Reduce size of custom images in Address Book

I love Address Book's wonderful integration with Mail.app, my iPod and even my phone. So, one day I decided to set custom images for almost all of my contacts - copying and pasting images into the fields.
However, afterwards, I realised that my 275 contact address book has ballooned from 2MB to 49.9MB thanks to the pictures. If I export the contacts into a Group vCards, it is an astounding 121.8 MB.
I feel that Apple should've limited the size of the pictures (automatically resize it just as iPhoto does for email and iWeb does for the web). However, this isn't the case.
Thus, my question is:
Is there a script or anything to reduce the size of those custom images? I am not looking forward to deleting the pictures and resizing them before importing them into Address Book. If there is an automated way of resizing the pictures, please let me know!
Thank you very much!

Hi mintchocicecream,
Have a look at this:

May be of no help, but sounds like you have larger that necessary files.
I do mot know of any script, short of a photoshop group resize that would work. Certainly nothing in Address Book.
Good Luck
John

  • Custom image from Address book not syncing to Exchange.

I am running Mac OS X v 10.7.5. I have added custom images to contacts in address book. I have an Exchange account which will sync the data (ie name, address, email) but not the custom image. Is there away to have custom images sync to Exchange/Outlook?

I'm Running Mac OS X Lion, and have seen that changes made in the mac address book do not sync to gmail contacts but changes to gmail contacts do sync to the mac address book.
Making a change to a contact on my phone does sync to gmail contacts, and then to the mac address book.
Another test I ran was to change the same contact in gmail and mac address book.  I made a change to a mobile number and notes in one contact on my mac address book, attempted to sync, and the change does not appear in my gmail contacts.  I tried multiple times, restarted my web browser, restarted mac address book, the sync would not work.  I changed the same contact mobile number in gmail with a slightly different change to the notes field so I could see when an update occurred, and when I told mac address book to sync it recognized a conflict. When I select the mac address book change to resolve the conflict, the gmail contact is not updated.  When I repeated the experiment and selected the gmail contact to resolve the conflict the change is made in the mac address book.

  • Rotating images in Address Book??

I am rather confused at the determination of Address Book to store contact photo's on one side??
I have rotated images right round 360 degress but no matter what way up they are once I drag them on to the image frame, address book automatically rotates the image 90 degrees counterclockwise of the right way up???
It is clever how it knows but also very frustrating? Does anybody else have this experience?

    Hi Wesley,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Are you saying that Address Book takes an perfectly good upright image and rotates it 90 degrees CCW?
I am a little confused by your statement.."It is clever how it knows but also very frustrating?"
What program are you using to edit/rotate your images?

  • Can't change contact images in Address Book

I am trying to update contact images in Address Book. Everytime I add a new image, it blinks for a moment, then goes back to being black. In my email, the images flit between being available, being old images, and being blank. I've been trying for two hours so it's not a "sync" or "just wait" issue. It keeps telling me that I am a different person, assigning a different contact card to myself, flitting back and forth between contact cards declaring that they are "me," and randomly allowing or not allowing pictures to be updated. What's going on?

Problem solved. Finder > Library > Preferences. There were three files: com.apple.something or another and address book.something.. (I can't remember).
Please realize that is only slightly more helpful than it started with a letter in the alphabet and ends in plist. Almost everything in that folder starts with com.apple. That is the default naming convention. It is a reverse domain name system (think reverse web address). So all Apple's preferences start with com.apple.
For anyone trying to fix a similar problem, please don't randomly delete plist files. While most will cause no harm and will get rebuilt automatically, deleting some will cause a little shock and awe. com.apple.mail.plist being the most shocking. If you delete it, you will not see your email in Mail until you recreate your accounts exactly as you had them before you deleted the plist. The email is still there, it is just that Mail doesn't know how to find them.

  • I'm trying to print a custom envelope fro address book and keep getting the message No Pages were selected from the document.

I'm trying to print a custom envelope from Address book using one of my groups. I keep getting a No Pages were selected message. Anybody have any Ideas?

Hello, I find that only entries with Home or Work filled in with an address will show.
Might try right clicking on this link & saving Apple's Addy, then import this vCard, select it & see if it shows one envelope...

