Redhat/centos on macpro using quadro

Hi, i have this scenario : if i install linux(rhel/centos) via bootcamp/refit on mac pro and if this macpro using quadro card, then do i have to switch the card from mac version to non-mac version ? for example if i got quadro 4000 for MAC, then when i boot into linux , will it recognize the card or i need to change the card to non-mac version  (i believe they're using the same PCIe slot, right) ?
option 1 : If i can still use the 'for mac' version in linux, will i get maximum power of it ? has anyone ever tried this ? is linux driver for quadro (in this example quadro 4000) really working perfectly when install on mac pro ?
option 2 : if i need to switch to non-mac version.... means i need to have 2 card inside the macpro, one is for running mac osx (let say radeon) then another is for running linux (quadro). Will it be any trouble with both graphic card installed together, will the uncompatible card give any problem the the OS ? will osx crash with the quadro ? vice versa , will the linux crash because of the radeon inside ?
What i'm trying to do is to have dual boot (linux rhel/centos and OSX) inside macpro. Then i want to  get a  quadro card (maybe quadro 4000), so both linux and mac can use it.
Thanx

As long as you have drives, it is just another graphic card. An "apple" card works fine in other OS.
You should check Nvidia and linux forums though about drivers.
And you don't need to do anything with or about "Apple Boot Camp" esp if you do like I hope, put it on its own hard drive.

Can you use lower case in other files? If not, then go to the far right of the tool options and click the little four-lined square and choose Reset Tool.

I got out of such a dilema by upgrading to Oracle 10.
Any reason you need to stick with Oracle9i?

  • Modem options for MacPro use with Brother printer/fax/modem

I have a MacPro without a modem but could get and install one, I suppose. I have a Brother printer that, I think, will fax to and from the computer [MFC-8670-DN] but can't set it up without a modem of course. I do have a modem in a Cube that still works.
Wht's the best way to go? Get modem and install in MacPro, use Cube and PageSender or somehow work out Cube send/receipt but ultimately connecting to MacPro?
Thanks for any help in figuring this out. I want to fax from MacPro desktop and receive to MacPro desktop. I do have Page Sender but no modem in the MacPro, thus the issue.

You can purchase the USB Modem from Apple for around $49.

  • 3ds Max crashes using Quadro 1000M card on battery

If I run 3ds Max 2012 on the Quadro 1000M card with the power adaptor plugged in it runs fine. If I unplug the power while the program is running, or start the program under battery power the program will run for a few seconds then freeze.
Running under the Intel graphics works fine, however the purpose of having a workstation class laptop is to take advantage of the inproved graphics option.
The W520 is listed as 3ds Max "certified" by Autodesk. I have all the latest Lenovo and Windows drivers, as well as the latest BIOS installed as of 1/10/2012.
Is anyone else having issues with applications crashing while using Quadro graphics on battery power?

    hey Senorpablo,
    welcome to the forums
The driver version for your Quadro is at 8.17.12.7593 ? If not update it here >> http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS013693
And bios is at 1.34 ? The update is here >> http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS018884
Since this only happens for this particular program, try reinstalling 3ds Max and when you reinstall; set your unit to diagnostic mode via msconfig before doing so.
at the same time check with the Autodesk forum, there might be other uses who has the Quadro 1000m on their system who is experiencing the same symptom or maybe a patch is available for this.

  • Remote control of Macpro using a windows based laptop

I travel regulalry and would like to be able to access and control my macpro at home to help my family resolve computing issues that they may face. I use a (sigh) HP windows OS(XP) machine when travelling. Whats the best way of being able to control my mac remotely under these circumstances?

    Hi,
Maybe you can take a look to the LogMeIn web service. The only think you need to do is creating a free account and install the software on your home macpro. After this, on your WinXP laptop, just open your LogMeIn account on a browser and that's it !

  • Creating the best RAID setup for my MacPro using FCP

I have a MacPro, 2 x 3GHz Dual Core, 16GB ram, 4 x 500GB drives and I work in FCP 5.1.4 and with my Hardware setup I feel it should be faster and I've been wanting to set up a RAID but not sure how to do it, or the best way way to do it.
Out of the 4 drives I have, Drive one is my main drive (boot drive, apps etc.) Drives (2 & 3) which is a TB combined, I'd like to turn those into a RAID) to speed up rendering, editing etc. In FCP and Motion. Drive 4 is where I keep all my working files.
My files are backed up regularly onto external harddrives and kept offsite.
Can I leave everything I have on my entire system the way it is and just turn Drives 2 & 3 into a RAID that's best for this application? People who work in VIDEO I know do this all the time to speed things up but I can't find the steps for the best way to do this. Bits and pieces all over the place but I can't put this puzzle together.
Can you point me in the direction in how to do this?
As I'm doing this is there anything I should be careful about?
Please help me understand this process.
Just in case you need to know what kind of drives I have here's the info:
    Capacity: 465.76 GB
    Model: ST3500641AS P
    Revision: 3.BTA
    Native Command Queuing: Yes
    Queue Depth: 32
    Removable Media: No
    Detachable Drive: No
    BSD Name: disk1
    Bay Name: "Bay 1"
    OS9 Drivers: No
    S.M.A.R.T. status: Verified
    Volumes:
    Startup Drive:
    Capacity: 465.44 GB
    Available: 367.86 GB
    Writable: Yes
    File System: Journaled HFS+
    BSD Name: disk1s2
    Mount Point: /

