Reducing Project Size, Removing unused media

I just finished a project and now I'd like to reduce the size to free up some hard drive space. I'd like to keep the captured media files that were actually used in case there are any changes from the client, but delete the ones that were not. Is there an easy way to do this? Anyone have any good strategies when a project is finished.
Everything was captured using Log and capture, so I could reimport if necessary, but I had 20hrs of footage and only used 30minutes, so there's definitely some that wasn't touched.
Thanks,
Duane

It is safe to use the media manager...
Check your hard drive for space...for 30 mins means you'll need at least another 6.5 GB of free space... make it 8GB to be safe...
In media manager (NOTE : also read the manual carefully) use the COPY option...
Using COPY, ensure the 'duplicate selected items and place into a new project' box IS ticked, this will set up a completely new project and folder, containing ONLY EVERYTHING you have in your 30 min sequence... and will not delete or change anything from the origonal... If you go to the new folder you'll see another folder called 'media'... this will contain all the clips etc.
Then, open up the new COPIED project, watch it to check it's ok... if it's cool (which it should be) then you now have a completely independant project that is nothing to do with the origonal... and contains only used media.
Then, open up final cut pro docs>capture scratch> 'project name' and you can simply delete ALL your old media manually, knowing that everything you need is now in a new folder elsewhere....
Of course, this only works if you have that little bit of extra space left on your drive for the new media to be copied to... but i find it's the safest, and easiest way of removing unused media.

  • Removing unused media from Sequence cause crashing

I am trying to remove unused media from projects prior to archiving to free up/clean up finished projects. Each project I have tried to do this with I am having the program close during process. Then when I try to reopen project it will not open and keeps crashing. Firstly are these project now corrupt, and can I still archive them somehow or get the project back?? Please help as the projects I have tried to do this with aren't of huge importance but I do need to try to clean up and archive others that are.

  • Removing unused media files?

I tend to move slides between presentations often, and as a result I have multiple copies of media files (movies, photos, etc.) all in the presentation package. Often, if a slide is deleted, the media contained on that slide is still present in the package. Does anyone know of an easy way to remove unused media files? I'm doing this to help keep the file size down, as it's getting seriously unwieldy. Thanks

Not that I know of...I miss one option that some graphic programs have... collect on output. It will collect all linked files and place them in the same folder of you finial file. I wish a lot of programs had this function. Would save time hunting down associated files that you can't remember where you put them...
    I know this doesn't help you...sorry.

I imported a bunch of video into an "event" in iMovie. I ended up only using a small amount for my movie. Can I trash all the un-used footage in an event? If so, how do I do that? Can it be done per event?

    Hi Hans,
This is a similar problem as in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2129273
I suggested adding a reelnumber as well, whch is usually the cure for this problem.
Obviously not for you as well for the poster of the other thread. So I think the only way will be the way I described in the other thread.
I'm now thinking that maybe the problem lies in the fact you exported from MPEG-STreamClip as DV-stream, which is not OK for FCP.
Next time export from MPEG streamclip as Quicktime Movie with the DV-settings. (given your name, I think in your case it would be PV PAL)
    To go short for now:
Export the timeline as a Quicktime Move (File > Export > Export Quicktime File)
After that delete your original large file. Only problem is that there's no connection anymore to the original DVD...

  • How do I decrease the size (remove unused space/padding) of the Foxfire browser header?

Using a new install of Ubuntu 10.04 there is too much space between lines in the Foxfire header, so the browser window takes up excessive space. How can I resize the header to use less space between lines?

