Reduce File Size - File smallest with Acrobat 4.0/5.0 compatibility

This is with Acrobat 8.
Contrary to the information on the Reduce File Size dialog which says, Setting Compatibility to later versions of Acrobat will allow greater reduction in file size, I have a number of PDF files which gain the most reduction in size when set to Acrobat 4 and later.
Here is the various sizes by Acrobat revision chosen for one of the documents:
Make Compatible With
File Size
Retain Existing
79,202,311
Acrobat 4.0 and later
19,884,757
Acrobat 5.0 and later
19,884,773
Acrobat 6.0 and later
27,611,913
Acrobat 7.0 and later
27,611,909
Acrobat 8.0 and later
27,611,920
After the conversion when the file is reopened in Acrobat the file appears the same visually.
So the question is, am I losing any content by choosing the reduction to the smaller file size of Acrobat 4.0/5.0?
As I have a large number of these files the additional space saving would be good but not at the loss of significant information.
Thanks,
Jay

You will lose any information that is not compatible with AA4 or AA5. It may be that the information is not needed and so there is no visual difference.

• Please advice on adding 3D-animation files into a PDF with Acrobat Pro DC.

Hello,
Where is the button animation in Acrobat Pro DC?
Can you give me advice on adding 3D-animation files into a PDF with Acrobat Pro DC.
I have Acrobat PRO DC .
Thank you.

Hi George,
I just tried adding the files as attachments; however I didn't like doing that because it increased the file size of my PDF document quite a bit.
I'm not sure if you're familiar with the "Insert Object" command in MS Word, but I want to do the same thing in my PDF document...but the key is, anyone must to be able to open the embedded file from any location.
I created an MS Word document with several embedded objects. I was later asked to PDF the Word document, but since embedded MS Word objects do not migrate to the PDF, I am now trying to embed the same files I embedded into my Word document into my PDF document over top of the icon image. The file types I'm trying to embed include MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe PDF. Does this make more sense? I want to create a hyperlink over top the icon image that was PDF'd from the MS Word document which allows any user to click on the link and open the separate file.

• How do I edit a PDF file that was created with Acrobat 6

I was given a PDF catalog file from one of my manufactures to use on my web site, I was told that I need to edit the file and take out the last page which is for my eyes only not the public, but the way they instructed me to do so has not worked, so does anybody have an idea on how to do this?
Also they have tried to send me a corrected file with the last page removed but the file size is to big to be sent through email. Any help would be great. Thank You

dgnvarsitydad I think you are posting in the wrong thread.

Ok thank you I will try this but how will I know if there is a security set and also my mistake what I downloaded was Acrobat X Pro which is $200 from Adobe's web site. I am not very familiar with Acrobat but I will give it a try thank you again. Gary
To see if there is security, open the document, go to File>Properties>Security. It will tell you what is allowed and what is not allowed.
Keep in mind that Acrobat Pro is not $200 unless you have a qualifying older version to upgrade from. If not, it's more like $449.

• Blurry images when I combine files into a PDF with Acrobat

I have created 4 files in Photoshop with a combination of graphics and text. I am trying to make a PDF that can be emailed, so it only has to look good onscreen. I have saved each file in numorous ways (jpg, tiff, pdf, bmp etc...) I have eliminated any compression. When I pull the files up individually they look great, but when I try and combine them in a PDF the images get blurry. I have selected the largest file size, change compression for jpg (and the others) in acrobat. I can't figure out what I am missing. Why do the files look good until I combine them?

A little confusing. How to eliminate compression when using JPG or PDF?
If you export the images from Photoshop to PDF, will they look good on screen? If so, and you import and combine in Acrobat, they should not be changed, unless you select "Save as optimised PDF", because then optimisation settings could re-encode the images to lower resolution.

• Opening downloaded files on a Mac with Acrobat 11.0

I'm on a Mac Pro running OS 10.8.2. Since downloading and installing Acrobat Pro 11.0, I can not open any PDF files downloaded from the internet. I can still open (with Acrobat 11.0) PDF files downloaded previously with Acrobate Pro 9.5. I get the error message -"There was an error opening this document. There was a problem reading this document (14)."

• Right clicking PDF files and printing those with Acrobat Reader X

We have a Windows XP computer with Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional and Acorbat Reader X.
Now when we open PDF files they open with Acrobat Reader X wich is fine.
But when we try selecting PDF files and right click Print them they print with Acrobat 7 Professional.
The problem is with Adobe Acrobat Professional 7 it doesn't print all the files we selected.
We select 50 files and only about 10 are printed and those are always random.
So is there anyway to enable the print option to print with Acrobat Reader X ?

