Reducing RAM

I'm trying to create a pull up banner for print (80x200cm)
Every time I try to make it my computer freezes due to photoshop using huge amounts of RAM. Can anyone suggest the file settings I should be using in order to create this please?
Thank you

We can't know. You have not provided any system information or e.g. your current performance settings for all memory related stuff.

  • How to reduce RAM has reserveed by hardware?

Hp Probook 4520s. I add RAM from 2 to 4 Gb. Resource monitor indicate that about 1Gb RAM has reserveed by hardware.
How to reduce this reserved RAM?
BIOS installed last version F.20 8 сен 2011...
OS Windows 7 Home Basic say 4Gb and 2.84 available/

Hardware reserved memory is memory used by your hardware such as the video card. You shouldn't worry about this memory usage.

  • Reducing RAM Usage

Is there anyway to reduce or even devote all of my computer's RAM to one ongoing proccess? Specifically a new game I've purchased.
I'm asking because my comp's got the minimum requirement of RAM and VRAM for the game. Yet even with everthing else quit, the graphic qualities turned way down and even the back ground music turned off, it still frequently freezes.

Most game manufacturers give unrealistic minimum specs for their products. Yes, they will run, but as you have found out they will not run well. The single best thing you can do is increase the amount of ram you have and if you really want better performance then you may want to consider a more up to date graphics card as well.
There is no way to actually instruct the OS to devote all of the ram to a particular function. The system is designed in such a way as to request ram as it needs it and then put frequently used instructions in ram so that they can be accessed quickly. If you are lacking ram then it uses the hard drive which is far slower than ram. Most games require at least double what the manufacturer suggests. At least that has been my experience. Even then, some games simply run slow.
As your hardware specifications are not listed it is very difficult to be of any specific help. Knowing which game you are trying to run would be helpful also. Different games allow various degrees of control over the graphics and audio of the game.

  • How to reduce ram usage in firefox to bring its memory footprint as close to navigator's as possible .

So yes , I still use navigator and for my awesome albeit not too powerful laptop , it is a godsend , never going beyond 200 MB on the ram usage . But the tinkerer in me wants to know if its possible to fiddle around in firefox and make it as light as navigator cuz lets face it , firefox may be good but 900MB ram usage is just too much .

I am trying to close some unnecessary program
To see more available memory, you need to get in the habit of QUIT-ing unnecessary Applications. If you simply close their windows, they stay active in the background, waiting to be re-activated.
Mavericks and later use RAM Memory differently, and it is expected behavior to see all memory in use. Use the Activity Monitor > Memory display to check your memory pressure. Green is good.

  • ~500 MB "active or wired" RAM in 10.5 - can I reduce this?

    Hello!
I have a 15" Powerbook G4, with 1 GB of RAM, running 10.5.1. Previously, I had it running 10.4.11. Leopard is very nice, but it's suffering far more instability than Tiger - simply because I keep running out of RAM.
Under Tiger, a general rule of thumb was that just after startup, and without any open applications (except activity monitor), there would br ~60 MB of "Wired" RAM, and about 100 MB of "Active" RAM. These values are those given by Activity monitor. The "kernel_task" process rarely took up more than ~80 MB, even with a dozen applications running.
Under Leopard, just after startup and with only activity monitor open, I have roughly 150 MB "wired" and roughly 350 MB "active". "kernel_task" usually eats 100-150 MB, even without any running apps. I never have more than about 600 MB free - and usually run between 100-200 MB free with only iTunes and Safari open. While running backups (with .Mac Backup 3.1.2), I've had OS X report more than 3 MILLION page outs! That's a 4 GB swap file! This is proving to be a tremendous slowdown, negating all of Leopard's speed increases. In addition, many applications crash as they run out of RAM - I'll have an application crash every few hours or so under Leopard, while I'd go weeks without a crash under Tiger. Unlike in Tiger, this isn't isolated to ram-hungry applications either - just about anything and everything has crashed when RAM is tight.
Is there anything that I can do that will reduce the amount of RAM used by the system? Are there applications/processes/plugins/etc that OS X loads that are not required, that I can stop? I'd really rather not downgrade to Tiger, but it may prove necessary.
I'd like to drop a 1 GB RAM card into the PB - to get 1.5 GB of total RAM, but I don't have the ~$120 or so to spend on a RAM card in the near future. Anything I can do to reduce RAM usage and speed up the Powerbook would be very helpful.
    Thanks,
    -Dan

