Redesignating the Host Computer

Hello.  Maybe these are simple questions, but I am not an expert, so here it goes.
1.  I am replacing my host computer so I will need to redisignate the host computer on my network.  Do I have to start over and set up the network again, or is there an easier way that will not affect the exisiting networked computers and devices?
2.  My current host is hardwired to a WRT54GS router.  I am replacing the existing hardwired desktop host with a laptop that will be wireless and the router and cable modem will be stand-alones.  Are there any issues associated with this I should know about?  Thanks!

1)  Your WRT54GS does not care which computer is the host.  All network computers are treated equally.   I don't know whether or not Windows cares about this - I guess this depends on how you set things up in Windows.  But this definitely is not a router problem.  Might be a Windows problem.
2)  The only issue with this setup is that whenever you change any of your router settings, you should connect to the router by wire.  Do not try to change router settings wirelessly.   Changing the router settings wirelessly usually works, but sometimes can cause serious router problems.  And never ever try to upgrade the router's firmware wirelessly - this will likely kill your router.

May a recent iMac be installed as the Host Computer for a wireless community. The present situation is; the iMac is subservient to the e Mac. I do not want to have two computers. I have one guest on the wireless.

There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.

  • Log data on the host computer using cRIO-9035

Is it possible for me to log data on the host computer opposed to on the controller itself? I'm needing to log quite a bit of data and I'm not wanting to use my storage on the cRIO. I'm using scan mode on the controller.
    Thanks

Lots of ways to do this. You can write a datalogger to run on the PC, to read shared variables hosted on controller and  write them to a file. There is also the DSC module for logging hundreds to thousands of shared variables to a database, if you need that.

  • HT1766 can i back up my ipad if the host computer has lost every thing?

Can I back up my ipad if the host computer has lost its operating system and the was re-instald?

Yes, this would be like syncing to a new computer. So, some precautions are required or you might lose what's currently on the iPad.
iTunes will only let you sync to one library at a time, if you get this warning message, follow this:

But...9iAS is still picking up the old computer name and I can't start any services.
    I thought I did a complete uninstall:

I don't mind reinstalling if I have to, but what did I miss?
Can anyone help me with this, we're at a standstill?

  • [SOLVED] Virtualbox hangs the host computer

    Hi all,
It's been some time since I experience this annoying bug :
Virtualbox completely hangs my computer whenever I click on the "configuration" for any virtual machine.
Even the magic sysreqs keys are not able to recover (they are enabled in /etc/sysctl.conf) , I'm obliged to hard reboot my machine
However, I can go into other menus in the GUI without problems. VMs work ok as well.
    My host system :
    3.7.8-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Feb 15 03:39:05 EET 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    virtualbox 4.2.6-1
    virtualbox-host-modules 4.2.6-6
    no proprietary extension pack.
(kernel was upgraded today and the computer rebooted, virtualbox-host-modules were updated as well)
    Using KDE 4.10
    Nvidia integrated graphics (xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.6-1)
Thanks for any help on how to overcome this bug!

All I did was to click "remove all the warnings" in the Help menu, and remove some older VM files which might have been corrupt.

  • Time Machine makes the Host Computer unusable

I have been running Time Machine for some time now. Long enough that it started notifying me that it was deleting older backups. Shortly thereafter my computer (24" IMac) started to run very slow. So slow that it would take several seconds to type a 4 letter word and the mouse movement delay was several seconds. I went to the control panel and turned Time Machine off. That did not help. So I next disconnected the firewire disk that is hosting the Time Machine backup and my computer returned to normal.
So what do I do now? For obvious reasons I am reluctant to reconnect the Time Machine disk. Any suggestions on what might have happened and/or how I can safely reinstate Time Machine?

Obviously you are running out of space on the backup drive causing TM delays as it combs through data to determine what can be deleted to make up the space. That would suggest you need a new, larger hard drive for TM backups - might consider doubling the size at the least.
To continue with the new drive you want to clone your old backup to the new drive so you will need enclosures for both drives.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new backup drive.
Source means the old backup drive.
Be sure to prep the new drive as follows:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Be sure you only use Disk Utility or SuperDuper! to clone the TM backup correctly.

  • HT2688 When using either Music Sharing or Home Sharing, can I edit song star ratings on guest devices, or just on the host computer?

I'd love to be able to add song ratings to tracks regardless of which machine/device I listen with, but it seems I can't do that currently. I'm using the "Music Sharing" option described on this support article (HT2688), which allows me to view and listen to songs, but prevents rating them. Thanks for any suggestions!

