Reducing pdf size - compressing images

I have a word document with a lot of images. the doc has 2.3 mega but the pdf gets around 8.5 mega; I've tried many settings in Adobe PDF but I cannot reduce the pdf size;
thank you

If you are using WORD 2003 or later, you can click on one of the images to get the format menu, select compress in the lower left corner, and compress the graphics in the WORD file. If you want to keep the original, do this on a copy (good idea anyway) and then create the PDF using the Adobe PDF printer. You may be getting the size due to features added by PDF Maker if you are using that.
Within Acrobat, your options are either FILE>Reduce File Size or the PDF Optimizer. You can also just print to a new PDF. A lot depends on how you created the PDF and you provided no info there. Also, what OS and version of Acrobat?

I am on a Windows 7 OS attempting to reduce pdf size with my Adobe Acrobat Standard XI & Pro.  The application keeps timing out and  at the Subsetting embedded fonts portion and the application gives "Adobe Acrobat has stopped working" and then closes.  The document is 275 pages.  Is there something I can do to stop this?

    Hi Ricci,
Since when are you facing this issue? Did you tried system restore to a date before this problem occured.
Does acrobat stop working when you open this specific pdf file or with any pdf file that you open?

  • How can i reduce the size of Images  in MIDlet

    Hi all,
How can i reduce the size of Images in Form, bcoz they are covering lots of spaces in form due to that other items are not displaying in specific order.
    Best regrads

Better you can use Canvas class and using drawImage() function you can show the image. Before that you have to Get the maximum size of your phone screen using the following:
    x = (width/2) - (image.getWidth()/2);
    y = (height/2) - (image.getHeight()/2);

I want to reduce pdf size up to 5mb for mailing perpose, anybody have any option to reduce it since I have used optimizer & reduce file size option but its not helpful.

The optimizer can reduce space, but some things can't get smaller. Text for example. Play with the settings, examine the results of Audit Space Usage.
Or give up. Even 5 MB is too large for a bulk mailing, by far. Instead put it on your web site and mail a link - done!

  • Need Help with Reducing PDF Size

Hey I'm having trouble reducing my PDF file sizes.
First off, they were school projects created in Adobe Illustrator that I save to PDF form.
I'm trying to email several of them to potential employers (through Gmail) but the file size limit is 25MB, and some of my files exceed that limit.
For example I have one PDF file that is 72MB.
I've compressed the file by right-clicking on the icon --- I've also reduced the file in Acrobat and that doesn't do anything.
Now I try to reduce the files and Acrobat tells me:
"The PDF document contained image masks that were not downloaded."
So can anyone help me?  I would greatly appreciate this from everyone who has time to comment and give me suggestions/help.
    Thanks.

If you can find when a pictures is loaded (not when it is getting loaded, but after it has just finished being loaded), that is when you can check the size using the Loader (loader.width and loader.height).

  • Reducing PDF size (to put online)

Can anyone advise how to make the smallest possible PDF file size, to be added to a website?
I have a 40 page document, originally produced in Quark, then exported as a postscript file, then converted to PDF using Distiller. I have used the PDF optimiser in Acrobat 7.0.9, along with the 'Reduce File Size' option, but have only been able to compress the PDF down to 9.5MB. I'm sure I have seen other multi-page PDFs online at much smaller sizes - how do they do it??
The PDF has to remain compatible with Acrobat 5, could this be the issue? Any ideas gratefully received!
    (I am using a 1.8ghz G5, with 1.5GB Ram, incase that helps!)

Like Andrea, I too have a series of largish (about 30 pages each) documents to make into pdfs for putting on a website. I'm getting big file sizes (about 8-10mb), even when I save them as a 'screen' quality pdf. My images are jpgs (none very large) but there are quite a lot of roll-overs (at least 100 per document). I've used InDesign CS to create the files and am currently using Acrobat CS Professional 6. I have optimised them in every way I can think off.
I have been thinking about upgrading to Creative Suite CS3. Does anyone have any idea if there are any features in the latest versions which will help me reduce my file sizes? It could well be the factor that decides it!

  • Reducing PDF size with textfields, checkboxes...

    Hello All,
I have a pdf which i've embedded a few hundred textfields and checkboxes on.
The native size of the pdf was ~120KB, after the addition of the input fields it's 1MB.
I'm searched and performed the suggestions in the pdf optimizer section, to reduce images, remove embedded fonts, etc.
But it appears there is no way to reduce the size when there are embedded input fields.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    M

  • Reduce File Size causes images to be blurry

I created a document in Pages '09 that contains several masked images, resulting in a really large file size. I clicked Reduce File Size to get rid of the cropped parts of the images. Unfortunately, the images are now blurry. Any way to mask or crop a picture, or use Reduce File Size, without loss of image quality?

The images are being reduced to 72dpi with no sharpening that I can see and the excess image outside the masking shape doesn't seem to get trimmed. I suspect you then saved to a pdf with a lower quality setting which would have given a 2nd reduction in quality on top of the first.
So the best option is to take your images into Preview, crop them, reduce their resolution and sharpen them then bring them back into your Pages layout before exporting to pdf.