My advice would be 'yes' to what you are saying... with the exception of the Softraid stuff - not that I think its wrong, but I've never used it, so I can't comment if you need it or whether the Mac OSX raid is sufficient - but others here say they prefer it so fair enough. You can see some comparisons here http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/softraid/351/
amug always have indepth benchmarks of stuff.
I wouldnt call myself an FCP guru, but I think that your suggestion of putting the FCP scratch disk and client, video files on the raid are the best idea. The scratch folder is essentially where the temp-rendered clips go, so its audio and video - you want that folder to be on a really fast volume. You also want your source video files to be on a really fast volume, so they can be streamed fast enough to play in realtime too when playing unrendered areas, or building a preview.
Some might say in FCP you get bast performance when your scratch disks and video files are on seperate disks. Thats totally true, so it can read from one disk and write to the other at the same time. But in your case you have a 3disk stripe, which is roughly 3x faster than either of your disks! So it would still be faster to have them all on the same stripe.
You can leave your FCP app on the sys drive, keeps things cleaner (drive1 for sys and appsm raid for data). You can keep your project files where ever you want, they're not very big and are kept in memory so dont affect performance at all. Though to stay clean I would keep it on the raid, so again the raid is for data, and you can back it up accordingly. The system drive is only for apps and system so you can back that up accordingly too (less frequently probably).
P.S. Technically your 'point 8' is inaccurate. After creating the raid you will not see drives 2,3 or 4. You will see only one 'volume' for all 3 drives. Overall your mac will have 2 'volumes': the system drive, and the stripe of 2,3,4. Physical drives and 'volumes' that mount in your OS are completely seperate. You can create multiple partitions in a single drive, or you can combine multiple drives into a single volume (e.g. using raid). But basically yes, you copy your client files back to the raid.
And remember, if any ONE of the disks in the stripe dies, you lose ALL of the data on the entire 1.5TB volume. So it is pretty important to backup regularly!!!!
(I dont wanna confuse you any more, but raid5 is a good option if you want more security and don't mind paying extra :P, you'll need more hardware for that, and more drives to make it worthwhile - but I would say skip that for now, as you can build your raid0 for free or almost free and use that until you think you need more)

  • Benefit of using Quadro FX 5800 vs. GTX 580 in CS6... Is there any?

I've been looking around and could not find a good justification to use a Quadro FX 5800 vs. GTX 580. Is there something that I am missing about the Quadro?

I have a question for you on the GTX 680, why do you and others say that the GTX680 is hamstrung by the 256-bit bus when the memory bandwidth of the GTX580 is 192.4 GB/s and the memory bandwidth of the GTX 680 is essentially the same at 192.2 GB/s.  The specifications show that despite a narrower interface that have much faster memory for the 600 series (Data rate of 6 GHz versus 4 GHz) Incidently there is a serious memory clock rate mistake on the nVidia page on the GTX 680 specs.   For backup I had to go to EVGA's specifications
anat_usa, go with the GTX 6xx family there is now a new GTX 670 with either 2 GB of VRAM or 4 GB of VRAM.  You will be much happier in the long run.

  • ISight on MacPro used by MacBook Pro?

Anyone knows if it would be possible for a MacBook Pro to access the iSight camera on a MacPro via a wireless network and what software you would use on the MacBook Pro to access the camera?
It would just be the coolest way ever to check on the baby without having to go into the room and wake him up!

If you are technically savvy for professional level applications, and depending on what you specifically want to do, Apple's QuickTime Streaming Server and Apple QuickTime Broadcaster can certainly let you do about anything.
The apps linked in the "iSight as a surveillance or Nanny cam section of Some Applications You Can Use With iSight might also meet your needs.

  • Which version of Windows is best to play pc games on MacPro using bootcamp?

I have a macpro and want to start playing PC games using bootcamp.  Which version of Windows (Vista or 7) is best for gaming?

It gets into more things, not to confuse but:
XP address 1.9GB which won't work iwth 1GB video cards
Windows 7 64-bit hands down. But if your game or you want and have dual processor, then Pro.
System Builder. No need for retail and costs 1/2.
Windows 8 Preview. Free and runs great but dont expect everything to work, especially any Apple software.
Windows 7 needs 50GB. Paltry amount for today.
Putting Windows on same drive? don't advise doing so. Besides clutter it would go to the inner slow tracks of drive platter.
    Windows 7 SP1 64-bit Pro System Builder ~$129

  • Question on MacPro Using VGA

Hi. I have a MacPro1,1 and an older Sony LCD vga display that maxes out at 1280 x 1024. I just switched from a 5' vga cable to a 15' vga cable and have a marked decrease in picture quality.
Here's my question: I'm using a pretty cheap 15' vga cable; in anyone's experience, would a better-quality cable improve the monitor picture image?
Or, if I get a newer 1920 x 1200 monitor with DVI, would it look OK with 15' of cable?
    Thanks for any input.

Switched to DVI cable, looks great at 15'.