  • Problem Adding Custom Labels to Address Book

I add custom labels to the Template in Address Book Preferences. There's no problem at this stage, the custom labels appear along with the preset labels in the Template. But when I leave Preferences, go back to Address Book and add a new card, the custom labels disappear.
    What am I doing wrong?
Any help would be appreciated. And thank you in advance.

Barney-15E: Thanks for your previous reply!
Would you check this work-around for me? I think I found a way to compose a master list of custom labels and have them available for multiple cards (new and old) in Address Book on a MacBookPro and in the Contacts directory on an iPhone. I have tried compiling a master list of custom labels using Address Book Preferences/Template and I find there's a limit to the number of custom labels I can add as a label for each field.
    Here's my workaround.
    1) Go to the iPhone Contacts directory.
    2) Add a new card.
    2) Enter data in these fields: address, date, email, and phone. The standard label will appear on the screen below the data.
    3) Tap the standard label and you will go to a screen with 2 windows. The top window has the standard or preset labels for that field but below it in a second window is a button "Add Custom Label". Tap on this button and you will be able to add the text for a Custom Label for each of these fields. This will then become a master list of Custom Labels that can be used in most labels in the iPhone Contacts Directory.
    4) If you have your IPhone set up to synch with your MacBookPro or iMac, the entry in the iPhone Contacts directory will be transferred to your other Mac, with the Custom Labels.
Barney - 15E: Can you find a glitch??? To me it seems to make a master list of custom labels available for all card, new and old. The only problem is that the input has to be done on the iPhone.

  • Truncated custom labels in Address Book problem

When I create a custom label for telephone numbers in Address Book, for eg I change "mobile" to "work mobile", only the first eight or nine characters of this are displayed. The remainder of the label is truncated to ... regardless of the size of the window.
With acres of empty white space to the right of the telephone number, it would be nice to be able to see the entire label. Does anyone know how to do this?
    Thanks,
    Dave.

Thank you for your reply. But I do want to clarify. I am not trying to sync Address Book Groups, but rather custom-named fields from Address Book. The computer program allows you to give your own name to any of the fields on a contact's card. In the example I gave, the single contact card named "GoDaddy" has three custom labels, one for each of the contact people within the company.  Something like this:
    GoDaddy
    Tim - xxx-xxx-xxxx
    Ryan - xxx-xxx-xxxx
    James - xxx-xxx-xxxx
    Main: xxx-xxx-xxxx
Rather than using the standard "mobile", "fax", "home" labels, I've assigned my own values. I'm wondering (and now with significant doubts) if the blackberry will automatically sync those entries.
Soon I will be able to test it myself, but as of now I still do not have access to a blackberry to test this...

  • Images in Address Book 4.0.4

    Hi,
I am updating my address book and I was wondering if there is way to increase the image size for my contacts. At the moment it just show a tiny image and I have to double click it to see a larger version.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi petelocke,
The maximum image size for Address Book is 64X64 pixels or a multiple thereof, but if you have something larger (ie.128X128) it will still display 64 pixels square. A larger file size will sometimes compress to a smaller image, and I have found that 72 dpi at 64 square gives me the best resolution.
But like Allan said, no way to get that image any bigger. Actually, I would be interested in knowing how you are able to double click and get the image to display larger - is this in Address Book?
    Good Luck,
    John

  • Is it possible to change the size of the Picture in Address Book

Hi, the contact pictures in the Address Book are way to small, is there the possibility to show them bigger??
    Thanks
    MacBook White 1,83 - 80GB HD - 2GB - EX-RSS   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

No, I don't think so. When you put a picture on the card you can control what part of the picture is used, but there is no control for the subsequent size.
You could try using OS X Feedback and ask them to change it in the next release ...

  • Custom fields in address book merged in pages document

I viewed this Paragraph below from the following link on the Apple Site
    http://www.apple.com/business/profiles/iwork/sara.html
As an administrative tool, she says, “All the documents we create with Pages — contracts, correspondence, receipts — are set up with data fields for the customer information I keep in my Address Book.
The drag-and-drop ease of Pages’ Mail Merge is just huge for us. Not only names and contacts, but wedding dates, locations, and the details of the service package they’ve ordered. So I can just drag the contact over any document, and it automatically populates the fields with the client’s information. This ensures that all our crucial customer information stays up to date and in one place, and we never have to duplicate work when we create documentation.
__ I cant find out how to do this as all the forums say this is not possible. I have contacted the person but do not have a response from them as yet. I have tried to do this but it wont populate the fields into the pages document..hmmmmm
Can this be done as described