I wonder where you get your RAM prices. I found this at Datamem.com - 1 GB DIMM for $69 w/lifetime warranty.
Face it if you plan to use Leopard your memory needs will at least double. That's partly why Apple specifies 512 MBs as the minimum for Leopard versus the 256 MB minimum for Tiger.
If you're suffering from instability then it's possible you haven't sufficient free space on your hard drive. You should plan to leave not less than 15 percent of the drive's capacity free at all times. Add 8 GBs to that if you regularly burn DVDs.
Be sure your system isn't corrupt. Repair the hard drive and permissions. Use third-party utilities to clear the system, user, and font caches. Be sure the Unix maintenance scripts are being run on schedule.
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.2 is Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.

  • 4.5 GB of RAM at start up?

I need a way to reduce RAM usage, please, even I prefer to rollback/downgrade to Mavericks, if possible.

Don't worry about the RAM usage. OS X is based on BSD UNIX. Most UNIX based systems will take all the RAM they can get to help enhance performance. If you're looking in Activity Monitor, the important measure to pay attention to is Memory Pressure. As long as that's green, you're doing fine.
As for the antivirus... honestly... just remove it. Don't waste the resources on it.
There are no known viruses in the wild that can infect OS X. There are adware, trojans, and other malware, but they generally require user intervention to install in the first place and most antivirus software won't catch them anyway.

  • Wallstreet and Tiger: no OS X 8GB "limit", issues if 512MB RAM installation

Since I felt that I could improve the performance of my [Wallstreet with Tiger|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1390427&tstart=30], I decided to give a try to the break of the 8GB barrier as already reported in this forum so taking the occasion to substitute the 4200rpm 80GB disk with a 5400rpm one.
Again, acknowledgements to jpl, Tinkerman and others I do not recall for the helpful messages in the forum showing, if not else, that all this is possible. Unavoidable acknowledgements to the XPF developer too, of course.
I must admit that, while this time I was expecting a rapid installation after the method set out last time, actually I spent hours with any kind of issues of OS 9 either not installing or not booting even if from a disk cloned from the past working one. I was starting to think to some failed areas in the new disk but it appeared working in any other circumstance so eventually I realised that I was operating not only without the original CPU (Sonnet Crescendo 500MHz G4) but with 512MB of RAM and someone else already reported this as potential source of problems. Actually I realised it when, during one of the numerous serial attempts, the PowerBook remained with a black screen and suddenly produced the frightening "breaking glass sound", i.e. issues with the memory. Well, that was thrilling since I did not realise immediately what it was and I never heard it before...
So this time the method was the following:
    - old disk removed from the Wallstreet and installed in a Firewire enclosure
    - created three disk images on another recent PB G4 from the three partitions of the old disk (OS9, OS X, documents)
    - new disk in FireWire enclosure, connected to the recent PB G4
    - created two partitions in Utility Disk: 1GB HFS+, therestGB HFS+ Journaled
    - installed new disk in Wallstreet
    - reduced Wallstreet RAM to 256MB
    - installed OS 9 from CD (and upgraded till 9.2.2) in the first 1GB partition together with XPF 4
    - removed the disk and reinstalled in the FW enclosure
    - cloned the old OS X disk image from the recent PB to the second big partition of the new disk
    - reinstalled on the Wallstreet, started in OS 9, set XPF options as last time (Use Old NDRVs), boot in OS X
    - copied all content of former third partition for documents in Documents
    - restored the RAM to 512MB
Therefore the result is OS 9 in the first 1GB partition and OS X in the second 73GB and something partition. XPF mildly complained about the disk not having been formatted on OS 9 but setting OS 9 as helper was enough to satisfy it.
I am not 100% sure, say 95, but I have the feeling that, even after reducing the RAM to 256MB, the method to clone the old OS 9 partition to the new one did not work in the sense that the Wallstreet remained stuck at the question mark. Definitely it did not work with 512MB.
    Summary (nothing new, just confirmations)
    - OS X does not require to be installed in the first partition
    - others (Tinkerman?) reported that this partition has to start in the first 8GB and not being included
    - OS X partition can be more than 8GB
    - watch out the RAM amount during installation (here it worked with 256MB but others reported 192 as maximum)
Hope this will help someone else.
    Regards,
    Giulio