This is not a desirable situation. Adobe recommends against having Reader and Acrobat on the same machine, unless they're both version X, exactly because it can cause this kind of conflicts.

• Folio article file size increases massively with more buttons

Hello,
we are about to finish up a DPS project and now have some serious problems with the folio sizes.
We did all the usual things to make folios smaller (cropped every image to the trimmed size, pdf articles, vektor overlays etc.)
So we made some tests and discovered a really strange behavior:
We have one single article with a fullscreen MSO containing 7 picture status, and seven buttons (with the same pictures as thumbnails) that lead to the appropriate statuses.
First we tried to experiment deleting images from the MSO but this had no effect on the file size. But as we deleted the seven buttons the file size changed from 10MB to 52MB!
The size of all the assets (images and ID file) from this article is only 12 MB.
Is this a known bug? Is there a way around it? It is some kind of crazy when an uploaded folio has 4 times the size as all his assets?!?!
Thanks in advance,
nils

Hi Bob,
sorry for my late reply.
I have done some additional testing and came to the conclusion that no button is responsible for the big file sizes.
It was the overlay setting after all (sorry for pointing in the wrong direction). As I switched the slideshow from "Raster" to "Vector" the file size decreased plenty. (I thougt I checked this but actually I did it only in vertical articles.)
However I did not know that the export format has such an impact on file size. This one article decreased from 52 MB to 17 MB. And it was only one slideshow with 7 (retina) images inside.
Changing all the slideshows in our 50 article folio (about 35) decreased the file size from 576 MB to 243 MB!
Thanks,
nils

• XML file size increases GREATLY with ![CDATA[

I have several .xml files that provide info for a website of
mine and was quite surprised to discover, while I was uploading
them, that some of them were around 60-70kb, while others were 4kb
or less. Knowing that the amount of content in all of them doesn't
vary that much, I noticed that the biggest file sizes corresponded
to the files using <![CDATA[ ]]>.
I included a sample file code below. It's in Portuguese, but
I think it's still obvious that this file could not be more than a
few kb, and Dreamweaver (CS3) saves it with a whopping 62kb!
I tried saving the exact same file in Text Edit and it
resulted in a normal file size.
Has anyone encountered similar situations? I'm guessing this
is some sort of bug, that Dreamweaver puts some extra content -
somewhere - because of the CDATA. Is there any sort of reason or
fix for this?
Thanks in advance.

Ok... embarassing moment. Just realized that DW CS3 is not
guilty. In Leopard, in the file's Get Info panel, I changed the
preferred application to open it, and the file's size changed
according to different applications. Reverting back to DW CS3, it
still resulted in the 60-70kb size, but deleting the file and
saving a new one it the same name solved the problem.
Sorry guys.

• HUGE file sizes when editing with Photoshop CS5

Reluctantly I've set Photoshop CS5 up to process photographs for things like barrel distortion that my 18-200 Nikon seems especially prone to.
I open any given photograph with apple-shift-O, make my changes and save. However, the copy that's then put back into Aperture 3 the file size comes out as anything between 30mb and 70mb per photograph - far too big.
I've tried both TIFF 16-bit) and PNG (16-bit) options in Aperture which makes no difference. I've had a look through Photoshop CS5 options but can't see anything which looks correct.
Thanks

mjw_london wrote:
I can only assume that it's like this because Aperture 3 only basically allows 2 options, to open in an external editor with either TIFF or PSD - both of which are undesirable because of their huge filesizes. Is there a way of making it open in an external editor with JPEG?
Like jade said, it is not ridiculous. Ideally you would be shooting RAW not (lossy) JPEG to start, but even if you do shoot lossy JPEG you should convert to a lossless format like TIFF or PSD for the entire process of any editing. Large file sizes are a good thing not a bad thing because larger sizes represent more image data. And, hard drive capacity is cheap.
Note that JPEG is a lossy compression algorithm, so when you open a JPEG in Aperture, Photoshop, whatever, the file is decompressed and becomes larger. You can again compress the file (such as back to JPEG) when done editing but be aware that each new compression by a lossy algorithm like JPEG loses image data and may also add undesirable visible artifacts.

