Reduced Message App Functions

So Mavericks reduced some of the Messages app functionality. Specifically, notifcations if my name is used in a chatroom or with direct messages. Now it simply reads "play sound effect when message is recieved." In a large chat room with many participants its worthless to have that setting enabled as I would hear it trigger constantly.
I would love to get Messages back the way it was in 10.8 so that I get audio alert if my name is used and if I recieve a direct IM. I'm unfamiliar with Appplescripts or if they could help this situation, so I'm looking for advice.
Also, I did submit my feedback to apple's feedback page so I'm really just looking for solutions/clarifications at this point.
Thank you!

Hi,
Some info.
Yes Apple removed the Alerts preference pane in Messages 8.
They have only left the change for Messages Received in the General Section.
However if you go to the Applications Folder and Right click the app and then Select Show Package Contents and look in Resources you will find all the Sounds are still there.
The Messages Received Sound is now held in com.apple.messageshelper.AlertsController.plist
This is in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.soagent/Data/Library/Preferences
It overrides all the sounds you may have previously set that are held in com.apple.ichat.plist (in ~/Library/Preferences)
It seems a majority of default sounds still play such as the ringer for AV invites and the File Transfer Sounds
It also seem you can't turn these Off. (or any of the optional ones ON).
You also cannot set sounds against specific actions of Buddies.
There are some Scripts that the app can access.
These are in ~/Library/Application Scripts/com.apple.iChat
The Auto Accept actually works for Audio Only, Video as well as Text invites (I am not sure that Texts are not Auto Accepted now anyway - I don't remember seeing an Invite fro a while).
I am pretty sure it does not distinguish between regular Chats and AIM's Direct IMs
If you compare this section
using terms from application "Messages"
on received text invitation theText from theBuddy for theChat
        accept theChat
    end received text invitation
end using terms from
with the similar one in the Speak Events one you will realise that the bit that currently reads "accept theChat" can be changed to something else.
This site may be of  use looking at other Scripts  (mainly for use with iTunes).
This Search may also help.

  • Messages app - how to disable on another computer

I logged in temporarily on another computer, not related to my home office.
When I log into my Mac from home, I get a message that "computer xyz" (computer where I was working over the last week) was associated to my Messages account.
Is there any way to turn off or disable the Messages app functionality on that system - remotely ?
I won't be back at that location for some time. I can't be 100% sure the computer is being used by anybody, as this may just be a delayed message.

    Hi,
At this point you need remote access to that computer.
There is no Self help to De-register a Mac like there is for an iPhone https://selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage
Accessing the computer and opening the Messages app to delete the Apple ID is only part of the issue.
You can Sign Out  but this leaves the .plists that holds your accounts Info and alternatives still readable in the ~/Library/Preferences
It also leaves the  Keychain items for the IDS: yourAppleID-Auth Token in place.
Ideally it might pay to delete the whole ~/Library/Preferences.
If you think that this may be too deep  then remove all the com.apple.iChat.*.plist items
    Anything with iMessages in it.
Plus com.apple.imagent.plist and anything with IDS  in the name  (most importantly the one with madrid in the name).
Do the same with the Keychain.  (Any item with IDS in the name)
Deleting your name from the iMessages account in the app does not remove it from the .plist
Nor does it remove your alternatives that are likely to include your iPhone number.
It would be worth deleting the contents of ~/Library/Messages as these database items hold the iMessages chat history.
    Saved chats are in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages/Archive

  • Messages App Greyed-Out and Non-functional

I recently installed Yosemite on my (June 2013) Macbook Air and my messages app has just become an exercise in mind-numbing frustration.
    Issue:
When I get texts, I get the pop-up notification in the top-right of my Mac with the texter's name and a preview of their message, but when I click on the notifications.. they disappear and nothing happens. Sometimes it'll pull up the messages app, but no matter how many times I restart it, the app is just a grey window that says "No Conversation Selected"-- or sometimes, it doesn't even say that. It's just a blank grey screen. And all (useful) preferences and options in the menu (apart from "about" and "close messages") are greyed-out, and the app itself doesn't show any conversations.
Worst part being that I can't seem to find many people with the same issue, and thus I've Googled myself out to no avail.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi,
Check the Font AppleGothic.ttf is active and validates using the Font Book app.
if you have to change anything restart the Mac.
If this is not the issue go to ~/Library/Preferences and find com.apple.ichat.plist and Drag it to the Trash and then restart Messages.
The above reply in another thread solved my issue! Namely that my apple gothic font was disabled, breaking the entire Messages app.

