Reduced battery life for high-end MBP 15 2011?
I just bought a new MBP 15" 2011 model (2.2 GHz), an upgrade from my previous MBP 2009 (MacBookPro5,3; Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.66GHz)). I have noticed that the real world battery life is significantly worse than the previous model (3-4 hours vs. 6-7 hours). This doesn't seem due to the actual full charge capacity, since the MBP 2009 still has over 6000 mAh, whereas the new MBP 2011 shows around 7000mAh. Rather, it seems my MBP 2011 draws a lot more power from the battery than the MBP 2009. Could it be that the high-resolution matte screen is the culprit? FYI, the spec of my MBP 2011 is as follows (old specs in the parentheses):
1. 512GB SSD (256GB)
2. 8GB memory (4GB)
3. high resolution matte screen (1680x1050) (glossy standard screen)
If I remember rightly the 2009 units didn't have on the fly graphics switching?

There's a great piece of software that will allow you to control & see which graphics card you're on - I bet if you stick to the integrated graphics you'll see your battery life improve significantly.

I would also note that the 11" and 13" have different lives. While the 11" has a smaller screen to drive (and thus, in theory, less power) it also has less space for a battery. So it turns out the 13" has a longer battery life, all other things being equal (same usage and the like).
Clearly what's "average" will vary by user. Depending on what I'm doing, I can get Apple's rated life (or darned close) or I could end up well short of that life. The "rated" life is 5 hours for the 11" and 7 hours for the 13" but that is, at best, a very rough approximation. As the picture in captfred's response makes clear, the actual usage of the machine has a huge influence. -

I took it in for service and they told me it needed a new logic board and replaced it. When I asked why they were vague about the reasons, they said "it just needed one, it failed some test". I now have the computer back and it runs the same way it always did. I bought this laptop because it was supposedly capable of high end video editing in 1080P (or so Apple's website claims) and also photo editing.

However, when I'm just browsing the web and emailing it runs quite warm and battery life is quite poor. Sometimes doing those same activities I would say it gets so warm it's almost uncomfortable to have on your lap and the fans are running fast enough to become noticably noisy. I'm also driving only one screen at and a time and I heard that the MacBook Pro can supposedly do three screens.
If actually try to do something like video editing with final cut pro the laptop gets really hot, the fans are on full blast and battery life drops to only an hour or two. I think when I rendered just a 3 or 4 minute clip once I got less than hour of battery life. I will have to time again.
Anyway most people (including the sales guys) are telling me no way this is not normal. When I play with demos in the store browsing the web they are not getting warm or hot to the touch. My friend's 2013 MacBook Air is also NOT getting warm to the touch doing the same activities.
I installed iStat Pro so I could check the temperature and fan speeds. I'm seeing temperatures of 70+ on the GPU, 85+ on the GPU diode and 65+ on the CPU heatsink along with elvated fan speeds above 5K which becomes noticeably noisy. I understand that might be normal for the most processor intensive tasks but it really doesn't seem right for just light web browsing and e-mailing. (I also may have viber and skype open but that shouldn't matter). CPU usage is usually running between 2-10% as this is all happening to.
Furthermore, straight from the specs:
Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory and automatic graphics switching
I am assume "GPU" and "GPU diode" are temp measurements on the discrenete NVIDIA video card, especially since MacBook Airs from the same and newer generatio do not have this reading. Since Apple Claims the graphics "automatically switches" it seems all the harder to believe the GPU is reaching 85+ when in theory it shouldn't even be activated. I mean, shouldn't the INtel HD Graphics 4000 be capable of simple web browsing and e-mailing? Especially with only one screen activated (be it it the internal or an external)?
What should I do here? When I asked the repair guys "OK well what is the normal operating temp range for the various sensors" they said "Sorry Apple doesn't provide that info".Yes I have.
Just web browsing and basically doing nothing I'm hear a lot of aduible fans, I'm getting 85C+ on GPU diode, 65+ on cpu heatsink. I since installed anohter program that shows me not just the CPU heatsink but the cores and the cores are at 90C+.
Seems like a lot of heat for doing nothing. Not only that but I have these problems with no external monitor while on battery power too.
I don't know what to do. They already replaced the logic board. Others seem to get advertised battery life out of Apple products and not have products that get **** near hot enough to burn you while just web browsing or watching a movie let alone advertised tasks like Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. -

In a comparison it looks practically identical to the 125W G46-970a. Except the G46 has a sound optical out--the features list says the Gamer board doesn't--and the board pics confirm that. Board looks to have better software than the G46--possibly better sound output, maybe. -

That would be overkill. In earlier versions of Mac OS X, permissions did appear to become correupted quite easily, but no more. Yes, repairing permissions can fix problems once in a while, but it's not something to waste your time doing weekly if there are no symptoms. I am very disappointed with the battery life I am getting out of my Iphone 5S 64G. I charge it every night, and would be lucky to make 15 to 20 minutes of calls during the day and yet I am lucky to get much more than 12 hours of life out of the battery.
I have to make a conscious decision not to use it to avoid it running out on me. I had it back to the Apple Store last week and they ran diagnostic checks on ot and said that the hardware was within specs.
They replaced the software as it was showing that Springboard had crashed on several occasions. The other problem I was complaining about was that at least 2 or 3 times a day, the phone would refuse to wake up when I hit the home button. It would take sometimes up to a minute of pressing the button before anything would light up. The guy at the Apple store said that this was caused by Springboard crashing and that this would also be what is reducing the battery life.
I did notice that after they replaced the software, the waking up problem appeared fixed for a few days, but the battery life had not improved. Now the waking up problem is starting to return.
It is very annoying and somewhat embarrassing when you are with a client and go to make a call and your shiny flashy new Iphone 5 won't even light up. Especially when you have to borrow your clients Nokia....My best bet would be to restore the phone. Back it up to itunes, and then reset it Factory settings. This way, any corrupt software will be removed, and you can start fresh. Make sure you back it up first. By the sounds of it, you are using the phone for business and probably need the data from it. Question about battery life on brand new mbp
I have had my mbp 11 days now, and the battery life seems very short.
I have tiger woods 08 installed
20 minutes of playing and the battery life is down from 100% to 20%.
This seems very short, its not only playing games, the battery life seems to go down very fast when browsing the internet etc.
Cycle count is 8.
Can anyone tell me, is this what i should expect?In particular read the article on calibrating the battery. If you haven't done this, then I suggest you try it first. If problems persist then followup with a call to AppleCare or your local Apple retailer.