If you use a custom theme then it is possible that there is a problem with that theme or another extension is causing that problem.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).<br />
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Removing unused items / optimizing file size

I have a large swf that is embedded in Director as a sprite.  I now want to put it onto a web page, so file size is critical.  Is there a way to remove unused library items when publishing so that file size is reduced?  Is there another way to compress the swf so it is much smaller?  The current size is about 25 Mb.  What about streaming the swf?  I'm not talking about streaming video or audio, just any Flash content.  Any tricks for speeding the process up so that the user doesn't have a long wait before the swf starts?
In Director, there is a way to right-click on a cast member and choose "find in score".  If something isn't found it means that it either is not used in the movie or is implemented through code.  Is there a similar way in Flash of detecting unused items or automatically eliminating them when publishing?
    Thanks,
    Brian

all used assets would have to be downloaded eventually but it's a much nicer user experience to promptly see something useful on-stage, sooner rather than later.  background sound, for example, need not be downloaded when a page first loads and should download after items more useful to the user have already downloaded.
under file/publish settings/flash/tick generate size report you can see what's bloating your swf.

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

  • How do I reduce the size of my project?

I keep getting a message that says "error: out of memory" when I double click on my sequence and it has been suggested I might be able to fix it if I reduce the size of my project. Currently I'm at about 200mb.
Does anyone know if sequences are responsible for a lot of project memory? How can I best reduce the project size?
I'm editing a film and I'm only about 30 minutes in.
    Thanks --- Aaron

one option is to make a managed version of your project. You select the sequence or sequences you want and choose 'manage project' and it will create a project where each clip will have a handle size of your choice (the smaller the handles the smaller the project size). This consolidates the sequence/s you have to just the footage you are using. From this point you can import anything you want and continue working on it as a regular project.
Be sure you have enough memory to handle the new files.

  • The estimated project size is larger than the target media chosen

I am at a loss for trying to author a project using Adobe Encore.  I first tried to author the project using version CS2.  When attempting to export I received the following message:
"The estimated project size is larger than the target media chosen.  While this is an estimate, the project may fail to build."
I have authored hundereds of projects in the past, but have never received that message before.  I first thought that the problem was with the version of Encore I was using, but I received the exact same error when trying to author the project with Encore CS5.
The project itself has one menu, a motion menu, and one video file.  The video file last 152 minutes, and I was attempting to export that to a dual layer DVD.  I have since tried exporting the file using Adobe Premier CS5.5 using a variety of settings.  I am trying to export it to a DVD-2 file, with the match soure attributes being set to the highest setting.  The setting on the main concept MPEG encoder is set to 5. I have tried exporting the file using both constant and varaible bit rates.
When I recently exported the file using a contant bit rate of 6.5, I still had 650.4 MB remaining on my Encore project.  I still received the same error about the project size, and so I am thinking that something else is wrong.
I have even exported the video file as an uncompressed AVI file, and then tried encoding it again using both Adobe Premier CS5.5 and the Adobe Encoder.  I still get the same error message about file size.
Any help and/or suggestions about how to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Using the Imgburn product worked! It also helped me figure out what the real problem was...
As it turns out, some single-layer DVDs had been mixed in with my dual-layer DVDs. I feel very foolish about this.  All of my discs are printable, and so there is no indication written as far as what their capacity is on them.
Encore can be a bit vague in identifying a problem such as this. For example, I can set the settings to plan for a dual-layer disc, and it will display a graphical status indicator with that capacity in mind. When I saw the original file message error I honestly believed that there was a problem with the encoded file instead of the type of disc itself.
Imgburn instantly displayed the discrepancy in the type of disc I had loaded and the needed capacity for the type of project that I was trying to create.
    Thanks again for your help!

  • How do I reduce the size of all elements in a Motion project proportionately and simultaneously?

I have created a complex Motion project with many elements.  Does anyone know how to reduce the size of all elements proportionately and simultaneously in order to shrink this down to a corner logo? Thanks

    Sure.
In the Layers pane,  IF all of your layers are already in a single Group (if you're really a beginner, then you probably just have the one group), all you need to do is select the Group "layer" containing your design elements and clone it (type - k) -- you'll get a new layer in a new group if it's a top level group of the project called Clone Layer.  (If you have more than one group, select all of them --- however, if there is an FCPX Placeholder-drop-zone-looking-layer with a label like Effect Source or Title Background, don't select that -- you'll need to command-click select just the layers that make up your logo design). [You can alternately select *everything* and command click the layers you do not want to include in the Clone.]
Creating a clone of anything in no way changes that object or objects.  A clone is like a composite viewer for objects/layers -- like a tv screen is to broadcast signals...
Uncheck the Cloned Group (or selected objects - if still selected, unchecking one will uncheck all of the selected layers) to inactivate it (this will not affect the clone visibility.)
    Select the Clone Layer.
Use the Properties > Transform tools to scale and position the clone layer (changing the blend mode to something like hard light, overlay or similar, and adjusting the opacity makes for a nice "watermark" [corner logo]).