Another installation procedure (still, similar to the previous one).
    - reduce RAM to 256MB (some says 192 is better but now for me it was not feasible)
    - with OS 9 CD: partition the disk,1GB/around 75GB, both HFS+ (there were few hiccups and I had to try more than once since the initialisation was failing and eventually I got a sort of ghost 5KB partition "for free")
    - install OS 9 from CD to the 1GB partition
    - update OS 9 to 9.2.2 through the installers
    - mount disk in external enclosure connected to another system: initialise the around 75GB partition as HFS+ Journaled and cloned the old OS X partition to such partition (or install it for the ones that do not have such OS X partition ready)
    - reinstall the disk into the Wallstreet and set up XPF (Use Old NDRVs); curious enough, here for the first time it said it could not boot from the second big OS X partition since it was "extending beyond the 8GB" or something similar still just choosing OS 9 as helper solved the issue
    - restore the maximum RAM
    - reboot in OS X
The OS 9 installation was done with the USB PCMCIA inserted and the USB mouse inserted in it. I do not know whether this was the solution (since also the previous time I selected all the USB additional extensions during OS 9 installation) but this time at the 9.1 update the mouse was recognised, not before, and it kept working since.
The Wallstreet just boots in OS X each and every time unless instructed to do differently through XPF.
The magnetic sensor issue still occasionally shows (apparently it needs "some time" or the Wallstreet just boots/wakes up nicely if just switched off or set to sleep). I will try to create some magnetic shield as already reported somewhere. Alternatively removing the two bays and waiting some five minutes or so does the trick.
What remains a bit unclear to me is the use of a magnet close to a hard disk, something I would consider the source of all evils if not properly done. I will study more, test and hopefully solve the issue.
    Thanks,
    Giulio

  • P55-GD65 - Available RAM Suddently Changed

Sorry for double posting this, but I figure I shouldn't have hijacked the thread I originally posted this in.
My problem can best be described as a sudden unexpected change in the available RAM. I have 2x2GB sticks that had previously been recognized at 4GB available, but this morning my machine will only POST with 2GB available. Both sticks are recognized and I can view SPD info, but during POST, only 2GB is reported.
I built my machine about 3 weeks ago and everything was working great, booted first try and no errors in memtest+ or LinX or Prime95. I have been running just fine since then. I have MSI P55-GD65, Core i5 750, DDR3 2x2GB GSkill Trident 2000MHz RAM.
This past weekend I decided to mildly overclock, I upped the bclk to 160 and adjusted the DIMM voltage to 1.6 according to the RAM spec. I tested and tested this config and everything seemed stable. I have been using the machine to play games and things with no problems.
I go to resume from hibernate this morning and the machine hangs. I restart and I notice BIOS is only showing 2GB during POST. I check out the BIOS settings and it sees the 2 DIMMS, but still only shows 2GB. I boot into Windows 7 x64 and it shows 4GB (2GB Useable). Previously all 4GB were recognized and useable just fine. This may be relevant, I don't know, but I started a long video transcoding job before bed last night. Presumably this job finished and the machine went into hibernate.
I reset all settings back to default, thinking maybe my overclock wasn't as stable as I thought, but no change. Even before I reset the clocks, I tried upping the DIMM voltage, the VTT voltage, reducing RAM frequency. Nothing.
I figure maybe I need to upgrade the BIOS, as I am currently running v1.5 and latest is 1.8. I download the 1.8 image to a flash drive and try to use M-Flash to boot the BIOS image off the drive, but BIOS hangs with a repeating BEEP when I try that.
Then I noticed something very odd. When I boot up with the flash drive plugged into a USB port, BIOS reports 4GB on POST. Without the drive, 2GB on POST.
As an absolute last resort I will reseat the CPU, but after the flash drive behaviour, I am not sure it is a CPU pin-contact issue. When I get home from work I am going to flash to v1.8 BIOS and see if that helps. If not, I will reseat all DIMMS and try that. If the problem persists, I will try DIMMS individually and in different slots and see. I will also try a CMOS clear, before and after the BIOS update.
Is there anything else I should try before reseating the CPU? What if I just wiggle the heatsink? If it all possible, I would like to avoid having to clean up the TIM and reapply, it was a big pain on my heatsink.
    Thanks,
    --MrAnt--

