Reducing file size produces a larger file (?)

I have a 3.8mb pdf (created in Acrobat 9) that I'd like to reduce in size. It's text only (about 450 pages) and when I select "Reduce file size" Acrobat X goes through steps to optimize it for the web, and it comes out 5.1 mb. Not really much of a reduction in size if it's now a meg and a half larger than the original. Is there a better way to do this that I'm missing here?

There are many things that could cause the issues. Under the Optimize option (or wherever it went in AAX) there is an audit function that allows you to see where the storage is going. You could compare before and after optimization to see what was happening. You say 450 pages is not much, but that all depends on what is there. If it is a lot of graphics, it could be huge. If you use a lot of different fonts, that can cause extra storage of all those fonts. So there are many variables and sometimes they do get bigger -- happened to me too. Unfortunately, when you are trying to make things smaller, you are often under the gun and don't have time to diddle around. Good luck.

    Hi,
The file size increases due to the high formatting options in BI 7.0.
Remove the formatting option from the work book setting in the Bex analyzer in design mode.

How do I reduce the size of a Keynote file beyond the reduction of zip?
Why do you need it smaller, what size is the file, what's in the file that you think is making it large.
If your trying to reduce file size to send by e-mail, use a file transfer service instead:  Dropbox.

  • My jpeg file sizes are much larger than they used to be.

Just recently the file sizes on my .jpeg files have become excessively larger than they used to be just a week or so ago. Where I used to go almost a week to need to archive to DVD a bunch of saved images, I've now got to save to DVD almost daily.
For example, a 300x300 pixel image which shoud be about 32 Kb reads 383 Kb in the finder. I'm not doing anything to these images, just draging and droping.
Where I used to get 7 K files on a DVD, I'm now getting less than 2 K files to each disc.
Any thoughts on what's changed and how to fix it?

  • I need to reduce the size of several pdf files before transferring them onto a research database. Each file is made up of 100 images (pages of diaries)

I need to reduce the size of several pdf files before transferring them onto a research database. Each file is made up of 100 images (pages of diaries) & is up to 1.36 GB in size. I have tried reducing file size in preview but the images are unreadable. Any ideas?

WHen I want to reduce the file size, I either use "Optimize Scanned PDF", or more often use "Reduce File Size". Both are on the Document menu. The Reduce File Size selection has some limited customization that is used, when selected.

With Adobe Acrobat.  It can also optimize your document to make the size smaller.

  • Is there a way to reduce the size of my PDF file, created (or I should say, Exported) in InDesign.

I created a 10-page sale flyer in InDesign CS5 which will be viewed on our website. When I export it as a PDF file, even with the compression at "minimum", the size is still 3.8 MB.
Is there a way to reduce the size of the PDF file? with InDesign or another tool out there?
    Thanks for your help!

To expand a little on what Jongware said, normally choosing vector over bitmap will decrease the filesize. If the vector art is very complex though, this will not be true.
Yup, a logo as bitmap takes up more space than the same as a vector -- unless the vector image is bitmap heavy (think Drop Shadow, Outline Glow; these are actually bitmap effects).
Also, check your PDF version. "Older" versions do not support live transparency, the latest do. Then again, you cannot use live transparency if you suspect your viewers may be using Mac OS X, because Apple's own PDF viewer sucks big time.

  • How can I reduce the size of a pdf file for emailing?

I want to send a pdf file which is 8 mb, it has bounced in an email because it is too big, how can I reduce the size of the pdf file for emailing?

Sometimes a simple "Save As" will reduce the file size slightly, but probably not enough to pass the <8 mb threshold of your recipient, as you need.
You've probably seen it, try the next option in the Save As menu, "Reduced Size PDF," and make it compatible with the latest version possible, again considering the recipient. This suggestion assumes Acrobat X. You don't say which version you're using, but this tool was available at least going back to Version 8, but in a different place, you'll have to hunt.
If all that doesn't work, you could remove some images from the source document, which also will reduce the overall size.
    Best luck.

