Reducing Mail Storage Space on Mac OS X Server

Hi,
We have a very large mail database on Mac OS X Server as we store a lot of images etc. in our email.
I have been trying to delete older messages, and deleting them off the server but this seems to have little net effect in terms of opening up more free disk space on the server.
I have deleted older emails on each client version of mail and after also chose the Erase Deleted items option to make sure that the messages are being deleted off the server
In addition I noticed also that /var/spool and /var/spool/imap continue to remain at close to 150GB each?
I tried to look up online as to what these directories hold and am wondering if there is something I need to do (after deleting messages) to help compact the mail database and perhaps thereby reduce the amount of files in /var/spool & var/spool/imap
Does anyone have any suggestions or help in this matter - would be most appreciated.
Thanks - Rohin

The mail content is stored in /var/spool/imap/user/ and I'm surprised that you're seeing content sizes for those folders (unless perhaps you're logged in as root) since they are owned by cyrus and not otherwise accessible. Mine only shows about 320MB (the size of the database) for the /spool/imap/ folder when I know that the actual contents are weighing in at around 10GB..
There are maintenance tools in Server Admin that will let you reconstruct individual mail accounts as well as repair the mail service database. Best done by stopping the mail service and performing the maintenance.

  • Icloud storage space for Mac book

Will I get any extra icloud storage space , when I buy mac book pro. I am already using iPhone and ipad, so my 5GB icloud storage is almost finished. I know creating one more icloud I'd can give 5GB more , but I don't want too much ID and password.

The 5GB is tied to the account, not the devices using it, so no matter how many devices you have logged into it you still only have 5GB free for the one account. As said, you can purchase more: additional 10GB, $20 p.a., 20 GB, $40 p.a., 50GB $100 p.a.

  • Can't send mail using webmail on Mac OS X Server 10.4

Could someone help me figure out why I can't send email via webmail on Mac Mac OS X Server 10.4. I tried in and out of my LAN but it will not work. I am pretty sure that it's no firewall issue because it won't even work inside the LAN. Another thing I have considered is DNS issues. But my SMTP and POP3 works fine. Don't they use same DNS mail exchange record. Or should I ask my ISP to create a new record for webmail?

  • Reducing table storage space in oracle 8i

    Hi,
I am trying to reduce the space usage of the historical tables I have.
These tables contains Data of the previous months. The only table(snapshot) we can retrive the historical data from.
Is there any table compression technique or script that can help me? I can't afford to reduce the PCTFREE parameter.
    Waiting for your valuable suggestions
    Regards
    Rajib

    Hi Rajib,
Dropping unused extents will definelty help you reduce the space occupied. But before that you need to know how many extents are totally blank. if more percent of extents are completely blank then this option will help you to a certain extent.
You can make use of dbms_rowid package and dba_extents and find out no of blocks/extents partially or completely free.
Or else , rebuilding a table is a best option , but again depends on the size of the table. If bigger the table, time taken to rebuild ill be more. If you can afford this time, then well and fine.

  • Mail storage space limit

I'm using Macbook Air OS X 10.7.4, I've a question regarding Mail application. Is there an option by which Mail stores the latest 50-100 emails and delete the rest from the MacBook but not from the main server? So if I login through like gmail.com, I find all my emails there. Or if I can manually do that?
If I will manually delete my email from the Mail, it is also deleted on the main server, any way I could delete it from mail and still find it on main site?

When you say you are unable to erase emails to free up space, do you mean you need to keep all the email you have, or that you try to delete email and run into some problem?
If you need all your emails and room for more, you can buy more iCloud space if you are not at the maximum. If you are already at the maximum size account, I can only say "Wow, you have a lot of email!" and suggest you look into moving some messages to another mail system.
If you run into some problem when you try to delete email, let us know what sort of a problem you are having.