    GSkill Trident 2x2GB DDR3 2000 - F3-16000CL9D-4GBTD (Running @ 1333MHz 9-9-9-24)
WD Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB HDD
    Corsair CMPSU-750TX 750W
    Sapphire Radeon 5850 1GB

Have been monitoring very closely and the issue has not cropped up again.
I have been running everything at stock since the incident. As I am really not sure what caused the problem, I am a little hesitant to overclock again. Though I do want to get more performance from my RAM and CPU as they can both be increased by a fair amount.
I have also disabled hibernation in Windows 7, as the issue occurred at some point while the machine was in hibernation state. It went into hibernation with 4GB and woke up with only 2GB. I realize this does not mean hibernation caused the problem, but could have played a factor.
I think I will slowly restore settings back to how had them before the problem occurred and I will be sure to test more thoroughly this time.
    Thanks for help and advice

  • MSI P35 Neo-F (MS-7360): Computer randomly freezes while playing games

    Hi there,
I have reached the end of my technical knowledge right now and I'm not even sure if this area of the forum is appropriate. The problem:
While playing higher-end games like Crysis 2, Anno 1404, Mass Effect 2 etc. my computer randomly freezes and the last few milliseconds of sound are being looped on my speakers (kind of like a buzzing sound).
By "freezing" I mean that my computer becomes unresponsive to any action other than pressing the Reset-Button or holding down the Power-Up-Button (no reaction to Ctrl+Alt+Del, Alt+F4, Alt+Tab, no mouse movement... you get it).
There's no exact timing as to when these freezes occur. The fastest freeze happened after less than a minute of playing a game, slowes one (just today after switching to my newer case with better cooling) took about 2 hours.
This freeze only occurs while my System is under load. No freezes while browsing the web, using office programs, listening to music or watching videos.
    System Specs:
        Mainboard: MSI P35 Neo-F (MSI-7360)
        CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @2.4GHz
        RAM: 4x 1GB DDR2-800 Corsair XMS2
Graphics: Gainward GeForce GTX 560 Ti, 1GB GDDR5 VRAM
PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 620W (upgraded from Xilence XP600, 600W)
New CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 13 Pro (upgraded from OEM Intel Boxed Cooler)
New Case: Zalman Z9 Plus w/ 4x 120 mm Fans (Upgraded from a Case with only 1x 250mm side Fan)
        2 Western Digital HDD (1x 2TB, 1x320 GB)
1 DVD Reader/Burner (unimportant for that error I guess)
        OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
        2 Screens: 1x 24" Asus VS248H and 1x 21" LG Flatron Wide W2240T
Since this error is bugging me for quite a while now and since this is not the first forum I'm trying to get help from, here's a list of steps i already took to get rid of it, obviously to no good use:
reinstalled games where the freeze occurred
updated all Drivers (including cleaning old versions in safe mode; also tried older drivers)
        updated BIOS to v1.A0
        Reinstalled Windows
bought new Case and CPU Cooler to improve Air Flow/Cooling
checked Seating of all components (took out, cleaned, reapplied thermal grease where neccessary, re-inserted)
cleaned old case of dust (obviously no problem in the new case, which is 2 days "old")
ran 7 sequences of Memtes86+ without any errors
ran Prime95 without any errors for about 45 Minutes
ran Furmark for 15 Minutes under full load (burn-in test) without any problems, even though my graphics card hit the 100°C frequency-cut level
ran Furmark and Prime95 simultaneously without any problems
took records of component temperatures and system voltages without noticing anything unusual (at least not after i switched to the newer PSU, which is about 1 Month old - yet didn't resolve the problem)
tested with cyclic removal of 1 RAM device to further rule out RAM malfunction
tested with only 2 RAM devices in dual channel mode (Slots 1 and 3)
tried to reduce RAM clock (800 MHz --> 667 MHz) to no avail
checked S.M.A.R.T. values of HDDs, no issues reported
        tested without any background programs
raised/lowered voltages to RAM, CPU and Chipset in BIOS to increase logic circuit stability/decrease heat production
I need to mention: After I transferred my system to the new case, i was able to play longer than average compared to my old case. So I am guessing that improper cooling was part of the problem, yet improving cooling obviously didn't resolve it.
Since these freezes are really annoying and nobody could help me resolve this so far, I'm hoping to find some new ways of narrowing down the problem or even getting rid of it here.
    Regards
    Sebb

