Redo log file thread
Dear All,
In am using oracle 10.2.0.4.0 in RHEL 4.
In my current set we had two node RAC (tims1,tims2) db_name (tims).
One of the node has failed(hard disk),Failed node information has been remove from OCR(all the cluster component like...ons,vip,listener,instance).
My Question IS:After Removing All the Cluster Component does it remove redo log files associate with the failed instance.
Redo logfile Before Node Delete:
SQL> select member from v$logfile;
MEMBER
/database/tims/redo02.log
/database/tims/redo01.log
/database/tims/redo03.log
/database/tims/redo04.log
Redo Logfile After Node Delete
SQL> select member from v$logfile;
MEMBER
/database/tims/redo02.log
/database/tims/redo01.log
/database/tims/redo03.log
/database/tims/redo04.log
It means redo logfile has not been removed.
Please help me what are the redo thread i will have to remove.
SQL> select group#,sequence#,thread# from v$log;
GROUP# SEQUENCE# THREAD#
1 28868 1
2 28867 1
3 29327 2
4 29328 2
Thanks &Regards

According to my above query, thread# for group 1,2 is showing as 1 but the thread has been remove from cluster is there any use of those redo log.

Please leave your theories aside and read the replies given in the thread. The logs are going to stay as they are (should be) on the shared storage. Why you are hard-bent to remove these log files anyways? Are you not willing to add the other instance? RAC db with just one instance is really not of much use.

DROP and recreate the database. It is a *new* database without any data.
Check what datafile locations and redo log file locations you specify when creating the new database. Check if you have permissions and enough disk space.

How to recover from one corrupted redo log file in NOARCHIVE mode?
Oracle 10.2.1.
The redo log file was corrupted and Oracle can't work.
When I use STARTUP mount, I got no error msg.

Thanks.Hi, Yingkuan,
Thanks for the helps.
Actually, I have 10 redo log files exists. All of them are here.
I tried your suggestion:
alter database clear unarchived logfile group 4;
The error msg I got is the same as before:

Compared to losing all the data, it is OK for me lose some of them.
I have more than 1 TB data stored and 99.9% of them are raster images.
The loading of these data were the headache. If I can save them, I can bear the lost.
I want to grasp the last straw.
But I don't know how set the parameter: allowresetlogs_corruption
I got the error msg:

Checkpoint not complete
I have 3 redo log files of 50MB each. My database is 10g.
What is the reason?
What do i need to do ?
Thanks.Hi,
It is clearly stated that checkpoint is not complete. Thats why it could not allocate new sequence number to group 1.
We can understand that your redo log group size is insufficient. or increase the number of redo log groups.
Just test adding one more redo log group or test by increasing the size of redo log groups. -
Online redo log files being removed physically
Grid Infra version: 11.2.0.4
RDBMS Version: 11.2.0.4
Although this is a RAC DB, this is not a RAC-specific question. Hence posting it here.
Few months back, I remember issuing a command similair to below (DROP LOGFILE GROUP ...) and the redo log files were still physically present in the diskgroup.
If I remember correctly, the file is not deleted physical so that we can use the REUSE functionality (ALTER DATABASE ADD LOGFILE MEMBER '+REDO/orcl/onlinelog/redo1b.log' reuse to group 11; ) ie. you can use the REUSE command to add the logfile of the same name which is physically present in OS Filesystem/Diksgroup to redo log group.
But today, after I issued the below command, I checked the diskgroup location from ASMCMD
SQL> alter database drop logfile group 31;
Database altered.
From ASMCMD, I can that the file has disappeared physically. Is this a new feature with 11.2.0.4 or am I missing something here ?
ASMCMD> ls +DATA/msblprd/onlinelog/group_31.548.833154995
ASMCMD-8002: entry 'group_31.548.833154995' does not exist in directory '+DATA/msblprd/onlinelog/'Just to add to what Aman has said.
It is a bad practice not to let OMF decide the placement of Online redo logs because of this issue especially when you use ASM.
Executing rm command in Linux/Unix is easy but Dropping ASM aliases in the disk group can be a hassle.
This is documented.
"When a redo log member is dropped from the database, the operating system file is not deleted from disk. Rather, the control files of the associated database are updated to drop the member from the database structure. After dropping a redo log file, ensure that the drop completed successfully, and then use the appropriate operating system command to delete the dropped redo log file."
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e25494/onlineredo.htm#ADMIN11324
BTW . You don't even need to set db_create_online_log_dest_n to enable OMF for ORLs.
SQL> show parameter log_dest
NAME TYPE VALUE
db_create_online_log_dest_1 string
db_create_online_log_dest_2 string
db_create_online_log_dest_3 string

Database altered.

