Redirecting podcast episodes in iWeb '08

Hi,
I have put off upgrading to iWeb '08 due to the problem with it changing the podcast feed.
Has anyone actually solved the problem and got it to change without losing subscribers? I have over 3,500+ subscribers and can't risk losing them.
I have seen mention of a 301 redirect, but can anyone tell me how this works, and list a step-by-step how to add it. I only see to search google, and that honestly tells me little. A "Adding a 301 redirect to iWeb '08 for Dummy's" would be great. LOL!!!
I use .Mac to host.
Thanks in advance.
Todd

You've asked the same exact questions that I have been looking for answers for -- unfortunately, I have already updated to iWeb2, before I knew anything about the way it restuctures/renames your files and thows off the iTunes subscription service. I've built up subscribers over the past 2 years and don't want to have to start all over again with a new rss feed! I tried to post a podcast yesterday -- it published to the iWeb page at http://web.mac.com/moontrolling/moontrolling/PodcastCafe/PodcastCafe.html (new v2 address, not sure why page names are repeated twice), but does not show up to subscribers via iTunes. I have been reading forums and so-called support articles and the links above but cannot for the life of me find any clear information on fixing the problem. I'm guessing I'll need to insert some kind of redirect command or something, but so far, I can't locate a good tutorial.
I can't believe Apple would release inferior software that must be messing up thousands and thousands of people who use Garage Band, iWeb, iTunes and .Mac to build and distribute podcasts! They get you all roped in to their closed little ecosystem and you're dependent on their software and services to all work together smoothly. iLife 08 has thrown several monkey wrenches in to my podcasting and webpublishing routine and I wish now, belatedly, I never upgraded!
Where's the software update fix???

  • Podcast help in iWeb

Morning all... or is it evening ? I've been trying to get to the bottom on this problem now for SO long I can't remember what it is !
    Anyway...
Creating my own website using iWeb. I have just finished my Podcast and I'm sharing it from Garage Band to iWeb. All goes well so far.
This is my problem, I don't like the default text Apple are using on the Podcast's page (where the describion is etc etc), How can I change this ???? The box the information is held in seems to be protected somehow ! It's really annoying me, because the chosen text doesn't match the rest of my website and therefore I won't be using the Podcast if I can't change it !
    Help ???? Anyone ?
    - Neil Holmes

If you are talking about the actual Podcast episode page, you should be able to change the text fonts, sizes, colors, etc. But if you are talking about the main Podcast index page, the text scheme here is set by the template and cannot be changed in iWeb.

  • PDF as podcast episodes in itunes?

I have seen this question asked before in forums but with not with an answer.
I want my video podcasts also to have pdfs downloaded as separate aside podcasts. I've seen this done many times especially in language learning podcasts. Can this be achieved using iweb?
Dropping the pdf into a placeholder doesn't work.
    Thank you!