  • HT4114 Reduce file size when projecting onto large screen?

    Hi,
Does "Reduce File Size" reduce the quality of an image or video that is being projected from my iPad 3 onto a 10ft screen via VGA adaptor?  I'm teaching a film class, and multiple film clips and stills seem to cause Keynote to grind to a near halt.   We can't really get the room adequately dark, so I really don't want to reduce image quality any further.
Thanks in advance for any help suggestions!

Gretchen ~ I don't know the answer, but can say that I know of only one process that reduces file size without reducing image quality. Perhaps others will chip in here with more suggestions...
The free "JPEGmini" reduces the file size of JPEG images without reducing their dimensions or perceivable quality. The Web version allows you to upload and downsize one image at a time. The Mac App version avoids uploading and allows you to downsize up to 20 images per day for free.

*HOW TO DELETE UNUSED MEDIA FROM HARD DRIVE IN FINAL CUT PRO.* Keywords: disk disc drive space remove compressor
    SUMMARY:
Say your original clip is 10 gigs, you can use only what you need and delete the rest from your hard drive. I know people on the forums say to just buy another hard drive, NO! It took 2 days to figure out but here it is!!! Email me if needed at [email protected]
    QUESTION:
I captured 1 hour of video at a time and now want to delete from my hard drive all the parts I don’t want to use. I have 300GB of junk on my hard drive and I only want to use a few scenes using a few megabytes, so that I'll get most of my 300GB back!!!!
    ANSWER:
In final cut on Mac, click on one small clip (to get familiar with process), go to “file”, “export”, then “using compressor”. This will open compressor software. Your file will open in the left top window. Then you need to batch the job or jobs. IMPORTANT: I’ve also solved the Compressor problem when you press “submit” to a batch and it states “Cluster: None”. Search forum for “In compressor you experience what I have”.

Part of the problem could lie in the fact it's an imovie project coming into FCP, wouldn't rule that out. Second my be the terms you use and what you expect to happen. For example, a subclip is just a smaller clip subbed from a larger clip. It has nothing to do with media management. But you can media manage a subclip and delete the unused media.
Try this (be sure to back up the original clip first). take a long clip into the viewer, make an IN and OUT duration of like 30 frames and then subclip that, Modify > Make Subclip. a new subclip will appear in the browser with a torn clip icon and the name Subclip. Right click on the subclip and choose Media Manager.... Check the Delete unused media from duplicated clip. As you toggle that the green Modified bar at the top change from the full clip size to a tiny modified size. If it does not then one of two things ... user error or the system is screwed up. That's the easiest way to test media manager.