I think log_file_name_convert is set wrongly as you've mentioned. But If I don't want to any change to name of Online or standby redo log files in standby, I don't have to set log_file_name_convert at all. Right ?From Same link
If you specify an odd number of strings (the last string has no corresponding replacement string), an error is signalled during startup. If the filename being converted matches more than one pattern in the pattern/replace string list, the first matched pattern takes effect. There is no limit on the number of pairs that you can specify in this parameter (other than the hard limit of the maximum length of multivalue parameters). -
Physical Standby Online Redo log files,
Hi,
I'm trying to create a physical standby database (10.2.0.3). I'm a little confused about the requirement for online redo logs on the standby.
in my standby alert log I get the following when I issue:
SQL> alter database recover managed standby database disconnect from session
"ORA-00313: open failed for members of log group 1 of thread 1
ORA-00312: online log 1 thread 1: '/appl/oradata/prod/prod_1_redo_01_02.log'
ORA-27037: unable to obtain file status
SVR4 Error: 2: No such file or directory
Additional information: 3"
/appl/oradata/prod/prod_1_redo_01_02.log is the path to the location of the online redo logs on the production system. This file does not exist on the standby filesystem so the error is correct.
I assume that it gets this information from the standby control file I created on the production system and copied over to the standby.
Do I need to copy the online redo logs from the primary over to the standby site or do I need to create online redo logs on the standby?
Does the standby need to have redo log files?
I'm not talking about 'standby log files' of the type created using 'alter database add standby log file'. I've not got that far yet.
I just need to establish if a physical standby requires online redo log files?
Thanks in advance,
user234564I wanted to update this thread since I've been dealing with the exact same errors. The basic question is: "does a physical standby need the online redo logs?"
Answer: Not really, until one wants to switchover or failover (and become a primary database). Furthermore, whenever the MRP process is started, Oracle prepares for a possible switchover/failover by "clearing" the online redo logs (MetaLink note# 352879.1). It is not a big deal, since Oracle will build the actual redo files when the "alter database open resetlogs" is accomplished during a "role transition."
In our situation, we have decided to use our standby for nightly exports. We stop MRP, open the database read-only, then restart MRP. We built these standby DBs with RMAN. The RMAN duplicate process will not build the online redo log files until the database is opened for read/write (with resetlogs). However, we haven't had a need for read/write (i.e. a switchover).
Thus, every morning we have been getting the same errors that "user234564" posted above. At first the errors seemed scary, then we realized they were just a nusiance. In order to clean things up, all I did was just "cp" our stanby redo logs (SRL) into our online redo directories ensuring the names matched what was in v$logfile. When I restarted MRP, the alert log clearly showed Oracle clearing these "newly found" online redo logs. -
Unassigned Status Of Standby Redo Log Files
I created 2 standby redo log groups, and use LGWR in primary site to
transfer redo data, all are good. But when I query the V$STANDBY_LOG
view, I found that the status column of my both standby redo logs is UNASSIGNED".
also sequence#
THREAD# and all others are 0 and 0.
Any explains.Thanks for the reply Sophie. I did perform log switch at my primary site but the status of standby redo log files remained unassinged. I am pasting here the message in my Alert Log file may be that can help you to diagonose the problem.

