Reducing colors in photoshop? (making many colours fewer)

Hi! I've been working on some pictures that will be printed on T-shirts. The problem is that I've got alot of different color in the pictures which would result in a very expensive print. What I would want to be able to do is to reduce the colors in the pictures to only 4 specific colors (plus black and white). The colors must be very specific. for an example:  "ff2600".
To be totally clear: I need the ALL the different types of yellow into be transformed to just one type of yellow.
So my question is am I able to do something like this in photoshop?
I'd be very grateful for some answers!
Thank you!
// Hannes

Posterize would not work, since it acts on each color channel independantly. You wouldn't have to save as a GIF, though. Just change the mode to Indexed Color.
Use the "Custom" palette, with Colors set to 6 (your four inks plus black and white), and "Forced" set to "Black and White". You can edit your palette as desired, and save it for later use. It can be tricky to get the image to look natural doing this, though; you may be better off starting with something like "Local Perceptual", and then switching to Custom to tweak it.
Once you have the image looking the way you want, you can use the Magic Wand to select each of the colors, create new channels, and fill the selected area in them with black. You can then use these alpha channels to make your screens.

  • HSB Color Space Question - How Many Colors Are There In Photoshop

Hello guys, I have a sort of basic question that I have been trying to figure out for a few days.
I am trying to find out how many colors there are in the Color Picker  when the Hue radio button is selected.
I know there are 256^3 RGB (#Hex) colors, and I am trying to find some relationship when I am coloring with HSB color space in Photoshop.
It just confuses me because the Hue slider goes from 0-359 and the S and B goes from 0-99...
So how many HSB colors in Photoshop are there?  Am I missing out on some colors by using HSB color space in Photoshop as oposed to using RGB?
Are there the exact same amount?  Are there more and there are duplicates in HSB space mode?
Thank you all for all your help, much appreciated

The deficiency of such mathematical models is that they do not take into account noise and human perception. In an 24 bit RGB space (8 bits per channel) there may be 16 million colors, but this assumes that there are 256 discrete levels in each color channel. You could increase the number of colors by using a 48 bit space. In practice, noise will reduce the number of discrete levels, and this will vary with the camera and ISO used in that camera. For example, consider the Nikon D5000 as evaluated by DXO. At  base ISO the camera can resolve only 21.8 bits of color information and this decreases to 15.6 bits at an effective ISO of 2079 (camera ISO setting of 3200).
    http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng/Image-Quality-Database/Nikon/D5000
Then you have to consider how many of these colors can actually be differentiated by the human visual system. If you can't see a difference, it really doesn't matter. These differences are difficult to quantitate. One such effort uses MacAdam ellipses shown in this Wikipedia article on a CIE 1931 xy plot. How many of these ellipses are contained in the CIE xy space? The DXO site has similar ellipses for real world camera images.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacAdam_ellipse
See this RIT FAQ for a more sober real world analysis. The actual number of colors is in the millions, but likely not 16 million.
    http://www.cis.rit.edu/mcsl/outreach/faq.php?catnum=1#219
In a real world situation, I would not be overly concerned about differences between the RGB and HSB spaces, but one could increase precision by using a 48 bit space.

  • Windows Vista Photo Gallery displays incorrect colors? Photoshop?

    Hi all
I have two PC's running Windows Vista that I work with and both have photoshop CS3 installed, but for what ever reason on one of the PC's the Windows Photo Gallery application displays really desaturated colors when views jpg's and the like (the other PC's displays them fine).
I've googled and haven't yet found out a quality solution, lots of info on simply combining and replacing drivers and the like and nothing really set in stone from Adobe, or Microsoft etc
    Any help would be great

Are both your monitors hardware calibrated? Is Windows Photo Gallery a fully colour managed application?
If the answer to one or both questions is no then you cannot expect similar results.
If the monitors are calibrated and Photoshop has identical colour settings then the images should appear similar on each computer.

  • Mackbook pro 2012 in closed-clamshell bugs periodically, reducing color bitrate on the external eizo screen! But, if I let im open, that bug never happens!

    Hi everybody.
When I'm working on my MacBook Pro mid 2012, with Mavericks OS 10.9.5, in a closed-clamshell setup, I got color rendition bugs all the time. Those bugs reduce the color bit rate, making it impossible to work! But, if I'm using it almost closed with the luminosity dimmed to of, everything runs fine, all the time!
    Somebody have suggestions?
(I'm connected via thunderbolt port, with a Thunderbolt---->DVi converter.
    Thank you.

