage backend.

    https://glossicom.zendesk.com/entries/68161538--Watch-The-Godzilla-2014-free-Online-Full-Movie-HD-Quality
There is no real "difference". Web site is a more anachronistic term that exists from the early days of
the internet where the notion of a dynamic application that can respond to user input was much more limited and much less common. Commercial websites started out largely as interactive brochures (with the notable exception of hotel/airline reservation sites).
Over time their functionality (and the supporting technologies) became more and more responsive and the line between an application that you install on your computer and one that exists in the cloud became more and more blurred.
If you're just looking to express yourself clearly when speaking about what you're building, I would continue to describe something that is an interactive brochure or business card as a "web site" and something that actually *does something that feels
more like an application as a web app.
The most basic distinction would be if a website has a supporting database that stores user data and modifies what the user sees based on some user specified criteria, then it's probably an app of some sort (although I would be reluctant to describe Amazon.com
as a web app, even though it has a lot of very user-specific functionality). If, on the other hand, it is mostly static .html files that link to one another, I would call that a web site.
Most often, these days, a web app will have a large portion of its functionality written in something that runs on the client (doing much of the processing in either javascript or actionscript, depending on how its implemented) and reaches back through some
http process to the server for supporting data. The user doesn't move from page to page as much and experiences whatever they're going to experience on a single "page" that creates the app experience for them.

  • After iOS 8 upgrade, web site stopped working

I upgraded to iOS 8.0 (12A365) on my iphone 4S (Model: MD276LL/A) this evening.  The problem is ONLY with Safari on my 4s after I upgraded.  It worked fine before I upgraded, since I had tested it for someone else. It works fine with my computer with both Safari and FireFox.
I use a web site that has scrollable (multipage) frames. I cannot scroll in the framed sections of the website. Anyone else with this. www.GolfMission.Com is the site.
If you go to www.GolfMission.com, select "2014 Results & Std." from the left column, then select "2014 Net Averages" from the central framed area, you will get a multipage pdf document.  It should normally be scrollable.   It does not show scroll bars and only the first page is visible in iOS 8 Safart.
    1) Does anyone else have this problem (several of us do)
    2) How to I report it to Apple?
    3) Is there a fix for my iPhone, or a recommended a change to the Website?
    4) Can I get out of iOS 8 ????  I used to love apple.
    Thanks in Advance.

    stevejobsfan0123,
    Thank You for your attention.

    2. Depends on your answer to the above.
    3. It's up to the webmaster to change their website.
    4. Downgrading is not supported.
I upgraded to iOS 8.0.2, this am, the problem remains the same as with 8.0.0.
The problem was NOT there before I upgraded to iOS 8.
    1. Does it happen with all PDFs, or just from this one site?
         Answer:
The same .pdf file is multiple page viewable on my iPhone when viewed outside of
              the Website context (http://www.golfwebsite.ws/14493/Documents/2014%20Net%20Average.pdf).
No, it only happens when the pdf is in the scrollable area of the website, as far as my problem goes.  I think it is a "Frame" construct in the web site.
It happens in MANY places on the web site (where there is a scrollable frame)
The Scroll Bars and other functionality of the "Frame" do not appear as they should and the first page is just presented as a fixed image.
Attempts to scroll move the whole page up and down.
The same PDF works (roughly) when viewed outside of the context of the web page.
    3. It's up to the webmaster to change their website.
It worked fine on my iPhone before the upgrade to iOS 8.0, and it works fine with Safari on my MacBook, and with FireFox on my MacBook.
This appears either to be a bug, or an upgrade that makes this website, and I'll presume many others obsolete only for iOS 8 Safari, but not for any other browser.
Over one hundred people use this website daily and they are complaining about it.  All are iPhone users, and all started complaining yesterday.
I'm not trying to be smart, but shouldn't the iOS 8 browser stay consistent with the MacBook Safari, and all the other browsers in this regard.
    4. Downgrading is not supported.
         Unfortunately, I'm aware of this.
Can anyone add to this?  Thanks in advance.   The website and all are provided for testing in this thread.