Bottleneck when switching the redo log files.
Hello All,
I am using Oracle 11.2.0.3.
The application team reported that they are facing slowness at certain time.
I monitored the database and I found that at some switching of the redo log files (not always) I am facing a slowness at the application level.
I have 2 threads since my database is RAC, each thread have 3 redo log groups multiplexed to the FRA, with size 300 MB each.
Is there any way to optimize the switch of redo log files? knowing that my database is running in ARCHIVELOG mode.
Regards,Hello Nikolay,
Thanks for your input I am sharing with you the below information. I have 2 instances so I will provide the info from each instance

Stale status of Redo log files...
Hi ,
Why in the following sql results , the log file situated in group#3 is not stale as it is not currently used.....????
SQL> select * from v$log;
GROUP# THREAD# SEQUENCE# BYTES MEMBERS ARCHIVED STATUS FIRST_CHANGE# FIRST_TIME
1 1 485 52428800 1 NO CURRENT 14310098 17/05/2007

3 1 484 52428800 1 NO INACTIVE 14292318 17/05/2007
SQL>
SQL> select * from V$LOGFILE;
GROUP# STATUS TYPE MEMBER IS_RECOVERY_DEST_FILE
3 ONLINE C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\ORADATA\EPESY\REDO03.LOG NO
2 STALE ONLINE C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\ORADATA\EPESY\REDO02.LOG NO
1 ONLINE C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\ORADATA\EPESY\REDO01.LOG NONOTE : I use Oracle 10g v.2 on WinXp platform. The database is running in NOARCHIVELOG mode.
Many thanks,
SimonThe normal status is null (File is in use).
The stale status indicates a 'problem', as documentation part below:
A redo log file becomes INVALID if the database cannot access it. It becomes STALE if the database suspects that it is not complete or correct. A stale log file becomes valid again the next time its group is made the active group. -
Sizing the redo log files using optimal_logfile_size view.
Regards
I have a specific question regarding logfile size. I have deployed a test database and i was exploring certain aspects with regards to selecting optimal size of redo logs for performance tuning using optimal_logfile_size view from v$instance_recovery. My main goal is to reduce the redo bytes required for instance recovery. Currently i have not been able to optimize the redo log file size. Here are the steps i followed:-
In order to use the advisory from v$instance_recovery i had to set fast_start_mttr_target parameter which is by default not set so i did these steps:-
1)SQL> sho parameter fast_start_mttr_target;
NAME TYPE VALUE
fast_start_mttr_target integer 0
2) Setting the fast_start_mttr_target requires nullifying following deferred parameters :-
SQL> show parameter log_checkpoint;
NAME TYPE VALUE
log_checkpoint_interval integer 0
log_checkpoint_timeout integer 1800
log_checkpoints_to_alert boolean FALSE
SQL> select ISSES_MODIFIABLE,ISSYS_MODIFIABLE,ISINSTANCE_MODIFIABLE,ISMODIFIED from v$parameter where name like'log_checkpoint_timeout';
ISSES_MODIFIABL ISSYS_MODIFIABLE ISINSTANCE_MODI ISMODIFIED
FALSE IMMEDIATE TRUE FALSE
SQL> alter system set log_checkpoint_timeout=0 scope=both;
System altered.
SQL> show parameter log_checkpoint_timeout;
NAME TYPE VALUE
log_checkpoint_timeout integer 0
3) Now setting fast_start_mttr_target
SQL> select ISSES_MODIFIABLE,ISSYS_MODIFIABLE,ISINSTANCE_MODIFIABLE,ISMODIFIED from v$parameter where name like'fast_start_mttr_target';
ISSES_MODIFIABL ISSYS_MODIFIABLE ISINSTANCE_MODI ISMODIFIED
FALSE IMMEDIATE TRUE FALSE
Setting the fast_mttr_target to 1200 = 20 minutes of checkpoint switching according to Oracle recommendation
Querying the v$instance_recovery view
4) SQL> select ACTUAL_REDO_BLKS,TARGET_REDO_BLKS,TARGET_MTTR,ESTIMATED_MTTR, OPTIMAL_LOGFILE_SIZE,CKPT_BLOCK_WRITES from v$instance_recovery;