  • How can I stop iOS from opening a recently received message when I click on the messages app to compose an unrelated message to a different contact? I want to read it later, when I have time to reply, and I don't want to forget to go back to it.

iPhone messages automatically open when I don't want them to
One of my first ever flip phones had a wonderful function where you could choose a checkbox next to received messages to make them appear read or unread. This was very convenient for messages which you read, but don't have time to reply to immediately, and want to remember to come back to later.
In contrast, the latest, greatest iPhone not only does not have this rudimentary message management function, but it goes one step further in the wrong direction. If there is just one received, unread message, and you click on the messages icon, the new message will automatically be opened. It is opened irrespective of whether you have time to read it right away, irrespective of if you simply wanted to compose a new message or go back to another already read message. It just opens the new one, and then you are in a position where you have to read it and respond to it right there, or risk forgetting about it and failing to reply to it altogether. I sometimes receive a lot of messages over a period of a few hours, so it is very easy to lose track of these half-read messages in the mayhem. I have missed countless messages because of this problem. Incidentally, if there is more than one received message, then the application doesn't automatically open any of them, which is much better, because you can at least choose when you want to open one of the unread messages. But ideally, you should be able to go through your list of received messages and check or uncheck them as read or unread at any time, so that you can easily find messages that still need to be replied to, or reconsidered.
Does anybody have a solution to this problem? It strikes me as a simple data management solution that should be, but is not an option in the basic functionality of the app. Frustrating!

    Is this an IMAP account?
If so, delete the messages in Mail from all folders and quit Mail.
Go the the website and clear the messages from all folders there.
Reopen Mail and verify the messages have been deleted for all folders.

  • What happened to the images in the desktop Messages app?

Before Mavericks, images received via the messages app would appear in the Messages application window.  In Mavericks, however, the images are replaced by a generic JPEG icon.  In order to view the images, you have to click attorney magnifying glass to download them or select the individual message and invoke quicklook using the Spacebar.  Neither of these are convenient.  I've looked through the application preferences and the Window and View menu drop-downs hoping to find a toggle to return to the old method, but found nothing.
Does anyone know of a way to revert back so that images are visible in the Messages window as they were previous to Mavericks?

    Hi,
    Works for me.
Messages sent 2100 (BST) and Screen Grabbed in the same minute.
    Posted here soon after that.
However closing a  Chat/Conversation and reopening it does seem to reduce the file to a link to the File Transfer window.

  • IPhone iOS 8: Tapping on photo icon in messages app causes app to crash

Issue (?ios 8 bug?): Tapping on photo icon in messages app causes app to crash. Present in ios 8.0, and also still in ios 8.0.2. iPhone 6+ 64GB.
I just wondered if anyone else has been having this problem.
Initially it worked great. Tapping the photo button next to the text box in message should bring up a menu with your latest photos and other sharing options. However, after the first couple of days, tapping the button brought up the menu, the phone freezes, and then after a few seconds the photo app crashes.
Deleting most of my photos restored the function, but after another couple of days (and some more photos) it started happening again so I think perhaps it is related to the number of photos. After about 5-10 photos it loads the menu very slowly and its quite buggy. After 20+ photos it wont load the menu at all without freezing and the app crashing.
My iphone 6+ was set up as a new phone (not restored from back-up).
I hope this is some kind of bug that will be fixed in ios 8.0.3, but wondered if anyone else has the same problem or has any solutions?
My workaround at the moment is just to go the photos app and either copy and paste the photo into a message, or share the photo via the photos app.

I have this same issue with my 128 gb 6 plus.  I've tried restoring as new on a few occasions, but to no avail.  I did notice while my pc was synchronizing my apps, that the feature worked fine a few times until the synchronization was complete.  I seriously hope that the numbers of photos limits one's use of the feature, because i purchased the 128 gb 6 plus so that i could keep photos at my ready.
Has anyone heard of a solution yet?

  • ICloud account no longer working in Messages app

About 2 weeks ago, my iCloud account has stopped working in the Messages app (version 7.0.1) on my laptop (MacBook Pro 2011, running the latest Mountain Lion update, 10.8.5). Only this app seems to be affected -- Mail is functioning fine, as is Notes and Calendar. My iPhone and iPod touch also aren't affected.
I was texting one of my friends while multitasking (I think I was working on a story I'm writing) when I realized that I was no longer receiving my text notifications on my computer. Initially I thought it just had logged out or something. I opened messages and tried to log back in to my icloud account, but I got the error message "Could not sign in to iMessage. The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later." I tried multiple times that day, and have multiple times since, but still no luck. Finally a day or two ago I thought maybe I just needed to deactivate iCloud on my laptop completely, and then reactivate it. So I tried that, but still I'm getting the error message.
Incidentally, I have AIM enabled on Messages, too, but that account seems to be functioning - it's logged in and messages can be sent/received. Only my iCloud account seems to be failing.
I don't have any outstanding updates in the App Store, and in the meantime I'm able to iMessage friends just fine from my phone, but I kinda miss being able to easily switch apps and type, while I've got my laptop open. Any ideas what the issue might be?

Try posting this question over in the OS X Mountain Lion forum.  iMessage is not part of iCloud.

  • What's the difference between segment filtering and reduced message type

    Hi gurus,
What's the difference between segment filtering and reduced message type? It seems they have the same functionality: Reduce the segment while idoc is generated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    BD53 is for IDoc Reduction.
this allows you to create a reduced message based upon a standard message type.If you want see mandatory fields. go to T-coe BD53 and give one standard messege type name and eg: matmas
there mandatory fields will be in Green color..
And BD56- This transaction is used to filter out segments of IDocs for combination of sender and receiver. This is usefull in scenarios where a standard IDoc with many segments is used but the receiving partner is only interested in some of the segments
the table related to this transation is TBD20
please go through below blog you have an idea abt that,

  • My text messaging app is not working PLEASE HELP!!!

