Reduce to 2 colors

On my iPad, using Adobe Touch, is it possible to change a simple little black and white image to just 2 colors- black or white?

Not sure if I quite understand what effect you're trying to achieve but you could try:
1) de-saturating the image (turning it to black and white) If you've not already done so
2) using the "posterIze colour" effect and choose 1 colour. This will force just one colour (black) against white.
Adjustment using "levels" of the b&w image (after step 1) will influence which shades will be made black in step 2.

  • How to reduce number of colors in an image

    I am fairly new to Photoshop and I'm learning as I go, so I apologize for using your time.  I haven't worked with images that much - I've used MS Digital Image Suite with photos from my camera.  That's the extent of my knowledge.
    I am taking over a job from someone who is gone and I can't ask him how to do this.  He used Photoshop to reduce the number of colors in an image (for example, a color drawing or clipart) to 2-6 colors.  I haven't been able to figure this out.  I've visited this site that explains how to reduce tones but it's still a lot of colors.  I thought I might learn something from this link that explained how to make Photoshop cartoons, but I didn't.  I've done a lot of searching but nothing seems to explain this.  I know that the other guy had some knowledge of Photoshop but he wasn't a power user.
    Thanks to anyone who will help me.  (I am using CS5.)

    Are you sure that he was using Photoshop? (see my third solution)
    There are some plug-ins for Photoshop, but they basically do the same as the posterize or index mode: http://www.topazlabs.com/simplify/ (commercial) see this panel for colorizing comic art: http://vimeo.com/user3771002/videos
    I would rather use posterize, as an adjustment layer, as you can control it.
    Try with this layer stack, from bottom to top:
    Convert the original image in a Smart Object, in order to use Smart filters and blur the image (Gaussian Blur, or noise>median or blur>smart blur or blur>surface blur could be interesting internatives) would be useful, to make smoother posterized areas.
    A dodge/burn layers (a neutral gray layer in overlay mode) to adjust areas using the Dodge/burn tools.
    the Posterize Adjustment layer, with very few colors
    On top of it, put a gradient map adjustment layer, to control the posterized colors
    Vectorizing in Illustrator can also be used to reduce the number of colors. Live Trace: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/illustrator/cs/using/WS714a382cdf7d304e7e07d0100196cbc5f-6229a .html

  • Reduce number of colors in an Image

    Hi,
    I have a bufferedimage that is a screenshot of my pc, what can i do to reduce the number of colors in the image to 512 or somthing? The final image will be in JPEG form.
    Thanks

    I tried this code, but there must be a bug or something cos most things turn black and red....even when i specify 512 colors...I saw http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=31&thread=446716 that someone else had this problem, but i did not find a fix. Its weird cos I used another java quantizer that did the same thing..
    Here is my code:
    byte[] = toByteArray(getScreenshot());
    /*****Takes a screenshot*****/
    private BufferedImage getScreenshot() {
         try {
              Robot robo = new Robot();
              Rectangle rect = (GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment().getDefaultScreenDevice().getDefaultConfiguration().getBounds());
              BufferedImage img = robo.createScreenCapture(rect);
              return img;
         } catch (AWTException exc) {
              exc.printStackTrace();
         return null;
    /*****Saves a BufferedImage as a JPEG*****/
    private byte[] toByteArray(BufferedImage img) {
         try {
              //WANT TO QUANTIZE img HERE
              //Encode
              ByteArrayOutputStream out = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
              JPEGImageEncoder encoder = JPEGCodec.createJPEGEncoder(out);
              JPEGEncodeParam param = encoder.getDefaultJPEGEncodeParam(img);
              param.setQuality(.45f, false);
              encoder.encode(img, param);
              out.flush();
              out.close();
              return out.toByteArray();
         } catch (Exception e) {}
         return null;

    Hi Everyone,
    I just deleted PS CS6 and installed PS CC 2014. I'm trying to use the Liquify Filter and it does not work.  When I click on the Liquify Filter, my photo does not appear properly.  The photo appears as two flourescent color fields - bright turquoise and lime green!  Can anyone help me with this?  Also, does anyone know if I can re-install Photoshop CS6?
    Thanks!
    Laraine

    Hi Everyone....I figured it out.  Strangely, although I had NEVER used Liquify in PS CC 2014....I just realized that in Liquify Advanced Mode that the "SHOW MASK" option was on by default!  I unchecked SHOW MASK.  Everything is OK. Whew!  Tks!