I’ve seen .pdf files in iTunes also. I’ve done some investigating as I may be using this feature in the future for lecture suppliments. This is what I’ve found:
As you may know, you can create an ‘enhanced’ podcast in Garageband. This will allow you to place images (any kind – like lecture slides) or even .pdf files as ‘chapter markers.’ There should be a little tutorial (video I think) about how to do this with Garageband. There’s a plus and a minus to adding extra content this way. The plus, is that you can present images to your listeners at any point in the podcast. If they have the latest version of iTunes (or maybe even earlier – I’m not sure) they will see this extra content in the ‘album art’ window. They can click on the content and see it full size in a separate window. In addition, you can give this content a url – meaning that listeners can click on the link and go to a webpage or even a .pdf file (hosted somewhere). The downside is that this embedded content is ‘one dimensional.’ I tried to embed a multipage .pdf file and was only able to access the first page (because the podcast treats this as a chapter marker). All that to say that this ‘enhanced’ podcast is not what you are seeing on iTunes.
The .pdf files that you see in iTunes come from the RSS feed of the subscribed podcast. I found a tip on doing this here:
    http://www.digitalproducer.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=48529
This seems to be how it works: When a person subscribes to the RSS feed, it’s a simple file on the web somewhere. This file tells iTunes what to go and get, as well as things like content and file type. You can have an RSS feed that tells iTunes to get a podcast and a corresponding .pdf file. It’s actually pretty cool.
But here’s the hang-up: iWeb creates your RSS feed. And like most things in the 1.0 version of iWeb, advanced things require work-arounds. It looks like iWeb creates a RSS feed from your podcast blog structure. I don’t know of anyway of altering the RSS feed (like you would as shown in the link above) except for just ‘getting in there.’ As we know, iWeb has a tendency to create brand new files when performing changes. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if your ‘altered’ RSS feed that includes the .pdf link goes away when you add a new podcast episode (hence creating a new RSS feed). That means a lot of tedious work every time you add a new episode (to re-alter the RSS file to include the .pdf files).
Here’s what I see as the least ‘bang you head against the wall’ solution. Use an enhanced podcast with urls to the pdf files. You can add the file to the main episode page in your podcast or have it hosted on an ‘invisible’ page on your site. Listeners in iTunes will be able to link to the .pdf, and listeners off the iWeb page will also have the .pdf in front of them. iWeb should be OK with this, as the RSS feed isn’t being changed after publishing and the links should be stable. The other solution is to create podcasts and not separate pages for the episodes (just drag the podcast files to a folder on your iDisk under iWeb). This way, you can create an RSS feed that includes the .pdf files. However, this means that people will only be able to listen (and get the .pdf) if they are using iTunes with a subscription to your RSS feed.
    Hope this helps
    Man I can’t wait for iWeb 2.0 (c’mon March!)

  • Podcast Episode and Chapter Artwork Lost in Export

I have been trying and trying to export my podcast to disk, but when I do, only the audio content comes through. The episode artwork and the chapter artwork do not appear. When I drag-and-drop the episode into iWeb, "Drag Image Here" appears where the artwork used to be. This is the first time this has happened I have not changed a thing about how I produce my podcasts.
While troubleshooting, I also tried to export to iWeb. Then the audio content and episode artwork appeared, but none of the chapter artworks did.
Please help! My listeners expect my podcasts every Sunday morning. Thank you!
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I'm also having a problem with this, although for me it's compounded slightly by the fact that I'm not even sure where I would view the podcast track.
The podcast track does not show up when I play the file from my disk, nor when I subscribe to the podcast via iTunes from my server. It also doesn't show when viewing the .m4a file in either Quicktime Player or in a web browser (via the QT plugin), nor in the Finder preview when I Get Info... (but I can hear the audio portion in all cases).
Is there any way to check if the podcast track is actually contained in the exported file? It's a 30 second .m4a file and weighs in at 616kb.
My export settings in Garageband are for Video Podcast, I have publish podcast checked, my podcast track is visible and there is no video track. My podcast track is 7 pictures, and I've set named and assigned urls to all of them, and selected Episode artwork and named and written a description for the episode.
I've tried a couple things like hiding and re-hiding the podcast track and such, but to no avail.
Does anyone have any ideas on this? It's starting to make me annoyed =)

  • How to manage podcast episodes by: marking favorites, writing notes, etc.

I realize this is probably only a dream, but I would love a Podcasts app in which I could mark certain episodes within a station I listen to as *favorite* so that I could come back to these favorite episodes from time to time and review their content.  What would be really cool is if I could not only mark them as favorites but also write a small note to myself as to the main info points from the podcast episode, so that when reviewing things, I could find what I am looking for easier.  Since I glean information from the many podcasts I listen to for business purposes, having a library of the single best episodes (an acompanying notes) would really enhance my podcast experience.
Is there any way to do this with the Podcasts app?
Is there a different app I should explore for this?
Does itunes support something like this (or for that matter any other type of app for my iphone 5)?
    Thanks much.

i dont know how the programs work, the ftp and rss updater and whatever, but if u use feedburner, or u can change what the name of the file it edits is, or u can create a .htacess that roots it, just stick all old episodes under what it updates in the file iWeb will update and when it updates, new episodes go on top