What is the expected battery life for a battery in the MacBook Pro (Late 2007)?
I purchased a replacement battery from an Apple Retailer for my son's 17" MacBook Pro (Late 2007) in December 2009. Last week, he gets a "service battery" message and the battery won't hold a charge. Is this the best we can expect in terms of battery life? It was supposed to be an Apple Battery.
Has your son been calibrating the battery per the user manual schedule? Has he been using the computer properly? According to the user manual it states in part:"Do not operate your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your MacBook Pro. Never push objects into the ventilation openings."

Question on workflow for high end inkjet prints from InDesign CS4
Photographs are imaged in Photoshop using Adobe 1998 as a profile. These files are linked in InDesign. My question is how should I output the files from InDesign. I've tried "High Quality Print" saving the files as a PDF then parsing those files with Photoshop as high res files. But the files lack the quality in the original photoshop files.
My system in completely calibrated and I'm quite used to creating output for both offset printing (generally as per vendors instructions) as well us highend digital printing.
Thanks ahead for your comments.You need an ICC profile that defines the destination color space. In this case the high end ink jet.
This will be an RGB profile. You can use a factory profile corresponding to the printer model and paper (this would be part of the printer software install), or you can have a custom profile generated by reading a color target printed on the device. There are online services that can actually create the profile if you send them a print out. Follow their specific instructions if you choose to do this.
Once you have the print device ICC, check the Color Settings in ID. Make sure the RGB policy is "Preserve Embedded". As long as this was the setting at document creation, the image Adobe RGB profiles were honored.
To double check, look in the Links panel. Under ICC you should see Adobe RGB, not Document RGB.
You can also right or control click on an individual image. Go to Graphics: Image Color Settings. By profile it should say Adobe RGB, not Document RGB.
In the print dialog, Color Management, select Document radio button. Color Handling, Let InDesign Handle Colors. Printer Profile, select the Printer ICC. Do a small test print, then check the result to see if it's satisfactory. -

The tips helped me out the most compared to the other links that can be found. Not sure why your battery life isn't lasting you though. You may need to get it checked by Apple. Try the Apple Support--if you got yours new, you have 90 days free support.
Thankfully, I never had issues with the battery life but I did replace my first Macbook a few days after purchasing. Thankfully, I was still within 14 days so had it replaced by Best Buy, no question asks as long as you brought everything including receipts.

I have my screen dimmed since I don't really like it too bright and I have my keyboards lights off unless it's at night and I need to see the keyboard for whatever reason. There is really no real reason for me to have the keyboard lights on anyway other than to make it looks nice. My laptop had lasted me maybe about 7+ hours (maybe even more) if I get it down really low. I've got it down to 10% the first time I used it just to see and then since then, I've been trying to charge from 30%+ and when I am streaming, I keep it plugged in.
I don't ever plan on leaving it plugged in over night or while on sleep mode for a long period of time. Never do a battery calibration since it's not necessary for the new Macbook Retinas.

MBP Battery Troubleshooting: To check for a bad battery, go to Apple/About This Mac/More Info In the System Profiler window, select the Power entry & look for Health Information. If next to Condition it says "Check Battery" then your battery is probably on the fritz.

How do you save battery life
There is many things to help save battery life on IOS, hear are some battery saving tips I use when with low battery .
Battery saver 1: Turn off Bluetooth , by going to "Settings>Bluetooth" and switching the little "On/Off" toggle.
Battery saver 2: Turn down the screen brightness half way or just below is fine, for at home, but if you use your idevice outside turn it up just below max brightness so you can see the screen, to turn up or down brightness you can navigate to "Settings>Wallpaper and Brightness" and there will be a slider to adjust brightness.Or if you are on IOS 7 you can swipe up from the bottom of the screen and it will bring up "Action Centre" and there will be a little sun icon, next to it will be another brightness slider, to exit "Action Centre" press the home button or just swipe the little down arrow.
Battery saver 3: Volume turn the volume up and down at certain times of day "eg: I turn volume up full or just below in the afternoons because most things are going on in the afternoon that probably make lots of noise, and at night turn it down because your ears have adjusted to quietness and can pickup on quieter sounds".
Battery saver 4: Turn off WIFI when not in use "eg when playing games or just switched off" you can do this by going to "Settings>WIFI" there will be a "On/Off" toggle or via "Action Centre" "IOS 7+".
Battery saver 5: When your not going to be using your device for a while shut it down by holding the "Sleep/Wake" button.
Battery saver 6: Close apps running in the background by double tapping the home button and holding down the running apps then tap the little "-" minus in a red circle to close "IOS 6 and lower", things are a little different with IOS 7 its the same process of double tapping the home button but a different way to execute the apps, you do this by swiping "Up" on the open apps. "Tip: You can swipe 3 at once!".
