RedHat or Suse Linux?

Hi.
Our company has to choose one of the following OS:
1. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3
2. Suse Enterprise Server 8
for our new Oracle9i DB server. Can someone suggest one and explain why he choose that? Is there any web site where I can find some tests to compare this two products?
Thanks.

Hi
I am using Oracle With SuSE for last 2 years .I have seen the following advantages
SuSe have a very good Oracle on SuSE Linux forum which have lot of participants
some very useful RPMs for automatic startup and shutdown and for setting kernel parameters during startup.
Installation was always easy and no crashes at all .
Currently I am running SLES8 and oracle 9iR2 (database and apps server ) with Async-IO
The only problem I found was hyperthreading CPUs but that may generic to all distributions

If you have a pendrive, you can use Universal USB Installer to copy all files into it, and install Linux.

  • Adobe AIR on RedHat and SUSE Linux

    Hi,
I am trying to install AIR 2.5 runtime on RedHat Linux and SUSE Linux . When I try to do it on RedHat, I get the following error:
error while loading shared libraries: libpangocairo-1.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Can anyone help me fix it. I assume I will get something on the same lines on SUSE as well? Also, has anyone successfully done what I am trying to do? I can see that Adobe AIR page doesn't mention RHEL and SUSE (but openSUSE) supported, but still.
    Thank you!
    -Amit

The only version that works on RHEL 5 is 2.0.4. Check this thread for more details:
    http://www.cherpec.com/2010/12/adobe-air-2-5-1-glibc_2-7-error/
It works as I tested on RHEL 5. But to ship AIR heelp to customers, this is for sure not a solution.

  • Connection problem in Linux systems: redhat and suse

I install Sun Java System Application Server Platform Edition 9.0 in RedHat and SuSE linux in my intranet with wondows XP.
The servers run correctly in both RedHat and SuSE systems. That means in each system, I can use: http://localhost:8080 or their ip address to access the servers, for example, http://192.168.0.5:8080.
However, in the windowsXP computers, I cannot access the servers running in both Linux systems by using their ip address (for example, http://192.168.0.5:8080). In addition, in RedHat, I cannot access the application server running in SuSE and vice versa.
The network works correctly as I can use SSH to log in both RedHat and SuSE linux by using their ip address.
And in both RedHat and SuSE, I can access the application server running in windows XP computer.
I thought the problem came from the configuration of the linux. But I donot how to solve it.
Could anyone give me some suggestions?
    Thanks a lot.

Now that I am in Canada fro work and I must stay a lot, my device does not work on any mobile network of Canada. Specifically I'm at manitoba province and I have not find yet some a one to help me about my problems. Every mobile network I test does not work properly. From the most of them they tell me that my device does not use the frequency band that use north American, and some of them tells me that my device is not fully unlocked. Is that possible? My device have fully unlocked, medium unlocked and fully locked systems? Does anybody knows what to do to fix it? And how you figure this out that my device is locked or unlocked, cause every single video I saw it seems to me that my device is unlocked. Thanks and hope someone to give an answer to my problem.
Can't be used, wrong frequency. Canada, North America and half of South America use GSM 850 / 1900 MHz.
Rest of the world use GSM 900 / 1800 MHz.

  • Can not focus or edit on JTextField on SuSe Linux 9.1

    Hi,
I am trying to debug a strange problem with JTextField on SuSe Linux 9.1.
The problem is that the mouse click can not gain focus to the JTextField
in a very high frequency. Once problem occurs, the keyboard tab also
does not work. The problem does not happen all the time.
I wrote a simple event listener that dump out events that confirm that
the TextField got the mouse click event.
    We are using JDK1.4.2_05.
The same piece of code works fine with Windows XP and RedHat.
I would greately appreciated if you have any suggestion to debug this
    issue.
    Thanks,

The first thing to do is identify which of the two rows with the same key value are correctly referenced by rows in other tables.  If all referencing rows relate to only one of the errant pair then you can insert the non-key values from the other
one into a new row, and then delete the original 'bad' row.  If you find that there are rows in referencing tables which relate to each of the errant pair, then, after copying the non-key values from one into a new row and deleting the 'bad'  original,
you'll need to change the foreign key values in those rows in any referencing tables which related to the 'bad'  original to the value of the primary key in its replacement row.  You'll need to delete the relationship before doing any of this of
    course.
Once you've done the above I'd then be inclined to copy the table to a new one under a different name, delete the original table, rename the copy to the original name, and then re-create the enforced relationship.  Finally, compact and repair the database.