My text messaging app is not working at all is a blank screen when I open it! Help!!!

No its a well known bug with iphones caused by their over complication of things and their complacency that their users will buy the phones on looks alone irrespective of its basic functionality.
Suggestion 1 - The most common suggested solution seems to be: iMessage needs switched off on all your devices and switched back on after a rest. I found that this did NOT work.
Suggestion 2 - Having a Wi Fi Signal seems to confuse iMessage to send an SMS as a text or as an iMessage. Turn off WiFi on your phone and manually send as text message. Slow, I lnow!!
Suggestion 3 - Move away from any wifi source ie out of range.
Suggestion 4 - Send an email, or a letter. Its more personal!!
20 Minutes later - still not sent 2 short texts.
Apple are very complacent and disdainful of their user community. Not what Id expect but this is a global corporation with the same business ethics as an Oil company or a car company. Profit not function.

  • Messages app crashes on iPhone 6 plus when trying to send a picture from my library

As soon as I select the camera icon to send a picture in Messages it crashes on my iPhone 6 plus running IOS 8.0.2. It happens every single time. I have restarted the phone several times. I can go to my photo library, choose a photo and send it as a message and that works. I checked the diagnostic information but can't decipher it. Any ideas?

I had the VERY same problem with a iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.0.2. I did a hard reset and a full restore to factory settings and then a restore from a back up- nothing worked. I then read Cal4one's post on turning off the read text function (which I had just turned on days before to try out) and ta-da! all is well! I can now use Messages and when I go to attach a picture, the Photo library comes up quickly (it was not before the chance) and the Message app no longer crashes. Just to be safe, I turned off all reading functions in the Accessibility (settings/general/accessibility/speech) settings.

  • Multiple message deletion functionality disappears

My iPhones 5S with iOS 8.1 loses multiple message deletion functionality. I tap a message in communication thread, chose more options, mark messages to be deleted and push waste bin. When used a few times the waste bin is replaced with camera options and deleting multiple messages is not possible; see screenshot. In order to re-establish the functionality, I have to close the message app down and restart it. Are there any solutions or work around to this?

    Hi Kare Gronholt,
If you are having issues with your iPhone's ability to delete multiple messages, you may want to try some things to troubleshoot.
First, quit all running applications and test again -
OS: Force an app to close
Next, I would try restarting the iPhone -
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
If the issue is still present, you may want to restore the iPhone as a new device -
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Messages app not working

I was able to install Mountain Lion on my Mac with no issues. I have a mid 2010 macbook pro running an i5. When I launched the Messages app, all my accounts where loaded in there. The issue that I am having is that my iMessages account will not show me on line, even though the account has been enabled for use. None of my conversations that I am having on my iPhone will load automatically or show in the Messages app. I have checked to make sure that the iCloud account on my phone and the iCloud account on my mac are the same. My calendar and reminders sync just fine between the two. I have spent over a hour with apple care support and they cant figure out why its not working. Any body out here have any idea? I have tried a fresh install twice of the OS. The accounts are all entered and logged in correctly. I was able to send one message from the Messages app that went through to someone and showed on their phone that the message was sent from my email. The rest of the coversation did not carry over.
    Some additional information:
When I click the messages menu and scroll down to accounts, iMessage is checked.
When I click on the status menu, every thing is in light gray and its showing off line, and I cannot change the status.
On the bottom of the messages app interface, it is showing my yahoo account as on line, my iMessage account is not listed there.
My internet connection is working fine and so are all other OS functions and iCloud features.

When I was using the beta message app (which was downloadable for a limited time from apple then) in OS X lion, there seemed to be no problem receiving imessages on mac from an iphone either directing them to my iphone number or my apple ID email address.
Now with mountain lion, mac message app can only recieve imessage at apple ID email address. I think apple have deliberately made this change in order not to confuse users as in the Preferences of message it says:
The same gose true on an iPad (wifi only model). Personally I think it would be great if apple adds an option in Mac enabling it to be reachable at cell phone number. Hope this might be helpful to you.

  • I sure hope that the new imessenger doesn't look like the text messaging app, that would be a huge flop for apple. It has to look and feel like bbm or it will just suck.

I sure hope that the new imessenger doesn't look like the current text messaging app, that would be a huge flop. I think I should look and feel like the bbm to make any kind of significant impact. Am I wrong?

"iMessage in iOS 5 brings the functionality of iPhone messaging to all of your iOS devices―iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Built right into the Messages app, iMessage allows you to easily send text messages, photos, videos or contact information to a person or a group on other iOS 5 devices over Wi-Fi or 3G. iMessages are automatically pushed to all your iOS 5 devices, making it easy to maintain one conversation across your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. iMessage also features delivery and read receipts, typing indication and secure end-to-end encryption."
That is from the Apple site. If all your friends have an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad you cang share with your friends, with is exactly like BlackBerry Messenger (BBM only works on BBs).
And it does look just like the current message format. You can also find that at www.Apple.com