• File Size TOO LARGE with linked files

Recently, I am working with illustrator CS6.
After inserting quite a lot of linked images (without embadding), the file size becomes much larger, up too nearly 400MB.
I saved without pfd competatble funcion already, but the file size is sill verry large
I did not face the same problem working with CS5 before, is that a bug for CS6?
or are there any suggested ways to solve?
THANKS

Are you "Placing" the image files or are you copying and pasting the files as so-called smart objects where they come in on their own layer? See if you can flatten the file. Another option is build the images in Photoshop and bring them in as one image.

• PowerShell Copy Biggest (file size) File to Destination

Hi guys,
I have the following code, works butter smooth. Copies a few files/folders from source to destination then applies ACL's. See that 3rd "copy-item"
which gets a .nk2 and copies it over? Well in the source there are MULIPLE .nk2 files (with different names), how can I get it to scan that \outlook folder and copy the biggest (file size) .nk2 item and rename is outlookprofile.nk2?

remove-item -path \\$file_server\profiles$\$user -recurse -force
I'll need it to keep the ACL from source to destination as well.
Thanks guys.

get-childitem "\\$file_server\profiles$\$user\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\*.nk2" | sort -property Length -descending | select -first 1 | %{

Get-ACL $_ | Set-ACL -path "\\$file_server\userhome$\$user\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.nk2"
Give this a whirl, hope it helps!
Not quite sure I follow what you're trying to do with renaming, but this should get you far enough to sort that bit yourself. If not, please clarify.

• Can't open pdf files in Windows 8 with Acrobat XI

I have windows 8, and Mozilla Thunderbird email client. When attempting to open PDFs I get this message "Adobe Reader could not open 'Wiring Invoice 409343281 Dated 04_05_2013-2.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)." I have tried documents from numerous different sources, all with the same result. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, repaired, restarted, etc. I did not have this issue with XP and Acrobat reader X. HELP!! I cannot print invoices until this is corrected....thanks!

Hi,
Are you try to open PDF file attachments from Mozilla Thunderbird.?
Could you try to save the PDF file locally and then try to open the PDF file?
Or try downloading sample PDF from here http://www.samplepdf.com/sample.pdf and open it in Adobe Reader.

• File size too big with project manager

I’m working on a single video file with a size of 46,44 GB (Apple XDCAM HD422 1080i50 (50 MBit/s CBR), 1920 × 1080 (1888 × 1062), 16,7 Mill.).
Clips from this file are copied to three seperate sequences (One rough cut and two final cuts).
When I try to backup the project the resulting project size is nearly as large as the original project size (FCP7 trims it to approx. 2GB)
Premiere creates five mxf file with sizes between 1 and 18GB each.
How can I lower these sizes and use this feature like e.x in Final Cut Pro the Media Manager which stores only the needed cutouts and Footage for archiving purpose?
These are my settings. The addition or removal of handles does not make any difference.

I'm having the same issue with .mxf files directly imported from a Sony F5 camera. Wanting to do the same thing and the resulting "trimmed" project is 40gb for a 1 minute film. I checked the new trimmed project folder and it looks like Premiere Pro CC 2014 isn't trimming the clips to the length they are used in the sequence.
Not sure where to go from here.

• Why did my file size get bigger with ProRes

I just used Mpeg StreamClip to convert my raw mark 2 footage to prores422 and the file sie wen from: 42.7MB to 159.3MB
I know that whats his name... philip bloom recommends Apple XDCAM EX 108030p
However, the quality gos down with this. Maybe I will try Apple XDCAM HD
Any thoughts?

If your original acquisition is HDV and H.264 the Apple Pro Res 422 is fine, you wont gain anything going with HQ or 4444.
Your H.264 files got much larger because H.264 is heavily compressed and not designed for editing, it is a 'distribution' codec. It is best to convert to a I-frame codec such as Apple Pro Res for editing.
Your next problem may be mixing two different frame rates. The Canon 5D records at 30.0 frames per second and the A1 records at 29.97. I use Cinema Tools to conform (slo-mo) my 5d clips to a friendly frame rate. You need to realize audio will not stay in sync over long durations with this conform process.

• PDF File Size - Live Type with Flattened Images

I am looking for a way to Export my PDF to include live type but flatten all other imagery (like saving as a JPG).
I work on fairly large catalogs - intended for print - that later need to be saved for web. The imagery is just too complex for the PDF to constantly be rendering every image element on every page of my catalog. These catalogs need to include that searchable text data & live links built within InDesign.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am currently on CS5.5, but hoping to upgrade soon. Thank you!

See this post: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/998458 If you want to make the file even smaller, adjust the compression settings to a lower resolution.
