Reduced graphics card performance when hot

Hello everybody out there,
I hope you can help me with this:
I've got a W500 (4061-BL5) with 8GB RAM and WIn7 64bit. I'm actually using an extreme grahics intensive application (the graphics area get's hot as soon as I'm loading the application). Everything is ok but after some time the graphics performance seems to be reduced due to heat. The application starts to be jerky. The screen starts to freeze for 1-2 seconds and so on. It must have something to do with the performance of the graphics card as this doesn't happen from the beginning (everything is smooth) and the annoying effects start later when you are outside (where it's cooler...don't laugh I tested it serioulsy). The area where the graphic cards sits is extremely hot but the fan is running very moderate.
I already put the graphics performance setting in WIN7 to 'active' but that doesn't help.
- Could it be that the graphics adapter is slowed down due to heat and isn't capable of performing sufficiently?
- Is there a way to speed up the fan (maybe manually) to have a better cooling? I don't care about noise.
- Are there any systems settings I could try to have this effect avoided as it's boring to shut down the TP and wait until it has cooled down and start over.
Thanks for any help and hints......

Hi msigmund
1. The graphic adapter or even other hardware will be slow down and not capable of performing sufficiently when it is hot, just like a human having a fever.
2. TPFanControl and set it to Manual 64

3. Maybe your W500 fan is clogged with dust or thermal paste dried up, you may wish to contact Technical Support for a check / maintenance.
Have a nice day!

  • (bootcamp) graphics card crash when playing games

Firstly apologies if I've put this in the wrong section of the forum... this is the most applicable I could find.
Having tried to enquire at the good folks of AMD, they told me I needed to see apple. Finding a support email is nigh on impossile - so either that or advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated!
I have a boot camp partition on a mid 2011 macbook pro - my graphics card is Radeon HD 6750M.
I have recently been experiencing graphics card crashes when playing games.
There is no boot camp update available, so I am forced to update the driver manually. Trying to use the automated detection/installation tool on the ATI site resulted in the error "your computer doesn't have a proper graphics adapter"
When I located and downloaded the mac bootcamp drivers from the ATI site site, and I tried to install these it was unable to detect my existing microsoft C++ distributable or install its own - so the installation failed.
    All advice welcome!

yeah - it *might* have fixed my issue - or at least it hasn't crashed yet... jynxed it now ofcourse ;p I have acouple of questions though...
Why did this just start happening - I've played other games and this game before without these crashing issues?
I'm worried about configuring this fan thing correctly - lots of 'if your hardware gets damages it's not my problem' warnings on the software site. I know there's only 4 options - how do I ensure I select the right one? ie I thought I had a unibody macbook pro but it can't find the second GPU?

  • MBP with Intel Iris Pro graphic card performance

    Hi Fellow CC
I wanted to know if any of you has experience with the MBP Retina 15" with the Intel Iris Pro graphics card? does it work well with Photoshop, InDesign and some video editing?
    Cheers
    Mica

The NVIDIA card will help and give your MBPro more capabilities. The point is that Ray-traced rendering is not very helpful or useful on probably 95% of your projects. If you want to use that feature it's going to be slow with an NVIDIA card and much slower if you use CPU rendering.
What I'm trying to say is that you should buy the highest performing computer that your budget will allow. If AE is a hobby or your are a student you use one set of parameters to calculate that budget. If you make a living with AE then you use another. If you don't think about your budget and don't do some financial planning regarding your purchases then you probably won't be financially successful in many other areas of your life. The point it - carefully think about what your are going to do with what you buy and make sure the sacrifice you will have to make to purchase your tools is worth the productivity the new tool will bring to your job. Only you know that answer.
You seem to be hung up on Ray-traced rendering. For me that is a very very minor consideration. Performance and capacity is the major part so my laptop is the MBPro R that you see on the right side of the list with all of the upgrades checked. My previous MBProR was nearly the same. I bought it as soon as they were introduced in June of 2012 and sold it to upgrade in July of 2014 when the latest upgrade came out because that is what fit my business plan. The money for the upgrade came from a small portion of my billable time that is funneled into a special account just to keep my tools up to date. Any decision I make to upgrade is based on projections that weigh productivity against cost. You'll have to figure out your own criteria. IMHO Ray-traced rendering is almost not worth considering. The Retina Display and a 15" screen and processor/Ram/Storage capacity and the ability to drive a big external monitor are the major considerations.

