Reducing or eliminating dead air in audio

Up to now I have used a passive mic mixer to capture dialog from external mics while I am filming. Works great. Dead silence except for the dialog. (BTW if you're interested, I've been using Beachtek and SignVideo mixers, they are great but they only have 2 mic inputs)
However now I have a project where I have to use an active mixer (a Rolls MX124, battery powered, thankfully, not AC; nice little unit, 4 mic inputs). I've done a test recording and there is noticeable dead air in the background. I have turned the levels down as far as I can and still capture the dialog.
Any suggestions on an audio filter/setting in FCE that I can use to reduce the dead air? I tried various audio filters before with no real success; reducing the high frequencies affects everything, not just the dead air. And the frequency range of the dead air is too great for the parametric EQ filter. I suppose Soundtrack Pro's noise filter would be the fix, but I'm not in a position to buy Pro just for this project.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestion about the noise gate. I played with it some time ago for other reasons and will give it another try.
I don't share your opinion of Rolls equipment. My experience has been very satisfactory with them and I'd recommend them to anyone.
Yes, I'd prefer my Mackie mixer but there are 2 problems with that - no AC in the field and anyway as soon as AC is involved, I get problems with hum, at least with my DV cams. That's why I've been using passive mixers.

  • CWMS 2.0MR7 intermittent dead air on call-in and call-back for internal and external users

    Hello,
I have got a new install of CWMS 2.0MR7 800 users non HA system. During initial testing we noticed that when we call-in or call-back there was a dead air even though the call is connected we don't hear welcome to WebEx....when we hang up and call again it works fine and we hear welcome to WebEx so the issue is intermittent. CUCM version is 8.6
Can someone please advise how do we go about troubleshooting something like this when the issue is so intermittent?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Please check the following:
    1. Please check if you are on supported hardware and that no co-resident VMs exist:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/collaboration/CWMS/2_0/Planning_Guide/Planning_Guide_chapter_01011.html#reference_249B138B71324D19B09141D3849EC058
    2. Check if you have any snapshots on any of the virtual machines for the system. If you have captured any snapshots before an upgrade, make sure that you delete them within 24 hours as they cause degradation of system performance and are known to cause audio quality issues.
    3. Please check your network bandwidth for these requirements:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/collaboration/CWMS/1_5/Planning_Guide/Planning_Guide_chapter_01.html#reference_267DB686BB224EB7A49DE4C783C912E6
If you still face the problem, please open a TAC case to troubleshoot the issue further. We will be able to get detailed logs and sniffers to find the cause of the issue.
    Thanks,
    Jyothi

  • Why does Audition add 'dead air' to the end of my files?

I have numerous mp3's that I have batch processed total RMS, then I have reduced noise on each. When I saved them all out, their lengths have changed significantly.
When listend to, they sound normal, except that where they should end there is now an additional 45 seconds (or more) dead air.
Opening them in Audition shows them as the original length - no dead air. So, I am a little frustrated because I cannot edit what I cannot even see.
I am working in Audition 5.5, macbook pro...
Thanks for your help in advance!

After recent upgrade to Yosemite on Macbook air bluetooth audio cuts out and associated video stops with audio. Likewise with airplay and Apple TV. I have deleted all my saved wifi connections and restarted numerous times. I do not expect a resolution from the community, but hope to get the attention of Apple engineers. If you are having same problems or have a miracle cure I am all ears.

May start my own thread, but I'm having similar issues.
I've been using an old iMac (running 10.7.5) and Apple TV for years with no issues. Last week I bought a new Macbook Pro running Yosemite and have had audio issues multiple times. The weird thing is that sometimes it works flawlessly, other times (like now) I spend half an hour just trying to get a song to play.
My issues are: When I got to "computers" in Apple TV to stream my music, my music is sometimes chopper or intermittent, and I seen to know when it's going to happen based on the status wheel just before it plays. When I choose a song, the status wheel will spin for an unusually long time, usually an indicator that the audio is either not going to work, or stutter.
When it does finally pull up a song, the playhead sits at the beginning of the song for a good 3-5 seconds before actually playing. Then, when it starts playing, it's all downhill. It will play a few seconds, drop out, play a few more seconds, drop out, and then ultimately the playhead will keep moving across the song as if it's playing, but there's no audio.
Again, this is a new phenomenon never experienced by me. I've tried everything I could think of, some of them all at once:
    • restart Apple TV
    • restart Macbook Pro
    • quite iTunes/open
    • turn off Home Sharing on iTunes then reconnect it
    • unplugging and cycling both my modem and router
None of these have alleviated the problem.
The odd thing is, like this morning, the audio started up perfectly and never gave me any issues. It wasn't until later in the day that it started. Perhaps after the macbook pro had been put to sleep? Not sure.
Regardless, this is an annoying trait, one that's new to me and my system (as stated, worked flawlessly until my new purchase), and is 100% limited to either a) the macbook pro b) Yosemite or c) both of them.