Lets be realistic. A system with a 560TI is recommended to have a around 31Amps under full load, a CX500 would be sufficient.
Have you monitored your CPU and memory utilisation ?
As suggested before, test the GPU in another computer to see if the behaviour is the same.
Whew, I thought for a second there that my common sense had left me when I saw that 60-Amp-Post ^^
Yes, I monitored CPU and RAM usage, there is no recognizeable pattern to be seen and it almost never happens under full load.
I will see if a friend of mine can test my GPU on his computer, and I will test it underclocked right away.
Though one more question regarding that: Should I only underclock GPU Core Clock or both Core and RAM clock?

  • [Suggestion] Gaming Edition

I have a huge suggestion.....  Windows has attracted some of the most widespread users to date ranging from students to government business users.  What I have noticed is a new trend of users that are moving in a new direction with Windows by using
custom api's, user interfaces, and hardware capabilities.  I'm talking about the GAMING COMMUNITY!!!  We have watched DirectX emerge and blossom over the years.  Now AMD has developed Mantle, NVidia develops their custom version of DirectX that
delivers high performance improvements, and we have the HSA Working Group, delivering new unified capabilities by allowing the motherboard to interact with the APU and RAM.  Not to count out Intel, but we now have XMP and AMP overclocking for motherboards.
We are not just playing crossword puzzles, but today's culture is playing Steam games like NBA 2K15, Ultra Street Fighter 4, Darksiders 2, and new PC games that are rivaling if not are visually better than consoles.  This new culture of gaming are
now using 144 hertz monitors to run the most solid games.  What I see is a ton of "tweaks" done to the operating system that just disables settings, services, and applications, which might cause some instability.  Why not create an edition
of Windows that allows the gaming community to take full advantage of DirectX without disabling or tweaking.  An image that does not use Virtual Machines, additional plugins, enterprise services, or added domain capabilities.  These capabilities
could reduce RAM at the consumer level and would allow the hardware developers to take full advantage of Windows.  Just a suggestion.
    Erick

Yes of course.  I think the only reason I halted in this area is because I see that the Technical Preview has the DirectX 11 platform, so Windows 8.1 really accelerates in this area today.  Currently I had video driver issues (not being able to
install on AMD), so I switched to an NVIDIA GPU and will resume testing soon.  This is because I have to wait for AMD.
What my suggestion meant is that I know Microsoft worked really hard on the next version of DirectX.  Another culture specific item is the use of consoles and Steam clients.  After logging in, most people would like to just start playing the games,
not having to check email, Facebook, or something web facing.  My suggestion is a version or option/mode of Windows that allows for drivers, patches, and security updates without the use of the main UI.  A user can either have a custom UI or a full
screen Microsoft app that will run after logging in while retaining the ability to log off.  I have done this on previous versions of Windows and more system RAM becomes available.  Maybe an option for a Game Mode within Windows that allows most
resources to focus on the games being played.
I will say this so far, I like the combination of the live tiles and the start menu, which eliminates the confusion.  I still see some Windows 8.1 in there (right-click on the Start button to shut it down), but I definitely like it.

  • Win98SE or WINME hang on startup with 875P - Resolved !