  • Low graphic card performance

    Hi, I have envy 14
    i5 2410M, 4gb memory, 750gb 7200rpm hard disk, and AMD Radeon HD 6630M.
    windows 7 64-bit home premium.
I am a 1st person shooter lover and i play cod4 alot. the thing is, i have newly bought this laptop and i am not even able to make the graphic card deliver me 125 FPS in multiplayer online game. I have tried minimising the graphics and resolution of the game to the lowest level, i have tried switching AMD graphics to full performance by catalyst control centre but still, the game runs on 50-60 fps max.
What should i do to increase the graphic card's performance, because this graphic card can perform much better.

    Msalmanali, welcome to the forum.
When requesting help, you should always include the make/model of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them.
This is a problem that is not easily solved, if at all.  The fact is, laptops simply aren't meant for gaming.  Therefore, the mobile video cards are developed accordingly.  If lowering the settings hasn't helped, there is nothing that can be done except to add a video card if possible.

  • Discrete graphics card performance drop after overheating

Recently I played Amnesia: The Dark Descent on my pc while overclocking slightly using Sapphire TRIXX. I changed GPU clock from 750 to 84x and memory clock from 900 to 10xx. During a cinematic the com crashed, ctrl at del failed to load up but sound was still coming out. I left it like this for2-5 min before force shutdown. When I turned on my laptop again n tried to play games there was a huge performance drop. Games running at 60 fps turned to 20 plus when using dedicated graphics card only ( I disabled dynamic mode n used fixed mode while playing amnesia also, which means I was purely using the dedicated graphics card.)
My laptop is a hp dm4 3005tx Beats edition, with Intel I5 2.5GHz processor and 8.00 gig ram. I also disabled paging file on my laptop btw, regretting this .
can some1 tell me hw to fix.this problem or can I replace my discrete graphics card? Because my laptop has Radeon hd 7470m and Intel hd graphics

The graphics card is soldered on so no replacement. I would do a wipe and reload of the OS and stop overclocking laptop video cards. They are too sensitive to heat and other issues. You are asking for trouble, and may have already found it. At a minimum run DriverCleaner and remove the video driver until you get back to a low-res screen generic vga hardware and then reinstall the best driver you can find.

  • Graphics Card Crashes When I Open Final Cut X

Never happend before, i started a project for a timelapse video and loaded about 3000 photos into final cut, loaded them to the timeline and 10 seconds later my whole computer restarted. I tryed opening again, right when my project opens, my computer restarts again.
I have the imac 27" mid 2011, everything updated, i have 16gb ram with about 600gb free harddrive space.
I know its my graphics card causing the problem for sure knowing by using Pro Maintenance tools. Im using Final Cut X (10.0.6).
What do i do, im stressting out!!!!!

If you're certain it is the graphic card then you're only recourse is to have it repaired by Apple or an Authorized shop.
If you're near an Apple Store then that wil be the quickest solution.

  • MBP vs iMac graphic card performance

I perform heavy image and video editing on my Windows XP machine....my imac G4 is used by wife for email and browsing but can't use for my purposes....would like to get a new machine....portability is not a major concern but performance is.

If you already have a good display with your WinXP box why not look at the Mac Pro? The Quad 2.8GHz MacPro is the same price as the Dual 2.8GHz iMac and for a little more you can have the superior graphics card.