  • Question on Blu ray image size output and reducing the size

    Hi
I have been using encore for blu ray projects which is been proving very helpful. However recently i have had a issue with output size on files. Normally Encore gives me it's estimate that it will fill the disc nicely and provides a image/folder which is about 17-20GB (using 25GB disc) but now out of the blue it's files sizes it outputs has been 24.8GB which technically is less than 25GB but as anyone knows who burns to media, the disc doesn't actually have 25GB of space (something like 23,8 or something, i can't remember without checking). Anyway of course this is a issue because my output size is contantly now coming up to be about 600MB - 1GB over the disc actual size, i figured Encore normally compresses files to fit considering i have burned similar amounts/size media before and never had a issue.
Anyway my issue is the slightly larger file size, i figured the easiest way to reduce the blu ray output size was to of course play with the transcode settings, which usually are set to the default settings for Blu ray (the quality preset is called something like "1280x720p 50 High Quality MPEG-2") so of course i thought to lower the bitrate a little just for a test, so i did just that and cut the default bit rate from 25[Mbs] to 20, i didn't want to lower it too much as it was a test to see what i could save for file size. Anyway so i re-transcoded the file and built another image, sadly the image size oddly enough came out as 26.something GB... so it actually grew in size by reducing the file bitrate which put me at a loss. I was wondering what common ways i could use to lower this file size just by a few hundred MB or up to 1GB in this case without having to remove content from the disc (it would be a waste to not only seperate the content but to use a whole disc for a leftover 600mb-1gb project). I of course want to keep quality as high as possible but i understand when trying to reduce size quality has to normally be hit in these situations so i can deal with a slight loss of quality. I have been browsing the forums here and though some topics seem similar they have the issue of file sizes coming out as 40GB+.
Now im no genius with Encore, normally as said the file size is always between 17-20GB as i figure encore was using a "fit to disc" type feature but because the output size is technically below 25gb but not actually below enough to burn i was wondering 2 things:
    1) is it possible to make encore it's self shrink these files a little more, lowering the target size down by 1GB would do wonders but only option i have seen is to have a 25GB disc or DL disc with no option to customize the output size (forcefully lowering it by 1GB).
    2) because i imagine the above can't be done i was wondering how to go about reducing the size by around 1GB or so, i don't need like 10GB freeing up so it's only a small amount, as said this is a issue i have had with the last few projects i made and the size varies from needing 600MB - 1GB (it doesn't usually exceed needing 1GB free space... besides when i lowered the bit rate which increased size a lot). In the past i always just cut the bitrate of files down a little (never by lots but enough to free space up) but clearly that failed my test so im at a loss of how to reduce file size without a huge loss in quality.
For the record i have already produced the file as both a image file and a folder and both have the same issue.
    Extra info on the project:
It contains 4 Menu's, 13 video files which vary in lengh from short ones at about 5mintues to longer ones which the largest is about 20minutes. I commonly burn this number of video files/space with fine quality and no issue so i would rather not take files from the project.
quality preset details are defaultly as said above set to "1280x720p 50 High quality MPEG-2" settings, i am not on my computer with encore at the moment so i can't post full specifics right now but if you have encore handy you should be able to check.
Tried reducing bit rate but that increased overall size, the actual plan was to hopefully lower the bit rate to around 21 [mbs] (from 25) and then do that for multiple (or all) files until it fitted but after it increased the size i lost hope there, it said the estimated file size (on the individual video) would drop by around 300-400mb  but that didn't work.
I have tried both folder and iso which always come out the same size.
Basically my main question/problem is any suggestion to drop the file size by up to 1GB without taking items out the project or a real high loss in quality (i don't mind small loss though as i can apply whatever solution to all files which should help).
Any suggestions what i can try? as you probably gather im not a genius when it comes to this stuff but i tried including what i thought is relevent.

    Hi and thank you for the reply;
one problem i seem to be having when reducing the bitrate is the file size is oddly increasing from 24.8GB to 26.4GB, i can't really figure this one out as well it's having the oppisite effect. I checked the "streams" folder on output and decided to compare automatic transcoding to manual lowered bitrate and im not too sure where the increased file size is going, i found which video file it was causing the issue, all videos files range or average around 1.6GB each but one file was taking 4.5GB, after lowering that files bitrate it cut it down to 2GB which was of course saving me 2GB from the old file but the overall size had increased which was odd. Seems the other files are all the same so it hasn't tried improving them (so it seems) so i can't make ends of why the size is increasing.
I will try playing with the source file to see if i can do anything that way, if not i will try transcoding in premiere (i have had troubles with this before so i try to avoid it).
Oh and yes i was using Automatic.
Anyway i will see if editing the file outside might help first and see how that works. Thanks again for the reply.

  • Removing Unused Files

There are about 250 files listed in my Unused Files report.
    1. Will removing them reduce the size of my output folders?
    2. Must I delete them one at a time from the Project Manager, or is there a faster way?
    - Shawn

They can only be removed through Windows Explorer as the fact that they are unused files means they are not in Project Manager.
