Reducing File Size by reducing the amount of embedded fonts

Currently we use coldfusion to generate a rather large PDF. We take the data and merge it with pdf forms and then combine all the forms into one large PDF. The end product of the PDF is rather large in size, when i do and audit of the space usage i notice that 89.40% is fonts which relates to almost 92.9 mbs. Is there a way i can strip some of these fonts either using coldfusion or adobe acrobat pro, and still maintain the integrity of the PDF?

It may be you can subset the fonts and not include the full fonts in the file. You might also consider replacing some of the fonts with others to reduce the total number. Removing the fonts is dangerous as the PDF may not display properly in such a case. There are some preflight macros that deal with fonts that might help -- worth looking at.

  • Reducing file size by changing the photo size?

I inherited a bloated pages file with some photos over sampled at 14Mb+ Probably should be about 500k.
I want to open the file's package contents and edit the images using graphic converter. So far my attempts have resulted in the physical size reducing on the page. Anyone with a tip to reduce the resolution of the photo with out the result shrinking on my layout?
    thanks

Well to answer my own question
    1) for PDF files–open in preview>>save as>>select quartz filter- reduce file size.
    2) for tiff/jpg open in image editor and change the resolution. Save as to NEW location.
in pages select the image and under format>>advanced menu "set as media placeholder" drag new image to this place to replace. TIP drag the icon in the title strip at the top of the saved file instead of locating in finder.
NOTE: for 2 if the image has been masked the pages image will need to be resized.
Of course this only works if the placed images have high resolution to start with or have been shrunk in the pages layout.
    I had a 120Mb 5 page file that is now under 10Mb

  • Why does my .sparseimage file size not reflect the amount of data insde of it?

    SUMMARY
I have an uncompressed sparese image file that has over 35GB of data inside of it, yet the image file always claims to be taking up 4.29GB of space on the drive on which it resides.
    DETAILS
The image file was created with Disk Utility useing the following settings:
When I mount the image and Show Inspector for the contents, I see this:
However, when I Get Info on the image file itself, mounted or not, I get this:
I was expecting that the size of the file would be reported as roughly the same as the size of it's contents.
    What gives?

Hello, and thank you for the new reply.
I'm sorry to be slow with my responses, but I am wrapped up in the task of sorting out what has turned out to be over 100GB of photos and videos that I shot over the last ten years and have backed up all over the place ... I'm sorting through all of it and getting it all organized for the first time.
OK, here are the results of ls -lR@ /Volumes/Bin/
    $ ls -lR@ /Volumes/Bin/
    total 8382080

    drwxr-xr-x         922      <username>  staff       31348 Mar  3 00:02 Videos
That'st the first bit, and there there are a zillion pages listing the contents of the top level directories. (Over 17k files)
Again, when I mount the sparseimage file, I see everything that I expect to see inside of it ... my backups of thousands of photos and hundreds of video files.  I can view all of them, so the data is definitely there.  This is why I am confused as to why the sparseimage file itself is being reported as so small!
I just noticed this ... there is a large video file in the root of the mounted image; 00000.MTS which happens to be 4.29GB in size ... everything else is located in one of the three directories that are listed.  Now, the sparseimage  happens to be reported as 4.29GB in size.  That can't be a coincidence.   Is the OS reporting the size of the sparseimage file based on the total reported contents of only the root directory?  If so, that would explain why it shows as being 4.29GB.  That would, however, be kind of a bug, no?  Should it not report the size of the sparseimage as being the total size of all of the contents of the image?
As a test, I just moved that file into the Videos directory and then unmounted the image.  bin.sparseimage is still reported as being 4.29GB.

  • Why is "Reduce File Size" in the "File" menu always disabled?