  • Reducing Video Noise (colored grain)

    Is there a way to reduce video noise in FCE and if so, how?

    I'm a little surprised since it is such a common problem in video taken in low light. I currently use Pinnacle studio on the PC side, which is a little more robust then imovie but far from FCE, and it has a pretty nice noise reduction filter which cleans up the video considerably. I took a poorly lit video clip which I was able to easily clean up in Pinnacle, into an apple store yesterday to see if I could clean it up equally or better in FCE and could do quite a bit except for the noise reduction. I'm doing this test due to my interest in switching to a Mac, mainly for video reasons. Are there plugins that could help with noise?

  • 2GB nano screen has severely reduced and dithered colors

    I purchased a first-gen 2GB iPod nano, brand new, from a seller on eBay. It arrived yesterday and was working perfectly until an hour after use, when the colors on the screen suddenly became very white and washed-out. I reset the device, and the colors returned to their normal brightness, but it now appears as if the screen's color depth has gone down significantly -- it almost looks like setting Windows' color depth to 256 colors.
    I've tried resetting the device, draining and recharging the battery, and restoring the device, to no avail. Any suggestions?

    Never mind, the problem seems to have fixed itself.

  • How can i reduce color predominance/dominance?

    Hi
    is there a way to reduce or remove color (or a range of color) predominance/dominance?
    i did a search for a video on youtube , and i didn't find it
    i tried with the eyedropper to select a color , solid color ,blend exclusion but nothing
    thanks
    cheers

    Click on any object that's supposed to be neutral colored, but which is showing a color cast.
    See what sampling that color has done to the Temperature and Tint fields?
    No go try the things you have read here, and you'll see how they can work in your situation.  Nothing says you have to pick perfectly the first time.  Click on things until you like the color you see.

  • Is there a way to change the color of the Commenting indicator?

    Our company is utilizing the commenting feature more now in Adobe Acrobat X Pro.  This is an attempt to reduce printing on paper.  In one of our processes, people will use the comments listed in the Comments Panel to keep track of each note.  They mark each one as complete once they've reviewed whatever the note entails.  The only problem is, as you click each comment from the panel, the comment is indicated on the page.  The indicator that surrounds the comment is a light-blue squiggly line.  It's a bit hard to see, so I was wondering if that color could be changed.  I would prefer to have it as a red squiggly line.
    I see how you can change the comment note colors, but not that indicator line that surrounds the comment.  Is that some sort of system color that needs to be changed in Windows??
    thanks,
    Jon W.

    No,
    you can decrease the brightness level.
    and
    settings>General>accessibility
    Bold Text
    Larger Text
    Increase Contrast
         Reduce Transparency
         Darken Colors
         Reduce White point
    Perhaps some combination of the above will help you.

  • Monitor has weird, pixelated colors, but external monitor looks fine

    I have a MacBook Pro. It is a couple of years old. Recently the monitor started fritzing out. At first it would happen only happen when I ran windows through boot camp. A couple of days later, it began happening in os x too.The screen seems to be operating on a reduced amount of colors, a preponderance of green and everything is pixelated. There are blobby shaped circles of rainbow all over the desktop. Windows on top of the desktop look better, but still way too green and pixelated. All parts of the screen are equally bad. I tried changing all the settings in display. Also ran disc utility. The display on the external monitor looks fine. Any ideas on how I can fix this?