  • Dead Air Phone Calls with Blue Tooth and Speaker function?

My experience with Note 4 speaker function and blue tooth headsets is they malfunction as often as they work properly during phone calls.  When the speaker or blue tooth is activated during a call there is dead air between myself and the other party.  I am on my fourth Note 4 in a month due to this problem, that is I bought a new phone and Verizon has sent me three replacements in an effort to fix the issue.  Each phone has malfunctioned in exactly the same way.  Verizon and Samsung are unable to discuss this with me other than to go through all the diagnostic steps every time I call to ask for help.  I am at the point of either living with the problem or changing phones altogether.
Something I find amazing is when I talk to Verizon or Samsung they say this is not a reported issue.  Maybe I am the only person who had this experience.  Maybe I got the only four Note 4's (in a row) that malfunction like this.  Maybe.
This leaves holding the phone to my ear, which is rather old school and does not work with my state's driving laws.   Any fixes or reality checks are welcome.

        SteveQuintanaRealEstate,
I'm saddened to hear that you've had such an experience with your Galaxy Note 4's.  It sounds like Verizon has done everything possible to assist with your Samsung devices.  Have you noticed any patterns to when the malfunctions occur?

  • Getting an album to play without that little "dead air" pause in between tracks

I have a Zen Xtra. I've uploaded a bunch of cds. some of the albums, the songs overlap alittle from track to track. there is no "dead air" in between.
How do I get the Zen Xtra to play the album without that little "glitch" when going from track to track ?

Creative players do not support gapless playback or have a crossfading feature built into them. The only way you are going to get this is by making your album one long mp3 track but by doing this you will not be able to skip from song to song using your FF/RW buttons.
A Rockbox'ed iPod, Archos, iRi'ver or iAudio (www.rockbox.org) will do gapless and crossfading but you must load the Rockbox firmware onto these devices, bypassing the nati've firmware that came with the player (I know with iPod you can boot into Apple firmware by pressing a key during bootup ... I have a Rockbox'ed iPod 5G) ... but AFAIK, the Rio Karma was the only player that has nati've crossfading and gapless support (I have one and it rocks but sadly they are not made anymore as Rio no longer exists. Ebay is the way to get them but 99% of them are used/refurbished ... I got mine refurbished). So far, there is no Rockbox support for Creative players.Message Edited by mdscriber3 on 04-06-200605:09 PM

well...that's disappointing. if they are so "creative" they should "create" a player that does the gapless playback. nobody wants to hear those little gaps when they're listening to abbey road or whatever.. thumbs down !

  • Callers are intermittently getting dead air then disconnected when arriving on the CVP !!

Callers are intermittently getting dead air then disconnected when arriving on the CVP ,
Is the problem with Voice Gateway (Ingress)/Gateway Device issue in CVP server ??
    Thanks !!!
    Shridhar Reddy

First thing to check would be Router Log Viewer to see if you have missed a Dialed Number - Call Type association on one of your CVP PIMs. If the gateway sends the call to a Proxy which then distributes to Call Servers, and not all the PIM Dialed Numbers are associated with the Call Type that runs your Scheduled Script, some will fail will all others will work.
You need to provide more information for us to have a stab at a remedy.

  • Dead air calls on random numbers

    Hi,
We are experiencing random dead air calls to a specific entry(Invalid/no input) on a call flow. We have a flow which has CED which contains around 6 cases excluding invalid input/Timeout flow in ICM Script. Of those CED 5 and Invalid input/timeout will make a transfer to a Hunt group for same extension.
So if any body press 5/invalid input they will get transferred to a same extension which is configured as hunt group in cucm. The challenge here is we are getting a dead air calls randomly only to the invalid entry not other entry which is doing the same call treatment with same extension.
Any advise to fix this would be much helpfull..

Hello stufaro, let's solve this mystery! It sounds like someone has activated call forwarding on their phone and have accidentally made the calls route to your number instead of to another line if they input the number incorrectly. I'm sorry to say that only the other user can deactivate the call forwarding from their phone. The next best solution would indeed be to change your number if the calls are frequent.

  • TAPS isn't working. Dead Air

I'm working with CUCM 7.1.5 and UCCX 8.0 and have properly configured the TAPS on the both sides.
When I dial the Route Point number, the caller hears dead air. The caller hears no  ringback prompts, such as a busy tone or an engage tone.
When I have installed the UCCX 8.0, I have choosed to use G.711 and the phone is using G.711 to dial CCX.
Anyone already had the same issue or know how to fix that?
Thank you and I really appreciate