I have a rather large presentation file, about 100Mbyte, and Keynote has become almost impossible to use, because it has become so slow.
Have to wait about 5 seconds for each letter to appear on screen after typing! Almost impossible to use Keynote under these conditions.
So I tried to use "Reduce File Size" to reduce the presentation file size by compressing the images, but "Reduce File Size" is always disabled!
    Anybody else having such problems?
    Gerhard

OK, sounds like memory will be fine, so let's look at some other stuff...
Is it only one particularly keynote presentation that slows up for you, or does keynote behave in the same way even if you start from scratch and create a new presentation?
If it's just the one presentation then there's probably some content (possibly video) within it that KN takes exception to. Sometimes a single problematic slide or piece of content can slow down the whole app.
Is the problematic presentation one that was imported from Powerpoint? If so, import it again and look carefully at the import error/warning logs.
Before you start keynote, start up activity monitor - which will give you an indication of what programs are using all the CPU/memory/disk bandwidth etc. You'll then have an idea of whether it is KN maxing out on CPU or whether anything else is dragging the system down.
Another thing you could try would be to log in to a different user account on your machine (create one if necessary) and then try opening the presentation from within this different account. If this works for you then it suggests a problem with the keynote plist file in your original user account.
I don't know if it'd be acceptable to you, but if you could post a link to your problematic presentation then I could download it and try it out on my normally reliable Keynote on one of my computers. (Make sure that you've ticked the box to embed all media in the presentation)
Hope some of this is helpful,
    Mike.

  • I have to zip pdf files to email them to someone with a PC. The problem is they aren't smaller after zipping and I can't email them. I tried adjusting the Quartz filter to the Reduce file size. Now they're smaller, but the recipient can't read them. Help!

I need to zip pdf files to email them to a PC user. The problem is file size is not reduced.
I tried zipping them in Win 7 (which I use via Parallels 7) and sending them to the Finder to email.
But lately nothing is reduced.  I tried choosing the Reduce File Size option in the Quartz Filter when I save the doc. The file size was reduced. However, the recipient could not read the file. Everything was blurry.
    Is there a solution?

I have had (auto sent) 15 plus crash reports, (available as text) and had posted my scenario within the "lion- problems so far" article, so not to use up extra bandwith- or whatever- there are pictures there. I was not able to upload a PDF on site, and the staff @ Turbo CAd is working on it also. this is Lion specific new update, as I have posted many large format PDF's

  • Compress PDF vs. Reduced File Size Quartz Filter?

Sometimes the PDFs I produce through the print function get pretty huge.
In the PDF drop down on the print menu there is a compress PDF option that I sometimes use.
Then someone said I should go to print, to the copies and pages, select "colour sinc" and on the Quartz Filter select "Reduce File Size" then hit the "save as pdf" on the pdf button.
I have no idea what I just typed
What's the difference between the two approaches and which would produce the best quality PDF at an manageable size?
I just tried PDFing this page using the three options -- regular pdf, compressed pdf and that colour sink / quartz filter / reduce file size. Damned if the smallest file isn't the regular (at 76 kb) next is the reduced (92kb) and the largest file is the compressed (140kb). Maybe not a proper test but what the heck?
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

I believe that the same filter is applied no matter whether it is done through the Compress PDF button, which is an Automator action, or using ColorSync.
If you would like to experiment with it, you can also apply it through the ColorSync Utility. If you copy the Reduce File Size filter, you can change the amount of reduction done. You can preview the results there, too.
The filter only affects images, not text.

  • PDF Reduce File Size makes certain pdfs HUGE

Generally reduce file size works great for me but certain files, those coming from someone using Microsoft Publisher in particular, result in larger pdfs. She sends me newsletters for a website and sometimes the 3 page pdfs are 2-4mb. I tried opening in Preview and re-saving them using the Reduce File Size filter and the result is that they ballon up to 50-100mb!! Info for the file reveals that the pdf producer is GPL Ghostscript 8.15 and the content creator is PScript5.dll Version 5.2.2. I seem to be able to open and reduce file size using Acrobat so I'm not quite sure why Preview is choking on them.

Hi geekinthegarden- This does not surprise me. There are many variations and reiterations in specifications of the PDF format.
Going from Ghostscript language interpreter, to Apple in rendering could introduce complications which we will not be able to sort out in this forum encapsulating a complete description of a fixed-layout 2D documents that includes the text, fonts, images, and 2D vector graphics which compose the documents.
Suffice to say it is not a perfect science.
Print PDF has a compress PDF file option as well as ColorSynch in your /Utilities folder +reduce file size+ option for PDF's. This may or may not be of use.
You found your workaround using Acrobat, this is part of the value of having more than one PDF viewer, good computing!

  • What do I loose with "Reduce File Size" to Acrobat 8.0 compatability?