    Some MBP have bad nVidea graphics chips that can do wheat you describe, except it usually affects an external monitor as well. It's covered by a warranty extension program here:

  • Color Range "Local Group"

    Hello together,
    I just wonder what the new feature within the Select: Color Range Dialogue means.
    I'm using the german version, so I don't know how it's named in english, but it should be something like "local colorgroup". It's the only new feature in this dialogue.
    So, what exactly does this feature? i tried for some time but I can't figure.
    As far as I thought in the beginning I can reduce the selected color values a bit more smooth in adition to the tolerance-bar.
    But than, sometimes, after checking the box for this feature, my selection gets twice as big as it was before?
    Can anyone help me out of my misery. :)
    Thanks a lot
    Philip

    From what I can tell, it seems that the function will be more tolerant the closer it is to the click point.
    In other words, it's kinda of like a radial gradient spanning out from the point that you click. It will select more for the area closer to the click point and gradually less as it moves away.
    This may or may not be what it does, this is just what I have found from fooling around with it.

  • Beginner help with splash of color in a black and white photo

    Hi there.  I just perchased the Photoshop Elements 7.  I have a picture of my niece who has beautiful blue eyes and I want to make it black and white and them leave her eyes there beautiful blue??  Can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to do this?  I have search all over and the answers I can across where way to complex for my new beginner knowledge. Also I have another photo of the same niece with  her prom dress on that I would like to leave her eye color alone and dress, but the rest in black and white.   I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.  I am so lost with this program at the moment.  Thank you so much!!

    There are several ways to do it. One way which is really flexible is to add a Hue/Saturation layer over your image. Reduce the Saturation in this dialog to -100 to remove all of the color. Grab your paint brush and set the color to black. With the Hue/Saturation layer selected, paint over the eyes to reveal the color of her eyes.
    A couple of tricks to go with this.
    You can blur the mask to soften/feather the edges after you paint if needed.
    If you need to firm up the edges, use levels on the mask...ctrl L.
    If you want to mix your own black and white effect, you can use the drop down box in the Hue/Saturation dialog box to reduce each individual color channel's Saturation to -100 (instead of the master which effects the overall); then tune your effect by adjusting the individual color's lightness values. You can also adjust Hue values if desired.

  • Reduce File Sizes

    Our HP copier scans to PDF. The resulting file sizes are quite large, since we scan in color. How can I use Acrobat 9 Pro to reduce a 26MB color document to a much smaller file size black and white document without reprinting it to a PDF?

    If your starting point is Color, converting to Grayscale might produce more acceptable results than converting to Black and White.
    To Convert colors, try: Advanced>Preflight>PDF Fixups>Convert to Grayscale
    To reduce the size of a scanned document (either the original color, or bw/grayscale) try Document>Optimize Scanned PDF

  • Strange color temperature when using iSight

    The image generated by my iSight always tends to have a "yellow" tone to it. Can the color temperature be adjusted somewhere? I compared images obtained under the same lighting by colleagues and the color temp with their Macbooks is more blue/white. It is frustrating to always look jaundiced!

    iSight color is set automatically by the app that runs it and is effected by room lighting and even reflections from your monitor, room decor, floor, and wall coverings.
    I can suggest two ways to change the color of your images:
    (1) Use only one color of light in the room, and adjust it by changing lamps if necessary. See Apple's article at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3097
    This single room light color includes reflections from your monitor. I change my System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Desktop to use one of the Solid Gray colors rather than the standard screen color that is installed with Mac OS. The solid, neutral nature of gray greatly reduces the yellow color shift that is automatically applied to correct for a blue or purple desktop. The difference is increasingly notable as room light is reduced.
    Tungsten light is very orange-yellow. If your only light source is tungsten and you are still seeing an image that is too yellow, try changing the lamp bulb to one of the daylight-colored fluorescent replacement lamps. After testing four different brands and colors, I found one that works in my room.
    (2) You can take manual control if you add iGlasses2: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/iglasses/
    You can try before you buy to see if it does what you want.