    Hi,
    Adding Languages for TAPS Prompts
To set the languages for TAPS prompts, use the following procedure.
    Procedure
Step 1  In the Cisco CallManager Administration window, choose Bulk
Administration > TAPS > User Locales for TAPS. The User Locales
    Configuration window displays.
Step 2 In the User Locales list box, which is the list of languages that
are installed on Cisco CallManager, choose the languages that you want
to use for user prompts. Click the arrow to move the chosen language to
the Selected User Locales list box.
You can choose as many languages as you need for user prompts and move
them to the Selected User Locales list box.
Step 3 After you have chosen the languages for user prompts, to create a
    job, click Submit.
Step 4 Use the Job Scheduler option in the Bulk Administration main menu
to schedule and/or activate this job.
This procedure assumes you have already loaded the language packs onto
    your CallManager.
    Hope it helps.
    Anand

  • Main # Ans'rd by AA - Select Contact Ctr Options or Ext - Dead Air

We've had this issue for about 8 months, where a caller dials our main #, it's answered by the Auto Attendant as soon as one of the Contact Center options or the Customer Service extension is chosen, the caller intermittently encounters dead air/silence.
It has occurred on all of our Auto Attendant options and specifically on our Customer Service ext.   Since this issue is intermittent & consistent, it's been a challenge to troubleshoot.  I've worked with our Cisco vendor in conjunction with several Cisco Engineers (Call Manager & UCCX) W/O resolution.
Additionally, our telco provider was also involved for a couple of months, intrusive testing and still no resolution.  I have spent a great deal of time and $, but I sincerely think what's happening is something simple and is being overlooked.
The first occurrence began when the systems below were upgraded from 7.1 to 8.5:
Cisco Publisher & Subscriber - System Version:  8.5.1.15900-4
Cisco UCCX - System Version: 8.5.1.11003-32
    Cisco Unity System Version: 8.5.1ES102.15900-102
    Voice Gateway  - Cisco 2921
The many times I've recently tested, I was only able to recreate the issue once.  The dead air occurred I called from my ext. (registered in Cisco SUB) to the Customer Service ext. (registered with the Cisco PUB)...in this test, no telco is involved just a call between Call Managers.  So is the issue in the Call Managers or on the Voice Gateways?
Has anyone experienced this issue and can provide feedback on any further steps to be considered?

    Hi Susan,
I'm taking a stab and assuming your call flow traverses your VG and UCCX.
Have you checked in the UCCX RTMT tool to confirm your overall telephony subsystem state is in service?
It is possible there might be an issue with a trigger/CTI port. The UCCX application steps through ports so if 95 of them are ok and 1 has issues it will take time to get there but it eventually will.
The same theory applies if the call is traversing voice gateways. The VG consumes channels as call volume builds and it could take time, but eventually you will hit the misbehaving channel. I've seen this on T1/CAS configurations .. the call connects (dead air) however, the channel is waiting for more inputs and eventually times out and we hear the extremely rare, highly regarded "Your call cannot be completed ... " recording.
Good luck .. these take time to find ...
    Thanks,
    Keith

  • Agent Reserverd caller hears Dead air after CUCM upgraded to 10.5.2.11005-1

After a recent upgrade on my SME head end cluster from CUCM 9.1.2.11900-12 to 10.5.2.11005-1 I have been having an issue with my call center agents on a leaf cluster running 7.1.5.35900-7 (Cluster 1).  This is both enterprise and express agents.
The call comes in on a leaf cluster running CUCM 9.1.2.11900-12 (Cluster 2)
Then goes to a head end SME CUCM 10.5.2.11005-1 cluster via a SIP trunk
Then the calls goes to a CUCM 7.1.5.35900-7 (Cluster 1) leaf cluster via an Inter-Cluster Trunk
The call center agents get put in reserved status but never get the call.
The callers just hear dead air.
The only changes is the upgrade to the head end cluster to 10.5.2.11005-1.
If I add a dial peer on the PSTN gateway CUCM 9.1.2.11900-12 (Cluster 2) leaf cluster so the call goes from gateway to CUCM 7.1.5.35900-7 (Cluster 1) the agent does not have any issues.
My initial thought is a possible change on the trunks from Cluster 2 to SME or SME to Cluster 1.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Not sure if this is related since this was a while back and it was on version 8.5 that I noticed this. If I recall there is was an issue with the SME cluster talking to the leaf cluster. If the SIP Trunk was talking to a specific node in the cluster, the intra cluster signaling had some problems. i.e. if you had Sub-A and Sub-B and if the SME Cluster sent the invite to Sub-A while the phone sat on Sub-B, the call wouldn't go through. It had to do with making sure that the Call Manager Group assigned to the device pool that was assigned to trunk had all CCM nodes in the cluster added to it. This became an irritation when I was working on it because we had more than 3 CCM Subscribers and there is a limit of 3 CCM nodes per Call Manager group and we had 4 CCM subs in the cluster which means we would never be able to send calls to a phone in the leaf cluster registered to the 4th node that wasn't part of the CCM Group for the device pool used by the SIP trunk between the Leaf and SME cluster.
You are dealing with 10.5 and you also mention that this was working prior, so I am not sure if this is the same, but I would certainly play around with the CMG for the device pool of the trunk and the CM that the phone registers to.