I've had success with the RedHat AS3.0 (Pentium) version running on SuSe Linux 9.1 both 32bit and x86_64 builds

  • Patch: 8.0.5.1 on glibc-2.1 based SuSE Linux 6.2

See the top of my homepage (http://www.csn.tu-chemnitz.de/~mha/)
The package opatch.rpm there is for SuSE Linux 6.2, a glibc 2.1
based distribution. Oracle 8.0.5.1 needs to be patched if you
want to install it on glibc2.1-based Systems (however,
upgrading an already running Oracle-System from glibc2.0 to 2.1
works without any patches to Oracle - the problem is that Oracle
is relinked during installation, and it must be linked against
    glibc2.0).
The package also takes care of some other bugs in the Oracle
installation process. It must be applied to the Oracle
    installation
tree before installation, which means you cannot install from
CD. I don3t think this will be a problem - you should have 475MB
    left
for running Oracle anyway (475MB is the size of the tree of
    Oracle 8.0.5.1 Enterprose Edition)!
PS: A similar (pre-installation) patch for Oracle 8i is on the
    way.
    null

I would not blame ORACLE - I think the problem is
with the EGCS and the libraries.
I have emails from the linux.devel on these.
For e.g. a simple program such as
    #include "stdio.h"
    FILE *fp = stderr;
    main() {
gives error on Redhat 6.0, Caldera 2.2!
It works on Solaris, IRIX, AIX, Redhat 5.2 and
    even with Visual C++ 6!
I have had other programs such as pdksh (ksh) also
dumping on Redhat 6.0 and Caldera 2.2
(even after I compile everything from source!).
I have also had nothing but trouble with other databases
on 6.0. I think new kernels should go through a lot more
testing before being released like this.
I am also debating whether to move back to Redhat 5.2!

  • Suse Linux loses SAN connectivity

    Hi All,
anyone come across a problem before where a blade with Suse/Redhat linux installed loses connectivity when one of the HBA is disconnected? we have a situation where we have a blade with Suse linux 11 installed (SAN boot) & we configured 2 vHBA's (one on each Fabric) plus Powerpath is installed & configured correctly (as advised by SAN vendor).
we "disabled" one of the vHBA's & immediately we lost connectitity even though the 2nd vHBA was still "connected". as soon as we re-enabled the vHBA, it started working. we then tested by disabling the 2nd vHBA & left the 1st vHBA running & it still lost connectivity.
we will be looking at the powerpath logs, but i thought i would ask the forum to see if anyone can give some pointers,
    any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Kassim

    Robert,
have not tested without powerpath but i guess it will be the same.
reason for saying the above is that we found out the problem yesterday when SAN vendor was carrying out a FLARE code upgrade on the SAN & when SPA rebooted, our Suse server fell over. all other ESXi hosts continued working.
we checked the powerpath install & found that it was installed but was not registered. below was the output when querying the powerpath install:
    # rpm -qa EMCpower*
    EMCpower.LINUX-5.3.2.00.00-029
    # powermt check_registration
There are no license keys now registered.
    # powermt display dev=all
    PowerPath modules are not loaded.
Ensure that the modules are loaded and try again.
so i guess this "might" equate to powerpath not been installed as its un-usable.
we did get it registered & configured & asked SAN vendor to confirm the config & they were happy with it.

I have not tried using Oracle Universal Installer to install ODI 10.1.3.4 on SuSE linux. But on any system not supported by OUI, you can use the manual install method
Basically, its just copying the entire oracledi folder to your system and modifying the ODI_JAVA_HOME environment variable.
For more details, browse to the helpfiles on your ODI download (\oracledi\doc\webhelp\en\index.htm) and search under "Manual Installation of ODI"

    Hi Rudolf,
    have a look under $ORACLE_HOME/precomp/admin:
there is a file called pcscfg.cfg (or similar). If I remember
right there is a line with "redhat", replace this line with the
    corresponding entry for SuSe

  • Install of SuSE Linux 9.0 freezes early on

I recently upgraded to an MSI 865PE Neo2 motherboard, with a P4 2.8 GHz processor.  I've installed Windows XP Professional without difficulty, but I tried to install SuSE Linux 9.0 and it locks up early on in the boot process during "hardware detection."  Opinions on this forum about earlier versions of SuSE and the YaST program were fairly poor, and their own site says that support for the Neo2 is only "partial."  Has anyone gotten Linux to install successfully on this mobo, and if so, which flavor?

I have a Neo2-S and have mixed success w/ Linux as well.  I just tried SuSe Live 9.2 and it took me about 10 times to get it to boot.  I think the only thing that I changed when it actually booted was the option to make the boot screen verbose.  I hit something like F3 and changed that option.
Knoppix 3.3 works great for me
    Knoppix 3.4 doesn't boot
    Mandrake Move 10 doesn't boot
I may have some of the version numbers wrong because I am just typing them off of the top of my head.  I also have only tried the bootable CD version because I don't want to risk any conflicts w/ my Win XP.
I am also about to get a new 200 GB SATA drive and I know that is going to complicate things even further.  I just wish that the devs would spend more time working on hardware support so n00bs won't have probs when trying out Linux.
They really need to make all distro's of Linux be able to use all of the IDE/SATA channels in a system.  This is probably dependent on the kernel though.  I don't know that much about Linux.

Can any one help me to complete the installation and execute the server successfully. I am very new to linux. Do i need to execute any other commands to complete my installation.

    Dear Rajasekhar,
this error simply comes, because the architecture of your computer is not the same as the one from the test drive. As I'm not sure, which architecture the N4S test drive uses, we simply have one of the following situations here. Either
your machine is x86_64 and the N4S is i386 or
your machine is i386 and the N4S is x86_64.
    Please check!
    Thanks,
      Hannes