  • Do I need a new external HD to export the Color files?

    I'm about to color correct the film I edited on FCP using Color. I'm a bit confused about a few issues. The first is that I shot my project using the HVX on P2 cards, then transfered it to my 500g glyph drive. The first question is, when you are done grading the film, does Color create completely new XML / Quicktime files, just like my original source material? Or does it just render the original media on my external hardrive using the color settings? If it DOES create new media, am I looking at a bunch of new quicktime files that will fill up my external hardrive? It's already pretty full. Do I have to invest in a second drive for the color corrected media?
    I also read in the manual that you have to name the new color files the exact same names as your original Quicktime source files so FCP can reconnect the media to your sequence. Obviously I'm nervous about overwriting the original files on my drive, or confusing final cut pro. I know I could just save them in a different folder, but having two files named identical things on the same external drive seems dangerous and confusing. Do I need to daisy chain another drive just for the new color corrected media?
    My final question is, does Color reduce the over all quality of your source media? I've heard that color correction in FCP actually reduces the quality just a bit because it uses a new codec on the render file or something, does COLOR bypass that? Are you getting a downgrade in quality from your source files?
    I'm obviously a bit confused. Someone clue me in here.

    Yeah, you are cornfused and quite honestly, you should really indulge in some training/teaching aides and practice before engaging in a project. But, that's up to you.
    I hope you've read the release notes and for your first project, I'd advise following those notes to the letter.
    Color will render new files and the size of those files is determined by the output codec that you set in your user preferences. If your current drive is almost full, you'll need to get another drive (by the way, rule of thumb for drive capacity is to leave 10% of drives capacity empty) and direct Color to render new files towards that volume.
    YOU will not name the new Color media, it'll be done for you in the Render directory on the new volume provided that direct Color to put those files on your new volume. Color will not overwrite anything, I don't understand where you're getting that information.
    Umm, where did you hear FCP reduces quality of color correction? When you render your Color timeline, you get a choice of output codecs, including the codec of the source material. I don't know where the idea of "downgrading" quality comes from.
    Do yourself a favor and do some testing before you go any where near your finished "film." By the way, your HVX shoots video, not film.
    Good luck.

  • Why is Lightroom significantly altering the color and saturation of my images?

    The past few weeks I have been working on a project that involves some very low key and low saturation images.
    After creating the general mood and tone of the shots in Lightroom. I then export them to photoshop for retouching and final adjustments. I an exporting to photoshop in profoto RGB. The images open in photoshop looking just fine. I complete the work and save them. When I review the saved tiffs in Lightroom they are much much darker than my working file and signifigantly reduced in saturation (almost to grayscale). There is also a signifigant change in the image when moving from develop to library modes. I know there is always a small change, but this is a very noticeble and signifigant one. When I open the file in PS it looks ok. But when I export the file from LR as a jpg it is again washed out, darker and in general wrong.
    This is onl happenign with thes elow saturation color images - All my other images work fine and export as expected, and this workflow has worked well for me for some time. Any thoughts would be apprecaited.

    Here is side-by-side comparison of LR, Saved-back-to-TIF-in-LR, and PS versions that doesn't really show any difference other than the estimated sharpness of the CR2 being too much:
    The LR settings applied to the CR2 are:  Exp -0.5, Cont +50, Clarity +40, Vibrance -60
    I have a calibrated normal-gamut monitor, not a wide-gamut monitor.
    If you can provide your edited TIF file out of PS via copy.com I can test things with your exact adjustments, instead of guessing some reduced exposure and color settings.
    As a comparison of what you're seeing, here is a all-in-one side-by-side of the three images you included, above, where you saved out of PS as sRGB, and in that case, the Library version seems less saturated than the PS and LR-Dev versions which seem similar:
    For each side-by-side screenshot, above, I have opened it in Photoshop, which is untagged, and assigned my monitor profile, then converted to sRGB, so the screenshots, themselves, should look right when viewed using an sRGB colorspace.