  • "File size is too large"

When I imported the only 4 files in a particular folder (scans of photos) into the Organiser, the message "File size is too large" came up for two of them instead of preview images, although do appear to have been added to the Catalog as their MB size, pixel dimensions and creation date show in the Properies General tab.
I take it this must relate to pixel count and not the file size per se as the two tifs (13.2 and 13.3 MB but 1792 x 2508 and 2518 x 1798 pixels) are fine, while the two JPGs (12.9 and 30.8 MB and 9616 x 6480 and 7048 x 10376) are the ones without preview images?
I wasn't aware of this as a problem, so can anybody tell me please, have I just set too low a limit somewhere or is there a real restriction?
And is this new to PSE6 or something that's been around for a while?
    Thanks, Peter

    I have a 212mb psd file (a panorama).   I have Elements 6.0 and 4 meg RAM, Vista.
I went through the regedit process as outlined in Adobe Technote kb402760 and upped it to 1,000,000,000.  I would think that would have given enough headroom for my file size.  But it didn't.  I still have the generic "file size too large" on my thumbnails.
I did note that the tech note had a different location for the Software/Adobe/Elements 6.0/Organizer (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ ) from the location in my file structure.  In fact, this string was listed in at least three places OTHER THAN the one indicated in the Technote.  How likely is it that adding "MaxImageSize" to the Elements 6.0 register locations other than specifically indicated is the reason why the file size capacity was not increased.  Why doesn't Elements show up in the location indicated by the Tech Note?
NOTE FOR ADOBE:  Why isn't this a more easily accessible option in the user interface?  If I have a large file that slows things down a bit on my thumbnails, that could be my choice.  This artificial constraint built into the regedits that no one goes to is too much like parental controls for 5 year olds.

    You have two options:http://www.screencast.com/t/p3srGDGP
In this screen shot I have two method chosen.
the one highlighted in yellow is more effective, except in the case where the pdf was from a Scan which is graphics only.
select the one in yellow first and click on Fonts. Remove all duplicates. for some reason, I don't know if its defect in Acrobat, but usually multiple copies of the exact Font will show up and some cases there will font families not even used in your document.  remove all duplicates.
Note: Duplicates do not mean for example: Helvetica, Helevetica Bold, Helvetica Bold Italic (these are three different fonts).
You can reduce the quality of the graphics used and so on while in menu.
The feature highlighted in green  more or less just reduce the general qaulity of the PDF. and may work for some PDF's

  • Trying to email a video and the file size is to large to attach.

Trying to email a friend a video and it says the file size is to large to attach.  How do I change this?

Go into your photo-video program and change the file size to the smallest resolution possible. Also limit the video to less than 30 seconds to a minute.
Then try sending again. The problem you are having is because the file is too large to send via the method you are using.

  • How can I reduce the size of a gif file?

Hello, I'm trying to save a 88 layer image as .gif file. there are two questions I have:
    1. I'm trying to resize the image but when I try to save it as .gif the colors are just messed up and greyish. how can I resize it without messing up the pixel colors?
    2. What's the best way to reduce the file size? Is it the dimension of the image? is it the number of colors used in it? or there is another options that i need to manipulate to get a better result?
    thanks in advance.

The thing is, my friend is using imageready and he says his files have about 150 layers but only 2-3MB
You need to understand how GIF compression works. It doesn't matter whether you have 1 or 500 layers, 20 or 500 frames of animation. Hell, even the image dimensions do not necessarily matter. The only determining factor for file size is how many colors are spread across the size of the image or the frames, respectively, and those, as the others said can never be more than 256. after that, it is down to how many contiguous areas there are in the image and how large they are - large solid areas are better to compress than many small areas as the overhead increases. I suggest you give these things some consideration first before blindly pushing buttons, which - no offense - is what you seem to be doing right now. You are guessing what might look good, but don't understand how to control it to make it better.