  • Satellite A500 Issues (graphics Card freezes when Gaming)

Hi Everyone hoping you can help!!
I recently purchased my Satellite A500 Laptop and I have 2 extremley bad issues!!!
Firstly apparently my model number doesnt exist it is PSAM3A-04100E which is proving to be a right royal pain in the preverbial when it comes to upgrading to windows 7!
    Secondly is my major issue,
I do a lot of gaming (sims 3, Callof Duty that sort of thing...) and whenever I am playing I think wow this is great excellent fps great graphics and then FREEZE!!! my computer completley locks up and shuts down, no warning signs of lagging slowing down or anything and it does it constantly!!!
I was wondering if anyone else is suffering from this problem or whether I look should look for a driver update I have searched around but cant seem to find it anywhere.
I dont really want to take it back to the shop because then I wont have a compuer for weeks!
Any help would be massively appreciated,
    Many thanks
    Tasman

    >PSAM3A-04100E
Where you bought your notebook? What is the country of purchase?
    New Zealand maybe?
Please visit http://www.toshiba.com.au/ > New Zealand and you should find your notebook model there but as I can see Win7 drivers are not available at the moment.
Next week I will get my Satellite A500 and I will test it with Call of Duty 4 and let you know how it works.
Anyway before you start the game stop all useless running processes and set power plan to full power. Be also sure your notebook can take a breath and cooling fans are not blocked somehow. Put also back side of your notebook on two CD boxes to have higher distance between notebook and the desk.
I hope everything will works well.

  • K8NGM2-FID external graphics card performance

    Hello
I read on http://www.digital-daily.com/motherboard/msi-k8ngm2-fid/index06.htm that the performance using an external video card with the K8NGM2-FID is inferior to other boards.
    Is this true?
    Best regards
    Andreas

I would look at another site since they are stating "BOTH" boards they have tested with the 6150 chipset have performance issues.
They have only tested two 6150 chipset boards, the others they are comparing it to are the 6100 chipset boards.
It may have nothing to do with MSI.

  • Graphics cards running hot

    Hi
I have two Sapphire Radeon 6870 graphics cards which use the open source xf86-video-ati drivers. The problem is that they run extremely hot! When running nothing but a simple openbox session, the first idles at 68 degrees C and the second at 64 degrees C, whereas in windows, they each idle at around 35-40 degrees.
I did a bit of research, and one persons blog said that the open source drivers are not as good at regulating the temperature as the proprietary drivers. However, I use the virtual console a lot (I am trying to learn how to use it) and need the KMS abilities that the open source drivers provide. I hate the appalling TTY resolution of the proprietary drivers, so I pretty much need to stick with the open source drivers unless someone can help me with the proprietary drivers and their resolution problems.
My question is whether or not anyone else has noticed that their graphics cards run very hot with the open source ati drivers, and whether there is a way to fix it.
EDIT: Yes, there is substantial airflow between the two cards. Just to be sure, I took one out, and the remaining idled at 63 degrees C according to lm_sensors
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for those two posts.
I tried installing the catalyst drivers, however I had issues with dbus-launch and the scaling:
In windows, with the catalyst driver, in the catalyst control center there is a setting for scaling, in which there is a slider that goes between underscan and overscan. It adjusts how big the image appears on the screen. Black borders appear between the edge of the image and the edge of the actual monitor. In X, i can adjust that, however in the TTY, i can't adjust that.
I am trying to avoid the catalyst drivers so that there is no issues with the scaling in the virtual consoles. Does anyone know a way of changing the scaling amount?
    Thanks

  • Why can I not see Nvidia graphics card when i click "more info" on my 15 inch macbook pro?

I've just purchased a mid 2012 macbook pro
its supposed to have an Nvidia graphics card, but when i click "about this mac" --> "more info" i only see Intel HD 4000 graphics card. Is this ok? Does this mean that somebody opened my macbook and stole the card :- /

Nope - it's likely just the card in use at the time when you do the More Info...
...to check to see if the card is 'there' hold down the option key and select System Information from the Apple menu. Go under Hardware>Graphics & Displays and two cards should be listed.
    Good luck,

  • PCI-E graphics card and system memory conflict.