    Hi Bruno Inácio,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that while connected to an external monitor, with a closed MacBook lid, the display on your external monitor has random color anomalies. In this situation, I would recommend checking your connections, resetting the system, and resetting the resolution. These steps can be found in the attached article.

  • Reducing colors on a jpg photo

Just curious to know if I can  reduce colors in a photo (jpg), then to change it to a vector drawing in Elements.  I have a new embroidery machine and I would love to digitize some of my photos into embroidery patterns.  The embroidery software I have will change vector art into a stitch pattern that the embroidery machine can read.
I am new to Elements, previously had been using Paint Shop Pro for photo edits.
If this can be done is there a tutorial I can watch?
    Thanks,
    Sheila

You might ask the person what method they used in photoshop to reduce the colors and there's probably a good chance you can do the same in elements.
As far a vectors your much better off using an application such as illustrator and there are several free vector programs such as Inkscape and Microsoft

  • Suddenly unable to print in color from photoshop

Just put in new print cartridges (both b&w and color) in my HP officejet printer and I suddenly can't print color from photoshop. I'm using a mac os x 10.8.
I seem to be able to print color from other sources such as directly from the internet, or from preview. When I go to Print in photoshop  if I try to select Color Matching ColorSynch and Vendor Matching are greyed out and unselectable. Not that I ever had to go there before but that seems to be the only difference between the print dialog boxes in photoshop and the other sources.

You should contact Microsoft for Mac Support  and/or post in their forums.

Sending photos from Lightroom to Photoshop - covered with colours? Opening from Bridge they are fine.  Does anyone know how to set up the monitor from advanced to basic?  Someone said that might be the issue but I can't find any area in control panel where it has the option?

You need to supply more information and screen shots of the problem would also be useful.

  • Colors in Photoshop all wrong but OK in other apps. (For example "Whites appear yellow.")

Q: The colors in Photoshop are all wrong. They have a neon look or are discolored with a blue, red, green or Yellow cast. I look at the same pictures in other applications and they look just fine. How do I fix this?
A: Recalibrate your monitor using Adobe Gamma (OS9) or the Displays Control in System Preferences (OSX). Photoshop uses your monitor profile to display your images other apps don't. Be sure you start the recalibration using a fresh monitor profile (sRGB or the profile that came with your monitor for example). If you try to recalibrate using the old corrupt profile you will still have a corrupt monitor profile and your color will still be bad. Also, if you are using OS 9 make sure you are using ColorSync 3.0.4. The 3.0.4 patch is available on the Apple web site.
See also support document 319456, "Colors Are Incorrect (For example White Appears Yellow)" at http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/319456.html. The document is for Windows, but it may be useful for Macintosh.

Thanks. But it looks like in all my frustration, I wasn't  sure  my original call for help had posted, so must have  submitted the same question again.
But I just had a new thought on the problem. While reviewing a story I received from another website,  I noticed that the photos attached to the article  looked  a lot like  what I described  in my  message. It made me wonder if I have a software problem at all . . . or if it's the screen on my Mac that needs recalibration!
It only took 2 minutes to find a website that discussed it — with sample screens to help determine if that was what I'm dealing with. Since a screen supposedly showing a mix of numbered, grey boxes looked totally white to me and I could only see the white numbers on a screen that supposedly contained boxes in varying shades of black, I think I might be on the right track. Just not sure, since I had to reach the bottom of the page before spotting the pitch for a product that supposedly will recalibrate  for me. I'm not sure I want to tackle recalibration on my own, but may call the Mac Geniuses at our local mall  and see  if my hunch is right . . .and if so, what they would charge to do it for me.
BTW, if it sounds like a calibration problem, do you think moving my computer  from one desk top another (just 5 feet away) could have caused it? I'm not sure, since it wasn't on my mind at the time, but I think that's roughly when I first started to notice discrepancies in color.

  • Question on scanned images and coloring in Photoshop

I have some sketches from my drawing class that I would like to scan and color in Photoshop. I scan the sketch
but I can't add color. I've tried 'lassoing' a portion of the drawing
but the paint bucket still won't add color.
What am I doing wrong? Please help.
    thanks.

The Paint Bucket tool may be the wrong tool, or at least you may have its Threshold set to a low value, as it replaces pixels only of a similar color to the one you click on.
It may be more direct to just select the Brush tool and set up a large brush to paint solid color in the region you selected.
If you want to get into more advanced functionality, which will allow you to correct mistakes or continue to adjust your colorizing for example, perhaps you will want to create a new layer and paint on that layer.  Without knowing your goals it's hard to advise further, but you might also want to learn more about Layer blending mode "Color" vs. "Normal".