Just connect the new iPod to your computer and setup the iPod via iTunes (instead of via wifi).

  • Screen sharing not exactly the same as the host computer's screen

    Hi all
I am using a mac mini as a media server connected via HDMI to my big TV downstairs.  I am using screen sharing from my macbook air to do little tasks while not downstairs.  This has been a very good setup.
One thing I wanted to do is maintain my iphoto library - going through old albums, confirming faces, red-eye etc.  whatever.
Using screen sharing works for this, mostly.
When I choose a photo and click "edit", my TV downstairs shows the photo fine, but my screen sharing on my laptop shows nothing but black where the photo should be.  When I zoom in, I see the navigator window appear (with the image) but I do not see the photo itself.  I am including a screenshot.  Note how at the bottom, you can see images, and in the zoom window you can see that there is an image there, but the image field itself is empty.  On my TV I can see the image (a squirrel, as it turns out).
Others I have talked to about this claim that some video sources do not "play well" with screen sharing and/or VNC. I haven't encountered these things but I do recall old versions of windows would only display a movie on one of two screens, even when the screens were mirrored (a big pain for presentations if I recall)
Hoping that this is a bug in screen sharing that apple can fix?  anyone else have this problem? anyone else can try this and confirm?
The mac mini isn't running Lion yet but the macbook air is.  Other than that all software etc is up to date.
I tried screen sharing on an older laptop running the same os as the mini (snow leopard) and the same thing happens, so it isn't a problem running between 10.6 and 10.7.

I saw similar problems.  Please see my Aug 21 post on vnc at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3267893

  • How to get the ip address of the host computer

    Hi all,
How do I get the Internet IP Address of the Machine that has the Oracle HTTP Server?
    Thanks.

    Edited by: A.Sandiego on Sep 12, 2008 6:52 PM

    Hello,
Do you mean the internal IP address or the IP address as seen by remote machines?
If you mean the internal IP address, then you can use -
OWA_UTIL.GET_CGI_ENV('SERVER_NAME');If you mean the internet accessible IP, then that's another kettle of fish, as due to your traffic routing etc, the server itself might not necessarily know that address, so if you really need to know it then you'd need to write a process that contacted a site like whatsmyip.org and parsed the output to find out the public IP address of that machine.
It really depends what you're trying to find really?

  • Host computer won't recognize the target computer.......

So here is a rundown of what happened....
I just bought Leopard and tried to install it on my computer. It said I did not have enough free space ( I need 11 GB, I have 1.4 available) and that it would have to delete everything on my computer to get it to install. Well, I didn't want that since not everything was backed up. Now, when I start up my computer the apple logo comes up with the spinning "sunshine rays" and then just shuts off. There is no way to get my computer to restart. I have tried using the "restart from" and selecting my hard drive and then the computer restarts, sunshine thingy spins, and then my computer turns off.
I have tried to run the disk repair only to have an error message come up half way through saying "the underlying task reported failure on exit". No idea what this means. There has to be some way for me start my computer back up or save all my files. I have bought the 1TB time capsule so that should fee up enough room for Leopard to run smoothly once I get it installed
I tried repairing it and I got the same message as I did trying to verify it. So here is another weird little tid-bit. When I try to re-install Tiger it doesn't locate my hard drive as an option to install it on. But when I use the install disk from Leopard it does locate and give me the option to install it on my hard drive. If I install Leopard and erase and format (journaled?) my hard drive in order to do so, will I be able to use any programs to recover my lost files?
So now I am trying to use my iMac as a host computer and the G4 that won't start as the target computer. I have tried everything I can think of but the host computer will not recognize the target hard drive. Everything is hooked up correctly I think and the hard drive from my bad computer should be on the desktop of my iMac but it isn't. Any ideas????

    Hi-
The error report "the underlying task reported failure on exit" is a hard drive error that Disk Utility couldn't repair. However, if the Disk Utility was from the Leopard install disc, then the version is wrong. If the error came from the Tiger disc, you may need DiskWarrior to correct the error.
First, though, try repairing the hard drive with fsck.
Boot to Single user mode by holding Command+S while booting. In the resulting screen, at the command line, type /sbin/fsck -fy and press Return.
fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
    FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do). Two, three or four tries may be necessary.
When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.
If the fsck returns that the drive is OK in the first pass, and typing "reboot" doesn't get a proper startup, try resetting the PRAM on the G4. Hold CommandOption+PR while booting, hold until the second startup chime, and release. The machine, hopefully will boot.
Let us know how you fare with this.....