    Hello,
I have a bit of a strange problem with my new system build.
All my parts work fine when used by them selves.
    MSI KN8 diamond.
    Athlon 3200 64bit 939 Winchester.
    Crucial Ballistix PC4000 memory.
    Inno3D 6800GT PCI-E
    Thermaltake purepower 680W.
The problem arises when I try and use both the memory and graphics card card at the same time, the system does not post stating a memory problem.  I know both work as I’m able to post when either is removed i.e when running with a standard PCI graphics card or when the memory is swapped. I’ve checked out a lot of forums over the last 2 weeks and I know there are a lot of people out there running with the same memory.  I’ve tried under clocking the memory with no success. Can anyone shed any light on this problem as I’ve never had a conflict between a graphics card and memory before.
    Thanks John

Need to make a couple of changes as there appears to be a possible issue with the loading of the Optimized Default setting in the bios, and I quote from MSI:
     Quote
After loading the Optimized Default, the memory setting values will be optimized to achieve better performance. It is, however, likely to cause problems of compatibility.
Which seems to be the exact issue you are experiencing.  First thing I would do is to manually set your vdimm to 2.8v in the bios.  This will make sure that your memory is getting the correct voltages as the AUTO setting usually sets memory to 2.5v.  This alone could eliminate your problem, but I think you'll have to comb through your memory timings and reset them, (Crucial lists 2.5-4-4-8 @ DDR500 speeds, so I'd try 2-3-3-6 or 2.5-3-3-6 for DDR400 speeds).
There is also an official bios 1.1 for your board, and a beta (5.01) from the Diamond Club.  I'd stay with the official releases for the time being (until you get your board up and running properly).

  • Bug in screensaver OR graphic card? Help me figure this out

I have a 15" MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz purchased in late September 2009. There is an odd bug that shows up in the mosaic screensaver (the one that represents one of your iPhoto pictures using a mosaic of your other photos) when I use the "Better Graphics" settings. If you have a similar computer, see if you can replicate this bug and let me know I'm not crazy...
This 10.6 standard screensaver shows a single picture, then zooms out to show that picture as part of a mosaic that represents one of your other pictures in iPhoto. When the photo mosaic is complete, it gradually dissolves into the actual photo, then repeats the process using that photo as part of a mosaic.
This screensaver works perfectly when running on the default NVIDIA GeoForce 9400M graphics card. When I switch to "Higher Performance" graphics and use the NVIDIA GeoForce 9600M GT card, the final image before the dissolve flips upside down, then dissolves into a right-side-up version of the image and starts the mosaic process again. Very odd!
I have noticed no other issues on my computer when using "Higher Performance" graphics, but this one is weird and disturbing because it is in an Apple screensaver. Any thoughts or experiences with this?

Thanks for the suggestion - after someone else reproduced the problem on their MacBook Pro, I submitted a bug report. It's not a big deal, but this should probably be fixed.

I use windows7 64bit,  bios is 1.15-1.06 version and the graphics card driver is NVIDIA display driver 8.16.11.8898 version.
Does anyone know this problem? I want to know it is a driver problem or a hardware problem.
    Thanks for help me.

Nvidia video chips run very hot, the only thing I can recommend is using tpfancontrol and setting the fan higher.

  • Can I change my Macbook Air's Graphics card?

Hello, I'm having a problem with my Macbook Air's graphics card. When i open After Effects CC, it says that i need an approved NVIDIA Graphics. That in other means, should I change my Macbook Air's graphics card? Even some programs requires me an NVidia Graphics or ATI graphics to render the media. This annoys me a lot as i can't render the media out the software!
So, is there any possible way i can customise my Macbook Air's Graphics by changing it or some sort?
Service it? Pay it? Ask the iBox store? Dismantle it myself? Please help!!
    Product: Macbook Air (128 GB)
    Operating System: OSX Mavericks 10.9.4
Processor: 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5
Graphics: Intel HD 5000                    -----------> Needs to be changed!!!
    Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Thanks afterwards!   =D

    Hi.
Macbook Airs only handle integrated graphics card, and there is no slot on the Motherboard to add one. If you want a discrete graphics card, to use with professional software, you need to go towards an iMac, Mac Pro or 15 inch Macbook Pro Retina. If you do not want to buy a new machine, you could get an older second hand Macbook Pro with a discrete graphics card.
The Macbook air isn't built to use this kind of software.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    James