I asked in this forum if WinME can manage IDE native mode - nobody answered !
But now, after long debugging and searching through Microsoft knowlege bases I found on Intel homepage the answer: (enhanced by Intel is the same as native from MSI)
    http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d875pbz/bz_windows.htm
The ATA/IDE option can be configured as either "Enhanced (default)" or "Legacy" in the BIOS configuration. Windows* 98SE and Windows* Me operating systems do not support Enhanced mode IDE/Serial ATA resources for more than four devices. If the ATA/IDE option is set to Enhanced mode, the operating installation will not be able to recognize the drive, and the installation will fail.
875P is compatible to Win98SE and WinME - but with these restrictions !!!
Thanks to the MSI spezialists for your great help.     haha

there are other issues with win 98se and msi 875p neo,
these consist of 1. non sound playback, or patchy missing or fast speed playback through win 98se and me.media players.
    2. no ht function.
    3.reduced ram allowance
    4.hdd only 120gig with latest 98 updates.(37gig without)
5.fat not ntfs, so your drive is displayed to the whole world which means hackers may target you.
    6. agp8 is not recognised by some drivers.
i did install 98 on my system and did not suffer any problems, apart from latest software compatability and sound, this was while i was waiting for xp pro to be delivered.
and there are also a number of xp problems which windows themselves are at fault for.
all msi have done is create a high performance board which is verry good.but o/s software is letting the hardware down.
it doesn't look like 98 will be put right before it's demise sometime in 2004 but ME should be.so hang in there, i liked ME and some parts of XP, but i still wonder if linux would be so slow to repair/patch and make use of the hardware which i have.
unfortunately, not all things are down to hardware and "it's their fault" is an easy excuse for the reason that something doesnt work.
hang in there bro, you still have a superior brand name under your belt, and they give more help than a few others which i have had dealings with..

  • 64 bit software on x86 hardware

I have a Windows XP machine that is 32 bit (x86) hardware.  The machine was sent to a company that was supposed to upgrade to Windows 7.  This is an x86 system.
The company upgraded using Windows 7 64-bit software.  The system now seems to have some issues with program functionality (i.e. Word randomly closing when I try to click on a open document).  And is very, very slow.
The company said that if the computer allowed them to load 64-bit software, than the computer was 64-bit compatible and it was the correct software to load.
Can anyone provide me with some insight/opinion into this?
    Regards,

If the processor didn't support the x86_64 architecture (quite possible for older Windows PCs), Windows 7 64-bit would fail to install or run. So that it's installed means you do have a processor supporting 64-bit software.
However, do you know how much RAM your PC has? Microsoft recommend at least 2 GB for the 64 bit edition of Windows 7, vs 1 GB for the 32-bit edition. Windows will allow installations with less and the result is usually poor performance. So if your PC has
less than 2GB of RAM, complain that the company you dealt with should not have installed the 64-bit edition of Windows 7. (If it has more than 3GB, on the other hand, 64-bit is definitely the right option.)
    Other things you can try:
Switch to the Windows 7 Basic or even the Windows Classic theme. (Right-click the Desktop and click Personalize.) This reduces RAM usage and can help performance on lower-spec systems.
Open the Device Manager (right-click Computer and choose Manage) and check there aren't any warnings in the devices. In particular if you don't have proper graphics drivers installed you can get a sluggish experience.

  • Photoshop CS5 requires "Force Quit"

    Photoshop CS5 requires “Force Quit”
I leave Photoshop CS5 open with no active files loaded and return to find it unresponsive and requiring me “Force Quit”. Amount of time it takes for this to happen varies.
I’ve tried reducing RAM, increasing RAM, discontinuing Suitcase (someone mentioned font auto-activation plugin as a possible culprit).
I was going to reinstall Photoshop to see if that would help but am not sure about the best way to do so or whether there may be other issues. Also thought about updating to CS 5.5, but with CS6 around the corner, I’d rather wait. Besides, it may not be an application issue.

You mentioned trying a number of things...  DId you Quit Photoshop and launch it afresh after making each change so that you were testing with a fully reinitialized copy?  I mention that because not doing so can really muddy the water when trying to troubleshoot, and might cause you to miss things that actually help.  It is sometimes a good idea to log out and back in again for each test.

  • What happened to Safari?

Older iMac with 2GB memory. Really bogs down on some sites using Safari. Looked at memory use and vitrually gone. Changed to Firefox and no problem. Can't see buying more memory for Safari. Is Safari no longer viable?

I must admit mine is only about 200 MB real and 1 GB virtual - I never use tabs.
I suspect it is excessive tab use combined with the enforced regular reloading of all Safari 5.1 tabs in the background. This will slow everything as memory is continually moved to and from disk. Reducing tabs or eliminating them will probably dramatically reduce RAM use.