  • Reduce PDF size by flattening InDesign file??

i have a 68 page catalog design in InDesign. i export as PDF/X-1a:2001 for printing. it comes out as 96MB and the printers site wont accept it. so they are telling me to flatten the images and layers in the PDF. I thought that type of PDF already does flatten everything so im not sure what they are talking about. Another project i worked on the transparencys were not coming through right to the printer, they also asked me to flatten the transparencies. but that i did in photoshop before bringing it into InDesign. This catalog file im on now... there are a ton of images and it wont take forever to flatten every image and re-place in InDesign. is there a better option to reduce the PDF size but still keep high quality for print? Thank you.

There are several different, and contradictory, meanings of "flatten" so it's on order to ask exactly what kind of flattening they want and what tools to do it with.
One meaning of "flattening" is to flatten transparency, turning it into images or composite shapes.
    Now
    1. This sort of flattening almost always makes things bigger, not smaller - if there is transparency in the first place.
    2. When you save as PDF/X1-a or PDF/X-3 it will always be flattened; that's the rules.
    3. So the choice of PDF/X-1a forces flattening and often makes files much bigger.
    Do the printer require PDF/X-1a?

  • Reducing PDF-size: automatic reduction of datapoints that are used to draw lines in a 2d-axis system within report

Creating fancy pdf-files for costumers and other purposes is great. However, if the experimental data include many datapoints (>200000) a line-2d-graph ends up in a very big pdf-file. Especially when many pages need to be used.
    Explanation:
When I use lines to show experimental data in 2d-plots the size of my PDF-file is directly influenced by the number of datapoints used. The more datapoints are used to draw lines within the graph, the bigger the exported PDF-files of the report are.
It would be great to limit the number of points used to draw a line as it can be done with markers without using the curve transformation option. - Hence, e.g. plotting a line with the help of 200 datapoints is usually as good as showing the same line based on 200000 datapoints but the pdf-size is significantly reduced. You can imagine that when this would be done via the transformation option a long lasting script would be needed for each line to reduce the number of datapoints shown. Hence, the plotting within the report and the actualisation of data would need very long.

Since a while DIAdem optimizes the size of exported PDF-files in a related way as it is suggested here. In principle the PDF-file is exported in a very high resolution, so you can display it in a reader with a very high zoom value (e. g. 6000 %) to look into details of your data. If you have a huge dataset, this could lead in fact to a bigger file size, if data points could be displayed because the high PDF-resolution. But in general, DIAdem only saves information in a PDF-file which is really necessary - but with a high resolution.

  • Reducing pdf size: How can I reduce a pdf document for MAIL?

I am having trouble getting a mail pdf attachment to be accepted by my server. I am looking for a way to reduce the digital size of the pdf (report) so that it will be a size acceptable to my server (tds).  How can that be done?  What steps should I take?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The Quartz Filter in Finder might help.
Open the pdf file in Preview.
Then File, Save As, (Format PDF) checkmark the Quartz Filter, and select Reduce File Size.
In my test example, a 4 page .pdf file of a newspaper article including lots of text and two large color photos was reduced from 573KB to 147KB.
But do test the results first, by giving the test file a new name instead of saving 'over' the original.
The text remained sharp, but the included photos became noticably pixelated at 100% size.

  • Reduce physical size of image with minimal quality loss

    Hello,
I have to fit high res, high quality, images behind a presentation frame, which is only about 800x600. Everytime i reduce the high res images to fit behind the frame, even with bicubic sharper on, the reduction in quality is really bad. Is there anyway i can maximise quality when reducing the dimensions of the image?
    Any help much appreciated...

    Hi Ed,
What approximate sizes are you starting from? My hunch is that you are expecting too much detail to remain in an 800 X 600 which is pretty small. As far as I know the bicubic algorithm is the best for reducing images that Photoshop has ever produced.
You might try an experiment. After shrinking your image duplicate the background layer in the layers palette. On the duplicate layer run Filter > Other > High Pass and set the radius to 0.5. Then change the blend mode of the High Pass layer to Overlay. You may find that you like the subtle sharpening without artifacts.

  • How to reduce pdf size through c# in winrt app?

    Hi,
I am creating an app in window 8 which will reduce the pdf size. But I am not getting how I can achieve this task. I searched a lot on google but not getting any suitable answer. I heard that Acrobat has sdk that reduces the pdf size. Can you guide me how I can get that sdk and how can I use it in window 8 app?

The Acrobat SDK is an interface to Adobe Reader (which cannot reduce file sizes) and to Adobe Acrobat.
However, neither one can be installed on Windows RT, nor used from a metro app.

  • Reduce PDF size

How can I reduce the size of my pdf?  The reduce size option is grey out, is there any other way to reduce a large pdf?

Were the versions split up @ version 6 Bill ? I stand to be corrected if so; but my memory serves that this wasn't until version 7 ...
Update: You're correct Bill and I stand corrected ! However both versions have the optimzer, yay ! Source via Planet PDF. Apparently it's called "Reduce File Size" in the Standard version.
Acrobat 6 First Look - PDF Optimizer
    By Richard Crocker
Both Acrobat Standard and Professional include a menu item (File, Reduce File Size) for reducing the file size of the current document. Professional includes additional new optimization tools.