  • How can I reduce the storage needs for iMovie events (raw video)

Good news - After borrowing an 8mm analog camcorder (mine died years ago) and an older digital camcorder (mine doesn't support A/V in) I have been able to set up a "bridge" to convert our old 8mm home videos to digital and import them to iMovie.
Bad news - At 13GB per 8mm tape, plus the Mini DV tapes we also have, getting it all in the computer with room to grow is going to require at least 500GB of space, which I don't have. On hand are 120GB internal (MacBook), 120GB external (Time Machine) and 40GB portable.
After my experience with the 8mm analog camcorder (it died, couldn't buy them anymore, tapes useless) I want to get everything digital in a standard format with backup.
    1) Is there any way to reduce the storage space required for the raw video (Events) without impacting image quality (already mediocre in the tapes converted from analog)?
    2) What's the best way to squeeze an hour of video down to fit on a DVD but still leave the video available for re-import/editing in the future? I'd likely mail the DVDs to my parents house or something to keep them separate.
    Thanks!

    Hi
    You can also use
    Yousendit (google it)
where You can send 200Mb movies
    - You download Your movie to them
    - get an Internet address back ( url - I think it's called )
    - this You copy and send in Your e-mail to those that want's Your movie
    - and now they can get it from same address
If You pay You can send up to 2Gb (if I remember right)
BUT it will take time ! In most of my cases - burn it onto a DVD and send by snail-mail most often are a better solution.

  • Storage space Tering feature

Customer would like to use Storage space tiering feature of Windows Server 2012 R2
However, the server host has a hardware raid card inside it.
Could we still enable Storage space tiering feature in such scenario? Thanks.

    Hi Thomashk23,
If you want to enable storage space with other disk not contain RAID disk , I think it is supported .

  • Storage spaces , stale metadata

    Hi!
First of all, unfortuneatly I wasn't able to attach screenshots, so I'll try to describe the problem in text.
I ran in to a storage spaces problem on a Windows server 2012 where the pool is degraded. Disk 9 seems to have been evicted to the primordial pool.
Running the Get-PhysicalDisk shows a Stale Metadata operational status.
    PhysicalDisk9       False               Stale Metadata      Warning
    Auto-Select
However, I've got no alerts from our SCOM monitoring regarding this.  Also when looking in the raid tools supplied by the JBOD manufacturer everything seems to be fine, so I got no alerts from that one either. In the manufacturers software the disk
is reported as Status: available with 0 SMART errors.
So the question is: What is the stale metadata error? Is this disk actually broken? (doesnt seem like that according to the vendors utilitys). Should this disk be replaced or is it some kind of software errror that can be repaired?
    Advice needed.
    BR

    Hi,
the same here, latest Windows 2012 R2 updates were installed. LB Policy is FOO. It is a SOFS Cluster with 2 Nodes and 4JBODS
    Get-StoragePool Pool1 | Get-PhysicalDisk | FT –AutoSize
FriendlyName   CanPool OperationalStatus HealthStatus Usage   Size
PhysicalDisk57 False   Stale Metadata    Warning      Warning  930.75 GB
What cloud be the reasons for "Stale Metadata" in Storage Spaces ?

  • Tiered Storage Spaces with LSI RAID Controller 9260-8i (no JBOD) - Performance Drop