  • Podcasting simply with iWeb problems

Hi. I have 3 podcast episodes on my iWeb/Mobile Me website. I have not submitted to iTunes. I have Apples reference to podcasting and submitting to iTunes and I plan to study and fully learn it, when my schedule permits, then maintain my custom xml in a custom location and then submit to iTunes.
In the meantime, I am having problems with people simply subscribing from my podcast page.
I send my episodes directly to iWeb from GarageBand. I submit all to Mobile Me. When someone subscribes directly from the page... iTunes downloads the episodes initially, but later, like the next day, iTunes says "there is a problem with the feed" and gives the "!". However, a lot of the time I can retry later and it will find the feed fine... Then later again it won't.
I know when I get to writing my own xml and hosting it I can customize everything as needed but I simply havent had time to dive into that yet.
I'm hoping in the meantime I have people successfully subscribe with what i send straight out of iWeb.
Can anyone think of what might be causing this problem of where iTunes can sometimes find the feed and other times not.
www.mattplay.com "The Solar Mix" is the podcast page.
Thanks for your time and help!

    bump, thx

  • Counting Podcast Episodes

Is it possible to count the number of times that a Podcast episode is downloaded? Obviously, the counter can't keep track of those picked up by iTunes.

This doesn't look to be possible within iWeb. A hit counter might give you some approximation of how many people visit your Podcasting page, but doesn't tell you how many people actually subscribe and then subsequently download your podcasts.
Apple must keep this kind of information, but only time will tell if they will build this sort of thing into either a counter for iWeb or some other control panel for Podcasting authors. Currently, things seem to be geared toward the end user and not so much the authoring standpoint.

  • Adding new podcast episodes?

After being approved, how do you add more podcast episodes to itunes through iweb?

As you add new episodes to your podcast, they will automatically become part of the rss.xml feed and people who subscribe to your podcast feed through iTunes will eventually get the new podcast episodes. This is pretty much the purpose of having RSS feeds, so that people can subscribe to one feed and automatically get new updates as they become available.
As with your podcast description, it just takes a little while for your feed to get updated with new episode information. Actually, everytime you access the rss.xml, you should be able to see the updates.

  • Podcast episodes download to wrong folder. How can I move them?

Some of my downloaded podcast episodes seem to be going to incorrect folders.
For example, I subscribe to the Photoshop TV podcast. Some of the downloaded episodes go into the iTunes Music folder>Podcasts>Photoshop TV folder. This seems to me to be the correct path.
But most of the episodes wind up in iTunes Music folder>Unknown Artist>Unknown Album folder, along with many unrelated, non-podcast files.
Now when I search in the Library for<Photoshop> all the Photoshop TV files appear, along with other files referencing Photoshop. But when I search the Library using <Photoshop TV> as the search term, only the Photoshop TV files in the Unknown Album folder show up, but not the ones in the Podcasts>Photoshop TV folder.
And finally when I cllick on Podcasts in the Source pane, once again only the Photoshop TV files in the Unknown Album show up.
I've tried adding those Photoshop TV files back to the library but they remain in the Unknown Album folder.
I haven't tried rebuilding the library yet. I will, but it seems that wont actually move any files. I could also recreating a new library moving my iTunes music folder out of the iTunes folder and then adding them all back. That seems like overkill and I might very well end up with the same problem. (I'm not sure how many of my other Podcast subscriptions have this problem, but not many)
    So,
    1) how can I get these Photoshop TV files into the Podcasts>Photoshop TV folder, and
    2) how can I make this the folder that shows up when I search via the Podcast source, and
    3) what causes this problem?

  • My podcast cover art image has been replaced by the Wordpress bluberry thumbnail in iTunes? Can anyone please help tell me what to do? I made a cover art to the right spec and added it to my podcast episodes in my iTunes library

The cover art does not show on My iTunes library even when I'm playing it. The cover art does not show in Word press either when you open it on a laptop. But I think I used a feed burner for the podcast and that's why the word press done now has come up. My question is that iTunes have Successfully I did my podcast however my son now is not my heart and I need to change that. Can anybody here please help me? I think it has something to do with the feed burner or potentially the way I have uploaded. I uploaded the podcast directly into WordPress I did not use any other hosting sites like libsyn.