ACTUAL_REDO_BLKS TARGET_REDO_BLKS TARGET_MTTR ESTIMATED_MTTR OPTIMAL_LOGFILE_SIZE CKPT_BLOCK_WRITES
276 165888 *93* 59 361 16040
Here Target Mttr was 93 so i set the fast_mttr_target to 120
SQL> alter system set fast_start_mttr_target=120 scope=both;
System altered.
Now the logfile size suggested by v$instance_recovery is 290 Mb
SQL> select ACTUAL_REDO_BLKS,TARGET_REDO_BLKS,TARGET_MTTR,ESTIMATED_MTTR, OPTIMAL_LOGFILE_SIZE,CKPT_BLOCK_WRITES from v$instance_recovery;
ACTUAL_REDO_BLKS TARGET_REDO_BLKS TARGET_MTTR ESTIMATED_MTTR OPTIMAL_LOGFILE_SIZE CKPT_BLOCK_WRITES
59 165888 93 59 290 16080
After altering the logfile size to 290 as show below by v$log view :-
SQL> select GROUP#,THREAD#,SEQUENCE#,BYTES from v$log;
GROUP# THREAD# SEQUENCE# BYTES
1 1 24 304087040
2 1 0 304087040
3 1 0 304087040
4 1 0 304087040
5 ) After altering the size i have observed the anomaly as redo log blocks to be applied for recovery has increased from *59 to 696* also now v$instance_recovery view is now suggesting the logfile size of *276 mb*. Have i misunderstood something
SQL> select ACTUAL_REDO_BLKS,TARGET_REDO_BLKS,TARGET_MTTR,ESTIMATED_MTTR, OPTIMAL_LOGFILE_SIZE,CKPT_BLOCK_WRITES from v$instance_recovery;
ACTUAL_REDO_BLKS TARGET_REDO_BLKS TARGET_MTTR ESTIMATED_MTTR OPTIMAL_LOGFILE_SIZE CKPT_BLOCK_WRITES
*696* 646947 120 59 *276* 18474
Please clarify the above output i am unable to optimize the logfile size and have not been able to achieve the goal of reducing the redo log blocks to be applied for recovery, any help is appreciated in this regard.sunny_123 wrote:
Sir oracle says that fast_start_mttr target can be set to 3600 = 1hour. As suggested by following oracle document
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B10500_01/server.920/a96533/instreco.htm
I set mine value to 1200 = 20 minutes. Later i adjusted it to 120=2 minutes as Target_mttr suggested it to be around 100 (if fast_mttr_target value is too high or too low effective value is contained in target_mttr of v$instance_recovery)Just to add, you are reading the documentation of 9.2 and a lot has changed since then. For example, in 9.2 the parameter FSMTTR was introduced and explicitly required to be set and monitored by the DBA for teh additional checkpoint writes which might get caused by it. Since 10g onwards this parameter has been made automatically maintained by Oracle. Also it's been long that 9i has been desupported followed by 10g so it's better that you start reading the latest documentation of 11g and if not that, at least of 10.2.

Hi,
By mistake the redo log files have been removed.
Hence we tried to create the redo log files.
After creating it when select * from v$log is done, it is as follows
SQL> select * from v$log;
GROUP# THREAD# SEQUENCE# BYTES MEMBERS ARC STATUS
FIRST_CHANGE# FIRST_TIM
1 1 0 1073741824 1 YES UNUSED
0
3 1 0 1073741824 1 YES UNUSED
0
2 1 0 1073741824 1 NO CURRENT
179433372 20-NOV-10
Due to this, whatever alter command we use, it is not working.
For ex.
SQL> alter database open resetlogs;
alter database open resetlogs
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01194: file 1 needs more recovery to be consistent
ORA-01110: data file 1: '/alcatel/oracle/oradata/SNM/system01.dbf'
SQL> alter database mount;
alter database mount
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01100: database already mounted
SQL> alter system switch logfile;
alter system switch logfile
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01109: database not open
SQL> ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
ALTER DATABASE OPEN
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01589: must use RESETLOGS or NORESETLOGS option for database open
WE want to change the status in v$log table from Current to ACTIVE and UNUSED to INACTIVE.
How can we do that?
Can anyone help us?
Regards