Does Apple post this stuff on their site that the program cant do?
Did you check out the link? Did I read the article wrong? Can we advise them of this?
It seems that you don't understand what this forum is.
Here we are users trying to help other users.
The terms os use ask everybody to search in the existing thread before asking a question.
It seems that you didn't do that because searching in
    "more options"
    "iWork '08"
    with the keyword "Addressbook"
gave some threads in which I peeked:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6559156
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6374991
So, as you may see, I checked the links, I knew what was written in them.
There is no false advertising or misleading here because the contents of these forums is not written by Apple's employees, just by users as you are.
So, I repeat: you reposted when the response was already available:

  • Custom fields from Address Book on desktop don't sync to iPhone

I recently switched from a Palm Treo to iPhone. The sync wasn't seamless so I am editing contact info one at a time. I noticed that when I add custom fields to a card in Address Book they don't sync to my contacts in iPhone...why?
For example, I've created fields for the names of children but when I view the contact on my phone I only get the contacts Bday, Anniv and Notes section. Very frustrating since I'm spending time filling all of this info in. Can anyone help? Thanks!!

I also migrated from a Treo to an iPhone, and was hoping to have custom field information transfer from my desktop to my iPhone. It would be rather handy when I need help remembering the name of someone's spouse, etc. Has someone created an iPhone app for this perhaps?

  • Order of custom labels on Address Book

When I edit custom labels on telephone field, in a new Card, and save it, the order of custom labels changes everytime I entry in Address Book's Card, apparently in random order.
    Can someone help me?

same problem here. I even trashed my cache and prefs for Address Book, re-opened the application and set up the custom template from scratch. Alas, the order of fields seems completely random once a filled-out card is displayed. Trashing the prefs seemed to help from the standpoint that I can now go in and (very tediously) cut/paste info from the fields (and change the labels accordingly) and it seems to stay in that order once saved. Annoying problem…
Update: Well, it seems that the order is not retained once closing and re-opening the Address Book application. Each time it re-opens, the fields are in a random order. The order of the fields in MobileMe seem slightly more stable, but not completely. Very strange.

  • Referencing and hopfully deleting custom dates in Address Book?

I'm really struggling with this as a AS newbie.
I want to delete all custom date values from selected Address Book records. I am using the following script which successfully deletes Birthdays but cannot handle custom dates such as "Anniversary".
can someone please help me out?

  • Cannot change images in address book

I have a very vexing problem that I cannot solve and would appreciate some help.
I am running OSX 10.7.2, although I had the same problem with Snow Leopard. I have an iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 gig of RAM, although I don't thing that's relevant.
For some address book records, every time I change the photo, it reverts to the original photo. And it happens almost immediately. All I have to do is update the photo, navigate to a different contact and back again, and the photo has reverted.  I can't even clear the image. I keeps returning. I have tried the following:
    1. Confirmed that all synching is OFF. I am not  using iCloud, I am not syncing contacts with Spanning Sync or Bento or any other app.
    2. Trashed all address book preferences.
    3. Trashed all images in User/Library/Application Support/Address Book/Images. They all magically reappear when I relaunch AB.
    4. Tried steps 2 and 3 in combination.
    5. Repaired my disk permissions.
    6. Tried launching AB in 32 bit mode.
Nothing works! Very frustrated and would appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

I can't help, but I have tried to get photos into Address Book (when they are supposed to appear in Mail as well). I have succeeded with two photos but the third will not appear anywhere. I have given up on this. Its a nice feature but not essential and not worth the effort.

  • Custom Labels in Address Book

I've been following the news about Blackberry Desktop for the mac, but I will not have the opportunity to try it for myself until another 2 weeks,  so I hope that the community here will be able to provide the answer to some of the questions that I have not seen answered here yet.
In the Apple Address Book I use custom labels to designate the names of particular contact people within an organization. For instance, on my contact card for  GoDaddy support I have three phone numbers, each with a custom label of the contact person's name.
Has anybody used custom labels in their sync? Is the Blackberry then able to recognize the labels properly?

Thank you for your reply. But I do want to clarify. I am not trying to sync Address Book Groups, but rather custom-named fields from Address Book.