    Hello
    I have a Lab-Server with a LSI-Raid-Controller 9260-8i and 2x 256GB SSDs / 6x 600GB HDDs. First I configured the LSI-Raid-Controller with a RAID 1 (2x 600GB HDD) and installed
Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V Role on this RAID 1. This works just fine. Then I configured the LSI-Raid-Controller with additional 6x "Raid 0 Drive Groups" where each Drive Group has one single physical drive
in it. And then I created 6 virtual drives out of these 6 Drive Groups. So far so good: my Windows Server 2012 R2 now sees 6 new Harddrives (4x 600GB HDD and 2x 256GB SSD). I then created a Storage Pool out of these 6 drives (with PowerShell /
assign MediaType SSD/HDD) and on top of the Storage Pool a "Tiered Storage Space" with Mirror Layout (2x 256GB SSDs mirrored and 2x2x 600GBs  HDD mirrored). This gives me a Tiered Storage Space of about 1.3TB. On this Storage
Space I created a Virtual Drive of 1.3TB capacity. Success!! It seems to work fine.... Even I do not have a Storage-Controller supporting JBOD directly, I was able to create a Tiered Storage Space!!
Now where's the problem? Fine-Tuning the LSI-Raid-Controller Settings and the resulting
    Disk Performance....
    1) LSI-Raid-Controller: Virtual Drive Properties: What should I choose? Read Policy (Ahead or no) / Write Policy (Write Back with BBU or Write Through) / IO Policy (Direct IO or cached IO) / Disk Cache Policy (enable or disabled or unchanged)
/ Stripe Size (256 KB or ??). Do these settings conflict with the Windows Server Storage Space Layout?
    2) Windows Server Disk Management (under "Disk XY"):  Write Cache Policy? (activate Write Cache on this Device)
    3) Windows Server Device Manager (under "Drives" - Microsoft Storage Space Device):  Write Cache Policy? (activate Write Cache on this Device)
    4) Performance - Results with Crystal Disk Mark: the inital Results after setting up the Storage were quite good (Seq R: 550 MB/s and W: 590 MB/s //  512K R: 490MB/s and W: 618 MB/s // 4K R: 18MB/s and W: 37 MB/s  //  4KQD32
    R:270 MB/s and W:37 MB/S) But 2 months later the values dropped to: Seq R: 290 MB/s and W: 170 MB/s //  512K R: 120MB/s and W: 239 MB/s // 4K R: 1.5MB/s and W: 31 MB/s  //  4KQD32 R: 9 MB/s and W: 71 MB/S). Huge loss of performance
    - SSD full?
    5) Since this is a Hyper-V Server I put some VMs on it. The Performance within the VMs has also dropped accordingly. Are there any
best practices when placing VHDX-Files on  a Tired Storage Space? I could of course assign one or two VHDX-Files directly to the SSD Tier, but actually I don't want that because that would use too much SSD-Space.
    Any Experts on this Subject?
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
For the settings of the Raid Controller, it is better to confirm with manufacturer for detailed information. As you said these settings will affect with storage space settings.
From the description you set the 6 disks as 6 RAID0 groups. Is it supported to leave these disks as JBOD and directly add them into a storage space? If Raid settings will affect storage space performance, this could help us avoiding the RAID settings.
As data is already written onto the virtual disk, we may not available to recreate it. You could have a try with following PowerShell cmdlet to see if it will work better after optimize.
    Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter X -TierOptimize

  • Storage space for sub mail accounts

Does anyone know how I can allocate more storage space for my additional mail accounts? I ran out of space and purchased another 2gb of storage on my .mac account. However, none of this space is allocated to my additional mail accounts i.e. all of it goes into my main mail account (where I dont need it...). Any advice?

This forum is for discussing issues related to the Mail & Address Book applications included with Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). Yours appears to be a .Mac issue that has absolutely nothing to do with Mac OS X’s Mail. The right forum for such questions would be one of the .Mac Forums, such as .Mac General, for example.

  • Need to reduce iCloud storage - help archive mail

I neeed to reduce my iCloud storage due to the upcoming mobile me changes.
I have a huge amount of mail storage, my question, what is the best way to store old email files locally rather than on iCloud? can archive store locally?
    Thanks

    In Mail on your Mac:
Create a new mailbox: make sure that it's under 'On My Mac' not 'iCloud'.
Go to your inbox, or wherever your old emails are store, in the 'iCloud' part of your list in Mail.
Select the latest, then shift-click the earliest, of the emails you want to move. I shouldn't try to do too many at once.
Drag them to the mailbox you just created.
Take the dog for a walk while they download. They will be removed from the server.
You'll have to do this from time to time to keep the numbers on iCloud down (Rules apply only to mail as it comes in so AFAIK you can't apply the process automatically to emails once they reach a certain age).

  • N9: MfE Hotmail: Mail Storage Full Free some space...

    Hi Friends,
Does anyone having the error " Mail Storage Full free up some space first"...? I have this issue with N9. I just deleted the account and added it again and Hotmail working under mmailsettings.. but no contacts.
I have so many issues with Hotmail & contacts that I am going to abandon my N9 once Lumia 920 released (of course I will remain Nokia Fan)...
    I just wanted to know:
    1. Once my MfE stops, my whole contact list disappear? Extremely annoying and I don't know to add contacts again.
    2. I don't care about mail, I just need my contacts back.. does anyone knows how to keep the contacts in the phone once imported? and they remain in the phone for life?
Please help.. I usually don't attend phone from unknown contacts and now all my friends are unknown as the phone numbers are not associated with their names.
    Thank you.

you can go into the setting of the exchange account and make it NOT sync the contaacts after you have them on your phone.