When scanning documents using the Acrobat interface in 9.0, I find that the file sizes are very large...about 1.5MB per page. If I then select the "reduce File Size" option from the Document tab, and select Acrobat 8.0 and later compatibility, the file size is reduced by 10 fold....to something approaching 150 KB per page. I don't see degradation of the scanned image on my screen....but am I loosing image quality?

I tried it at home & I used the optimize pdf thing. It went from 17MB to 12MB so I re-optimized it & got it down to 3MB. It's as good as it is going to get. The big problem is that the .pdf that I have was scanned on a copier machine.
I printed the 3MB pdf on the color printer & it came out okay, but then I printed it on the black & white printer & it barely had any ink on the page....
I am just going to not bother with it anymore. Not much I can do with a scanned document & it's not even my job to begin with!
    Thanks Bill.

  • Reduce File Size Errors

I am using Adobe Acrobat 9 standard on windows 7 home premium 64-bit. When I go to, document, reduce file size in adobe, I am getting 2 different error messages. It does not allow me to reduce the file size after I get these errors. Screen shots are below. Please help!!!!!

  • Where did "reduce file size" go?

My co-worker has acrobat reader version 7 and has a "reduce file size" option under the "file" menu.  I am on verion 9 and cannot find this option.  Can anyoen point me to where I can find it.  Thank you.

If he has "reduce file size" then he has Acrobat, not Reader. There is no "Acrobat Reader".

  • Delete pages doesn't reduce file size, why?

Using Adobe 6.0 on Windows XP.  Have 30k file and want to reduce size without doing as print file.  82 pages long.  Tried copying and deleting pages 42 thru 82 but file stays same size. Why doesn't it reduce to half  the size?

Basically Save As is supposed to remove everything that is deleted and or replaced. Sounds like it is not doing it for you for some reason. The Save retains the old stuff in case you change your mind -- no matter that nobody I know can get the info back anyway. This difference is apparently a hold over from copying how MS did it in OFFICE.
If you can not use Reduce File Size, then try the PDF Optimizer that has more options. You might want to concentrate on the image resolution and possibly color depth from what you are describing. I last ditch effort (not nec. recommended) is to print the PDF to a new one that uses a lower graphic resolution.

  • HT4114 Reduce file size when projecting onto large screen?

    Hi,
Does "Reduce File Size" reduce the quality of an image or video that is being projected from my iPad 3 onto a 10ft screen via VGA adaptor?  I'm teaching a film class, and multiple film clips and stills seem to cause Keynote to grind to a near halt.   We can't really get the room adequately dark, so I really don't want to reduce image quality any further.
Thanks in advance for any help suggestions!

Gretchen ~ I don't know the answer, but can say that I know of only one process that reduces file size without reducing image quality. Perhaps others will chip in here with more suggestions...
The free "JPEGmini" reduces the file size of JPEG images without reducing their dimensions or perceivable quality. The Web version allows you to upload and downsize one image at a time. The Mac App version avoids uploading and allows you to downsize up to 20 images per day for free.

  • Reduce File Size/Optimize ruins JPG quality

I create a lot of PDF maps with aerial imagery background.  These files are often large in file size and I usually run the Reduce File Size to reduce size by 80-90%.  I also include my company's logo (JPG) on these maps.  However, after running the Reduce File Size, the JPG looks blotchy and watercolored, and the crisp quality has been completely lost.  The aerial image, however, does not lose any quality.  I've gone through the Optimize PDF tools and it appears the only thing I can do is to not downsample the JPG, but then my file size is only reduced maybe 25%.  Is there a way to designate what images in the PDF you want to be resampled?

Assuming your logo is colored, no. Optimize runs globally on all images, so the only way to limit it's effect is if the image you want to omit is grayscale or mono, and the images to compress are all color.
The logical solution is not to add the logo beforehand. Optimize your PDF with just the map in, then add your logo as a new layer, and (optionally) flatten it.

  • How do I completely crop a PDF so that the cropped data is removed and the file size is reduced?

How do I completely crop a PDF so that the cropped data is removed and the total file size is reduced?
When I use the "Crop" function, the cropped data still remains in the file and there is no reduction in file size. I need a way to truly crop a PDF using Acrobat software.

When you export, try to get the full file path or else you will have to do a lot of manual searching.
If you downloaded the picture from Messages, the picture is stored in your User Library/Messages. to make your User Library visible, hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Messages/Attachments.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.