I don't quite understand why you have asked me about why I'm keeping my URL secret?
It's only that I'm not clear why you are reluctant to post it. If you have a podcast in the iTunes Store then it's there for the world to see - they might search on its subject or title, for example, even if they don't actually know about it from you. If you look at other posts in this forum you will see that usually people post their URLs and then I can examine the feed and hopefully find out from that what the problem is. Without this information no-one can give you anything more than wild guesses.
If you are still reluctant to post the details and want to have a bash at diagnosing the problem yourself you may find my web pages helpful:

  • How can I delete an extra copy of a podcast episode that I downloaded via the iPhone's iTunes app?

I downloaded an episode of a podcast using the iTunes app on my iPhone.
I listened to it, and then later synced it to my iTunes.
I have iTunes set to delete podcast episodes after I listen to them, but this one is still on my iPhone.
How can I get this episode deleted from my iPhone?
    I have a Verizon iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1.

It's not clear from your post if you've tried downloading the app again from the App Store directly on your phone. If you haven't I'd give that a try.

  • Suddenly I can't download podcast episodes to iPhone, but they'll still stream

I seem to no longer be able to download podcast episodes on to my iPhone. When I update/refresh podcasts, the little numbers appear over podcasts, indicating there are new episodes: but when I go through to the podcast, I see the little "cloud + arrow" icon (whereas before they'd download automatically). I press on the cloud/arrow icon: it dims briefly, but nothing happens. In the "My Stations" view, there's the command "Download all" at the bottom: if I press that, it dims briefly, but nothing happens.
The episodes still stream fine: if I play them, they'll play, with occasional lags from streaming. But I now seem unable to download them.
Is anyone else having this issue?
Please, please don't tell me this is just Apple's latest move in "improving" Podcasts: I'd be horrified but not entirely shocked if they decided "No, you don't really want to download podcasts - you should just stream them all the time, because that's the right way to do it. And you want to do it the right way, don't you? The Apple way. The only right way."
This appears to have started this morning, and I updated with iOS 7.0.4 last night. Maybe that's a coincidence, or maybe it's connected.
Just when I was reconciling myself to the Podcasts app ...
    Thanks in advance!

Well, the tried and true may have worked: I turned the iPhone off and then on again, and now downloads seem to be working properly. On/off button, is there anything you cannot do?

  • How do I remove a podcast episode from my iPod touch that has been deleted from iTunes?

  • HT5772 How do I delete podcast episodes that I don't want to keep without having them stay in my List view in iTunes and clog it up?  I have some episodes that I've listened to that I want to keep, but others I want to delete.

Using iTunes on my MacBookPro, I find that when I want to delete selected podcast eisodes, they still stay in my List view with the cloud symbol next to them. I don't want them in my List view. I want them gone. I don't want to download them ever again. I do keep some episodes so I don't want to do the draconian thing and delete all podcast episodes once I've heard them. The other problem I have with trying to delete episodes is that some podcasts then have the same episodes pop back up as though I haven't listened to them. I've deleted a bunch of Science Friday episodes only to have them download again ready to hear. Not only that, but some episodes will finish playing or stop playing in the middle of an episode and a random podcast will start playing. Think! does that. GAH!!
Does anyone know a workaround? The same nonsense happens in any iTunes view I try.
    <Edited by Host>

You can delete photos from individual albums but not from the camera roll.  If you try to delete a photo from camera roll it will be deleted from all other albums ("locations") that contain the photo.  This is because the actual photo is in the camera roll (the albums only contain links to the photo in camera roll, not the actual photo).

  • ITunes 11.1 won't let me delete non-downloaded Podcast episodes from my Queue

These stupid episodes I don't want, have already listened-to, and don't want to even SEE are poluting my screen with their stupid little cloud icon and it's driving me CRAZY!!!
Please, someone help. Before I drive to California and start pounding on Apple's front door for why they're ruining my life!
    Thanks.

Oh how I agree.  Most agrivating thing in the world.  Must be an employee getting even with apple.  Don't see how anyone who uses this program could have let it slip through.  Doesn't anyone at apple actually buy and iphone?  Sort of like when Ford president looked out the window and he only saw toyoto cars in the employee parking lot.  Simply can't believe this.
Otherwise one other small complaint.  The backgrounds are too white and hurt my eyes.  How about a softer text background color please.
